活動概要
研究活動では、老齢社会学及び社会政策学を専門領域とした社会学者として、主に国際比較の枠組みに基づいた国際共同研究に従事している。1999年から2014年の間、Center for Retirement Research とGlobal Institute, Sloan Center on Aging & Workなどの老齢学に関連する米国の研究機関にて、研究主任として産学連携による多数の国際共同研究を企画及び遂行してきた。その後University of Central Missouri にて大学院教育と合わせたGerontology Instituteを新たに創設し、主にカンサス・シティー近郊の高齢者支援団体の関係者に修士レベルの教育やワークショップなどを提供した。Journal of Population Ageing やGlobal Social Policy、またJournal of Aging & Social Policyなどの国際学術誌に多数の論文を掲載。主な著書は「Retirement in Japan and South Korea: The Past, the Present, and the Future of Mandatory Retirement」(2015, Routledge)や「Ageing in Asia-Pacific: Interdisciplinary and Comparative Perspectives」(2018, Routledge)など。主な学会メンバーシップとしてInternational Association for Gerontology and GeriatricsやGerontological Society of America、また American Sociological Associationなどがある。また、九州大学では令和元年4月に発足した「九州大学アジア・オセアニア研究教育機構」に参画し、その「医療・健康クラスター」内の「エイジング・モジュール」を設立し、そのモジュール長として多数の海外研究者と連携し国際共同研究に従事している。文部科学省科学研究費助成事業において、基盤研究(A)の研究分担者および基盤研究(B)と(C)の研究代表者として支援を受けている。
教育活動では、Boston CollegeやAnderson University, またUniversity of Central Missouriなどの米国の大学機関で、社会学、社会政策学、及び老齢学を中心とする、幅広い社会科学分野の科目の授業を、学部及び大学院レベルで提供してきた。上記3つの異なる大学機関で、学生からの高度な評価および教員間評価システムの結果に基づきTeaching Excellence Awardsを受賞した。九州大学では、2014年より、本学が1993年から展開している外国人留学生受入教育プログラム「Japan in Today’s World」の主導担当教員を務めている。本学の主要な海外協定校から選抜・派遣された交換留学生を主な教育・研究指導の対象し、上記の専門分野に基づいた授業の提供や、研究指導、協定校の指導教員及び国際派遣担当者などとのコミュニケーションを通じた調整等に従事。その他、外国人留学生と日本人学生の共学を目的とした基幹教育科目の提供や、全学新入留学生オリエンテーションの総合指揮や学生指導・アドバイジングなど、広く全学の留学生指導業務にも従事している。
