Research
Research Interests
- Regarding my research, my focus has been on contemporary Japan, particularly subjects related to gender and work, sex industry and youth. My doctoral dissertation examines the rising popularity of the modern host club industry in Japan, where young Japanese heterosexual men provide assorted companionship to young Japanese women who are often sex workers of varying backgrounds. It investigates complex interactions between socioeconomic, organizational, and individual factors that modernized and brought about the successful development of the host club industry. Recently the research has been expanded to investigate 1) various kinds of violence that appear in the host club phenomenon, 2) the recent urban development of the adult entertainment districts in Tokyo and regulations towards the sex industry, 3) new cultural trend of pop-idolizing young female and male sex workers, and 4) a host club scene in Singapore.
