Field of Specialization

Silviculture, Forest tree breeding, Forest Genetics

Outline Activities

Forest formed the most complex bio-society and is called as the treasure house of genes. The recent human impact to forest area has decreased the bio-diversity (gene-diversity and species-diversity), and genetic erosion in forests is felting on a massive scale. Since enormous genetic variability of forest tree is essential for breeding the superior cultivars, the bio-diversity must be conserved systematically. Managing the genetic variation and its effectively utilizing will carry the harmonization between the global environment and woody plant resources.

Theme of Main Research
1. DNA Taxonomic and Phylogenic Studies of Forest Woody Plants: Coniferous species is the most useful forest resources. We have researched the phylogeny of the species based on the sequence information.
2. Genome analysis of the useful tree species -Gene mapping using DNA molecular markers-: We are constructing the high density linkage map of the four Japanese coniferous forest tree (Cryptomeria japonica, Chamaecyparis obtuse, Larix kaempfer, and Pinus thunbergii)
3. Estimating the Gene-diversity and Genetic structure of natural forest: To develop the most efficient conservation, we estimate the gene-diversiy and genetic structure of relic population of natural forest, especially Zao-larch and Shikoku fir.
4. Diagnosis of wood using the DNA information: The construct the reliable method to identify the species of wood based the DNA data obtained the remaining DNA in wood, and the database of all Japanese coniferous species.
