Although assisting the user’s activity according to the user’s motion intention is important for the human assist robots, it is difficult to objectively determine in real time whether the assisted motion by the robot is exactly same as the intended motion by the user. In this paper, a method to objectively detect a user’s sense of assist mismatch using EEG signals is investigated. Experiments were conducted to analyze the user’s brain activities during the ankle joint movement with the assist of intended and unintended motion. The experimental results show that there are differences in the theta wave activities around the central area of the head and alpha wave activities around the central sulcus when assist mismatch occurs. These results suggest that a user’s sense of mismatch can be detected with the proposed method..

Oybek Rashidov, Kazuo Kiguchi, ZMP-Based Fall Prevention Assist for Lower-Limb Exoskeletons During Dynamic Walking, Communications in Information and Systems, 22, 4, 499-526, 2023.01, A lower-limb power-assist exoskeleton robot is a wearable device that assists persons in their daily activities. Although the main purpose of the lower-limb exoskeleton robot is to assist the intended motion of the user, the stability of the robot’s posture is still one of the biggest challenges. This paper focuses on the balance aspect of the exoskeleton robot in terms of control considering Zero Moment Point (ZMP) that is widely used in biped robots. A ZMP based fall prevention assist method, that prevents the user from falling down by giving equivalent external motion modification force to the user during dynamic walking on even terrains, is proposed in this paper. Fall prevention assist strategy is changed between a double support phase and a single support phase in the proposed method. Position of swing leg, velocity of swing leg, and change rate of ZMP are considered as an index to stabilize the posture of the exoskeleton during dynamic walking in the proposed method. In the proposed method, fuzzy control approach is applied to keep the ZMP inside the support polygon by generating the equivalent motion modification force at the chest or back of the user by the lower-limb exoskeleton for fall prevention assist during walking without making additional steps. Kanta Maemura, Satoshi Nishikawa, Kazuo Kiguchi, A Study on Artificial Kinesthesia Generation by Simultaneous Stimulation of Mechanical Vibration and Mechanical Skin Stretch, Proc. of 2022 International Conference on Rehabilitation Robotics, 2022.07, Kinesthesia is a sense used to recognize our body movements. If kinesthesia can be controlled artificially, various applications can be envisioned. It can be used to generate artificial movement sensation in rehabilitation or daily motion assist to improve self-efficacy of the robot user. Moreover, the controlled artificial kinesthesia makes people feel as if they were performing the actions of the SRL with their own limbs. Mechanical vibration stimulation is one of the candidates to artificially control kinesthesia. It is known that mechanical vibration stimulation on human muscles or tendons from skin surface evokes an illusion of movement as if the stimulated muscles are extended. That effect of artificial kinesthesia is called Kinesthetic Illusion (KI). In this paper, a method to increase the amount of KI without changing the frequency of the vibration stimulation is investigated by applying mechanical skin stretch stimulation at the same time with the mechanical vibration stimulation. The experiment was conducted by generating KI for flexion motion of the elbow joint on a horizontal plane to evaluate the proposed approach. In the experiments, three out of five subjects showed obvious increase in the amount of KI when skin stretch stimulation was applied at the same time with the mechanical vibration stimulation. The results of this study provide a first step toward artificial kinesthesia control using a wearable robotic device using the mechanical vibration stimulation..

Keiichirou Hayashida, Satoshi Nishikawa, Kazuo Kiguchi, Estimation of human intended motion and its phase for human-assist systems, Proc. of IEEE 2022 International Conference on Systems, Man, and Cybernetics, 2022.10, Human-assist robots are designed to reduce the burden on the body when lifting objects and assist the elderly, disabled, and other people with muscle weakness in their daily activities. They also avoid accidents and assist motions by recognizing what kind of motion the user is about to make. Therefore, human-assist systems need to estimate the motion intention of a user in real time. The sooner the assist robot can accurately recognize the user’s motion, the sooner the assist robot can plan which motion to assist and how to assist it to guarantee success. If the user’s intended motion and its phase are estimated in the early stage of the motion, the assist robot can figure out how the user is moving by comparing with standard motion models to assist the motion as necessary. This paper proposes a method to estimate the user's intended motion and its phase simultaneously in real time based on integrated information consisting of the user’s posture, motion, EMG signals, and the surrounding environment. Two kinds of artificial neural networks are applied in the proposed method. Damping neurons are used in the artificial neural network to estimate the motion phase effectively. The intended lower-limb motions and their phases in daily living motion are estimated in real-time. It is known that patients’ active participation in rehabilitation is important for their recovery. On the other hand, mechanical vibration stimulation to muscles induces tonic vibration reflex (TVR) and kinesthetic illusion (KI) in the joint motion. In this paper, the possibility of a novel robotic rehabilitation method, in which the TVR is applied to an agonist muscle to enhance the intended motion of patients and the KI is simultaneously applied to an antagonist muscle to enhance the kinesthetic movement sensation of the generating intended motion by changing the frequency of vibration stimulation, is investigated. As the first step toward novel robotic rehabilitation, the proposed method is evaluated in elbow joint motion. Nevertheless, there are still some limitations and challenges associated with their outcome, one of which is a lack of force feedback. Without force information, the risk of delicate tissue damage from the excessive force applied by surgeons would be increased. Since it is difficult to install force sensors on microsurgical tools, a novel approach for estimating a force vector from the deformation of the surgical tool is proposed in this paper. In the proposed approach, a surgical instrument that deforms according to the magnitude of the tool-to-tissue force is designed, and a time series convolution neural network is used to make the nonlinear relationship between the visual information of the deformation of the surgical tool and the applied forces in such a way that the tool-to-tissue force can be estimated according to the deformation of the surgical instrument in a real-time manner. The experimental results prove that the applied force can be successfully estimated with high accuracy in three dimensions using the proposed method..

WENBIN LIU, TAKERU KAI, and KAZUO KIGUCHI, Tremor Suppression with Mechanical Vibration Stimulation, IEEE Access, 10.1109/ACCESS.2020.3045023, 8, 226199-226212, 2020.12, Tremor, which is one of the most common movement disorders, is a repetitive movement that is caused by periodic muscle contraction and relaxation. To suppress tremors of upper-limb tremor patients, such as essential tremor (ET) patients, many kinds of devices have been developed. On the other hand, when mechanical vibration stimulation is applied to a human muscle, sustained muscle contraction, which is referred to as the tonic vibration reflex (TVR), is induced in the stimulated muscle. In this study, a novel tremor suppression method that utilizes the periodic TVR to induce muscle contraction/relaxation to generate the counterphase motion of the ET is proposed and applied to the forearm pronation-supination ET. In the proposed method, periodic vibration stimulation is applied to generate the periodic TVR in the pronator teres muscle and/or supinator muscle. First, the results confirmed that the TVR can be induced by applying mechanical vibration stimulation to the pronator teres muscle and supinator muscle since the forearm pronation-supination tremor is one of the key features of the ET. Furthermore, the findings also confirmed that the TVR intensity that is induced in these muscles can be adjusted by changing the vibration stimulation frequency. Second, the results show that the counterphase motion of the ET (i.e., periodic pronation-supination motion) can be generated by applying the proposed method. The effectiveness of the proposed method for tremor suppression is evaluated by comparing the generated motion with the ET motion..

In order to carry out rehabilitation training for patients, a variety of power-assist robots has been studied. On the other hand, it has been shown that a motion change induced by the reflection phenomenon and the kinesthetic illusion can be generated by stimulating the specific muscles with vibration stimulation during upper-limb movement. Artificially generating the intended motion or giving the movement sensation by adding vibration stimulation may be an alternative method to realize the rehabilitation training. Undesired involuntary periodic movements are generated in ET patients. Some devices have been developed to suppress ET movements up to the present. In this paper, Tonic Vibration Reflex (TVR) is studied to investigate the possibility to suppress ET movements. The TVR is a phenomenon of human reflex which is induced by applying mechanical vibration stimulation to a human muscle. If a counter-phase movement of the ET movement of the patient is artificially generated by the TVR, the ET movement would be canceled. In order to investigate its possibility, fundamental study on the TVR is carried out in this study. In order to confirm the possibility of generating the TVR in forearm pronation/supination, the effect of the amplitude and the range of frequency of vibration stimulation on the TVR in forearm pronation/supination is studied in this paper. The effect of forearm posture is also studied. Furthermore, the effect of the on-and-off vibration stimulation on the TVR in forearm pronation/supination is investigated. Such persons are also likely to have deteriorated perception ability, hence, it is important for power-assist robots to have perception-ability to ensure the safety of the user. Perception-assist can be accomplished by observing the interaction between the user and the environment, determining the possibility of accidents, such as falling, and preventing them by modifying the user’s motion. Therefore, in order to accomplish perception-assist, it is essential to predict the possibility of accidents in real-time. In this paper, we propose a method that uses deep learning to predict the possibility of accidents based on the user’s motion, user’s motion intention from EMG signals, zero moment point (ZMP) and information from the surrounding environment. In this study, a method to change human motion in a controlled manner using vibration stimulation is proposed for the perception-assist and applied for elbow-joint-extension motion change. Furthermore, it is elucidated that the change in the human elbow-joint-extension motion can be generated soon after the vibration stimulation is provided. Based on the characteristics of motion change with respect to vibration stimulation, the proposed method controls the change of the user's elbow-joint-extension motion by adjusting the frequency of the vibration stimulation to achieve the target motion, which is different from the user's intended motion. Manosha Chathuramali, Kazuo Kiguchi, A Study on Real-Time Detection of Interaction between an Upper-limb Power-Assist Robot User and Another person for Perception-Assist, Cognitive Systems Research, 61, 53-63, 2020.01, Assisting aged population or population with disabilities is a critical problem in today’s world. To compensate for their declined motor function, power-assist wearable robots have been proposed. In some cases, however, their cognitive function might have declined as well and compensation only for their motor function may not be sufficient. Perception-assist has been proposed to address this problem by identifying environmental information using visual sensors attached to a wearable robot. This study addresses the problem of identifying interacting motion intention of the user of an upper-limb power-assist wearable robot to perform correct interactions with others. It is important to consider both parties to accurately predict proper interaction. Therefore, this paper presents a methodology of interaction recognition by combining both user’s motion intention and the other party’s motion intention with environmental information. A fuzzy reasoning model is proposed to semantically combine both motion intentions and environmental information. In this method, the motion intentions of both the user and the other party are simultaneously estimated using kinematic information and visual information, respectively, and they are employed for the estimation of their interaction. Several kinds of control methods have been proposed to control the power-assist robots according to user’s motion intention. In this paper, an EMG-based impedance control method for an upper-limb power-assist exoskeleton robot is proposed to control the robot in accordance with the user’s motion intention. The proposed method is simple, easy to design, human-like, and adaptable to any user. A neuro-fuzzy matrix modifier is applied to make the controller adaptable to any users. Not only the characteristics of EMG signals but also the characteristics of human body are taken into account in the proposed method. The effectiveness of the proposed method was evaluated by the experiments..

The robotic exoskeleton is controlled basically based on the electromyogram (EMG) signals, since the EMG signals of human muscles are important signals to understand how the user intends to move. Even though the EMG signals contain very important information, however, it is not very easy to predict the user’s upper-limb motion (elbow and shoulder motion) based on the EMG signals in real-time because of the difficulty in using the EMG signals as the controller input signals. In this paper, we propose a robotic exoskeleton for human upper-limb motion assist, a hierarchical neuro-fuzzy controller for the robotic exoskeleton, and its adaptation method..
