Outline Activities
The research objective of our laboratory is to promote the development of an advanced mineral processing technology with a special focus on low emission application and resources recycling, highly required in the present century, for a sustainable development of modern societies. Currently, we are studying about the development of advanced mineral processing technology, resources recycling, waste treatment and utilization, and also environmental remediation.

STUDY ON SEPARATION OF TENNANTITE FROM ARSENO COPPER ORE USING FLOTATION
The increased demand for copper in the last 20 years has resulted in an intensified exploitation of arseno-copper ore due to the relative scarcity of non-arseno copper ore. Given an increasingly complex legislative milieu regarding the possible danger of arsenic to human life and the environment, it is not surprising that alternative technologies have emerged. One of the most appropriate technologies is flotation offering both sufficient level of separation and stable end product. As for non-arseno copper ore`s flotation, many studies have been conducted. On the other hand, only few studies have dealt with arseno copper ore, so that further exploration of possible techniques and understanding of the mechanism are required.
In this study, chalcopyrite and tennantite were chosen as single mineral sample representing the major minerals in arseno copper ore. The applicability of triethylenetetramine (TETA), sodium thiosulphate (HYPO) and oxygen was examined in order to obtain high selectivity. In term of revealing the mechanism; flotability, dissolution test, contact angle, and zeta potential measurements were performed. In addition, surface sensitive X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) were utilized. Flotation study on arseno copper ore was also conducted using possible techniques generated from the single mineral study.

HYDROTHERMAL UPGRADING AND CONVERSION OF PEAT AND LOW QUALITY COAL
Increasing CO2 emissions via increased industrial production, transportation and populations could enhance the greenhouse effect, leading to catastrophic consequences caused by global warming. Recently, CO2 derived from peatland fires caused by injudicious utilization of tropical peat resources has been identified as a major atmospheric pollutant in Indonesia. Indeed, these emissions have been shown to be equivalent to 13%–40% of the mean annual global carbon emission from fossil fuels in 1997 and contributed greatly to the largest annual increase in atmospheric CO2 detected since record keeping began in 1957. Increasing world demand for alternative and new energy resources has necessitated the upgrading and conversion of raw tropical peat. A better understanding of the unique behavior and properties of tropical peat will facilitate the development of alternative methods of utilizing these resources. Utilization of cold climate peat and low quality coal should also be considered as an important alternative energy source. Accordingly, new approaches to the hydrothermal technology process must be developed to process such raw peat and low quality coal effectively by economically viable methods while remaining environmentally efficient. We have published papers related this issue.

  • Under the project of NEDO "Innovative Zero-emission Coal Gasification Power Generation Project", we devised the process which utilizes CO2 recovered from the coal gasification system as a part of oxidant and greatly inproves the efficiency of the system. We have studied about Upgrading and Dewatering of low rank coal in order to use the IGCC system.
