Outline Activities
In order to internationalize the School of Design and Graduate School of Design at Kyushu University, the International Office of Faculty of Design plans and implements initiatives such as accelerating the students' exchange, developing and concluding international exchange agreements, education in English, supporting students and researchers from outside Japan, and international joint lectures.
Primary research activities include both research and social implementation of design for public sectors in Finland and Japan. In particular, I am conducting research on parenting support services from a societal design perspective, and developing tools and methods.
On the educational side, I am focusing on activities for international exchange and cultural understanding. I am in charge of international workshops and joint lectures with overseas universities, as well as lectures introducing Design in Japan to students from overseas.

1. SHIMOMURA Moe, HIRAI Yasuyuki, KOMMONEN Kari-Hans, Design issues for parenting support services in Japanese municipalities from the users’ perspective, [ ] With Design: Reinventing Design Modes. IASDR 2021. Springer, https://doi.org/10.1007/978-981-19-4472-7_33, 493-513, 2022.11, This study aimed to clarify citizens’ issues with the current parenting support services provided by the public sector in Japan. The main objective of this study was to investigate the integration of service design methods into parenting support services. Citizen-participatory design workshops were conducted to identify and evaluate the parenting support services provided by the public sector. The design workshop results were analysed using naturalistic inquiry and classified on the basis of Stickdorn’s five principles of service design thinking. Psychological, financial, and functional issues were identified in relation to parenting support services currently provided by Japanese municipalities. First, the social structure of parenting in Japan currently causes isolation among mothers as a result of physical and psychological burdens. Mothers often do not know where or how to ask for help regarding childrearing. Thus, it is important that people are aware of the services that are available for parenting support. It is also necessary to design these services so that people can learn about, choose, and access them. Second, it is necessary to investigate how much financial support is needed in more detail, as well as elucidating when, or whether, the needs of users can be better met through means other than financial support. Third, a failure of digital transformation is a cause of difficulty in understanding available parenting support services for guardians. Finally, the results suggested that guardians often lack co-creative partners and holistic perspectives on parenting support services..

  • Parenting Public Service Design, Fukutsu City Kodomo no Kuni: Children’s Services Map, Child-rearing Support Guidebook, Child-rearing Support App, and website
Fukutsu City, Fukuoka Prefecture, which promotes parenting service, has created "Fukutsu City Kodomo no Kuni," an easy-to-understand public service structure for citizens through co-creation with citizens and a university. The city has designed an integrated system from a citizen's perspective, including a "Children’s Services Map" that provides an overall picture, a "Child-rearing Support Guidebook" that provides detailed information, and a "Child-rearing Support App" that links the city website with an easy-to-access for parents.
  • The Parenting Service Map is a tool for guardians who are raising children for the first time. There are many things they don't know when they are pregnant or raising a child for the first time. There are many public services available, but users do not know how to act on them. Therefore, Kyushu University, Aalto University, and Fukutsu City collaborated with citizens to design the citizen friendly Parenting Service Map.

Other Educational Activities
  • 2023.04, In charge of the International Program of the School of Design Kyushu University. 10 students were selected and registered for the program in FY2023 after a rigorous screening process. Instruction of the four courses designated for the international program, exchange support, and English language instruction were provided to students..
  • 2022.09, Mentored as a submentor to a multinational team of students at APRU SDG Education for Global Citizenship. Program was conducted online from September 2022 to March 2023.
The APRU SDG4GC is an intercultural, transdisciplinary and interactive program that fosters global citizenship among students from 60 universities in 19 economies across the Pacific Rim. Co-designed by six core-partner universities in collaboration with the United Nations (UN), the program builds knowledge of global issues and global literacy among students. This is achieved through learning about the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), exploring in-depth some of the world’s biggest challenges, and proposing solutions using a framework for collaborative development of social innovation prototypes. The program places critical importance in introducing locally embedded unique case studies among the network members to help students develop a broad array of perspectives and deepen understandings of the SDGs..
