Presentations
1. Busan Museum of Art.
2. In the years between 1930 and 1960, many artists in Southeast Asia created paintings reminiscent of Paul Gauguin’s art, which had become the paradigm for pioneer artists in this area. They adopted not only Gauguin’s style but also his ways of perceiving the world, discovering their own “uncivilizedness” along the way. Set in the historical context of nation-state building in the area, the images of “other” depicted by these pioneer artists were actually the images of the artists themselves as well. Examples of East Asia under Japanese rule were also referred in this paper for comparison..
