    Abstract

The latest Triassic was characterised by protracted biotic extinctions concluding in the End-Triassic Extinction (~ 200 Ma) and a global carbon cycle perturbation. The onset of declining diversity is closely related to reducing conditions that spread globally from upper Sevatian (uppermost Norian) to across the Norian-Rhaetian boundary, likely triggered by unusually high volcanic activity. We correlate significant organic carbon cycle perturbations to an increase of CO2 in the ocean–atmosphere system, likely outgassed by the Angayucham igneous province, the onset of which is indicated by the initiation of a rapid decline in 87Sr/86Sr and 188Os/187Os seawater values. A possible causal mechanism involves elevated CO2 levels causing global warming and accelerating chemical weathering, which increased nutrient discharge to the oceans and greatly increased biological productivity. Higher export production and oxidation of organic matter led to a global O2 decrease in marine water across the Norian/Rhaetian boundary (NRB). Biotic consequences of dysoxia/anoxia include worldwide extinctions in some fossil groups, such as bivalves, ammonoids, conodonts, radiolarians.

Radiolarians have been used to determine geological ages and have contributed markedly to our understanding of Earth’s history. Hydrofluoric acid (HF) has traditionally been used to extract radiolarian fossils from siliceous deposits (i.e., radiolarian cherts), but this acid is strictly regulated because of environmental and human health concerns. Here we report on the successful extraction of radiolarians from cherts using a low-concentration NaOH solution (1 mol/L NaOH) as an alternative to HF. The degree of chert dissolution in NaOH is strongly temperature-dependent and is limited at < 80 °C. However, even a 1 mol/L NaOH solution is sufficient to dissolve chert at 100 °C. Our new NaOH method yields better-preserved radiolarian fossils compared with the conventional HF method. The 1 mol/L NaOH solution is less hazardous, easier to handle, and has fewer effects on the environment and human health than HF. Therefore, this method can be widely used for research and teaching purposes in studies of radiolarian fossils, even in institutions where HF cannot be used owing to chemical restrictions.

We investigated the geochemical and rock magnetic properties of the magnetostratigraphically calibrated Pignola-Abriola section (Italy) in order to understand the climatic perturbations that characterize the late Norian-early Rhaetian interval (Late Triassic). We performed experiments on anhysteretic and isothermal remanence (ARM and IRM) and on magnetic susceptibility (χ) to obtain the rock magnetic parameters necessary for our paleoclimatic investigation. An episode of increase in the relative quantity of hematite, suggesting the enhanced subaerial oxidation of iron minerals, was identified in the Norian from ~217 Ma in the Alaunian up to ~211 Ma in the early Sevatian, followed by a decline up to 207-206 Ma at the end of the Norian (late Sevatian). The results of geochemical and multivariate statistical analyses support a long-term increase and reduction in rock weathering, confirming and extending previous 87Sr / 86Sr data from the Pizzo Mondello section (Italy). Possible causes of these long-term weathering trends are the multiphase uplifting of the Cimmerian orogen, occurring at mid-northern latitudes along the southern margin of Asia in the Late Triassic, and/or the northward motion of Pangea across the equatorial humid belt. Rapid excursions in oxidized iron minerals have also been observed across the Norian-Rhaetian boundary, the origin of which still has to be determined.

The Carnian Pluvial Episode (CPE) was a short interval of extreme rainfall in the Late Triassic that caused significant changes in marine ecosystems. Global warming induced by Wrangellia volcanism is thought to have resulted in oceanic anoxia during the CPE, but the global extent, duration, and severity of anoxia, and its effects on major marine taxa, remain unclear. To address this, we examined an equatorial record of conditions in the Panthalassa Ocean during the CPE, focusing on marine Os isotope data, redox conditions, and conodont and radiolarian biostratigraphy. The results show that Wrangellia volcanism peaked in the latest Julian (early Carnian), coinciding with development of reducing conditions in the deep-sea Panthalassa. A strong conodont turnover occurred during the period of oceanic anoxia, whereas radiolarians were less affected and their diversity increased after the recovery from anoxia. The increased radiolarian diversity during the early Tuvalian (late Carnian) can be attributed to chemical weathering and enhanced nutrient fluxes associated with global warming and the more humid climate of Pangea.

The late Norian “chaotic carbon episode” in the Late Triassic has been identified in North America, Italy, and China, reflecting a global carbon isotope perturbation. Although it has been suggested that catastrophic events, such as the emplacement of large igneous provinces, were the cause of this perturbation, direct evidence for volcanic forcing is lacking. In order to investigate the cause of the global “chaotic carbon episode” in the late Norian, we obtained osmium and organic carbon isotope data (187Os/188Os and δ13Corg) and major, trace, and highly siderophile element data and documented changes in radiolarian assemblages in a middle–upper Norian bedded chert succession in the Sakahogi section, Japan, deposited in a low-latitude zone of the Panthalassa Ocean. The δ13Corg data exhibit a significant carbon isotope excursion (CIE) during the late Norian (Sevatian 1) Mockina bidentata conodont zone. High-resolution 187Os/188Os data exhibit two negative shifts during the CIE, which are interpreted as related to volcanic activity. The biostratigraphic age and Os isotopic mass balance considerations for the ocean suggest that the onset of Angayucham volcanism was the source of unradiogenic Os that caused the decrease in seawater 187Os/188Os ratios during the Sevatian. A remarkable diversification of radiolarians with a large Mesosaturnalis bloom occurred during the low-187Os/188Os interval. This suggests that the Sevatian Mesosaturnalis species are likely indicators of the onset of Angayucham volcanism.

    Abstract

Microfossils are important components of sedimentary rocks used for palaeontological, biostratigraphic, palaeoenvironmental and palaeoclimatic investigations. They are usually extracted from rocks using an acid solution, which might vary depending on the embedding rock lithology. Here we propose a new method using common NaOH (sodium hydroxide; soda) to digest cherts (micro‐ and cryptocrystalline quartz) instead of the standard technique based on HF (hydrofluoric acid). This new method allows the collection of undamaged specimens of different kinds of microfossils, such as conodonts, radiolarians, teeth and dermal scales, the minerology of which is still preserved (e.g. biogenic apatite in conodonts). The use of soda is thus recommended, as it is less dangerous, less expensive, and it better preserves the extracted microfossils both in shape and mineralogy.

It is generally accepted that conodonts went extinct at the end of the Triassic, but younger conodont fossils have been reported, and it is becoming clear that conodont extinction occurred asynchronously across different regions. Although some reports of post-Triassic conodonts have been disproven, Lower Jurassic conodonts have been found in the Buda area of Hungary and the Inuyama area of Japan. Here, we report the discovery of more conodonts Misikella posthernsteini above the first occurrence of the typical Jurassic radiolarian Pantanellium tanuense, which is not know from the Triassic, in the Kastuyama section, Inuyama area, reaffirming the authenticity of the Lower Jurassic conodonts. The conodonts survived into the Jurassic in the Inuyama area might be due to their remote locations relative to the Central Atlantic Magmatic Province, which buffered them from hypoxia and ocean acidification. Although conodont survived into the Lower Jurassic, they failed to recover and quickly went extinct in post-extinction ecosystems. The “dead clades walking” (DCWs) of conodont may have been due to protracted ocean acidification in the earliest Jurassic. Food scarcity and competition with other organisms may have led to the eventual extinction of conodonts.

The Carnian Pluvial Episode (CPE, ∼233 Ma) was characterized by multiple negative carbon-isotope excursions, turnovers in marine and terrestrial biota, and a Tethys-wide humid climate accompanied by abundant terrigenous sediment and freshwater input into sedimentary basins. A general temporal coincidence between the CPE and the emplacement of the Wrangellia Large Igneous Province (Wrangellia LIP) has been well documented, however, it remains unclear whether fluctuations in the intensity of the LIP's activity could be linked to the biotic and climate changes at the CPE. We here present mercury (Hg) concentration and isotope ratio records from a pelagic deep-water succession (Section N-O, Inuyama, Japan) that encompasses the CPE interval. Data reveal concurrent peaks in the Hg concentrations and ratios of Hg to TOC and enrichment factors ThEF, AlEF, ZnEF, and NiEF implying that excess Hg loading in the sediments occurred, likely due to volcanic activity, prior to the CPE siliciclastic input. Furthermore, Δ199Hg values show a negative shift across the boundary between the Julian 1 and Julian 2, followed by a positive shift up to near-zero values at the Julian/Tuvalian transition. The near-zero Δ199Hg values at the Julian/Tuvalian boundary are associated with an increase in Hg and Cu loading, suggesting a peak of volcanogenic Hg and Cu input that may indicate a climax in the Wrangellia LIP activity. Most notably, the Julian/Tuvalian transition is where evidence of the most pronounced changes in carbonate platform evolution, biological turnover and climate change associated with the event has been highlighted. Our results therefore suggest that variations in the intensity of LIP volcanism may have played a major role in driving biotic and climate changes during the CPE. Our results provide a model for other mass extinction events associated with LIPs (e.g., the end-Permian) where low-intensity background volcanism was punctuated by high-intensity pulses, these latter being the real killers.

    Abstract

Stratovolcanoes form conical mountains by ejecta and lava, while caldera volcanoes have depressions caused by post caldera collapse. Few studies have investigated relationships between this morphology difference and discharged fluid geochemistry. Here we present helium isotope ratios of geothermal fluids and groundwater inside and outside the caldera of Mt. Aso, Japan, and compare these to helium ratios in groundwater at Mt. Unzen, a stratovolcano in the same tectonic field. We find that helium isotopes decrease in proportion to distance from the central part of the volcano. However, the helium isotopes of inferred magmas are lower in Mt. Aso relative to Mt. Unzen. We combine this result with seismic tomography data and suggest that Mt. Aso may not be receiving new mantle material to the magma reservoir. Thus, we conclude that the caldera volcano Mt Aso probably features older magma and more developed geothermal systems than the stratovolcano Mt. Unzen.

Relics of the Panthalassa Ocean occur today in accretionary complexes and terranes on the entire Circum-Pacific region. Among them, remains of shallow-water carbonate systems provide valuable information about the ecology and environmental conditions that prevailed in this immense ocean. In this regard, the Shiriya Cape of the North Kitakami Belt (Aomori Prefecture, Honshu Island, Japan) is an essential place to study. Characterized by the presence of numerous limestone deposits embedded in typical accretionary mélange, including pluri-kilometric massive slabs and metric bedded deposits, the cape is indeed a key vestige of carbonate deposition in the Panthalassa. All the limestone outcrop form the Shiriya Cape were sampled and studied in detail for the first time. Despite a general poor preservation, macroscopic sedimentary features such as burrows and large megalodontids patches as well as four microfacies were identified and are presented in detail in this work. On the basis of foraminifers and conodonts biostratigraphy, the age of the limestone deposits is defined as Norian. Similarities with analogous and synchronous systems from Panthalassan and Tethyan realms are extensively discussed. The closest analog to the Shiriya limestone appears to be the Panthalassan Dalnegorsk limestone (Russian Far East), both regarding microfacies and depositional setting. Sedimentary successions similar to Lofer-cycles, well known in Tethyan synchronous systems, were also discovered in the Shiriya Cape. Along with the large limestone slabs, countless limestone-bearing conglomerates also crop out on the Shiriya Cape. Their study and comparison with similar deposits in Japan highlighted their importance in the understanding of the dismantling of mid-oceanic carbonates. The observations and comparison with well-known carbonate systems permitted to establish a hypothetical depositional model of the Shiriya limestone corresponding to a Norian isolated carbonate system developed on an immerged volcanic seamount.

またコノドントについては,後期ノーリアン後期を示す<i>Parvigondorella andrusovi</i>や<i>Misikella hernsteini</i>など2属5種が同定された.検討セクション最上部の<i>B. deweveri</i>最終産出層準付近では,<i>Misikella hernsteini</i>とレーティアンの基底に対比される<i>Misikalla posthernsteini</i>の中間的な形態を持つ種(<i>M. posthernsteini </i>s.l.)の産出が認められた.<i>M. posthernsteini </i>s.l. は本来記載された<i>M. posthernsteini</i>(便宜上<i>M. posthernsteini </i>s.s. とする)とは異なる特徴を有しており,<i>M. hernsteini</i>から<i>M. posthernsteini</i> s.s. このことから,<i>M. posthernsteini</i> s.s. 本セクションのノーリアン/レーティアン境界のより正確な層準を決定するにあたり,<i>M. hernsteini </i>から<i>M. posthernsteini </i>s.l. および<i>M. posthernsteini</i> s.s. Rigo, M. et al., 2020, <i>Earth-Science Reviews,</i> 204, 103180. 本研究の結果,セクションOからはTR-2C帯(<i>Triassocampe deweveri</i>帯)からTR-5A帯(<i>Capnuchosphaera</i>帯)までの6つの放散虫化石帯が認められた. この頁岩層を境にして, <i>Muelleritortis noblis</i>から<i>Muelleritortis cochleata</i>への棘(spine)の形態変化および,<i>Tritortis integrita</i>から<i>Tritortis kretaensis</i>への形態変化が特徴的にみられた。 Nesbitt, H.W., Young, G.M., 1982,<i> Nature</i>, <b>299</b>, 715-717 ・Ohta, T., Arai, H., 2007, <i>Chemical Geology</i>, <b>240</b>, 280-297 ・Sugiyama, K., 1997, <i>Bulletin of the</i> <i>Mizunami Fossil Mus</i>., <b>24</b>, 79-193</p>

【引用文献】Dal Corso, J. et al. 2015, Carbon isotope records reveal synchronicity between carbon cycle perturbation and the “Carnian Pluvial Event” in the Tethys realm (Late Triassic). <i>Glob. The end-Triassic mass extinction (ETE) is thought to have been triggered by widespread eruption and emissions of volcanic and contact metamorphic carbon and sulfur gases from the Central Atlantic Magmatic Province (CAMP) flood basalts. Although palynological studies of shallow marine deposits in the basins of Denmark and Germany suggest that deforestation and catastrophic soil loss occurred during the CAMP volcanism and ETE interval, the intensity and timing of continental weathering in the region of northwestern Tethys Ocean remain unclear. Here we present Sr, C, and O isotope data, as well as multivariate statistical analyses of major element contents, for carbonate–clastic deposits in the Kardolína section, Slovakia, to develop a continental weathering record in the NW Tethys during the ETE event. This section consists of a shallow marine carbonate sequence in the Rhaetian Fatra Formation and the overlying Hettangian Kopieniec Formation. The Fatra Formation represents ramp facies deposits that formed in a restricted pull-apart basin of the Fatric Zone along the southern margin of the Bohemian Massif in the region of northwestern Tethys. Carbon isotope analysis of the limestones revealed two negative carbon isotope excursions (NCIEs) in the uppermost Fatra Formation. These two NCIEs occurred in the latest Rhaetian and can be compared to the “precursor” and “initial” NCIEs reported for the northwestern Tethys. Strontium isotope analysis of the limestones revealed an abrupt increase in Sr isotope ratios between the precursor and initial NCIEs, which indicates that continental weathering of the Bohemian Massif increased rapidly in the latest Rhaetian. Multivariate analysis of major element contents in the carbonate rocks also shows that intense chemical weathering of the hinterland was accelerated after the precursor NCIE, supporting the inferences drawn from Sr isotopes. Furthermore, our study reveals that the carbonate depositional environments of the Fatra Formation changed to the formation of specific Fe-rich oolites with increased continental weathering after the precursor NCIE. The concentrations of redox-sensitive major elements (e.g., Mn and Fe) and multivariate analysis of the major element data suggest that the Fe-rich oolites were formed by an influx of O-depleted water into the shallow water depositional environment of the Fatra Formation. A possible origin for this O-depleted water is the oxygen minimum zone (OMZ) that formed at intermediate water depths in European basins (e.g., the German and Eiberg basins) during the latest Rhaetian. Our results suggest that the marine environment in the European basins may have developed an OMZ due to the increase in continental weathering during the latest Rhaetian, and these environmental changes may have had an important role in the marine ETE event.

Numerous stratiform manganese deposits occur in the Permian to Jurassic bedded chert successions of the Jurassic accretionary complexes of the Chichibu, Mino–Tamba, and North Kitakami belts in Japan. These accretionary complexes consist of deep-sea sediments accumulated in a pelagic, open-ocean setting within the Panthalassa Ocean. Although the depositional ages and processes of the Permian and Jurassic manganese deposits in these accretionary complexes have been studied, the Triassic bedded chert-hosted stratiform manganese deposits are poorly understood. We investigated the occurrence and stratigraphic distribution of Triassic stratiform manganese deposits in Japan, constraining their ages by means of integrated conodont–radiolarian biostratigraphy. On the basis of the conodont and radiolarian biostratigraphies, the depositional age of the Triassic manganese deposits was constrained to the latest Julian to earliest Tuvalian (mid-Carnian). This age indicates that the formation of the Triassic manganese deposits occurred contemporaneously with the last eruptive phase of the Wrangellia Large Igneous Province (LIP) volcanism and subsequent changes in the deep-sea redox conditions in the Panthalassa Ocean during the Carnian pluvial episode (CPE). Therefore, these manganese deposits may have been formed with the hydrothermal activity associated with the eruption of the Wrangellia LIP and/or the subsequent changes in marine redox conditions in the CPE.

A series of biotic crises and turnovers have been recorded at the Norian/Rhaetian boundary (NRB), together with a putative perturbation to the global carbon cycle in the form of one or more negative carbon-isotope shifts. Despite this evidence, the full validation of Norian/Rhaetian climate changes has not been possible. In particular, no clear record of Norian/Rhaetian environmental change has yet been recovered from a terrestrial setting. The eruption of the Angayucham Large Igneous Province has been considered as a possible cause for the putative NRB negative carbon-isotope shifts. Hg as a volcanism proxy has been well-studied in many ancient marine and terrestrial sediments, but to date no Hg record has been obtained across the NRB. In this study, we focus on a terrestrial Norian-Rhaetian section (Xujiahe section) located north of Guangyuan in the northwestern Sichuan Basin, which has been correlated to the NRB using cyclostratigraphy and magnetostratigraphy. A long-lived negative trend in δ13Corg, superimposed with four negative shifts, is recognized across the NRB interval. This can be correlated to the uppermost part of the third negative δ13Corg shift (named S3) recognized in profiles from marine sites in Europe. Contemporaneous Hg concentration, Hg/Al and Hg/TOC anomalies in the Xujiahe section were possibly caused by large-scale volcanic activity. The large amplitude changes in δ13Corg (ca. −5.2‰) that we observe are suggested to be associated with local wildfire and enhanced coarse sediment input, indicating a significant environmental change during the NRB interval. Similar paleoclimatic perturbations have been noted across other extinction events (e.g., end-Permian mass extinction event) as a result of the emplacement of large igneous provinces, or because of felsic volcanism.

またコノドントについては,後期ノーリアン後期を示す<i>Parvigondorella andrusovi</i>や<i>Misikella hernsteini</i>など2属5種が同定された.検討セクション最上部の<i>B. deweveri</i>最終産出層準付近では,<i>Misikella hernsteini</i>とレーティアンの基底に対比される<i>Misikalla posthernsteini</i>の中間的な形態を持つ種(<i>M. posthernsteini </i>s.l.)の産出が認められた.<i>M. posthernsteini </i>s.l. は本来記載された<i>M. posthernsteini</i>(便宜上<i>M. posthernsteini </i>s.s. とする)とは異なる特徴を有しており,<i>M. hernsteini</i>から<i>M. posthernsteini</i> s.s. このことから,<i>M. posthernsteini</i> s.s. 本セクションのノーリアン/レーティアン境界のより正確な層準を決定するにあたり,<i>M. hernsteini </i>から<i>M. posthernsteini </i>s.l. および<i>M. posthernsteini</i> s.s. Rigo, M. et al., 2020, <i>Earth-Science Reviews,</i> 204, 103180. 本研究の結果,セクションOからはTR-2C帯(<i>Triassocampe deweveri</i>帯)からTR-5A帯(<i>Capnuchosphaera</i>帯)までの6つの放散虫化石帯が認められた. この頁岩層を境にして, <i>Muelleritortis noblis</i>から<i>Muelleritortis cochleata</i>への棘(spine)の形態変化および,<i>Tritortis integrita</i>から<i>Tritortis kretaensis</i>への形態変化が特徴的にみられた。 Nesbitt, H.W., Young, G.M., 1982,<i> Nature</i>, <b>299</b>, 715-717 ・Ohta, T., Arai, H., 2007, <i>Chemical Geology</i>, <b>240</b>, 280-297 ・Sugiyama, K., 1997, <i>Bulletin of the</i> <i>Mizunami Fossil Mus</i>., <b>24</b>, 79-193

Schmitz, B. et al., 2019. We conducted oxygen and hydrogen isotope measurements of clay mineral in a sediment core obtained from an active hydrothermal filed in the Okinawa Trough, in order to estimate subseafloor thermal gradient based on isotope geothermometry. We found very steep thermal gradient up to 20 degree/meter at the upper most layer of the altered zone.

Among sediment cores collected from Ieyama hydrothermal field in the Okinawa Trough, mineralization layers with occurrence of barite and sphalerite were identified between 53-65 mbsf. We have conducted chronological study of barite in the sediment using 226Ra‐210Pb dating and ESR dating. The results yielded 20-90 yrs. and 350-1050 yrs. as formation ages. On the other hand, radiocarbon dating of planktic foraminifera in the surface sediment at 0.15-0.20 mbsf collected from three places in the study field yielded 900‐1500 yrs. There results provide constraint on mineralization process that occurred beneath the seafloor.
