Outline Activities
Our studies focus on the understanding and resolving key performance issues of super-conducting forefront materials and superconducting systems based on the advanced instrumentation and measurement technologies. Perspectives of these studies are to lead breakthrough to the energy-efficiency solutions to electric power grid reliability, power quality and the environment challenges. High-temperature superconducting (HTS) composite can carry high current more than 100 times larger than that in conventional copper conductors with almost no dissipation. Our main interest is now on the current limiting mechanism in the HTS conductors. Developing novel characterization techniques, we have been approaching the challenge. For example, we have succeeded to visualize local dissipation in HTS conductors under high magnetic fields with a spatial resolution of micro-meter length scale by the low temperature laser scanning microscopy. We can also observe quantized vortices in mesoscopic scale by using the scanning SQUID microscopy. Our interest is to clarify the vortex dynamics and local current flow, which determines the performance of superconducting materials. Our next concern is to develop engineering approach to design HTS based devices. We have already derived a theoretical model for the nonlinear current transport in the HTS conductors which allows us to predict the current carrying properties at complicated operation conditions.

Professor Takanobu Kiss received his doctorate in 1991 from Kyushu University (KU), Japan. That April, he became a faculty member at KU as a research associate. In 1996, he became an associate professor at KU, and he promoted to a full professor in 2007. While being a faculty member at KU, he was a visiting scholar to the Applied Superconductivity Center, University of Wisconsin-Madison, U.S.A. in 1999, and a visiting scientist at Low Temperature Division, University of Twente, the Netherlands in 2000 both awarded by the MEXT Fellowship. He is recipient of JSPS Young Scientist Fellowship (1989) and the 10th Superconductor Science and Technology Award of the Society of Non-Traditional Technology (2006). He was also awarded research funds including JSPS “KAKENHI”, International Research Promotion by METI, “Strategic-innovation” by JST, “Advanced Low Carbon Technology Research and Development Program” by JST, "Strategic Japanese-EU Coordinated Research Program" by JST and “RE-123 coated conductor wire development” by NEDO-METI.

He is expert in the area of critical current and vortex pinning of superconducting materials. His group has developed novel methods for spatially resolved measurements of electromagnetic properties of superconductors that include in-field low temperature laser scanning microscopy, scanning SQUID microscopy and advanced scanning Hall probe microscopy. These studies focus on the understanding and resolving key performance issues of superconducting forefront materials and superconducting power devices. Perspectives of these studies are to lead breakthrough to the energy-efficiency solutions to electric power grid, alternative energy, transportation and advanced medical systems. He has published 200+ research papers and several book chapters. He has also received over 50 invited talks on many continents - in the US, in Europe, and in Asia.

He has been the chairman of Superconducting Wire Development Committee at Japanese National Project “Materials & Power Applications of Coated Conductors” by NEDO-METI, and a member of Advisory Board of the IOP journal of Superconductor Science and Technology, International Editorial Board of the European Superconductivity News Forum and ICEC Board. He has also served plenty of international conferences including CCA2010 Chairman, ICEC24-ICMC2012 Conference Secretariat, ASC Technical Committee Member 2004-2014, ISS Chief Program Committee Member 2011-2013.

  • Development of advanced superconducting wires for power device applications

Current and Past Project
  • To investigate high field performance of PLD based GdBCO conductors and make R&D attack on getting magnetic field well above 35 T, we will carry out high field coil test by use of well-characterized highly uniform coated conductor under the background field of 31 T.
  • In 2008 the group of Prof. Hosono discovered the superconductivity in a new compound containing FeAs planes, thus opening the age of Fe-based superconductors (FeSC). Several different phases were rapidly discovered and today the FeSCs show the second high Tc behind the HTSC and very high critical fields. These characteristics suggested that FeSCs can be candidates for power application.
    However, as the recent story of HTSC taught us, the discovery of new superconductors always rises euphoric perspectives concerning their applications, but there are many issues to overcome before actual devices are fabricated.
    Therefore, within SUPER-IRON we depict the roadmap for exploring and exploiting the potentialities of FeSCs:
    1) understanding the fundamental mechanisms and their implication on superconducting properties,
    2) control material quality
    3) manipulate superconducting properties,
    4) assess the potential of FeSCs with respect to other technical superconductors,
    5) identify application fields, where FeSCs lead to a step-like change with respect to the current state of the art.
    To cover this road SUPER-IRON has joined the efforts of the leader groups involved in the investigation of FeSCs throughout EU and Japan.
    FeSCs belonging to the different phases and also to new pnictide oxide SC, in form of single crystals, polycrystals, thin films, tapes and wires will be realized by using different synthesis methods. Superconducting properties will be investigated also under high magnetic field and/or pressure and visualization of local electric field and current will be carried out with a number of sophisticated techniques. This wide variety of experimental activities will be supported by an intense theoretical work including ab-initio calculations and theoretical modelling.
    The achievement of the planned objectives through synergic and coordinated activities and the sharing of knowledge and tools will set the basis for future collaborations between Japan and EU.
  • Study on Mechanisms of Superconductivity Change by Neutron Irradiation

    In the nuclear fusion reactor, superconducting magnet will be irradiated by fast neutron. Purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of such fast neutron irradiation on superconducting properties and explore its mechanism from the direct observation of fluxoids in mesoscopic scale. By using Fusion Neutronics Source at Japan Atomic Energy Agency, we irradiate Nb thin plate samples with fast neutron with 14 MeV. To transfer the sample to Kyushu University (KU) for the measurements, we registered nuclide Nbm92 to radiation controlled area at KU. After we received authorization for the radioisotope, we succeeded in measuring rapped fluxoids in the Nb thin plate was measured by the scanning SQUID microscope.
  • Current limiting mechanism in SmBCO coated conductors obtained by the co-evapolation methods has been investigated by the low temperature laser scanning microscopy developed in Kyushu University. A research student from Ewha woman's University has been invited to the laboraty of Prof. Kiss, Kyushu University, as a part of her PhD study.
