Outline Activities

Based on the motto, “having high ecological validity and being useful for the educational scenes and actual daily life”, studies that relate to the following 4 research topics are conducted.

(1) Theoretical and empirical studies about promoting skills and attitudes in creative discussion:
Which knowledge, skills and attitudes are required to have one’s idea and appropriately express it in discussions are theoretically examined. In addition, Japanese implicit value systems regarding the discussions are investigated. We also theoretically and empirically search for educational settings and systems which promote such skills and attitudes.

(2) Studies about constructive mechanism of meta-cognitions and monitoring:
So as to flexibly manage problems with proper judgments, when facing problem-solving situations and interacting with others, an individual needs to function one’s creative thinking which is socially dependent. Additionally, one needs to correctly monitor situations and conditions about “acting self” as well as “thinking self”, along with reviewing self to uncover where and what the causes are.
The projects here are those about functions of the meta-cognitions of cognitive works about self and the constructive mechanism of the meta-cognitions and monitoring.

(3) Acquisition of knowledge through social reciprocal negotiation:
From the perspective of social constructionism of knowledge, the processes and mechanisms of how knowledge is modified and newly obtained through collaboration with others are examined. Theoretical and empirical studies are conducted mainly by analyzing the processes of mutual interactions among children.

(4) Studies about “theory of mind”
When do children start to be able to understand motions of mind? As well, when do they start to be able to have the appropriate “play catch of mind”based on the similarities and differences of the motions between their own mind and others? The studies here seek answers for these questions.

Professional and Outreach Activities

In the following “Society of Education and Medicine”, I have made contributions to improve regional educations, welfares, medicines, and nursing while taking roles as a director, editorial staff, and head official of the Society since 1980.
“Society of Education and Medicine”: With faculties in Education and Medicine at the Kyushu University as central figures, this Society is made of volunteers whose goal is “to contribute to improve regional educations, welfares, medicines and nursing”. The main work of the Society is to edit books and monthly journals (“Education and Medicine”), as well as organize public conferences and lectures. The editing of “Education and Medicine” is mainly accomplished by faculties of Human-Environmental Studies (former Education), Medicine at the Kyusyu University, and other universities, such as Saga Dentist University, Fukuoka University, and Nakamura Gakuen University. The publication is undertaken by Keio University Press.
