Magnetospheric Physics, Space and Earth Electromagnetism, Solar-Terrestrial Physics

I have been working at Kyushu University since January 1, 1998. In and before 1997, I worked at the Solar-Terrestrial Environment Laboratory, Nagoya University (as a COE researcher), UCLA (under a JSPS postdoctoral fellowships for Research Abroad), and the University of Tokyo (under a JSPS fellowship for Junior Scientists), in a retrospective order. At these previous working places, I worked on the data from a Japanese satellite GEOTAIL and US satellites POLAR, AMPTE/CCE, ISEE, and IMP, and studied the Earth's magnetosphere: The research topics include the magnetopause shape and its deformation, transient-reconnection events called "flux transfer events" observed near the magnetopause, magnetosphere's response to sudden changes in the solar wind pressure, magnetospheric substorms, and plasmoids in the magnetotail. The results of these studies have been published. I have also been continuing some of these subjects that wait for further developments.
At Kyushu University I have been involved in the researches of seniors in the undergraduate course and of graduate students, as their supervisor. Their researches use data from MAGDAS/CPMN (MAGnetic Data Acquisition System/Circum-pan Pacific Magnetometer Network), which is mainly run by the laboratory I belong to and by the Space Environment Research Center, Kyushu University. I myself have also been working on how to remote-sense the magnetospheric plasma density by using the MAGDAS/CPMN data and SuperDARN-radar data of field-line-resonance phenomena.
At Kyushu University I have also been involved in the undergraduate- and graduate-course education: As stated above, I have been acting as a supervisor of the researches of seniors and graduate students of Kyushu University. In addition, I have undergraduate and graduate classes to teach, as stated below.

Research Interests

• Magnetospheric plasma density estimation by using ground magnetometer data, and integration of the results with different kinds of plasma density data

  2003.12I plan to remote-sense the magnetospheric plasma density from the ground as a function of position and time, by using the ground-magnetometer observations of the field-line resonance phenomena. I also plan to establish a method to assimilate the above results with other observations (e.g., TEC, plasmaspheric-imager data) and obtain a high-resolution global plasma-density map..
