24. 野口 博司, Bone-like Extraordinary Crack Resistance in Metastable Multi-phase Nanolaminates, Science, 355(6329),  , 1055-1057 , 2017.05, Fatigue failures create enormous risks for all engineered structures as well as human lives, motivating large safety-factors in design, and thus, inefficient use of resources. Inspired from the excellent fracture toughness of bone (despite its intrinsic difference to fatigue resistance), we explore the fatigue resistance in metastability-assisted multi-phase steels. We show that when steel microstructures are hierarchical and laminated similar to the sub-structure of bone, excellent crack resistance can be realized. Our results further reveal that tuning the interface structure, distribution and phase stability to simultaneously activate multiple crack propagation resistance micro-mechanisms is the key in the observed property leap. The extraordinary properties that resulted from this strategy provide a guide for all fatigue-resistant alloy design efforts..
