115. Isobe Atsuhiko, Hirose Naoki, A proposal for advancing coastal ocean sciences by using a novel observation network around Japan Islands, Japan-Australia Marine Science Workshop – Understanding Global Change Impacts and Opportunities in Tropical and Subtropical Marine Ecosystems –, 2013.07, The Oceanographic Society of Japan has proposed a research project to advance the coastal oceanography by establishing new observational networks in conjunction with a high-resolution (~100 m) ocean reanalysis dataset specialized for coastal-ocean phenomena such as oceanic fronts, frontal eddies, kyucho events, and so forth. The network includes high-frequency ocean radars which surround the entire Japan Islands, and includes launching a new satellite which monitors SSHs with high resolution in time and space. Of particular interest for the oceanographic community is the development of a profiling float (like Argo) available for coastal waters. Compact, durable, and affordable floats will be designed to repeatedly observe vertical profiles of temperature and salinity in shallow waters, and to send the observed data to our offices via a satellite. In the above our dream, dozens of the floats are deployed to coastal waters around Japan Islands, and provide us with spatio-temporal variations of 3D temperature and salinity structures, which will dramatically increase the accuracy of the coastal ocean reanalyses product through the data assimilation..

125. Wang, B.; Hirose, N.; Moon, J.; Yuan, D., The Weak Influence of the Tidal Residual Currents on Lagrangian Trajectories in the Southwestern Yellow Sea, Ocean Sciences Meeting, 2012.02, [URL], The influence of the tidal residual currents on Lagrangian trajectories is investigated by a high-resolution circulation model of the southwestern Yellow Sea in comparison to the wind-driven circulations. The simulated tidal harmonic constants and the patterns of Eulerian tidal residual current in this region agree with the observation and previous studies very well. However, the results of the model show that the influence of tidal residual currents on Lagrangian trajectories is weak at the presence of southerly wind. It means that the Lagrangian trajectories are dominated by wind driven currents in the southwestern Yellow Sea. This result is also confirmed by the northeastward ARGOS surface drifters released in the southwestern Yellow Sea in the summer of 2009 (Li, 2010). Further analysis suggests that the quadratic bottom friction scheme is the crucial factor for the weaker influence of the tidal residual currents on Lagrangian trajectories in the southwestern Yellow Sea. This study demonstrates that Lagrangian trajectory could be different from the linear estimation of Eulerian fields at shallow coastal regions due to nonlinearity of the bottom friction..

Application to the tanker `Nakhodka' 1997 incident, Proceedings of the 1998 1st International Conference on Oil and Hydrocarbon Spills, Modelling, Analysis and Control, OIL SPILL, 1998.07, An operational system for the prediction of oil spills in the Sea of Japan is developed. The modelled climatological sea currents were generated by the three-dimensional primitive ocean circulation model with 10-minute horizontal resolution and 19 vertical levels. The model was forced by climatological atmospheric winds and heat fluxes. The oil spill was modelled with the particle tracking techniques. The model included the advection by currents, random diffusion, buoyancy effect and the parameterization of oil evaporation, biodegradation and beaching. The realization of the model is the real-time simulations and forecasts of the ocean currents with the fine resolution in the upper layer of the Sea of Japan..
