Utilizing Adsorbed CO2 for Fast Algae Cultivation and Biofuel Extraction
Bidyut Baran Saha, Kyushu University, Mitsui Chemicals Inc.
In this proposed project, we will work on two major schemes, i.e., CO2 capture from the industrial exhaust, and fast fatty algae cultivation for efficient biofuel extraction. For the former objective, we will work on the synthesis and characterization of functional activated carbons targeting selective CO2 adsorption. Among many methods, we have opted for the adsorption-based system as this system can be driven by low-grade waste heat (typically below 100°C), which is abundantly available in the industry. For the second one, our goal is to screen fatty micro-algae suitable for room temperature cultivation. A closed bioreactor with an integrated CO2 gas dissolution system will be constructed. After optimized algae cultivation, biofuel will be extracted from the cultured algae by introducing supercritical (exposing the algae to high pressure) CO2 or other established methods..

Solar-Powered Adsorption Desalination (AD): A Pilot Test Program to Achieve 1.5 kWh/m3
Kim Choon Ng, National University of Singapore, National University of Singapore, Singapore

5. S. Ghosh, S. Harish, B.B. Saha, Energy Harvesting With Thermoelectric Cement Composites, LAMBERT Academic Publishing, 2021.06, This book is intended to present the current state of understanding in the field of energy harvesting using thermoelectric materials. The book is targeted to students and academics interested in energy harvesting, material sciences and engineering studies. To aid the comprehension of the non-specialist, examples of fundamental physical characteristics such as thermoelectricity and thermoelectric properties are included. This book is divided into several chapters. Chapter 1 concerns the discoveries, fundamentals and various materials involved with energy harvesting via the thermoelectric effect. Chapter 2 presents the thermoelectric properties of cement composites with graphene nanoplatelets (GnP) inclusions. Chapter 3 continues the fabrication of graphene based cement composites with the addition of metallic oxides (Fe2O3, ZnO and MnO2). A possible arrangement of p- and n-type thermoelements to achieve the theoretical maximum values by the cement composites based thermoelectric generator (TEG) and their related analytical expressions are presented in Chapter 4. Finally, Chapter 5 points out the major contributions to the thermoelectric cement composites research..

Silica gel-water adsorption cooling system has been taken into consideration for the present study and lumped parameter model is used to investigate the performance of the system. Based on the solar radiation data it is found that at least 15 collectors (each of 2.415 m2) is required to achieve the required heat source temperature (around 85 °C) to run the cooling unit. It is also observed that the solar-powered adsorption cooling unit provides a cooling capacity of around 10 kW at noon with base run conditions, while the system provides solar COP around 0.3, however, the solar collector size can be reduced by optimizing the cycle time. .
