地表で観測される地震動は，震源の特性，震源から地震基盤に至るまでの伝播経路の特性，地震基盤から地表に至るまでの堆積層におけるサイト特性であらわされます．日本の都市の多くは，地震動の影響を受けやすい，厚い堆積平野・盆地上に広がっており，過去にも大きな地震被害が生じています．地震に対する建物の耐震性能を評価するためには，これらの特性を適切に評価する必要があります．災害に強い社会を目指して，観測された地震記録の解析から，主に都市が位置する堆積平野・盆地の地下構造モデルの高精度化，強震動予測手法の高度化に関する研究に取り組んでいます．
