[Outline of research, education, and social activities]
In research activity, the relationship between flower color and flower pigment constitutions in horticultural crops, and breeding of new ornamental crops originated in tropical and subtropical regions are my main subjects. For execution of these research works, collection of plant materials were not conducted only domestic area but also in foreign countries with fully consideration to CBD (Convention on Biological Diversity).

Current and Past Project
  • Through the current IGPF (Income Generation Project for Farmers at BOP using ICT), we introduced a method of cultivating vegetables by using appropriate amount of chemicals and organic fertilizers. We disseminated the technology to the model farmers by using ICT based tele-centers in villages and promoted sales activities. As a result, we have confirmed the effectiveness of tele-centers as a central point for collecting and providing agriculture information. From now on, to meet the demand of the market and utilize the farmers’ expertise, it became necessary to establish a community of farmers producing value added quality vegetables and sell them at a higher price by using these tele-centers. It will bring extra income for farmers and provide a big opportunity to get rid of the poverty.
  • Field survey and genetic variation of wild azalea (Rhododendron simsii) which distribute in moutaineous area of Vietnam will be investigated and the interspecific crossing between this wild azalea and Japanese azalea cultivars will be carried out for breeding.

Miyajima Ikuo, Kurotani Yuki, Kobayashi Nobuo, Soto Silvina, Facciuto Gabriela, Interspecific crosses between Jacaranda mimosifolia and J. cuspidifolia (Bignoniaceae), 2nd International Symposium on Woody Ornamentals of the Temperate Zone, 2012.07, Jacaranda mimosifolia, which has beautiful, long-lasting blue flowers, is a subtropical tree native to northern Argentina that has been widely planted not only in subtropical but also temperate areas of countries such as Australia, Italy, Japan, Spain and the United States where there is no risk of frost. We are conducting a breeding program for jacaranda with dwarf and juvenile flowering characteristics that are suitable for potted plants. Interspecific crosses of jacaranda have previously been conducted among species such as J. mimosifolia, J. cuspidifolia, J. micrantha, and J. puberula, with seeds resulting from several crossings. However, there is little information about the cross-compatibility or the morphological characteristics of their progeny. J. cuspidifolia, which has reddish-purple flowers and larger leaves than J. mimosifolia and is also distributed in northern Argentina, has juvenile flowering characteristics. We attempted interspecific crossing between J. mimosifolia and J. cuspidifolia. A relatively high frequency of fruit set was observed in crosses of J. mimosifolia x J. cuspidifolia, whereas very little fruit set was observed in the reciprocal cross (J. cuspidifolia x J. mimosifolia). Based on microscopic observations, pollen tubes penetrated the style and reached the ovary in crosses of J. mimosifolia x J. cuspidifolia. On the other hand, few pollen tubes reached the ovary in the J. cuspidifolia x J. mimosifolia crosses. The germination rate of seeds obtained in crosses between J. mimosifolia x J. cuspidifolia was relatively high, whereas it was quite low in the seeds obtained from the reciprocal cross. All of the seedlings obtained from these interspecific crosses were confirmed as hybrids by isozyme analysis. Several characteristics of these hybrids and their parents were also investigated..
