    This paper presents a novel methodology for land-use pattern comparison with the application of image smoothing algorithms and histogram similarity. This method measures the degree of similarity between land-use patterns with integrative consideration of the composition and the spatial relationship of land-use units. This paper verified the effectiveness of the proposed method through experiments of the land-use pattern comparison with simulated land-use maps, demonstrated the applicability of the method in urban studies by a sample application of this method to the land-use pattern comparison of 6 Shinkansen station areas, and clarified the limitations of this method.

    To find out how Xiang Yue, a book of fortification technology, affected the construction of walled-villages in the Xuanfu and Datang Garrisons of the Ming China, related historical documents and nearly 1000 preserved villages were investigated. The result shows that the layout evolvement underwent an integration of formal and informal patterns. Xiang Yue was trying to build up a new formal model for small-sized fortresses that is compatible with informal patterns. For villages, its influence is limited as an idealized model, yet the stress on the defense tower had a wide range of impacts.

    Traditional vernacular dwellings need to undergo inevitable renovations to adapt to modern lifestyles. In the Inner Mongolia section of China's Yellow River basin, earth dwellings are a kind of vernacular dwellings. Over different periods, these vernacular dwellings have been updated. The research selected seven samples based on different construction years, construction methods, and infrastructure provisions. Firstly, the research organizes the samples' courtyards and living space forms for qualitative analysis. Subsequently, using spatial syntax, the integration values of the plans and functional spaces of each sample are calculated to analyze the organizational characteristics of the plans quantitatively. The results indicate that the involvement of builders with different identities affects the spatial form of residential spaces. The infrastructure configuration influences the content and usage of functional spaces. The renovated residences retain the traditional Kang-Stove space but adjust the spatial connections, making the updated plan organization more compact.

    Landscape paintings provide an abundant and objective representation of good and distinctive local scenery, which is widely used in local landscape analysis, so the comprehensive research of landscape paintings is fundamental and necessary for the subsequent landscape planning work. Landscape paintings include both planar information and spatial information. However, there has been little previous work on landscape paintings from both a three-dimensional and planar perspective, and the landscape features of landscape paintings have not yet been comprehensively clarified. Therefore, this paper, taking the Seto Inland Sea area as a case study, aims to comprehensively clarify the landscape features of the paintings and provide a valuable index of “good and characteristic landscapes” in this area based on the two planar features of element configuration and color, along with one spatial feature (element arrangement). To deeply clarify the typical landscape features of paintings, we attempt to propose a classification method by combining the similarity of features in different attributions. The results indicate that Sky, Green, and Sea are the most essential landscape elements, and yellow (orange), blue, and green hues are the most used in the paintings. In addition, the paintings were classified into eight typical landscapes, and seascape and field landscapes were the most significant presented in the landscape paintings in this area. This study presents a method to clarify the landscape features from both planar and spatial perspectives, providing more comprehensive guidance and data support for the subsequent landscape planning work and analysis—especially in regional landscape exploration—and for the development of tourism landscape resources in urban planning.

    <p>This paper aims to clarify the landscape characteristic and propose the utilization method based on the 90 landscape paintings of the coastal area of Seto Inland Sea. By analyzing the landscape elements depicted in landscape painting and the viewpoint in which the painting painted, the landscape characteristics were clarified. Through PCoA analysis and cluster analysis, 90 landscape paintings were classified into six landscape groups and the significant characteristics of each group were summarized into the landscape index of this area. From a case study, we proposed a utilization method of landscape index in urban planning on viewpoint exploration.</p>

  • An Equity Evaluation on Accessibility of Primary Healthcare Facilities by Using V2SFCA Method: Taking Fukuoka City, Japan, as a Case Study

    The primary healthcare facilities are among the most basic needs of the residents, huge in quantity and widespread. Their distributions are directly related to people’s health, which affects the sustainable development of cities. The accessibility calculation of primary level healthcare facilities and the equity evaluation of accessibility from the perspective of medical service category and urban population is very important for the decision-making of layout and configuration but has been ignored for a long time. This study took the primary healthcare facilities of Fukuoka city in Japan as research objects; it first used the variable two-step floating catchment area (V2SFCA) method to calculate the healthcare catchment areas (HCAs) of medical service providers and the population catchment area (PCAs) of medical demand locations, and then obtained the accessibility to primary healthcare facilities. Finally, the spatial disparities of accessibility were evaluated from three aspects: overall space distribution by using Global and Local Moran’s I, service quality, and the population to be served. The results showed that HCAs were from 500 m to 6400 m, PCAs ranged from 500 m to 3000 m, the use of variable catchments can improve the accuracy of accessibility assessment results; the accessibility of primary healthcare facilities was clustered and had significant spatial differences, which were high in urban center and low in suburban area; the obvious differences in the accessibility distribution characteristics of clinics in differential diagnosis and treatment departments led to different degrees of unsaturation in the types of medical services obtained by residents; although the elderly’s demand for basic medical care was many times higher than that of other age groups, the accessibility in high-demand areas was generally low, and the situation in severely high-demand areas was more serious. This work puts forward a multi-dimensional realistic evaluation system for equality accessibility of primary healthcare facilities, providing the data support for the medical resources and facilities’ allocation and the intensive land use.

  • Efficiency Evaluation and Influence Factor Analysis of Medical Malls

    <p>At present, Japan is facing the problem of increasing medical demands caused by an aging society. The imbalance between supply and demand makes the efficiency of medical services particularly important. In this context, a new medical facility, medical malls, has emerged in recent years. Different from independent clinics, the medical mall is a facility that integrates multiple medical functions and provides multi-disciplinary treatments for patients. In order to verify the effectiveness of this new medical facility and explore its relationship with the urban environment, this paper first identifies the medical malls in Fukuoka City and studies their characteristics, then the SBM model was used to calculate the medical efficiency of the clinics in the 75 medical malls, compared with the independent clinics. Finally, the research analysed the spatial distribution of the medical mall efficiency and the spatial regression with the surrounding urban environment. The results show that the medical mall is a more efficient facility, and population density of the young and the working-aged, the number of main roads, total construction area, the proportion of residence and commerce, and the number of the other medical facilities have significant impacts on the medical efficiency. This research proposes a method to evaluate the effectiveness of utilization of medical resources. Through the evaluation of medical efficiency and the analysis of the urban environment affecting efficiency, this paper provides data support for the site selection of medical malls and the rational layout of urban medical facilities.</p>

    <p>This paper presents a novel methodology for land-use pattern comparison with the application of image smoothing algorithms and histogram similarity. This method measures the degree of similarity between land-use patterns with integrative consideration of the composition and the spatial relationship of land-use units. This paper verified the effectiveness of the proposed method through experiments of the land-use pattern comparison with simulated land-use maps, demonstrated the applicability of the method in urban studies by a sample application of this method to the land-use pattern comparison of 6 Shinkansen station areas, and clarified the limitations of this method.</p>

    In concern of the continuous expanding Shinkansen network and the unprecedented nationwide depopulation in Japan, this study systematically summarized the current land development situation around 91 existing Shinkansen high-speed railway stations. Specifically, with the land-use pattern comparison method based on image matching algorithms, this study compared the land-use situation between 91 existing Shinkansen station areas, classified the land-use patterns into 6 types, and clarified the features of each group. Besides, this study compared the land-use situation of 91 station areas between 2009 and 2016, thus identifying the transformation situation of Shinkansen station areas and elucidating the location trend of the land-use changes.

    This study predicts the emergence state, date, time period and function of urban hotspots and also compares the performance of different data sources (numerical data, digital map vector data, remote sensing raster map data) combined with different algorithms (regression model, random forest and convolution neural network) in urban hotspot prediction. The results illustrate that the combinations of different data sources and algorithms have different prediction accuracy in various scenarios. This study provides guidance for urban hotspot prediction under different scenarios and objectives.

    The urbanization process in China is quite unique. To understand it well and make more reasonable plans for future, enough researches about the process is necessary. In this paper we apply Multivariate Analysis Method to classify 199 Chinese cities and their core areas into 8 groups based on their changes during 1990-2015 from the perspective of urbanization. Then we conclude 5 main development patterns based on the result of classification, compare the patterns between cities and core areas. The classification and comparison could reveal the effect of urban areas during the urbanization process and provide references to review and adjust their development goals and strategies.

    &nbsp;In Japan's regional cities, due to a decline in agriculture and the development of motorization, the urban sprawl phenomenon has become an issue. The declining population and growing proportion of elderly people have created a demand for compact urban structures as a form of effective financial investment. These circumstances have also led to the integration of medical and retail facilities and residences. An increased number of local governments are planning compact urban developments that allow access through public transportation to services necessary for daily life. &nbsp;Meanwhile, the American city of Portland, Oregon, which is well-known as a sustainable city, is advancing compact city policies. As its characteristic policy, Portland is attempting to establish &ldquo;20-Minute Neighborhoods.&rdquo; It's implementing urban planning while controlling regional city structures to make compact cities a reality. &nbsp;This study demonstrates and visualizes a future urban structure model by constructing an expert system that incorporates this concept and applies it to the regional city of Ube in Japan's Yamaguchi Prefecture. It also assesses this model and considers processes for moving populations. Based on these findings, we aim to propose new ways to support compact city planning. &nbsp;In this study, the target area is Ube city as the target city for this simulation modelled on Portland's compact city planning. First, this study examines Portland's population trends and land use transitions and analyzes the urban structure of Ube city. Next, the study samples aspects of Portland's compact city administrative planning and configurations for &ldquo;20-Minute Neighborhoods&rdquo;, preparing a &ldquo;knowledge base.&rdquo; The &ldquo;knowledge base&rdquo;, is used to create &ldquo;rules for population integration&rdquo; to migrate future population. Then, we develop a system for constructing the Portland Compact City Model (hereinafter referred to as the &ldquo;PCM&rdquo;) in accordance with indicators arbitrarily set by users, based on the rules for population integration. The GIS data used for Ube City has been organized into 100meter mesh data. Finally, future urban structures are considered by assessing the compactness of the PCM and discussing the process that could be used to move populations and make the PCM a reality. &nbsp;This study reaches the following conclusions. &nbsp;(1) First, based on the Portland City administration's concept of a &ldquo;20-Minute Neighborhoods,&rdquo; we identified areas corresponding to a complete neighborhood by calculating the walkable value of Ube City. &nbsp;(2) We developed an expert system that incorporates the planning policy of Portland's compact city, examined a future urban structure by constructing an urban structure model. &nbsp;(3) In the future urban structure model, the population is concentrated mainly around a central urban area. In addition, the population living within walking distance of urban and commercial service facilities has increased and the convenience of life improved. &nbsp;(4) When all of the population is concentrated in a complete neighborhood with high residential environment, it will be a very high-density urban structure for a city the size of Ube City. To migrate the population in stages, we created a standardization index and examined the mesh with high population movement priority.

    There are a lot of old condominium buildings needing reconstruction because of the weakness in earthquake resisting and decaying equipment. Reconstruction condominium buildings is di出cult because of the difficulty of getting consent for reconstruction, complex property rights, and the cost. In this study, the possibility of reconstruction condominium buildings is examined using the case of Fukuoka City from the perspective of costs. The reconstruction was simulated by calculating the costs of reconstruction by System of Proportional Shares method with the data of condominium buildings in Fukuoka City (provided by Fukuoka City Housing Authority), and the land price and unit construction cost. The main work of this study can be divided into 3 parts; 1. comparing the difference of rate of reduction between Fukuoka and Tokyo; 2. calculating the variation in the rate of reduction after reconstructing the building based on the integrated design system; 3. examining the difficulty in conducting reconstruction in Fukuoka City.

    &nbsp;This research offers insights into the spatial composition of traditional commercial streets through a deep investigation from the point of view of pedestrians. First, we conducted typological studies among all the streets based on data from field investigations. Then, we selected typical spaces according to the classification results to clarify their dynamic relations with the social activities and physical environment. Furthermore, this research illuminated potential issues implicated in the forms of spaces with consideration to the needs of pedestrians. Based on these findings, we offer adaptable urban design guidelines to support the sustainable regeneration of the traditional commercial urban streets.

    This paper is a report on compositional characteristics of the rivers and urban landscapes painted by Bernardo Bellotto. As a method for this study, the author made a comparison between the paintings by Bellotto and the real views based on the field survey. The results of the analysis are as follows: 1) Bellotto painted the riverside views both from upstream side and from downstream side. 2) He chose viewpoint, either toward the opposite bank or toward the stream, depending on the width of the river. 3) The significant facilities and architectures in the areas, including the bridges with novel design, were painted multiple times from different viewpoints.

    The implementation of sustainable development has been given priority to economic and environmental sustainability, social aspect tends to be neglected. Whereas many cities experiencing lack of social cohesion, weaken sense of place, history and cultural distinctiveness which refers to social sustainability issues as one of globalization impacts. In line with these, our study aimed to explore the practice of social sustainability in public spaces through festival. Yamakasa Gion Festival in Fukuoka, Japan was selected as our case study. There are three main lessons from Yamakasa Gion Festival: (1) Provide access and opportunity to discover, experience and learn more about traditional culture as a social resource; (2) Enhance sense of place belonging, strengthen social cohesion and raise quality of life; (3) Establish active participation of local community. Additionally, in overall visitor perceived satisfaction on the accessibility to festival space as well as satisfaction on urban amenities at festival space except the lack number of temporary seating space.

    This research is aimed at clarifying the visual characteristics of street space in Japanese traditional island village. Through analyzing the visible area of different types of street in island village, this research quantitatively extracted the characteristics of distribution and variation of the visual area along the street. The conclusions obtained in this research are as follows; 1. The visible area size is not only concerned with the shape of the street, but also depended on the elements of road space. 2. According to the difference of industrial form in island village, the diversity and variation of visible area distribution are also different. 3. Through investigating the element of street space, the correlation of each element and visual characteristics in visible area is quantitatively clarified
