4. Human Network connects Asian Institutes with World-wide Institutes for Earth Resources and the Environment
   Humanity is faced with the urgent problem of the exhaustion of resources while other global environmental problems push from behind. In particular, the rapid increase in resource and energy consumption in developing Asian countries has cast a shadow over the sustainability of human activities that Japan has achieved as an Asian nation and one of the world’s advanced nations. Cooperative studies and activities by young researchers are an important element in resolving problems found in Asia. This project aimed to promote international activities related to research and the training of young graduate students and research associate researchers who are investigating the problems we presently face, and carried out for 5 years during FY2008 to FY2012.
   Divisions of the School of Engineering, Kyushu University that are related to earth resources and the environment will be strengthened as the center that will connect Asian institutes with other institutes around the world in appropriate areas of research and education through the present project. The project had function to promote the training of young researchers and graduate students in an international cooperative network with four Institutions; Lund University, the Environmental System Research Institute, Inc. (ESRI), New Hampshire University and the University of Alberta. These have been advanced institutes working in the specified areas focused on by the project. The goal of the project was to link young researchers so they could work together to analyze and find solutions to problems arising in the Asian region that are related to the Earth’s resources and environment. The project was preceded with a systematic program to provide research and training opportunities for young researchers. They were trained to take a global viewpoint from within the international cooperation-related network drawing on skills in the fields of earth resources and the environment. The project was over on March 31st, 2013, however the systematic dispatch system is continued and further cooperation is enhanced between Kyushu University and the international cooperative institutions. .

Kyuro Sasaki, Research Relating to Unconventional Resource Development and CCS, Nobel Carbon Resource Sciences NEWSLETTER, Vol.8, pp.28-29., 2013.03, In connection with the “Novel Carbon Resource Sciences: Coal-based Eco-innovations” Program, we conducted research into the development of mineral resources and in situ production techniques for heavy oils, such as the unconventional resources, methane hydrate, and oil sand. In addition, we conducted research into enhanced capture methods for oil and coal seam gas that utilize CO2 and microorganisms with the aim of capturing and storing/utilizing carbon dioxide (CCS/CCU) and into underground thermal environment control etc.

Total 51 young researchers have been selected by the stealing committee with selections based on application forms and interviews for each partner institute. According to longstanding cooperative relationships among professors, a project management system, which flexibly connects young researchers belonging to the applying university to the overseas research institutes, has been provided based on cooperative relationships. In addition, professors in charge (academic supervisors) have advices and support researches in consideration of the problems in staying the partner institutes. After providing follow up workshops on presentation skill, mental health and securities at overseas, young researchers were dispatched, and they were supported by supervisors at the partner institutes.
The Symposium on Earth Science and Technology has been successfully held every year from 2008 as a joint planned conference with the overseas partner institutes. In the symposium, there were total about 200 participants attended, and over 100 young researchers, including 70 foreign young researchers from Asian and African countries and 30 Japanese young researchers presented their full papers in English based on their research activities. And, the 2012 symposium was held at Institute of Technology Bandung which is one of cooperative institutes related this project.
We expect that this project provided an environment for carrying out the training of young researchers who will be human resources and future driving force to overcome various technological and comprehensive problems on earth resources, global and local environment not only in Asia also in the world to get sustainability of human beans.

Kyuro Sasaki, Masaru Kiya, Unsteady Reverse-flow Measurements by Split-film Probes, Laser and hot wire/film velocimetries and their applications; Proceedings of the third Osaka symposium on flow measuring-techniques (Power Co., Ltd.), 1987.06, Split-film probes have been applied to the measurement of turbulence properties in an intermittent reverse-flow region. Two kinds of split-film probes of o. 153mm diameter Manufactured by KANOMAX Co, Ltd. are employed. One has the split-plane normal to the main flow and is able to measure the longitudinal velocity component and reversals of flow direction; the other has the split plane parallel to the main flow and measures the lateral velocity component. Their response to the magnitude and direction of the velocity vector is statistically calibrated in a uniform flow in a wind tunnel. The frequency response of the probe is checked by comparing the longitudinal velocity spectra with those obtained by a single hot-wire probe in a grid-generated turbulence. The split-film probes are used to measure the reverse-flow region in the separation-reattachment flow formed at the leading edge of a blunt flat plate with square corners. The time-mean, root-mean-square values of the fluctuating velocity and the reverse flow intermittency are successfully obtained by the split-film probes.

26. 佐々木 久郎, シングルホットワイヤによる逆流領域の近似測定方法, 流れの計測, 1986.06, 研究設備の都合上、レーザードップラー流速計やスプリットフィルムプローブなどの測定方法によらない簡便な測定方法があれば工学的に有用である。ここでは、現在広範囲に使用されているシングルホットワイヤプロープを用いた熱線流速計によって逆流の間欠領域を測定する場合の時間平均値とr.m.s.値に対する補正方法を提案する他、再付着点(零速度点)および逆流時間割合の近似測定方法もあわせて示す。.
