8. Y. Yamazaki, Proton Trapping in fully hydrated hydrated yttrium -doped barium zirconate, The 15th International Conference on Diffusion in Solids and Liquids, 2019.06, Yttrium-doped barium zirconate shows high proton diffusivity at an intermediate temperature. Such feature is beneficial as an electrolyte for solid oxide fuel cells operated at the temperatures. Though high, the proton diffusion is hindered by trapping effect. It is an attractive interaction with relatively negatively charged dopant that reduces the fraction of mobile protons (H+), more severely at lower temperatures [1]. The effect was experimentally confirmed by electrochemical measurement combined with thermogravimetry as well as high-temperature proton NMR. The 20at% Y-doped barium zirconate sample contained about 0.05 protons and 0.075 oxygen vacancies per formula unit. Now, there is a discussion in which the existing oxygen vacancies might have an impact on the proton trapping. To investigate it, we prepared fully hydrated pellet, BaZr0.8Y0.2O2.9H0.2, that does not contain any oxygen vacancies and performed electrochemical measurements. Proton diffusivities in the partially and fully hydrated pellets are almost equivalent, both indicating proton trapping. The oxygen vacancies remained in the oxide have negligible impact on macroscopic proton diffusion, thus proton trapping..
