    This research seeks to identify and investigate major trends in mountain worship in Japan over the last century through a cross-disciplinary and multi-sited approach. The project intergrates five fields in the humanities: religious studies, tourism studies, history, gender studies, and anthropology. Ultimately, the results from this cross-disciplinary approach seek to 1) reposition the field of Shugendō and Japanese religions alongside adjacent fields of research, and 2) resituate the study of mountain worship within a dynamic field of social and economic issues relevant to public use of national parks, regional tourism and heritage development projects, and gender imbalances that span Japan’s modern past and its contemporary present.
