Eiji Harada, Ken-ichiro Iida, Susumu Shiota, Hiroaki Nakayama, Shin-Ichi Yoshida, Glucose metabolism in Legionella pneumophila: dependence on the Entner-Doudoroff pathway and connection with intracellular bacterial growth., Journal of Bacteriology, 192, 11, 2892-2899, 2010.06, ヒトに重篤な肺炎を引き起こすレジオネラ・ニューモフィラのグルコース代謝とそれが細胞内増殖に与える影響について研究を行った。その結果、従来グルコースを利用しないとされていた本菌が、Entner-Doudoroff 経路を介してグルコースを代謝していることを明確に示した。またEntner-Doudoroff 経路の酵素をコードする遺伝子をトランスポゾンにより変異させグルコース代謝能力を欠損させた株では、in vitroにおいては野生株と比較し増殖に差はなかったが、真核細胞内においては増殖能が欠損することを明らかにした。グルコース代謝が菌の細胞内増殖に影響を与えることは過去に報告がなく、非常に興味深いと思われ、そのメカニズムについて今後の更なる発展が期待される。.
