1. RATIONALIZED CONSTRUCTION WORK CONTROL STANDARD FOR ASPHALT FACING IN CONSIDERATION OF ALL-YEAR-ROUND CONSTRUCTION
In Japan, technical standard for asphalt facing work has not been established yet. Therefore, precedent construction work control standards for asphalt facing were mainly based on empirical knowledge.
In this paper, a unique construction work control standard for asphalt facing work was illustrated by clarifying the reasons obtained through laboratory tests and field trials. In order to achieve all-year-round construction and rationalized standardization, some new trials were executed including standardization on temperature of asphalt mixture mainly focused on the last compaction work, variable standardization on asphalt content according to meteorological condition and construction area, etc..

Pellet, A Shear Model Accounting Scale Effect in Rock Joints Behavior, ROCK MECHANICS AND ROCK ENGINEERING, 10.1007/s00603-009-0074-9, 43, 5, 581-595, 2010.09, Understanding the scale effect on the mechanical behavior of a single rock joint is still very important in rock engineering. Rock joints can be classified into three different categories depending on their scale: the "micro scale" which is the scale of the asperities; the "meso scale" is the scale of the specimens tested in laboratory; and the "macro scale" which is the scale of the rock mass. The purpose of this paper is to propose an effective way to model rock joints at both the meso and macro scale. An original constitutive mechanical model, in which parameters are deduced from experimental results, has been developed. This model is then extended to simulate the discontinuities occurring at a larger size. At the macro scale, the constitutive modeling was carried out for both small and large relative displacements. Large displacements lead to substantial changes in dilation. For both cases, the peak shear stress vanishes for joints longer than 2 m..

Ibrahim Djamaluddin, Yasuhiro Mitani, Tetsuro Esaki, Evaluation of ground movement and damage to structures from Chinese coal mining using a new GIS coupling model, INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF ROCK MECHANICS AND MINING SCIENCES, 10.1016/j.ijrmms.2011.01.004, 48, 3, 380-393, 2011.04, In this paper, combining a theoretical method of predicting subsidence over time and using a geographical information system (GIS), a GIS-based dynamic model is proposed to rapid simulate the phenomenon of progressive movement distribution from large sequential mining. The theoretical method uses stochastic medium concept involving Knothe time function for basic governing equations to calculate progressive movement because this solutions have been widely developed and used in Chinese mining practice to solve the coal extraction problem under building, railways, and rivers. In order to assess the impact of progressive movement to the surface structures, a fuzzy model is suggested to identify damage classifications with contributions of subsidence calculations and building mesh data. For implementation of the GIS-based prediction and assessment model, a new GIS coupling model is established by implementing tight coupling strategy using the component object model (COM) program to overcome the problems of complex model integration for dynamic prediction and assessment. Furthermore, this paper demonstrates the effectiveness of this GIS-based model for prediction and evaluation of subsidence-induced damage from coal mining beneath surface structures in China. 4. Bo Li, Yujing Jiang, Tateru Mizokami, Kouji Ikusada, Yasuhiro Mitani, Anisotropic shear behavior of closely jointed rock masses, INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF ROCK MECHANICS AND MINING SCIENCES, 10.1016/j.ijrmms.2014.07.013, 71, 258-271, 2014.10, In-situ shear tests on a closely jointed rock mass containing two sets of joints, one continuous and another staggered, were conducted. A series of laboratory shear tests with varying combinations of loading conditions and geometrical characteristics of rock joints were also carried out A Discrete Element Method (DEM) was used to numerically simulate the in-situ and laboratory shear tests. The in-situ tests, laboratory tests and numerical modeling were aimed at evaluating the anisotropic shear behavior of closely jointed rock masses. Comparison between the test and simulation results of this study with the results of similar laboratory tests was completed. The simulation results agreed well with the laboratory test results and provided slightly higher shear stresses comparing to the results of in-situ shear tests. The test and simulation results showed that the jointed rock masses exhibited a strong anisotropic shear behavior, the significance of which depended on the orientation of the continuous joint set. Different failure mechanisms were confirmed in the tested and simulated rock mass models with different geometrical characteristics of rock joints, which resulted in the anisotropic shear behavior. 59. Spatial Distribution of Human Impacts on Terrain Based on Land-use Change Analysis : Development and GIS Analysis of Land-use Maps since 1900 in the Fukuoka Prefecture Area
This paper has focused on Land-use change to clarify spatial distribution of human impacts on terrain as a viewpoint of vulnerability mapping to natural disasters. First, the technique of making 100m-mesh land-use maps, which divides into farm lands, forest, urban, river, sea shore and sea, has been developed using the old editions' 1/50,000 topological maps of Geospatial Information Authority of Japan. Then, the land-use change from 1900 to 1997 in the Fukuoka Prefecture area has been analyzed using the geographical information systems (GIS) in comparison with distribution of regional geology and terrain.
The results are as follows. (1) The relationship between land use and terrain changed significantly after 1950 in comparison with land use of 1900 that harmonized with local relief. (2) The lands of plutonic rocks had already been developed widely before 1900, and its use shifted to urban use from farm land after 1950. (3) The characteristics of elevation and slope angle in urban and farm lands indicate that the urban lands which adjoin mountainous area increased by about ten times from 1900 to 1997. (4) The difference of 4 to 8 degrees in slope angle has been estimated on plutonic rocks' terrain that changed from forest as human impacts, based on the relationship between land use and its geology.
These results imply that the proposed method would enable mapping of anthropogenic terrain..

82. Sustainable Data-sharing for Disasters Based on the Wiki and GIS Technologies

Intelligence sharing using the GIS technology provides an indispensable capability to assist in the pre-event preparation and post-event conduct of emergency operations. Experiences and discussions on the recent earthquake disasters of Niigata and Fukuoka in Japan have let us propose a data-sharing system to support development of a universal and sustainable data model for disaster response. The proposed system, which consists of Data-Storage, GIS Node and GIS Portal servers with Wiki and GIS technologies, transforms from autonomous distributed systems to a virtual integrated system according to the emergency response cycle. In a case study of Kyushu University, the developed system has made it possible to develop the data model to support not only the facility management but also the disaster response.

A new method for evaluating the aperture distribution, based on measurement of joint surfaces and three dimensional characteristics of each surface, is developed. This method allows one to determine and visualize the aperture distribution under different normal stresses and shear displacements, which is difficult to observe experimentally. A new laser scanner system is designed and developed for joint surface measurements. Special attention is paid to both surfaces' data gained by measurements and processing, such as x-y coordinate table modification, data referencing, and matching between upper and lower surfaces. The surfaces of an artificial joint in granite are measured, processed, analyzed and three dimensional approaches are carried out for surface characterization. Parameters such as "asperity's heights", "slope angles", and "aspects" distribution at micro scale, local concentration of elements and their spatial localization at local scale are determined by Geographic Information System (GIS). These parameters are used for joint surfaces matching and its real behavior quantitative analysis. The upper surface is brought down to make contact with the lower surface and the distance between the two surfaces is evaluated from the joint mean experimental aperture, which is obtained from normal and shear tests. Changes of aperture distribution at different normal stresses and various shear displacements are visualized and interpreted. Increasing normal load causes negative changes in aperture frequency distribution which indicates high joint matching. However, increasing shear displacement causes a rapid increase in the aperture and positive changes in the aperture frequency distribution, which could be due to un-matching, surface anisotropy and spatial localization of contact points with proceeding shear..

This paper describes a promising approach that combines an improved three-dimensional slope stability model with an approximate method based on the Green and Ampt model, to estimate the time-space distribution of shallow landslide hazards. Once a forecast of rainfall intensity and slope stability-related data, e.g., terrain and geology data, are acquired, this approach is shown to have the ability to estimate the variation of slope stability of a wide natural area during rainfall and to identify the location of potential failure surfaces. The effectiveness of the estimation procedures described has been tested by comparison with a one-dimensional method and by application to a landslide-prone area in Japan..

139. Experimental and numerical simulation of shear tests for rock masses with steeply dipped discontinuities.
Scale model tests and the DEM analysis are carried out to grasp a shear behavior of discontinuous rock masses with rock block of two prominent sets of discontinuities, which are oriented perpendicular to each other.
The results of the model test and the analysis indicate that there is the anisotropy of shear properties between counter-dip arrangement and dip arrangement In the case of counter-dip arrangement, the failure mechanism is dominated by shear failure of intact rock, however, in the case of dip arrangement, it is dominated by tensile failure of intact rock due to toppling failure, which is caused by opening of discontinuities..

160. Laboratory Studies on Gas Permeability and Hydraulic Anisotropy of Rocks
Accurate determination of the permeability of hydraulically-tight rock at great depth is very important for the design and/or assessment of facilities associated with many kinds of underground utilization or exploitation. One of the promising ways to test a rock specimen having such low permeability is to use gas such as air as the permeant. Because the viscosity of air is much lower than that of water, air permeates through a hydraulically-tight specimen of rock more readily than water. In this study, we developed a new laboratory permeability test system. This system is capable of testing low permeability rocks either by the constant pressure air permeation test or by the constant-flow air permeation test under high confining pressure conditions that simulate ground pressures at depths. The system was used to test Shirahama sandstone and Inada granite, which are two types of rock widely available in Japan. In order to investigate the effects of anisotropy on rock permeability, specimens cored parallel to and perpendicular to bedding for sandstone, and specimens cored in the direction perpendicular to Rift Plane, Grain Plane and Hardway Plane for granite, were used. In addition, a series of test conditions were set so that the effects of test method, permeation or entrance pressure, specimen size and confining pressure on gas permeability of rocks can be assessed. Preliminary results of present study show that : (1)air permeation tests, especially the constant-pressure air permeation test can be effectively used to measure the permeability of a hydraulically-tight specimen of rock as low as that of granite ; (2)the permeability of a rock specimen is a function of the confining pressure, it decreases monotonously with increase in confining pressure. Under the tested conditions with increment of confining pressure from 1MPa to 69MPa, the gas permeabilities of Shirahama sandstone and Inada granite ranged from 9.4×10^ to 7.4×10^ and 5.2×10^ to 8.0×10^(m^2), respectively ; (3)Inada granite in particular appears to exhibit hydraulic anisotropy. The permeability in the direction perpendicular to Rift Plane aloug which major microcracks exist demonstrates the lowest value. In other words, the permeability in the direction along the plane of microcracks is higher than that in the direction perpendicular to the plane of microcracks..
