Power generation from the supercritical geothermal resources in Japan can contribute significantly to both energy security and reduction of emissions of CO 2 . The temperature range of the target supercritical rock body is about 400-500 o C and its depth is expected to be less than several kilometers. The depths of the supercritical rock bodies in Japan are much shallower those in other areas in the world, which brings advantages in terms of accessibility, economy, and safety. However, there are a lot of scientific unknowns about their nature, especially regarding rock-mechanical and geochemical behavior under supercritical conditions. Technological breakthroughs will be necessary, because the temperature and pressure conditions in the supercritical geothermal systems are far beyond the current technological limitations and also because experiences in previous ultra-high temperature geothermal drilling suggest that the presence of acidic geothermal fluid is likely. The Japanese government has recognized that supercritical geothermal power generation is one of the key technologies in its strategy to drastically reduce CO 2 emissions in and after 2050 (NESTI2050). In FY2017, funded by NEDO (New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization), a team of Japanese researchers from 14 organizations have started a national project to improve understanding of the nature of supercritical rock bodies and the engineering necessary to extract geothermal energy. This project is a feasibility study combining science, engineering, economics, and environmental issues..

To infer the thermal activity, main objectives were to monitor the radiative heat flux (RHF) before and after eruption of Kuju fumaroles in 1995 using 4 sets of Landsat TM thermal infrared data from 1990 to 1996; and to calculate and monitor the heat discharge rate (HDR) after multiplying RHF using a relationship coefficient between RHF and HDR, derived from two previous studies. The RHF was estimated by using the Stefan–Boltzmann equation for heat flow where we applied satellite image-derived spectral emissivity and land surface temperature. An increasing trend of total radiant heat flux was obtained of about 22–39 MW before the Kuju fumaroles eruption from 1990 to 1994 and a declining trend total RHF of about 37–11 MW after eruption from 1995 to 1996. RHF was strongly correlated with land surface temperature (LST) above ambient in our study. Spatial distribution of RHF also showed a similar trend of total RHF. After using this relationship coefficient, we obtained the HDR from our study area about 144.64, 249.74, 239.67 and 68.54 MW in 1990, 1994, 1995 and 1996, respectively. The HDR was much higher before eruption in October 11, 1995 than that of after the eruption in our study. Fumaroles area also showed an abrupt increase of bared land and no vegetation just after eruption within the thematic map in 1995. Statistics of LST and RHF also showed evidences of heat loss activity before and after eruption in 1995. In conclusion, we infer from this study that Landsat TM thermal infrared images are fully competent to monitor thermal activity from any active volcano fumaroles for future eruption..

In this survey, four geophysically different methods; the electromagnetics, the magnetics, the infrared images and the gamma-ray spectrometry, were applied in almost same survey lines by using a same helicopter. Electric resistivity structure down to 800m, vertical magnetic gradient map, temperature distribution on the ground surface and total gamma-ray intensity map were estimated and produced by the survey. These results were confirmed by comparing with the geology and the ground survey results in the survey area..

In this system, we designed that the system could not only investigate underground structure but also survey water and temperature distribution for contributing disaster prediction. For these purposes, we will apply four geophysically different methods; the electromagnetics, the magnetics, the infrared images and the gamma-ray spectrometry in one survey and repeat this survey to monitor the underground structure and water and temperature distribution changes. In FY2003, a new electromagnetic survey system was designed and manufactured to investigate the underground structure to a depth of more than 300 m up to 1,000 m. Data acquisition and processing methods for the magnetics, the infrared images and the gamma-ray spectrometry were developed..

There are numerous case studies to investigate active faults using geophysical exploration methods; however, only a few cases have been verified in detail by comparison with other geological information. We have applied electric and electromagnetic methods, which can be effective for exploring to several hundred meters depth, to reveal geological structures covered by thick Quaternary formations at four active fault sites in Japan. In this paper, we used the controlled source audio-frequency magnetotelluric (CSAMT) method, the direct current (dc) resistivity method, and the resistivity tomography method. The resistivity profiles were analyzed by two-dimensional inversion techniques, and the resulting models were verified by comparison with geological evidence obtained by drilling or trenching. Our results are as follows. (1) CSAMT is an effective method for defining an outline of geological structures around a fault to several hundred meters deep. It enables us to define a resistivity boundary between different kinds of bedrock with a fault contact. (2) The dc resistivity method distinguishes each sedimentary unit as a different resistivity zone and detects the vertical displacement in the Quaternary formations. (3) The resistivity tomography method is useful to determine in more detail the flexure structure produced by faulting. Using these latter two methods, we can select drilling positions and trenching locations. In addition, it is verified from the data measured along trench walls and electrical logging that the resistivity of softsedimentary layers and clayey cataclastic bedrock conforms to the relationship established between the resistivity and the clay content. These resistivity methods have the advantages of detecting clayey layers as very low resistivity zones. The overall conclusion is that the combination of these resistivity methods provides us with more detailed and accurate information for estimating fault activity..

Gravity changes at 26 stations have been monitored since May 1991 to study reservoir behavior. The observed gravity changes included gravity changes due to shallow ground water level change. We removed the effect of shallow ground water level change on gravity by applying a statistical technique to isolate the gravity change due to the mass change associated with the commencement of the production and reinjection of geothermal fluids at the Takigami geothermal power station in November 1996. Multivariate regression analysis was applied in order to establish the relationship between gravity and precipitation; a good correlation was obtained. Therefore, it is now possible to estimate the gravity change due to ground water level change at each observation point by using the precipitation data collected prior to the gravity measurement. We thereby define the residual gravity, which is the observed gravity minus this estimated gravity. The results of repeat gravity measurement show that repeat gravity surveys is an effective method to monitor the underground hydrological systems..

Alamta Singarimbun, Sachio Ehara, Yasuhiro Fujimitsu, A numerical model of magmatic hydrothermal system and its application to Kuju volcano, central Kyushu, Japan, Memoirs of the Kyushu University, Faculty of Engineering, 56, 4, 229-243, 1996.12, The objective of this study is to develop a new numerical simulator for the investigation of thermal processes in the high temperature reservoir, which is part of the magmatic hydrothermal system. In this study the finite difference method (FDM) based on the mass and heat balance equations is used to obtain the pressure and the enthalpy distribution in the reservoir. The derived pressure and enthalpy are used to calculate the other parameters (thermodynamic properties of fluid). These parameters represent the thermal state of the fluid in the reservoir (liquid phase, two phase and superheated steam conditions). The development of the magmatic hydrothermal system is calculated by using the transient flow rate of magmatic water discharged from a magma chamber as a boundary condition at the bottom of the reservoir. This concept is applied to simulate the thermal processes beneath Kuju volcano, central Kyushu, Japan. In the numerical simulation, the initial condition of the reservoir is a liquid phase. Accompanying the development of the reservoir supplied by magmatic water, the fluid phase in the reservoir changes with time from liquid to two phase and superheated state. These processes interpret the development of magmatic hydrothermal system beneath Kuju volcano..
