Outline Activities
He is mainly interested in theory, method and decision support system in risk management for agriculture, food, bio-resource and environment. He has received seven academic prizes from the academic societies. Recently, He is interested in decision support systems for food safety including appropriate use of agrochemicals and animal medicine because the risk of inappropriate use of them is crucial to both farmers and consumers. He has established a non-profit organization to promote and extend these information systems to the society. He has published more than 40 books and book chapters, 100 scholarly journal articles, 150 conference proceedings papers, and many reports and articles in the popular press. His scholarly journal original papers on these fields have been appeared in the Journal of Japanese Society of Agricultural Informatics, the Journal of the Farm Management Society of Japan, the Journal of the Agricultural Economics Society of Japan, the Journal of the Operation Society of Japan and the Journal of the International Society of Agricultural Economists. He also published several books in these fields.

two-stage DEA model on 110 paddy fields of a large-scale farm, Paddy and Water Environment, 10.1007/s10333-018-0652-0, 16, 4, 643-654, 2018.10, Abstract: Water management is increasingly important for rice productivity to maintain soil temperature and fertility with the presence of global warming. Meanwhile, rice production in Japan is in urgent need to reduce the costs through improving the efficiency and market competitiveness. This paper aims to measure effect of water depth and water temperature on rice yield of individual paddy fields and improve the practice of water management for them. In the first stage, we measure the production efficiency of rice yield through the adoption of data envelopment analysis. The results indicate that enlarged scale of the paddy fields increases the efficiency, and rice quality can be improved more than quantity. Moreover, the most inefficiently used inputs include the amount of fertilizer nitrogen and the soil capacity, which is a compound measurement of 21 soil chemical properties. In the second stage, after comparing the 20 paddy fields with highest and lowest technical efficiency, an observation shows that the rice yield is much more affected by water temperature than by water depth. The data of all the variables used in this study were sampled in 2015 and comprised of 110 paddy fields of Koshihikari, one of the most popular Japanese rice varieties, from a large-scale farm located in Kanto Region of Japan. In the analysis, the outputs include yields of raw paddy, paddy with 15% moisture, unsorted brown rice, sorted brown rice, milled grain rice, and perfect grain rice. Fukuhara, Impact of soil chemical properties on rice yield in 116 paddy fields sampled from a large-scale farm in Kinki Region, Japan, 4th International Conference on Agricultural and Biological Sciences, ABS 2018 IOP Conference Series: Earth and Environmental Science, 10.1088/1755-1315/185/1/012026, 185, 1, 2018.08, Japan is in urgent need to reduce the production costs through increasing rice yield, which depends highly on soil fertility. This study aimed to investigate determinants of rice yield, from the perspectives of fertilizer nitrogen and soil chemical properties. The data were sampled in 2014 and 2015, from 116 paddy fields, on a large-scale farm located in the Kinki Region of Japan. The rice included Koshihikari and other seven varieties, cultivated in conventional, special and organic regimes. The nine soil chemical properties included pH, cation exchange capacity, ammonium nitrogen, effective phosphoric and silicic acid, saturation of base elements, exchangeable potassium, lime and magnesia. Multiple regression analysis indicated that positive effects were identified for silicic acid, exchangeable potassium, and ammonium nitrogen; while phosphoric acid affects the yield negatively, controlling the rice variety, cultivation regime, and field area. Finally, countermeasures were put forward to improve soil fertility and rice yield..

Fukuhara, Impact of soil chemical properties on rice yield in 116 paddy fields sampled from a large-scale farm in Kinki Region, Japan, 4th International Conference on Agricultural and Biological Sciences, ABS 2018, 2018.08, Japan is in urgent need to reduce the production costs through increasing rice yield, which depends highly on soil fertility. This study aimed to investigate determinants of rice yield, from the perspectives of fertilizer nitrogen and soil chemical properties. The data were sampled in 2014 and 2015, from 116 paddy fields, on a large-scale farm located in the Kinki Region of Japan. The rice included Koshihikari and other seven varieties, cultivated in conventional, special and organic regimes. The nine soil chemical properties included pH, cation exchange capacity, ammonium nitrogen, effective phosphoric and silicic acid, saturation of base elements, exchangeable potassium, lime and magnesia. Multiple regression analysis indicated that positive effects were identified for silicic acid, exchangeable potassium, and ammonium nitrogen; while phosphoric acid affects the yield negatively, controlling the rice variety, cultivation regime, and field area. Finally, countermeasures were put forward to improve soil fertility and rice yield..
