    Charged Lepton Flavor Violation is expected to be one of the most powerful tools to reveal physics beyond the Standard Model. The COMET experiment aims to search for the neutrinoless coherent transition of a muon into an electron in the field of a nucleus. Muon-to-electron conversion has never been observed, and can be, and would be, clear evidence of new physics if discovered. The experimental sensitivity of this process, defined as the ratio of the muon-to-electron conversion rate to the total muon capture rate, is expected to be significantly improved by a factor of 100 to 10,000 in the coming decade. The COMET experiment will take place at J-PARC with single event sensitivities of the orders of 10−15 and 10−17 in Phase-I and Phase-II, respectively. The ambitious goal of the COMET experiment is achieved by realizing a high-quality pulsed beam and an unprecedentedly powerful muon source together with an excellent detector apparatus that can tolerate a severe radiation environment. The construction of a new beam line, superconducting magnets, detectors and electronics is in progress towards the forthcoming Phase-I experiment. We present the experimental methods, sensitivity and backgrounds along with recent status and prospects.

    <title>Abstract</title>
    The Technical Design for the COMET Phase-I experiment is presented in this paper. COMET is an experiment at J-PARC, Japan, which will search for neutrinoless conversion of muons into electrons in the field of an aluminum nucleus (&#36;mu&#36;–&#36;e&#36; conversion, &#36;mu^{-}N
    ightarrow e^{-}N&#36;); a lepton flavor-violating process. The experimental sensitivity goal for this process in the Phase-I experiment is &#36;3.1 imes10^{-15}&#36;, or 90&#37; upper limit of a branching ratio of &#36;7 imes 10^{-15}&#36;, which is a factor of 100 improvement over the existing limit. The expected number of background events is 0.032. To achieve the target sensitivity and background level, the 3.2 kW 8 GeV proton beam from J-PARC will be used. Two types of detectors, CyDet and StrECAL, will be used for detecting the &#36;mu&#36;–&#36;e&#36; conversion events, and for measuring the beam-related background events in view of the Phase-II experiment, respectively. Results from simulation on signal and background estimations are also described.

    A double- hypernucleus, , was observed by the J-PARC E07 Collaboration in nuclear emulsions tagged by the () reaction. This event was interpreted as the production and decay of , , or via capture in . By assuming capture in the atomic 3D state, the binding energies of two hyperons () of these double- hypernuclei are obtained to be , , and , respectively. Based on the kinematic fitting, is the most likely explanation for the observed event.

    We searched for the bound state of the neutron-rich Lambda-hypernucleus H-6(Lambda), using the Li-6(pi(-), K+)X double charge-exchange reaction at a pi-beam momentum of 1.2 GeV/c at J-PARC. A total of 1.4 x 10(12) pi(-) was driven onto a Li-6 target of 3.5-g/cm(2) thickness. No event was observed below the bound threshold, i.e., the mass of H-4(Lambda) + 2n, in the missing-mass spectrum of the Li-6(pi(-), K+) X reaction in the 2 degrees < theta(pi K) < 20 degrees angular range. Furthermore, no event was found up to 2.8 MeV/c(2) above the bound threshold. We obtained the double-differential cross section spectra of the Li-6(pi(-), K+)X reaction in the angular range of 2 degrees < theta(pi K) < 14 degrees. An upper limit of 0.56 nb/sr (90&#37; C.L.) was obtained for the production cross section of the H-6(Lambda) hypernucleus bound state. In addition, not only the bound state region, but also the Lambda continuum region and part of the Sigma(-) quasifree production region of the Li-6(pi(-), K+) reaction were obtained with high statistics. The present missing-mass spectrum will facilitate the investigation of the Sigma(-) -nucleus optical potential for Sigma(-) -He-5 through spectrum shape analysis.

    We have carried out an experiment to search for a neutron-rich hypernucleus, by the 6(Lambda)H by the 6Li(pi(-), K+) reaction at p(pi)- = 1.2 GeV/c. The obtained missing-mass spectrum with an estimated energy resolution of 3.2 MeV (FWHM) showed no peak structure corresponding to the 6(Lambda)H hypernucleus neither below nor above the 4(Lambda)H+2n particle decay threshold. An upper limit of th production cross section for the bound 6(Lambda)H hypernucleus was estimated to be 1.2 nb/sr at 90&#37; confidence level. (c) 2014 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V.     We have been searching for the Theta(+) pentaquark via the pi(-) p -> K- X reaction at the J-PARC hadron facility. No peak structure was observed in the missing mass spectrum obtained at 1.92 GeV/c beam momentum. The upper limit for the production cross section averaged over the scattering angle from 2 degrees to 15 degrees in the laboratory frame was derived to be 0.26 mu b/sr. In order to make a more stringent constraint we have also performed a measurement at 2.0 GeV/c. Present analysis status of this new data is reported. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

    A novel experiment, aiming at demonstrating the feasibility of hypernuclear spectroscopy with heavy ion beams, was conducted. Using the invariant mass method, the spectroscopy of hypernuclear products of Li-6 projectiles on a carbon target at 2 A GeV was performed. Signals of the Lambda-hyperon and H-3(Lambda) and H-4(Lambda) hypernuclei were observed for final states of p + pi(-), He-3 + pi(-) and He-4 + pi(-), respectively, with significance values of 6.7, 4.7 and 4.9 sigma. By analyzing the proper decay time from secondary vertex distribution with the unbinned maximum likelihood fitting method, their lifetime values were deduced to be 262(-43)(+56) +/- 45 ps for Lambda, 183(-32)(+42) +/- 37 ps for H-3(Lambda), and 140(-33)(+48) +/- 35 ps for H-4(Lambda).     The first experiment at the J-PARC hadron facility, the J-PARC E19 experiment, aims at searching for the I similar to (+) pentaquark in the hadronic reaction pi (-) p -> K (-) X using the missing-mass technique. Based on a superconducting magnet excited at 2.5 T, the spectrometer achieved the high mass resolution of 1.4 MeV/c(2) for the I similar to (+) production process. The first data taking was performed in the autumn of 2010. No significant structure was observed in the missing-mass spectrum. The upper limit obtained for the differential cross section is 0.26 mu b/sr in the laboratory frame at a 90 &#37; CL.

    In the J-PARC E27 experiment, we search for a K (-) pp bound state via the d(pi (+), K (+)) reaction at 1.7 GeV/c at the K1.8 beam line. The binding energy and decay width of the K (-) pp bound state can be obtained in the missing mass measurement with a good energy resolution of 2 MeV/c (2). A range counter array (RCA) was constructed to detect the two high-momentum protons from the K (-) pp decay and to reduce the background such as quasi-free hyperon production. Recently, we have carried out a pilot run in June, 2012. The d(pi (+), K (+)) missing-mass spectrum has been obtained for the first time. In this report, an overview of the E27 experiment and a preliminary result on this pilot run are presented.

    The Θ(+) pentaquark baryon was searched for via the π(-)p→K(-)X reaction with a missing mass resolution of 1.4 MeV/c(2) (FWHM) at the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC). π(-) meson beams were incident on the liquid hydrogen target with a beam momentum of 1.92 GeV/c. No peak structure corresponding to the Θ(+) mass was observed. The upper limit of the production cross section averaged over the scattering angle of 2° to 15° in the laboratory frame is obtained to be 0.26 μb/sr in the mass region of 1.51-1.55 GeV/c(2). The upper limit of the Θ(+) decay width is obtained to be 0.72 and 3.1 MeV for J(Θ)(P)=1/2(+) and J(Θ)(P)=1/2(-), respectively, using the effective Lagrangian approach.

    The HypHI Phase 0 experiment with Li-6 projectiles at 2 A GeV on a carbon target has been performed at GS' in order to demonstrate the feasibility of precise hypernuclear spectroscopy with peripheral heavy ion collisions. Current data analyses have preliminary shown peaks in invariant mass distributions of p + pi(-) for Lambda, He-3 + pi(-) for H-3(Lambda) and He-4 + pi(-) for H-4(Lambda).     The HypHI experiment for precise hypernuclear spectroscopy with induced reactions of stable heavy ion beams and rare isotope beams is currently under preparation at GSI. The main goal of the HypHI project is to study neutron and proton rich hypernuclei and to measure directly hypernuclear magnetic moments at GSI and FAIR. In the first HypHI experiment (Phase 0) planned in 2009, the feasibility of precise hypernuclear spectroscopy with heavy ion beams will be demonstrated by observing pi(-) decay channels of Lambda(3)H, Lambda(4)H and Lambda(5)He with (6)Li projectiles at 2 Lambda GeV impinging on a (12)C target. An overview of the HypHI project and the details of the Phase 0 experiment will be discussed.

    The HypHI Phase 0 experiment to demonstrate the feasibility of precise hypernuclear spectroscopy with induced reactions of heavy ion beams was performed at GSI in August and October in 2009, with a projectile of Li-6 at 2 A GeV impinged on carbon graphite target with a thickness of 8 g/cm(2). The experiment mainly aims to reconstruct events of H-3(Lambda), H-4(Lambda) and He-5(Lambda) by observing the pi(-) decay channel. Details of the HypHI Phase 0 experiment performed in August in 2009 will be discussed.

    The J-PARC hadron experimental facility has now been completed and is starting operation. We plan to use several types of the readout systems based on CAMAC/FERA, VME bus, TKO, and KEK-VME/COPPER at the early stage of J-PARC hadron experiments. Therefore, we need to integrate many different data acquisition readouts. On the other hand, the network has become the most popular inter-subsystem communication method. Most readout systems have network interfaces or a controller which has network interfaces and talk with the TCP/IP protocol. Under this situation, we have developed network-based DAQ software and trigger/tag distribution system for J-PARC hadron experiments. The DAQ software works with a number of simple function processes and they communicate with each other using two pathways that we call DATA PATH and MESSAGE PATH. The detector data are transported through the DATA PATH and the controllable processes are controlled by the messages via the MESSAGE PATH. The trigger/tag distribution system (TDS) works with three module types, Master Trigger Module, Repeater and Receiver Module. The TDS distributes the timing signals such as the trigger and the event tag using a pair of category six standard network cables. The system works well without any critical issues in bench tests. We will use the system in several J-PARC hadron experiments, such as E05, E13 and other subsequent hadron experiments.

    The construction and properties of three sets of two-dimensional scintillating fiber detector arrays for tracking of charged particles used in the HypHI Phase 0 experiment at GSI will be reported in this paper. The position resolutions and the detection efficiency of detectors have been obtained for each layer of detectors by using Li-6 primary beams and particles with Z = 1 produced by fragment reactions of Xe-136 projectiles on the hydrogen target. Besides, the response of energy deposition of charged particles in the first detector set placed right behind the target has been studied by using light projectile fragments with Z = 1, 2 and 3 produced by Ni-58 and C-12 beams. Extracted resolutions for energy deposition and position as well as the detection efficiency fulfill the requirements of the HypHl Phase 0 experiment. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
