  • Research theme: My research interests are study of various kinetic equations, particularly the non cut-off Boltzmann equation. I study the existence, uniqueness, and regularity of solutions to a Cauchy problem of the equation. My main results are: the construction of a global solution to the non cut-off Boltzmann equation near the global equilibrium in Besov spaces over the whole space[Morimoto and S., J. Differential Equation 261(2016)], and the construction of a global solution to the equation near the equilibrium in the Wiener space over the torus and the strip [Duan et al., Comm. Pure Appl. Math. 74(2021)]. The uniqueness of solutions and their time-decay rates are also proved. I will study the regularity of the obtained solutions, and the construction of solutions to the equation with more slowly decaying initial data.

In the paper, we develop an L1k ∩ Lpk approach to construct global solutions to the Cauchy problem on the non-cutoff Boltzmann equation near equilibrium in ℝ3. In particular, only smallness of ||Fxf0||L1∩Lp(ℝ3k;L2(ℝ3v)) with 3/2 < p ≤ ∞ is imposed on initial data f0(x, v), where Fxf0(k, v) is the Fourier transform in space variable. This provides the first result on the global existence of such low-regularity solutions without relying on Sobolev embedding H2(ℝ3x) ⊂ L∞(ℝ3x) in the case of the whole space. Different from the use of sufficiently smooth Sobolev spaces in the classical results [P. T. Gressman and R. M. Strain, J. Amer. Math. Soc., 24 (2011), pp. 771-847] and [R. Alexandre et al., J. Funct. Anal., 262 (2012), pp. 915-1010], there is a crucial difference between the torus case and the whole space case for low-regularity solutions under consideration. In fact, for the former, it is enough to take the only L1k norm corresponding to the Weiner space as studied in [R. J. Duan et al., Comm. Pure Appl. Math., 74 (2021), pp. 932-1020]. In contrast, for the latter, the extra interplay with the Lpk norm plays a vital role in controlling the nonlinear collision term due to the degenerate dissipation of the macroscopic component. Indeed, the propagation of the Lpk norm helps gain an almost optimal decay rate (1+t)-32 (1- p1)+ of the L1k norm via the time-weighted energy estimates in the spirit of the idea of [S. Kawashima, J. Hyperbolic Differ. Equ., 1 (2004), pp. 581-603] and, in turn, this is necessarily used for establishing the global existence.

The Boltzmann equation is studied without the cutoff assumption. Under a perturbative setting, a unique global solution of the Cauchy problem of the equation is established in a critical Chemin-Lerner space. In order to analyze the collisional term of the equation, a Chemin-Lerner norm is combined with a non isotropic norm with respect to a velocity variable, which yields an a priori estimate for an energy estimate. Together with local existence following from commutator estimates and the Hahn-Banach extension theorem, the desired solution is obtained. (C) 2016 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

An equation describing mutation process in bacteria is considered in the form of a kinetic equation. The existence of a unique global solution to the Fourier-transformed equation is shown in spaces of characteristic functions whose corresponding probability measures possess finite moments. Due to correspondences of such spaces of probability measures and those of characteristic functions, a unique global probability measure solution to the original equation is found in the weak sense. Moreover, it is shown that if the support of the initial data is in R+, then that of the solution is also in R+. The proof is based on a contraction argument applied to the spatially homogeneous Boltzmann equation and the analysis of a solution as a boundary characteristic function.

We consider the nonlinear boundary layers of the Boltzmann equation on a three-dimensional half-space by perturbing around a Maxwellian under the assumption that the Mach number of the Maxwellian satisfies M∞<−1. In earlier works by S. Ukai, T. Yang, S.-H. Yu, nonlinear boundary layers of the Boltzmann equation in a half-line are considered, in a half-line are considered, the stationary solutions were obtained and nonlinear stability was confirmed. We establish the existence and uniqueness of stationary and time-periodic solutions for the three-dimensional half-space model and show that these solutions are asymptotically stable.

© 2019 American Institute of Mathematical Sciences. All Rights Reserved. A typical approach to analysing statistical properties of expanding maps is to show spectral gaps of associated transfer operators in adapted function spaces. The classical function spaces for this purpose are Hölder spaces and Sobolev spaces. Natural generalisations of these spaces are Besov spaces, on which we show a spectral gap of transfer operators.

In this paper the Boltzmann equation near global Maxwellians is studied in the d-dimensional whole space. A unique global-in-time mild solution to the Cauchy problem of the equation is established in a Chemin-Lerner type space with respect to the phase variable (x
v). Both hard and soft potentials with angular cutoff are considered. The new function space for global well-posedness is introduced to essentially treat the case of soft potentials, and the key point is that the velocity variable is taken in the weighted supremum norm, and the space variable is in the s-order Besov space with s ≥ d/2 including the spatially critical regularity. The proof is based on the time-decay properties of solutions to the linearized equation together with the bootstrap argument. Particularly, the linear analysis in case of hard potentials is due to the semigroup theory, where the extra time-decay plays a role in coping with initial data in L2 with respect to the space variable. In case of soft potentials, for the time-decay of linear equations we borrow the results based on the pure energy method and further extend them to those in L∞ framework through the technique of L2-L∞ interplay. In contrast to hard potentials, L1 integrability in x of initial data is necessary for soft potentials in order to obtain global solutions to the nonlinear Cauchy problem.

We study the homogeneous Boltzmann equation with the fractional Laplacian term. Working on the Fourier side we solve the resulting integral equation, and improve a previous result by Y.-K. Cho. We replace the initial data space with a certain space M-alpha introduced by Morimoto, Wang, and Yang. This space precisely captures the Fourier image of probability measures with bounded fractional moments, providing a more natural initial condition. We show existence of a unique global solution, in addition to the expected maximal growth estimates and stability estimates. As a consequence we obtain a continuous density solution of the original equation.

We studied an initial value and initial-boundary value problem of the non cut off Boltzmann equation near the global equilibrium. In particular, solutions are characterized by integrability of their Fourier transform.
In the known results, solution spaces such as Sobolev or Besov spaces that can be embedded into the L infinity space were employed in order to control nonlinear estimates. New solution spaces were utilized so that we can complete estimates without such embedding theorems.
