Disclosure statements from such homes for the elderly in selected urban and suburban cities in Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan—considered a typical prefecture with adjoining urban and suburban areas—were examined. The study compared the determinants of the amounts charged by the homes based on the distinct geographic features of urban and suburban areas. The hedonic price model was combined with a two-stage least squares regression to determine the determinants of lump-sum and monthly payments. We found that the factors that influence monthly payments in urban areas include distance to a park, distance to the coast, meals offered, number of care staff, and initial lump-sum payment. In contrast, factors such as room size, distance to a bus stop, distance to a park, and the number of night staff influence monthly payments in suburban areas. We conclude that the surrounding landscape has a greater influence on monthly payments in urban areas than in suburban areas. Moreover, in suburban areas, the number of night staff has a substantial impact on monthly payments. The results can help provide investment suggestions in certain cases depending on the amount of investment capital..

Vo Hong Tu, Nguyen Thuy Trang and Mitsuyasu Yabe, Economic Efficiency of Intensive Shrimp Farming in Transforming Areas of The Coastal Mekong Delta, Journal of the Faculty of Agriculture, Kyushu University, 66, 2, 267-275, 2021.06, Changes of farming activities to intensive shrimp in the coastal Mekong Delta have been happening as an inevitable trend under the pressures of climate change and salinity intrusion. This transformation is associated with high risks in terms of production and management. Thus, the study was conducted to propose solutions for improving economic efficiency of intensive shrimp farmers. The study conducted face–to–face interviews with 125 farmers in both Soc Trang and Kien Giang provinces. By using one–step stochastic frontier analysis, the study showed that the average economic efficiency of shrimp farming in Kien Giang is 89.98%, which is not significant different to that in Soc Trang (86.95%). These efficiency indexes indicate that at the current output level, the shrimp farmers in Soc Trang and Kien Giang can reduce by 10.02% and 13.05%, respectively, of the total observed variable cost. The results also show that three factors have significant effects on the economic efficiency, namely the number of ponds, pond size and density, in which the number of ponds had a negative effect and the other two factors had positive effects on economic efficiency..

Vo Hong Tu, Nguyen Thuy Trang, Nguyen Bich Hong, Le Thanh SON, Chau Thi Le Duyen and Mitsuyasu Yabe, Environmental Efficiency of Intensive Shrimp Farming in Transforming Areas of The Coastal Mekong Delta, Journal of the Faculty of Agriculture, Kyushu University, 66, 2, 277-289, 2021.06, [URL], Efficient use of environmentally detrimental inputs in agricultural production activities in general and intensive shrimp farming in particular is very important for achieving sustainable development goals, especially for the vulnerable coastal areas of the Vietnamese Mekong Delta. In order to provide solutions for improving the environmental efficiency of intensive shrimp farmers who recently transformed their farming systems, the study conducted face–to–face interviews with 160 farmers in Kien Giang and Soc Trang provinces. The study employed one–step stochastic frontier analysis to estimate the output–oriented technical efficiency, then measure the environmental efficiency for each shrimp farmers. Besides, the study also employed Tobit regression to investigate the factors affecting the environmental efficiency. The study found that the average output–oriented technical efficiency of shrimp farmers is 92.32%. The average efficiency scores in Soc Trang and Kien Giang are 90.54% and 96.89%, respectively. The study also found that the average environmental efficiency of the converted shrimp farmers in the study sites is 91.77%, specifically 89.73% in Soc Trang and 97.02% in Kien Giang. This result indicates that the shrimp farmers in Soc Trang
and Kien Giang provinces can reduce by 10.27% and 2.08%, respectively, of the total environmentally detrimental inputs (feed, medicine, and fuel) without compromising output level while keeping normal inputs constant. The Tobit regression indicated that there are five factors having significant effects on the environmental efficiency. Of which, experience, pond area and density have positive effects while location and number of ponds have negative effects on the environmental efficiency..

pay for an ecosystem conservation program in U Minh national forest, one of the most important protected
areas in the Mekong Delta. The results showed that most households are willing to make a monthly contribution of about VND 85,515 (US$ 3.72) toward the program. Overall, the urban residents of the Mekong Delta have agreed to contribute about US$ 55 million annually to the U Minh forest ecosystem conservation project. This annual aggregate contribution is relatively large enough to elicit interest from the government, policymakers, and other stakeholders to financially invest in preserving the forest ecosystem..

Le Thi Thu Huong, Yoshifumi Takahashi, Hisako Nomura, Cao Truong Son, Takeru Kusudo, Mitsuyasu Yabe, Manure management and pollution levels of contract and non-contract livestock farming in Vietnam, Science of the Total Environment, 10.1016/j.scitotenv.2019.136200, 710, 2020.03, [URL], In analyzing contract farming of livestock production, many studies have focused on the economic aspect. This paper offers the environmental issue by investigating manure management and pollution levels of contract farming (CF) and non-contract farming (NCF) livestock producers in Vietnam. By surveying 270 pig farms and applying logit model, we found that commercial pigpen type of CF reduces the probability of manure separation, while larger garden area and knowledge of composting increase it. By analyzing the wastewater samples collected from 59 farms and employing nearest neighbor matching technique, this paper indicated that CF reduces the pollutants' concentrations in effluents. Using OLS regression models, we found out that manure separation contributes to a reduction in nutrient matters, while biogas plant or combination of biogas plant and stabilization ponds helps to diminish organic matters. The study results suggest that the government should regulate the minimum required land area for installation of the combined manure treatment plants (MTPs). Additionally, to recycle manure and improve nutrient matters in effluent, advanced technologies for separating solid manure are extremely necessary for CF producers. Furthermore, we recommend the government to build mechanisms to compel agribusiness firms engaging in their liability for the environmental side effects caused by their CF producers..

The first area is Dai Tarn village completely unaffected by salt water intrusion at the period from the end of 2015 to the beginning of 2016, the most heavily salinity-affected time in the Vietnamese Mekong Delta. Two other areas were Lieu Tu and Lich Hoi Thuong village rated as high and very high salinity respectively. The results showed that rice yield loss due to saltwater intrusion was estimated from 2.5 to 4.05 tons ha-1 a year..

Le Thi Thanh Loan, Yoshifumi Takahashi, Hisako Nomura, Mitsuyasu Yabe, Modeling home composting behavior toward sustainable municipal organic waste management at the source in developing countries, Resources, Conservation and Recycling, 10.1016/j.resconrec.2018.08.016, 140, 65-71, 2019.01, [URL], Home composting (HC) has become an increasingly important consideration in the framework of sustainable municipal organic waste (MOW) management in developing countries. We develop, for the first time, two HC behavior models, which include households’ decisions to participate in a HC scheme and the level of HC participation. By applying Logit and Ordered logit models, a survey of 202 respondents in rural areas of Hoi An, Vietnam, indicates that households’ decisions to get involved in a HC scheme and the level of HC participation are affected by motivational factors such as knowledge about HC, attitude toward it, and owning a garden. We then explore the differences between the influencing factors for the two models. Interestingly, while participation in the HC training program influence the decision to participate in the HC scheme, the factor appears unimportant in increasing the level of HC practice. In addition, once the HC participation decision has been made, we find that pro-environmental behavior (such as habit of reusing plastic bags and reducing wastefulness) could promote a higher level of HC practice. These findings could help policy makers in promoting HC behavior to enhance a sustainable MOW management strategy at the household level..

Young Man Yoon, Joshua Nizel Halder, Tak Won Rang, Soo Ryang Kim, Mitsuyasu Yabe, Myung Gyu Lee, Derivation of monitoring factors to produce liquid manure fertilizers from the aerobic liquid fertilization process of pig slurries, Journal of the Faculty of Agriculture, Kyushu University, 63, 1, 149-157, 2018.02, In this study, 150 liquid fertilizers in 2012 and 70 liquid fertilizers in 2015 were sampled and analyzed to derive the process monitoring factors for the production of stabilized liquid fertilizer during the liquid composting of pig slurry. Dissolved oxygen (DO) and oxidation-reduction potential (ORP), which are major operating factors of the liquid composting process, tend to increase with the improvement of organic stabilization degree in the liquid composting of pig slurry, but pH and suspended solid (SS) did not show any significant difference regardless of the organic stabilization degree of liquid fertilizer. Electric conductivity (EC), soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD
Cr
), total nitrogen (TN), and ammonium nitrogen (NH
+
4
-N) showed a significant decreasing tendency, and nitrate nitrogen (N0
-
3
-N) and total phosphorus (TP) showed no significant differences with the improvement of organic stabilization degree in the liquid composting of pig slurry. And there was a significant correlation between the EC, TN, and NH
+
4
-N parameters in the correlation analysis of the chemical properties of the stabilized liquid fertilizer. Therefore, EC, SCOD
Cr
, TN, and NH
+
4
-N were derived as chemical parameters that could distinguish the characteristics of stabilized liquid fertilizer. Especially, the EC parameter was evaluated as an useful indicator for the quality control of liquid fertilizer in the monitoring of overall liquid composting process of the pig slurry..
38. Ting gui Chen, Gan Lin, Mitsuyasu Yabe, Impact of outward FDI on firms’ productivity over the food industry
evidence from China, China Agricultural Economic Review, 10.1108/CAER-12-2017-0246, 11, 4, 655-671, 2019.10, [URL], Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to study the impact of outward foreign direct investment (OFDI) on the productivity of parent firms over the food industry. Design/methodology/approach: The main data in this paper are derived from the China Industrial Enterprise Database 2005–2013 and a data set of Chinese firms’ OFDI information. Then this paper uses propensity score matching to match the treatment and control groups with firm characteristics and combines that with the differences-in-differences method to estimate the real effect of OFDI on total factor productivity. Findings: The food firm’s OFDI significantly improves the parent firm’s productivity (known as the OFDI own-firm effect), but this promotion only exists in the short term. The OFDI own-firm effect of food firms differs remarkably as the sub-sectors, regions and ownership of firms vary. The food firm’s OFDI in “non-tax havens” and high-income destinations has a significantly stronger effect on the parent firm’s productivity. FDI, R&D and exporting can effectively strengthen the OFDI own-firm effect of food firms. Originality/value: The effect of OFDI on food industry productivity has not been researched yet. This paper aims to fill this gap. This paper further divides the characteristics of food firms into different sub-sectors, regions and ownership types for a comparative analysis, with the aim of conducting a more comprehensive study at the micro-level of firms. In addition, an investigation into which factors influence the degree of the OFDI own-firm effect at the micro-level has not been found in the literature. This paper will draw its own conclusions..
39. Vo Hong Tu, Nguyen Duy Can, Yoshifumi Takahashi, Steven W. Kopp, Mitsuyasu Yabe, Technical and environmental efficiency of eco-friendly rice production in the upstream region of the Vietnamese Mekong delta, Environment, Development and Sustainability, 10.1007/s10668-018-0140-0, 1-24, 2018.04, [URL], Although public policy makers, farmers, and agricultural experts have invested considerable efforts to promote environmentally friendly rice production methods, the adoption of these practices is quite low in the Vietnamese Mekong Delta. One explanation for this is an underestimation of the environmental and economic values of these practices. The present study aimed at estimating environmental and technical efficiencies for all methods of rice production and then comparing each method in terms of efficiencies and economic benefits. Survey data included responses from farmers who used either eco-friendly or conventional rice cultivation methods. Latent class stochastic frontier analysis shows that the average technical efficiency across all methods was 85.02% and environmental efficiency across all methods was 22.58%. Among individual methods, floating rice had the highest technical and environmental efficiency scores. Ecologically engineered rice had the lowest economic and environmental performance. The average environmental efficiency of conventional rice production was 16.25%, which is significantly higher than that of ecologically engineered rice, large-scale rice, and GlobalGAP rice. The results indicate considerable overuse of agrochemical inputs and also point to other specific factors of production that influence these efficiencies. Several public policy and agricultural management recommendations are derived from the study..

The highest concentrations of copper (31.1 mg/L) and cadmium (0.08 mg/L) were found in LOFs from the Hita biogas plant. Only ofloxacin and sulfapyridine were detected in total 89 antibiotics screened. TBT, DBT, and perfluorooctane sulfonate were present at low concentrations in the LOFs from all four locations. Among the 952 semi-volatile organic compounds, 78 compounds were detected in at least one sample and were present at concentrations between 1.2 and 139.6 mg/L. On the basis of comparisons with previous studies and quality standards for the use of organic fertilizers, the concentrations of contaminants in the studied LOFs indicate that they might be safe for agricultural purposes..

Cost and benefit analysis in the mekong delta, Vietnam, Journal of the Faculty of Agriculture, Kyushu University, 62, 1, 189-195, 2017.02, The study used the approach of cost - benefit analysis (CBA) to assess the economic feasibility of the drainage improvement project in Chien Luoc hamlet, Can Tho City. The study has conducted face-To-face interviews of 60 households in the hamlet to estimate the economic loss of households due to flooding. Economic protection of loss is considered as the benefit of this project. The study showed that the annual economic loss of a household was around 12.35 million VND and total cost of the drainage improvement project was estimated about 153,819 USD, equivalent to 3.23 billion VND. CBA results showed that the net present value (NPV) of the project was estimated about 25.869 billion VND, 107% for the internal return rate (IRR) and 9.7 times for the benefit-cost ratio (CBR) at the discount rate of 10%. Therefore, the drainage improvement project in Chien Luoc hamlet was economically feasible and socially beneficial..

Seung Hun Lee, Hyeon Soo Jo, Myung Gyu Lee, Mitsuyasu Yabe, Heekwon Ahn, Effect of substrate to inoculum ratio on methane production and organic matter removal during solid state anaerobic digestion of beef manure and sawdust mixture, Journal of the Faculty of Agriculture, Kyushu University, 62, 1, 197-203, 2017.02, This study was conducted to determine the optimal substrate/inoculum (S/I) ratio for solid state anaerobic digestion (SS-AD) of beef manure and sawdust bedding mixtures. The organic material removal and methane yield performance were evaluated at five different S/I levels (1,2,4, 50, and beef manure alone on a VS basis) for 49 days at 37°C. Results showed that biodegradable volatile solids (BVS) reduction of beef manure alone test unit was 76% which was not significantly different from the rest of all inoculated test units. The methane production potential of all five test units showed similar levels (135 to 154 mL/g VS), regardless of S/I ratio. Although it showed similar methane production potential, the beef manure alone and S/I ratio 50 test units showed the highest methane yields of 7.3 and 7.2 based on the volume of methane pro-duced per volume of digester, respectively. In addition, when considering utilization efficiency of the available digester volume, the beef manure alone treatment was 15% higher than that of the S/I ratio 50 treatment. These results reveal that the beef manure and sawdust bedding mixture does not require inoculation to improve SS-AD performance..

In this study, 66 liquid manure samples were collected from national livestock manure co-recycling centers. These 66 samples were tested and classified into three categories based on Liquid Fertilizer Germination Index (LFGI). In addition, the physiochemical parameters of manure specimens were tested, including pH, NaCl, total sulfur (TS), total nitrogen (TN), ammonium-nitrogen (NH -N), nitrate-nitrogen (NO-N), total phosphorus (TP), potassium (K), and electrical conductivity (EC). EC had a positive correlation with TN (0.879), NH-N (0.816), K (0.693), and NaCl (0.625) with a significance of p

Total forty heads of Hanwoo (about 412 kg body weight) were raised in five pens (7.5 m! per head) for 76 days. Average daily manure production without bedding was 13.4 kg/head. The amount of daily manure production including the bedding was 14.9 kg/head, which is 14% lesser than conventional S. Korean Hanwoo manure production unit (17.3 kg/head). During the first 30 days, moisture content of sawdust beddings were considerably increased up to 89% of water holding capacity (WHC) of sawdust. It maintained a very stable level between 30 to 50 days. Academically, 30 days after adding fresh bedding seems to be appropriate replacement time based on WHC. Whereas, from a practical standpoint, maximum 50 days should be acceptable by considering several other factors, such as the expense of purchasing bedding material, the cleanliness of the feeding environment, and the availability of manure treatment..

The city of Hoi An, Vietnam, implemented a mandatory MOW-SAS program in 2012. Using Structural Equation Modeling, this study investigates the psychological driving forces behind households’ behaviors toward the MOW-SAS program. This study finds that moral norm (moral perception of what is good or bad), attitude toward sorted waste, and situational factors (issues concerning physically sorting garbage, such as time, space, and lack of family cooperation) can significantly affect household behaviors toward MOW-SAS. It confirms the need for supplying frequent environmental educational campaigns and highlighting the benefits of MOW-SAS programs. Moreover, the study finds that households’ system trust in local authority concerning the MOW-SAS program is an important driving force behind the behavior. Therefore, recommendation is also made on the need to develop strong leadership in local authorities through improving: (1) reliability (ability to effectively treat sorted waste), (2) legitimacy (punitive measures for non-participants), and (3) effectiveness (dissemination of information about the benefits of MOW-SAS programs) for promoting MOW-SAS..

Restoration is required to recover mangrove ecosystems, and communities' involvement is a primary factor to reduce the threat to mangroves. Their participation might be interpreted as the appropriate decision concerning conservation and utilization of mangroves. Using a contingent valuation approach, this study assesses mangroves' values to local communities through their willingness to contribute labor to obtain monetary value. Results showed that the opportunity cost of time was valued at IDR 398.76 thousand (US$29.99) a month or IDR 4.79 million (US$359.90) per year. A total annual benefit of mangrove restoration using the wage rate of time (WRT) is IDR 143 billion (US$10.77 million) per year. Accessing such information is crucial to making the appropriate decisions about conservation of mangroves within the context of developing countries that have poor coastal communities and low incomes. Tobit regression determined that five variables affect willingness to provide labor time and WRT significantly for mangrove restoration. These findings can support decision-makers with the relevant information for assessing a mangrove restoration project..

Introduction to East Asia Environmental Studies
, 10.1007/978-4-431-55819-4_13, 171-181, 2016.01, [URL], Commodities and services traded in markets are priced, and economic activity is conducted when people compare and consider the prices and quality/quantity of products on sale. However, it is difficult to form a market for the environmental commodity because of its non-excludability. That is, it can be used without paying a price. Therefore, it becomes difficult to fulfill supply and demand appropriate for its value, and both undersupply and overuse occur. As a result, it has become necessary to determine standards for the adequate supply and use of the environmental commodity by means of economic valuation, comparing and considering its value. Here, various methods to quantify the monetary value have been developed. The preference-independent valuation method evaluates environmental value based on scientific data, while the preference-dependent valuation method is based on peoples’ preferences. This chapter focuses on the latter method..

This study examined the knowledge, attitudes, and practices concerning leptospirosis among agricultural (n = 152) and non-agricultural (n = 115) workers in the lakeshore communities of Calamba and Los Baños, Laguna, Philippines. The findings showed no significant differences for the knowledge and attitude scores between agricultural and non-agricultural workers. However, agricultural workers had significantly lower prevention practice scores than non-agricultural workers. The ordinary least squares regression model identified gender, use of broadcast media as a source of health information, and knowledge and attitudes about leptospirosis as significant predictors of prevention practices common to both workers. Higher educational attainment was significantly associated with prevention practices among agricultural workers, while higher age and income level were significantly associated with prevention practices among non-agricultural workers. Public health interventions to improve leptospirosis knowledge and prevention practices should include health education and promotion programs, along with the strengthening of occupational health and safety programs in the agricultural sector..

The certification criteria of fertilizer and pollutant properties have been developed, but no certification method has been developed for testing the maturity of liquid manure fertilizer until now. Meanwhile, the germination index is a well-known parameter when measuring the maturity of fertilizer. Several methods are advised for measuring the germination of compost-based fertilizer. Until now, there was no specific method for certifying or performing a germination index test for liquid fertilizers. In this study, the ordinary germination index (GI) or Solid fertilizer germination Index (SFGI) is performed for 23 solid-composted fertilizers to evaluate the method's applicability when the average SFGI count is 137. However, when this method is applied to 26 liquid anaerobic manures, the average SFGI count was 22, with germination only happening for eight samples. When the LFGI method was applied for the same samples, the average LFGI count was 30 with 10 germinated samples. LFGI was applied to 66 liquid aerobic manure fertilizers that had mechanical maturity tests and were classified as 22 matured, 25 semi-matured, and 19 immature samples. The average LFGI results were 90 for matured samples, 25 for semi-matured, and 5 for immature. This study focused on finding a proper and acceptable germination index testing method to examine the maturity of liquid manure fertilizer..

Implications for cost savings and environmental protection, Journal of the Faculty of Agriculture, Kyushu University, 61, 2, 383-390, 2016.09, Chemical fertilizer and pesticide are widely used by tea farmers in Vietnam to increase yield and combat risk associated with pests and diseases. However, their indiscriminate use can lead to various environmental problems. This study utilizes stochastic frontier analysis to measure the environmental efficiency of Vietnamese tea farms, taking explicitly into account the economic effects of chemical fertilizer and pesticide on tea production. We find that these environmentally detrimental inputs are overused in the farms, and there is considerable scope for decreasing their application with the current technology. Agricultural policies considering both the production and the environmental efficiency of chemical fertilizer and pesticide may assist tea farmers to save production costs and conserve the environment..

A case study in Beijing City, Sustainability (Switzerland), 10.3390/su8101083, 8, 10, 2016.10, [URL], High participation rates by the public in authority projects are key in increasing resident recycling levels. Understanding waste separation behavior is crucial to achieving sustainable waste management within such household-based schemes. To identify the driving forces behind the seldom-discussed kitchen garbage separation behavior, five psychological factors, namely, attitude, perceived behavior control, subjective norms, moral norms, and responsibility denial, are established. Our data originate from a social study of Beijing citizens conducted in July 2013 (n = 362). Through structural equation modeling, we find that moral norms are consistently the most important predictor of household kitchen waste (KW) separation behavior. Subjective norms have a larger effect on such behavior than responsibility denial. Data analysis shows that perceived behavior control contributes significantly and independently to the explanation of such behavior. By contrast, attitude towards KW separation is found to be significantly negatively correlated with separation behavior. In conclusion, the model with direct and indirect effects of psychological factors explains 50.3% of the variance in household KW source separation behavior. Implications of the results for the promotion of household KW separation programs are discussed..
