We report the mass measurements of neutron-rich isotopes produced via spontaneous fission of Cf252 using a multireflection time-of-flight mass spectrograph. The mass of Ce155 is determined experimentally for the first time. A discrepancy between the experimental and literature values was found for the mass of Sb127, which was previously deduced through indirect measurements. In comparison with several theoretical predictions, both the values and the trend of the mass excesses of Ce152-155 cannot be consistently explained. The wide-range and simultaneous mass measurements of the multireflection time-of-flight mass spectrograph enable us to crosscheck the existing mass data, and the conflict between the measured time-of-flight ratio and the extracted mass would imply the necessity of re-examining them.

Properties such as lifetimes and masses of neutron-rich nuclei are key parameters for elucidating the astrophysical rapid neutron capture process (r-process). Due to the lack of experimental nuclear data in the relevant extremely neutron-rich region, especially near and above N = 126, the predictions of theoretical nuclear models are crucial for simulating r-process nucleosynthesis. Experimental studies of the properties and structures of neutron-rich nuclei from near the β stability line up to the r-process path provide important inputs to these theoretical models, improving the accuracy of predictions for the nuclear properties involved in the rprocess. We are developing the KEK Isotope Separation System (KISS) at the RIKEN RIBF facility to produce and separate these nuclei to perform spectroscopy experiments. The nuclei of interest are produced by multinucleon transfer reactions, which have been recently attracting renewed interest as they provide a way to access neutron-rich nuclei that are difficult to produce by other methods such as complete fusion or fragmentation. We have performed nuclear and laser spectroscopy, lifetime and mass measurements of neutron-rich nuclei of refractory elements near the N = 126 region using 198,natPt, natTa, natW, and natIr targets irradiated with 136Xe beams. We also extend our spectroscopic studies into the neutron-rich actinide region using 238U beams. This paper introduces the KISS facility and provides an overview of the nuclear spectroscopy experiments carried out there. We also introduce the KISS-1.5 project, which was started in FY2024 to further extend the research into the neutron-rich region.

Atomic masses of the neutron-rich isotopes Ga83,84, Ge82-86, As82-89, Se82,84-91, Br85,86,89-92, Kr89,91,92, and Rb91 have been measured with high precision and accuracy using the multi-reflection time-of-flight mass spectrograph at the RIBF facility. The masses of As88,89 were measured for the first time and the mass uncertainties of Ge86 and Se90,91 were significantly reduced from several hundred keV to below the 10 keV scale. Investigation of shell evolution and potential subshell closures are proceeded by analysis of two-neutron separation energy systematics. As a result of the precise mass measurements, no prominent change on the slope of the two-neutron separation energy beyond N=56 is observed in Se isotopes, indicating the subshell closure effect at N=56 of Se does not exist. Also, various leading mass models are compared with the measurements. The impact of the more precisely known data on r-process nucleosynthesis calculations is investigated in light of these new mass measurements, showing a remarkable reduction of reaction-rate uncertainties.

The atomic masses of isotopes of elements beyond fermium, which can presently only be produced online via fusion-evaporation reactions, have until recently been determined only from α decay chains reaching nuclides with known atomic masses. Especially in the case of lower-yield nuclides, for which the sufficiently detailed nuclear spectroscopy required to fully determine the nuclear structure is not possible, such indirect mass determinations may suffer systematic errors. For many superheavy nuclides, their decay chains end in spontaneous fission or in β-decay prior to reaching nuclides of known mass. To address this dearth of accurate atomic masses, we have developed a multi-reflection time-of-flight mass spectrograph that can make use of decay-correlations to accurately and precisely determine atomic masses for the very low-yield superheavy nuclides.

    Abstract

Previously, we developed an α-TOF detector for correlated measurements of atomic masses and decay properties of radioactive isotopes using a multi-reflection time-of-flight mass spectrograph, and successfully demonstrated α-decay-correlated mass measurements of heavy and superheavy nuclides. In this work, we develop a β-TOF detector, an improvement upon the α-TOF detector, to extend this technology to β-decaying nuclides. Online commissioning with 81Ga yielded a measured half-life of 1.44(31) s, in agreement with the previous literature, and confirmed the efficiency of detecting a decay-correlated event to be consistent with the solid angle limitation.

The atomic masses of Sc55, Ti56,58, and V56-59 have been determined using the high-precision multireflection time-of-flight technique. The radioisotopes have been produced at RIKEN's Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory (RIBF) and delivered to the novel designed gas cell and multireflection system, which has been recently commissioned downstream of the ZeroDegree spectrometer following the BigRIPS separator. For Ti56,58 and V56-59, the mass uncertainties have been reduced down to the order of 10 keV, shedding new light on the N=34 shell effect in Ti and V isotopes by the first high-precision mass measurements of the critical species Ti58 and V59. With the new precision achieved, we reveal the nonexistence of the N=34 empirical two-neutron shell gaps for Ti and V, and the enhanced energy gap above the occupied νp3/2 orbit is identified as a feature unique to Ca. We perform new Monte Carlo shell model calculations including the νd5/2 and νg9/2 orbits and compare the results with conventional shell model calculations, which exclude the νg9/2 and the νd5/2 orbits. The comparison indicates that the shell gap reduction in Ti is related to a partial occupation of the higher orbitals for the outer two valence neutrons at N=34.

The quasielastic barrier distribution of V-51+ Cm-248 was extracted by measuring the excitation function of quasielastic backscattering using a gas-filled recoil ion separator, GARIS-III. The obtained barrier distribution is well explained by the coupled-channels calculation, indicating a significant effect of the rotational excitation of deformed Cm-248. From the measured average Coulomb barrier height and deformation parameters of Cm-248, the side-collision energy leading to a compact configuration of colliding nuclei was obtained. The relation between the side collision energy and the excitation function of the evaporation-residue cross sections in the Ca-48+(CM)-C-248 system was evaluated as a reference for the V-51+ Cm-248 case. The optimal reaction energy to synthesize a new element 119 at the V-51+ Cm-248 fusion reaction (3n and 4n channels) was estimated with an aid of these experimental data.

Beta-decay spectroscopy of the Ta187 ground state was performed at the KEK Isotope Separation System. β-delayed γ rays corresponding to the previously reported in-beam transitions were observed. The β-decay half-life of the Ta187 ground state was determined to be 283(10) s by analyzing a time spectrum of β-γ coincidence events. The β-decay branching ratio and log(ft) values were evaluated for the first time. Based on the newly evaluated log(ft) values of >6.0 and a decay scheme, spin-parity values of Iπ=7/2+ originating from the odd-proton orbit π7/2[404] were assigned with high confidence, which is consistent with the systematics of neighboring odd-A nuclides.

The atomic masses of the isotopes have been measured via decay-correlated mass spectroscopy using a multireflection time-of-flight mass spectrograph equipped with an -TOF detector. The Ra isotopes were produced as fusion-evaporation products in the reaction system and delivered by the gas-filled recoil ion separator GARIS-II at RIKEN. The -TOF detector provides for high-accuracy mass measurements by correlating time-of-flight signals with subsequent -decay events. The masses of and were directly measured using a multireflection time-of-flight mass spectrograph equipped with an -TOF detector. The mass excesses of and the excitation energy of were determined to be , and keV, respectively. The -decay branching ratio of , was directly determined from decay-correlated time-of-flight signals, and the reduced width of was calculated to be keV from the branching ratio. The spin-parity of was confirmed to be from decay correlated mass measurement results.

We have developed a novel detector, referred to as an "alpha-TOF detector", for correlated measurements of atomic masses and decay properties of low-yield, short-lived radioactive isotopes using a multi-reflection time-of-flight mass spectrograph. By correlating measured time-of-flight signals with decay events, it will be possible to suppress background events and obtain accurate, high-precision mass and half-life values even in cases of very low event rates. An offline test of the alpha-TOF detector has shown that the time-of-flight detection efficiency for 5.48 MeV alpha-rays is more than 90% and yields a time resolution of 250.6(68) ps and an alpha-energy resolution of 141.1(9) keV. Using a two-dimensional spectrum of the correlated alpha-ray energy and time-of-flight, the alpha-rays from mixed alpha sources could be resolved. Subsequent testing using alpha-emitting nuclei extracted offline from a gas cell provide verification of the alpha-ray based characterization.
