Outline Activities

My research area is optimization. Especially, I've been making a research into second-order optimality conditions. The envelope-like effect that I discovered in 1988 is now standard in this area. That is, second-order optimality conditions had been described in terms of the first and second derivatives of the Lagrange function. I pointed out that we need an extra term besides the Lagrange function to give second-order optimality conditions for optimization problems if there is an infinite number of inequality constraints. As applications, I have been studying variational problems with equality and inequality state constraints, a minimization problem of a sup-type function, and Tchebycheff approximation problems. I was awarded the best paper prize of the Operations Research Society of Japan in 1992.

My latest research is on conjugate points in optimization. I proposed a conjugate point theory in optimization in 2000. Furthermore, a game-theoretic aspect of conjugate points was clarified.
