A key to species of Dryocosmus in East Asia is given. Although the members of Dryocosmus have been known to induce galls on the subgenus Quercus of the genus Quercus and the genera Castanea, Castanopsis, Chrysolepis, and Lithocarpus of Fagaceae, this is the first record of this gall wasp genus from the strictly Asian subgenus Cyclobalanopsis of the genus Quercus. The discovery of two new species of Dryocosmus associated with Q. (C.) acuta suggests the exceptionally diverse host range of Dryocosmus and the species richness of Cynipini on this plant subgenus in Asia..
29. Nakatada Wachi, Yoshihisa Abe, Nobuyuki Inomata, ALFRED EDWARD SZMIDT, Hidenori Tachida, Speciation history of three closely related oak gall wasps, Andricus mukaigawae, A. kashiwaphilus, and A. pseudoflos (Hymenoptera: Cynipidae) inferred from nuclear and mitochondrial DNA sequences
, Molecular Ecology, 21, 4681-4694, 2012.10, The Andricus mukaigawae complex of oak gall wasps is composed of cyclically parthenogenetic species: A. mukaigawae and Andricus kashiwaphilus, and a parthenogenetic species, Andricus pseudoflos. The component species differ in life history, host plant, karyotype, and asexual gall shape, although little difference is found in the external morphology of asexual adults. To understand the speciation history of this species complex, DNA sequences of one mitochondrial region and nine nuclear gene regions were investigated. The genetic relationship among the species suggested that a loss of sex occurred after host shift. Unexpectedly, two or three distinct groups in the parthenogenetic species, A. pseudoflos, were revealed by both mitochondrial and nuclear DNA data. Gene flow in nuclear genes from the species not infected by Wolbachia (A. kashiwaphilus) to the species infected by it (A. mukaigawae) was suggested by a method based on coalescent simulations. On the other hand, gene flow in mitochondrial genes was suggested to be in the opposite direction. These findings indicate possible involvement of Wolbachia infection in the speciation process of the A. mukaigawae complex..

Tatsuya Ide, Nakatada Wachi, Yoshihisa Abe, Three new species and a new record of Cycloneuroterus (Hymenoptera: Cynipidae: Cynipini) inducing galls on Cyclobalanopsis in Japan , Annals of the Entomological Society of America, 105, 539-549, 2012.07, The following three new species of Cycloneuroterus Melika et Tang (Hymenoptera: Cynipidae: Cynipini) from Japan are described: C. akagashiphilus from Quercus (Cyclobalanopsis) acuta and C. hisashii and C. arakashiphagus from Q. (C.) glauca. Quercus (C.) acuta is recorded as a host plant of Cynipini for the first time. Cycloneuroterus fortuitusus Tang et Melika, previously known from Taiwan, is newly recorded for Japan. A key to all eight recognized species of Cycloneuroterus is provided. The hitherto known five species of Cycloneuroterus were recorded in Taiwan only and four of them induce galls on the strictly Asian subgenus Cyclobalanopsis. Therefore, the discovery of the three new species of Cycloneuroterus in Japan confirms the close association between Cycloneuroterus and Cyclobalanopsis, and suggests the existence of the potentially diverse cynipid fauna on this subgenus in Asia. More extensive sampling is expected to reveal the species richness in the Cynipini in the region..

TETSUYA ADACHI-HAGIMORI, KAZUKI MIURA, Yoshihisa Abe, Gene flow between sexual and asexual strains of parasitic wasps: a possible case of sympatric speciation caused by a parthenogenesis-inducing bacterium, Journal of Evolutionary Biology, 24, 1254-1262, 2011.06, Sympatric speciation is strictly defined as the emergence of two species from a population in which mating has been random with respect to the place of birth of the mating partners. Mathematical models have shown that sympatric speciation is possible, but very few examples have been documented in nature. In this article, we demonstrate that arrhenotokous and thelytokous strains of a parasitic wasp, Neochrysocharis formosa, speciated sympatrically through infection by a symbiotic bacterium Rickettsia for the following reasons: First, Rickettsia infection was detected in all of the thelytokous strains collected throughout Japan. Second, the arrhenotokous and thelytokous strains have been collected sympatrically. Third, crossing experiments between the two strains did not result in fertilized offspring. In addition, the two strains were genetically isolated at the nuclear and mitochondrial genes. Fourth, the two strains showed a sister relationship in nuclear 28S rRNA gene. Finally, thelytokous females treated with antibiotics produced Rickettsia-free male offspring of the same reproductive form as arrhenotokous females indicating that the thelytokous strain could have speciated sympatrically from an individual of the arrhenotokous strain..
