Outline Activities
1.Research on the Craft-Guilds in Late Medieval and Early Modern Europe. It consists of two research projects, pursueing the research trend and empirical study basing on the Rhineland.
The former is characterised by substitution of classic and static theory, which is basing on the economic and social interests of small producer classified as master-craftmen, for the dynamic one, which pays much attension to the active resoponse of master-craftmen to the competition from
outside. Conserning the latter work, we try to present a new and dynamic craft-picture by constructing a regional typology, which is characterised by the trinity of economic-system,social group and institional changes.
2.Research on the Market and Economic System in Late Medieval and Early Modern Europe. It consists of two research projects. The first is pursuing the research trend, the focus of which is the central place theory that has been accepted by urban historian as a approach method since 1970.We
identify the importance of conecting the functional viewpoint with the structual one. We adapt this approach on the empirical research in Cologne region and find out a economic system, the top of which is the biggest town Cologne following by many medium and small scale towns and villages. We do not forget, this economic system is supported by many kinds of economic instituitons such as staple and putting out, so on.
3.Research on the World-System. This work is socalled a subproduct of research on the central place theory. By pursuing the world-wide discussion about the pre-capitalistic world-systems,we can conferm the new trend, which tries to enlarge the modern world-system(I.Wallerstein) by useing some concepts.
4.Research on the Environmental History in Modern Germany. A new discipline "environmental history"
appears in 1970's and nowaday becomes a main stream of historical researches. We pay much attention on this subject, because it tries to reconstruct a new type of picture about an industrial-society. It rejects to accept a leading concept "economic growth or technological progress ", on which an economic and social history has been dependent for a long time, and try to draw a historical lesson
from the manner of environmental governance of 19th century Germany.
