Outline Activities
1 Research in regards to the organization of infrastructure in
Korea during the colonial period (research conducted from 1983-1991):

Until now, research regarding the Japanese colonial rule over the Korean
Peninsula has in large part denied any positive influence on
post-colonial Korean infrastructure by Japanese colonists. Yet recently,
in connection to the developing of the Korean economy, views differing
from those conventional ones have begun to emerge. On the basis of those
views and by using the institutional methodology, colonial policies have
been reconsidered. Thus, not on the mere material foundations of ports,
or roads, but rather, using the estate system as a focus, the impact of
the colonial infrastructure on the present day is addressed.

2 Research in regards to the problem of Korean farmland (1986 to
the present):

The influence of the landlord-peasant system extends from the long-term
stagnation of agricultural productivity to the foundations of
agricultural economic development. In severing with the colonial period,
throughout the subsequent economic development, absentee landlordism
increased creating an obstacle to agricultural development in modern
Korea. On the basis of these problems, changes and policies relating to
the agricultural structure have been analyzed, and those results were
published in "Korean Agriculture Under Market Liberalization" (2002).
Furthermore, the results were lectured upon during the Japan-Korea
Agricultural Economy Academic Institutes International Symposium

3 Research in regards to the Korean Greenbelt. (1992-1996)

In this study, the Korean Greenbelt is viewed from the model of the City
Planning System of the colonial period. This system was reborn in
1970s, under the stricter Environmental Preservation System. From the
beginning, both systems contributed to environmental regulations, but
became a great burden on the economic development and progress of
urbanization, as well as on the entailed increasing demands for
development of the urban private sector. Moreover, agricultural
landowners within the Greenbelt suffered a significant impact on their
agricultural property, leading to calls for the relaxation of the
regulations. This research considers both those who survived regulation,
as well as those who, in the name of economic development, called for
the repeal of such regulations.

4 Research in regards to the change in the Korean economy (1997
to the present)

Taking into account that Korean economic development continues to affect
Korean society, this research examines the industrial reorganization
subsequent to the recent economic crisis. Not just from the agricultural
field, but also from those of general industry as well as administration
and management, this research is both comprehensive and institutional in
its approach. Every month, there is a conference on Korean economic
studies held. Moreover, an editorial board composed of specialists
created a periodical entitled Korean Economic Research. This magazine is
distributed to 500 university departments, both domestically and
internationally. The research was presented at the Korean Research
Centers International Symposium, entitled "Japanese-Korean Industrial
Economic Bloc and the Kyushu Economy" in 2001, and was also presented as
"The Future of the Japanese-Korean Free Trade Agreement" in 2002.
