Conduction electrons in ferromagnets are spin polarized because of their spin-dependent conductivity. When an electric field is applied in a ferromagnet, the spin current, which is a flow of spin angular momentum, is generated in addition to the charge current. The spin current normally appears in ferromagnets. However, by using a ferromagnetic/nonmagnetic junction or the spin-orbit interaction, the spin current can be generated also in nonmagnets. Spin-dependent transport phenomenon such as giant magnetoresistance (GMR) and spin Hall effect transform from the spin current (spin information of conduction electrons) into the charge current (electrical information) and vice versa. Moreover, the injection of the spin current into another ferromagnet transfers the spin angular momentum, resulting in the magnetization reversal of the ferromagnet. Thus, spin currents are very attractive both from a fundamental and a technological point of view. Therefore, the efficient manipulation of spin current is a key ingredient for future spintronic devices. The spin current is usually superimposed on the charge current. However, the pure spin current, which does not include charge currents, can be generated by extracting only electric charges from the electron flow. We mainly focus on the innovation of novel spintronic devices by using generation, propagation, mixing and detection techniques of the spin currents, which have been established by us. Moreover, we are also interested in novel transport phenomenon related to pure spin currents.

    Crystal orientation effect on spin injection/detection efficiency in Si lateral spin-valve device
    We show evident crystal orientation effect on pure spin current transport in Si-based lateral spin-valve (LSV) devices with epitaxially grown CoFe/MgO tunnel contacts. When we compare nonlocal spin signals between LSV devices along < 1 0 0 > (Si < 1 0 0 >) and < 1 1 0 > (Si < 1 1 0 >), we find that the magnitude of the spin signals for Si < 100 > LSV devices is always larger than that for Si < 1 1 0 > LSV devices. The analyses based on the one-dimensional spin diffusion model reveal that the spin diffusion length and spin lifetime between Si < 1 0 0 > and Si < 1 1 0 > LSV devices are comparable, while the spin injection/detection efficiency in Si < 1 0 0 > LSV devices is evidently larger than that in Si < 1 1 0 > ones. Possible origins of the difference in the spin injection/detection efficiency between Si < 1 0 0 > and Si < 1 1 0 > LSV devices are discussed.

    Laterally nanostructured ferromagnetic / nonmagnetic hybrid multi-terminal devices are potential spintronic devices, and allow detailed study of the spin accumulation in non-magnetic layers. We investigate the dependence of the spin signal in the non-local spinvalve configuration on the width of the Cu strip and the influence of an additional Permalloy ohmic contact on the spin signal in lateral spin-valve structures consisting of Py/Cu ohmic junctions. We also report the non-local Hall resistance measurements, which reflect the spin current in the non-magnetic layer.

    We describe the detailed design of a highly sensitive magnetometer based on micro-magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE) magnetometry, consisting of an optical microscope combined with an ordinary MOKE set-up. The system enables microscopic MOKE hysteresis loops to be measured with a spatial resolution 10^4 times better than that of conventional longitudinal MOKE magnetometry. The sensitivity of the system is demonstrated by measuring MOKE hysteresis curves of submicron permalloy rectangular dots and wires.

    Control of vortex chirality in regular polygonal nanomagnets using in-plane magnetic field
    The authors have proposed a control method of the magnetic vortex chirality in regular polygonal nanomagnets with an odd number of sides. The asymmetric nucleation energy of the vortex from the uniformly magnetized state enables us to simply control the vortex chirality by an in-plane magnetic field. The reliability of the proposed method has been numerically and experimentally confirmed in the triangle, pentagonal, heptagonal, and nonagonal Permalloy nanomagnets. The authors also confirmed that the vortex chirality is uncontrollable when the number of the side is even. © 2010 American Institute of Physics.
