    ・分子集積化技術を利用することで、従来困難であった3成分以上の分子を構成成分とした自己組織化発光材料(機能性色素)とセンサー素子の開拓研究を行った。
    ・赤色・近赤外発光を示す環状テトラピロール系色素(ポルフィセン)の新規合成法と光機能開拓研究を行った。
    ・キラルな螺旋錯体、軸不斉錯体(機能性色素)の合成と強発光・大きなストークスシフト・円偏光発光特性を示す材料の開拓研究を行った。

    ・複数成分の分子(二成分、三成分、それ以上)の組み合わせによる自己組織化発光材料(機能性色素)に取り組み、複合材料とすることではじめて取得可能な新物質(機能性色素)の創製法を提案した。

    Abstract

    Advanced organoboron dyes, incorporating tetra‐boron difluoride (tetra‐BF<sub>2</sub>) moieties, are developed, demonstrating efficient electrochemiluminescence (ECL) emissions in the green to orange regions through direct ion annihilation. By introducing diverse alkyl modifications in the molecules, luminescence color tuning is achieved via alterations in conjugation and bending angle. A photoluminescence quantum yield of 100% in dilute solutions is successfully achieved. Notably, the introduction of alkyl groups to the methine side stabilizes the radical ionic state, resulting in a high ECL efficiency of 74% through an efficient radical‐ion annihilation pathway. The key factor is that the energy of the annihilation reaction exceeds the S<sub>1</sub> energy required for luminescence. Spin density calculations further elucidate the substituent effects on the radical ions of complexes. Moreover, the lasing properties of these materials in the solution‐processed blend films are investigated, revealing a low amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) threshold (E<sub>th</sub>) of 6.40 ± 0.24 µJ cm<sup>−2</sup>, which is notably lower among organic laser materials. This is attributed to their large Stokes shifts and high quantum yield. The excellent ECL and ASE performances establish these materials as a valuable addition to the existing library of organoboron dyes, offering fresh insights into the development of organic solid‐state lasers.

    Supramolecular chemistry under mechanochemical conditions has drawn attention because it can induce low-solubility molecules to self-assemble, although most of the reported examples have been limited to two-component systems. We applied mechanochemical synthesis to achieve multimolecular self-assembly in more challenging three-component systems. The produced crystals showed multicolor solid-state luminescence depending on the components when exposed to UV light.  Optical outputs and X-ray diffraction studies were used to examine the self-assembling behavior in greater depth. Using synchrotron radiation, in situ X-ray diffraction permitted direct observation of the milling process, which started the self-assembly process within 1 min. This research emphasizes the importance of multicomponent molecules with optical functions and self-assembling behavior and offers the possibility of developing more complicated multicomponent crystals and organic solid solutions for advanced materials.

    The utilization of aluminum, an abundant and inexpensive element, for the synthesis of novel functional complexes is extremely important, but the design and control of photofunctionality are still unexplored. In this study, we focused on our previously developed dinuclear triple-stranded helicates incorporating two aluminum ions (ALPHY) to synthesize both homoleptic and heteroleptic complexes with bromine atoms at the 3-position of the pyrrole moiety in the Schiff base ligands. The brominated Schiff base ligands were reacted with AlCl3 to synthesize homoleptic complexes, while different ligands were mixed to prepare heteroleptic complexes. Single-crystal X-ray structural analysis revealed the structures of these novel complexes. We found that increasing the degree of bromination resulted in a tunable emission color, shifting progressively from 550 (yellow) to 566 nm (orange). Optical resolution of the complexes facilitated the observation of mirror-image circular dichroism and circularly polarized luminescence. Furthermore, employing ultrafast spectroscopy techniques, we have elucidated that the optical properties are governed by the interligand charge transfer (ILCT) among the three ligands. The formation of heteroleptic complexes induces the ILCT state even in nonpolar environments, thereby accelerating nonradiative decay and intersystem crossing. These findings mark significant advancements in photofunctional materials based on multinuclear complexes.

    The construction of novel complexes can lead to the manifestation of unexpected structures and properties, thereby making chemical exploration in experiments a potential source for novel discoveries. In this study, by reacting 6,6′-dihydrazineyl-2,2′-bipyridine with acyl chlorides and subsequently coordinating with boron trifluoride, two different boron-tetradentate ligand complexes were simultaneously generated. One of these complexes exhibited a unique structure in which tetra-BF2 moieties coordinated to all four coordination sites of the ligand molecule, forming a flag-hinged structure around the bipyridine part. The second complex featured a helical structure formed by the hybridization of two BF2 and one B-O-B moieties, representing a highly unusual form of the complex. The structures of these two boron complexes were consistently observed when various substituted acyl chlorides were employed. Furthermore, it was found that enhancing electron-donor properties could induce a redshift in emissions. Utilizing the dimethylamino group as the proton receptor promoted a yellow-to-blue fluorescence switch in the tetra-BF2 complex and an OFF/ON fluorescence in the B-O-B bridged complex upon protonation. The helical chirality observed in the latter complex resulted in stable (P)/(M)-enantiomers after optical resolution. This complex exhibited circular dichroism with a |gabs| of up to 1.2 × 10−2 and circularly polarized luminescence with a |glum| on the order of 10−3 in solution and polymer film.

    Functional dyes can interconvert energies, such as light, heat, and electricity, and they have broad applications in various fields. This review highlights our endeavors in the creation of novel photofunctional materials in solution and solid states via molecular assemblies, linkage, and distortion and the integration of supramolecular complex formation and host–guest chemistry. One approach involves the synthesis of solid-state luminescent materials with the use of cocrystals comprising host molecules with dye backbones and guest molecules derived from aromatic compounds. Cocrystal formation is tuned via intermolecular interactions, such as hydrogen bonding, charge-transfer interactions, π-π stacking, and inclusion phenomena of the crystal engineering approach. This state leads to the emergence of properties such as fluorescence, room-temperature phosphorescence, and the potential for applications in optical sensors. In the second approach, functional dyes comprising multidentate ligands with various elements, which results in photofunctional properties in solution and solid states. This method delves into structural characteristics affected by the distortion and torsional angles of multinuclear complexes and their resulting photophysical properties. Multinuclear complexes encompass helical and axial chirality. Here, we discuss the isolation of enantiomers through optical resolution and their subsequent circular dichroism and circularly polarized luminescence characteristics. The position and nature of substituents considerably affected the ground and excited states of the complexes, which led to the formation of unique photofunctional materials. These methodologies offer insightful and effective avenues for the further improvement of the functionality and device applicability of functional dyes.

    Abstract

    To detect small aromatic molecules in water, we prepared functional host molecules based on water‐soluble N,N’‐bis(2‐aminobenzophenone)‐1,4,5,8‐naphthalenetetracarboxylic diimide (1) and a solubilizing agent using a high‐speed vibration milling apparatus. The fluorescence response of host 1‐solubilizing agent complexes before and after extraction of small aromatic guest molecules was large and the fluorescence maxima were dependent on the small aromatic guest molecules.

    Self-inclusion complexes consisting of host-guest conjugates are one of the unique supramolecular structures because they form in-state and out-state depending on the external stimuli. Despite many reports of the stimuli-responsive self-inclusion complex formation, study of the structural relaxation from out-state to in-state by photoexcitation has been unexplored. Herein, we report that an electron-donating host and an electron-accepting guest conjugate exhibits the structural relaxation from out-state to in-state by photoexcitation. Formation of the in-state in the excited state resulted in exciplex emission along with the locally excited emission from the out-state. Moreover, this structural relaxation by photoexcitation was suppressed not only by temperature, but also by the presence of guest molecules, resulting in changes in the ratio of the dual emission intensities.

    This study explored the development of functional dyes using aluminum, focusing on aluminum-based dinuclear triple-stranded helicates, and examined the effects of substituent variations on their structural and optical properties. Key findings revealed that the modification of methyl groups to the pyrrole positions significantly extended the conjugation system, resulting in a red shift in the absorption and emission spectra. Conversely, the modification of methyl groups at the methine positions due to steric hindrances increased the torsion angle of the ligands, leading to a blue shift in the absorption and emission spectra. A common feature across all complexes was that in the excited state, one of the three ligands underwent significant structural relaxation. This led to a pronounced Stokes shift and minimal spectra overlap with high photoluminescence behaviors. Moreover, our research extended to the optical resolution of the newly synthesized complexes by analyzing the chiroptical properties of the resulting enantiomers, including their circular dichroism and circularly polarized luminescence. These insights offer valuable contributions to the design and application of novel aluminum-based functional dyes, potentially influencing a range of fields, from materials science to optoelectronics.

    Three structural isomers of naphthalene diimides were synthesized. In all compounds, the electron-withdrawing diimide group exhibits a stable two-step reduction behavior under electrochemical conditions, and it was revealed that their reduction potentials vary significantly depending on the position of the diimide group relative to the naphthalene ring.

    Abstract

    Materials exhibiting room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) have recently emerged as a subject of significant interest. In this study, we successfully created inclusion crystals by introducing halobenzenes as guests into a host molecule combining benzophenone with naphthalene diimide. This approach led to the creation of fascinating fluorescence and RTP properties dependent on the guest molecules. Notably, crystals containing chlorobenzene showed cyan fluorescence, while those with iodobenzene displayed red RTP. This difference highlights the impact of the guest molecule on the luminescent properties, with the significant external heavy‐atom effect of iodobenzene playing a key role in promoting efficient intersystem crossing between the excited singlet and triplet states. Crystals with bromobenzene exhibited a unique blend of fluorescence and RTP, both from benzophenone and naphthalene diimide, highlighting the moderate heavy‐atom effect. These findings reveal composite materials with remarkably diverse and interesting optical characteristics.

    This study reports an effective peripheral decoration of organic donor-acceptor diads with B(C6F5)3 for stabilizing electrogenerated radical ions. By employing a common p-type organic semiconductor benzothienobenzothiophene (BTBT) as the donor, tetracoordinate boron complexes showed improved solution electrochemiluminescence (ECL) intensity, reaching a 156-fold increase compared to that of the parent diad. The unprecedented Lewis-pairing-induced ECL enhancement is attributed to the multiple roles of B(C6F5)3: 1) redistributing frontier orbitals, 2) facilitating electrochemical excitation, and 3) restricting molecular motions. Furthermore, B(C6F5)3 converted the molecular arrangement of BTBT from conventional 2D herringbones into 1D π-stacks. This robust, highly ordered columnar nanostructure allowed red-shifting of the crystalline film ECL with electrochemical doping through the electronic coupling pathways of BTBT. Our approach will facilitate the development of elaborate metal-free ECL systems.

    Naphthalenediimide derivative-absorbed papers had fluorescence intensity and maximum depending on the type of guest aromatic molecules after exposure to vapors of small 10 guest molecules. Furthermore, the papers showed a mechanochromic property.

    Pyrrole-containing metal complexes widely exist in nature, for example, vitamin B-12, heme, chlorophyll, and their derivatives. Each of them shows significant functions, which are essential for life. To mimic their important functions and substance conversion reactions, numerous pyrrole-containing metal complexes have been synthesized and investigated. This review mainly focuses on cobalt complexes having pyrrolecontaining ligands and the recent progress of molecular transformations catalyzed by the complexes, especially the vitamin B-12-related cobalt complexes and porphycene cobalt complexes. A variety of reaction systems, which enable a number of molecular transformations under mild conditions is described. The construction of new reaction systems and a combination of the materials inspired by natural systems is a promising and effective approach to realizing eco-friendly and cost-effective reaction systems.     Rationally designed unsymmetric tri-BF2red to near-infrared (NIR) emitters were first reported in this study via a facile one-pot synthetic approach. The single-crystal structures and density functional theory calculations suggest their tunable conformation change around the bipyrrole part and unsymmetric structures in which three boron atoms are coordinated with the existing four different bidentate binding pockets, leaving two of the uncoordinated nitrogens in the pyrrole part. These novel tri-BF2emitters in the red to NIR region demonstrated ca. 30% of photoluminescence quantum yield (φPL) in toluene at room temperature and highly intense fluorescence at 77 K (up to 89% of φPLin 2-MeTHF), which is attributed to increased molecular flexibility and enhanced intramolecular charge transfer interactions resulting from symmetry breaking. The photophysical modulation in multi-BF2complexes was achieved by the coordinated number of BF2units, providing a step forward to understanding and guiding the design of the most efficient versatile emissive organoboron compounds.

    One-pot synthetic approach to produce trifluoroacetamide has been developed using an electrochemical method with the B12 complex as a catalyst under mild conditions, in open air at room temperature. Thirty examples of trifluoroacetamide were synthesized from 1,1,1-trichloro-2,2,2-trifluoroethane (CFC-113a) in moderate to good yields. This user-friendly strategy is compatible with a broad range of trifluoroacetamide syntheses.

    This study reports the facile syntheses of tetra-boron difluoride (tetra-BF2 ) complexes, flag-hinge-like molecules that exhibit intense green-to-orange luminescence in solution and yellow-to-red emission in the solid states. Single-crystal structure analysis and density functional theory calculations suggested a bent structure of this series of compounds. The complexes also exhibited excellent optical properties, with quantum yields reaching 100 % and a large Stokes shift. These properties were attributed to the altered bending angle of the molecule in the S1 excited state. As the rotational motion was suppressed around the 2,2'-bipyrrole axis, atropisomers with axial chirality were formed, which are optically resolvable into (R) and (S)-enantiomers through a chiral column. The atropisomers thus function as circularly polarized luminescent (CPL) materials, in which the color (green, green-yellow, and yellow) can be varied by controlling the aggregation state. This rational design of multi-BF2 complexes can potentially realize novel photofunctional materials.

    A new meso-tetrakis(3,5-di-tert-butylphenyl) substituted porphycene and its cobalt complex were synthesized and characterized. Several meso-tetraarylporphycene cobalt complexes having different substituents showed catalytic activity for the hydrogen gas evolution reaction (HER) in the presence of trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) under electrochemical reductive conditions. The electrochemical potential of the HER was -1.50V vs. Ag/AgCl in THF. The active species of this reaction were determined to be the ligand reduced species of Co(II) porphycenes. The catalytic efficiencies of the cobalt complexes of meso-aryl substituted porphycenes and meso-tetraphenylporphyrin were compared and meso-tetraphenyl porphycene cobalt complex exhibited the best current efficiency of 72%. Based on these experimental results and theoretical calculations, we proposed a possible HER mechanism of this system.A new porphycene having four 3,5-di-tert-butylphenyl groups at the meso-positions and its cobalt complex were synthesized and characterized. The electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction via the ligand-centered reduction of porphycene cobalt complexes was investigated. The reaction process was revealed by experimental results and theoretical calculations and was clearly different from the system via metal-centered reduction using porphyrin cobalt complex.

    The aggregation state of two new covalently bonded dinuclear boron-based dye complexes was controlled to fabricate white-light-emitting materials. The materials exhibit blue and orange emission, with a photoluminescence quantum yield of 16% for one of the complexes in the solid state. This study highlights the importance of molecular engineering through the control of dye aggregation as a fundamental technology for creating novel functional materials with interesting optical properties.

    meso-Tetraalkyl porphycenes exhibit unique optical properties with wide potential applications. The very fact that incorporation of porphycenes into polymeric materials is rare, make this approach a particularly attractive one. In this work, meso-tetrakis(3-butenyl)porphycene bearing four terminal olefin groups is prepared via two synthetic strategies: 1) the McMurry reaction using 5,5′-diacyl-2,2′-bipyrroles as precursors and 2) the oxidative coupling of dipyrroethenes. The newly obtained porphycene has been characterized by single X-ray crystallography. A porphycene–polydimethylsiloxane hybrid film is successfully prepared by a platinum-catalyzed hydrosilylation reaction. The hybrid film can be anchored with tweezers, showing a weak red emission with a quantum yield of 0.4 % at room temperature, whose intensity drastically increases reaching a quantum yield of 6.7 % in liquid nitrogen (77 K). This report represents the first example of porphycene-containing elastomeric films for potential application in various fields.

    The synthesis of difluoromethylated (CF 2 R) (R=H, alkyl/aryl, CO 2 R, etc.) compounds has received considerable attention in recent years. In this study, the cobalt(III)−carbon-mediated catalytic C−H difluoroacylation of unactivated arenes and heteroarenes using BrCF 2 CO 2 Et is reported. This catalytic cycle is based on a valence change of the cobalt catalyst, a naturally derived vitamin B 12 derivative, driven by controlled-potential electrolysis at −0.8 V vs. Ag/AgCl under visible-light irradiation in dimethyl sulfoxide. A broad substrate scope is demonstrated, and two compounds were characterized according to their X-ray crystal structures. Mechanistic studies showed that the reaction proceeds through a radical pathway mediated by homolytic cleavage of the cobalt(III)–carbon bond. A turnover number of more than 100 was observed, owing to the inherent stability of the vitamin B 12 framework. This naturally derived catalytic system has potential applications in medicinal chemistry and materials science.

The very fact that incorporation of porphycenes into polymeric materials is rare, make this approach a particularly attractive one. In this work, meso-tetrakis(3-butenyl)porphycene bearing four terminal olefin groups is prepared via two synthetic strategies: 1) the McMurry reaction using 5,5′-diacyl-2,2′-bipyrroles as precursors and 2) the oxidative coupling of dipyrroethenes. The newly obtained porphycene has been characterized by single X-ray crystallography. A porphycene–polydimethylsiloxane hybrid film is successfully prepared by a platinum-catalyzed hydrosilylation reaction. The hybrid film can be anchored with tweezers, showing a weak red emission with a quantum yield of 0.4 &#37; at room temperature, whose intensity drastically increases reaching a quantum yield of 6.7 &#37; in liquid nitrogen (77 K). This report represents the first example of porphycene-containing elastomeric films for potential application in various fields.

    © 2019 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH &amp; Co. KGaA, Weinheim The synthesis of difluoromethylated (CF 2 R) (R=H, alkyl/aryl, CO 2 R, etc.) compounds has received considerable attention in recent years. In this study, the cobalt(III)−carbon-mediated catalytic C−H difluoroacylation of unactivated arenes and heteroarenes using BrCF 2 CO 2 Et is reported. This catalytic cycle is based on a valence change of the cobalt catalyst, a naturally derived vitamin B 12 derivative, driven by controlled-potential electrolysis at −0.8 V vs. Ag/AgCl under visible-light irradiation in dimethyl sulfoxide. A broad substrate scope is demonstrated, and two compounds were characterized according to their X-ray crystal structures. Mechanistic studies showed that the reaction proceeds through a radical pathway mediated by homolytic cleavage of the cobalt(III)–carbon bond. A turnover number of more than 100 was observed, owing to the inherent stability of the vitamin B 12 framework. This naturally derived catalytic system has potential applications in medicinal chemistry and materials science.

    Swelling behavior of super-absorbent polymer gels
    We previously report development of a new class of ionic polymer gels having lipophilic ion-pairs that consist of a lipophilic tetraphenylborate anion and a quaternary ammonium cation with long alkyl chains. They swelled largely in the less polar solvents as &#039;super-absorbent&#039; ionic polymer gels. The driving force of the large swelling was osmotic pressure induced by dissociation of lipophilic ion-pairs in these solvents. Here we wish to present discontinuous volume phase transition of &#039;super-absorbent&#039; ionic polymer gels the by change of solvent polarity even in low dielectric media. Moreover, we investigated the effect of neutral comonomers to swelling behaviours in various organic solvents by changing the length of their alkyl chains. The ionic polymer gels with longer alkyl chain swelled in a large magnitude in the less polar solvents and those with shorter alkyl one did in more polar solvents.

    Molecular design of super-absorbent polymer gels
    Ionic polymer gels with the ability to absorb several hundreds times as much water as their dry weights have been used as &#039;super-absorbent polymers&#039; in wide range of biomedical and agricultural applications. However, in the low dielectric media (ε < 10), common ions form tightly bound ion-pairs or multiplet aggregates, and incompatibilities between the polymer chain and the solvents greatly diminish the swelling power. Here we report development of a new class of ionic polymer gels having lipophilic ion-pairs that consist of a lipophilic tetraphenylborate anion and a quaternary ammonium cation with long alkyl chains. They swelled largely in the less polar solvents such as tetrahydrofuran and chloroform as &#039;super-absorbent&#039; ionic polymer gels.

    Preparation and function of polymer gels with hydrophobic ion pairs
    Molecular design of polymer gels with high swelling properties in non polar solvents lays on compatibility of the polymer chain with oil. In this study, we demonstrate new polymer gels based on the hydrophobic ion pairs in the polymer chain. They provided the high swelling degrees in polar solvents. In the mixtures of water and acetonitrile, the polymer gels exhibited volume phase transition.

    ソフトクリスタルは、規則正しい結晶構造や周期構造を持つ安定な構造体でありながら、特定の弱い刺激で容易に構造変化や相転移を起こす。これは作成に困難を伴う準安定結晶の1種 であろう。本研究では、酸ー塩基複合体の中で部分的なプロトン移動を伴う塩―共結晶連続体が準安定結晶であることに着目した。酸と塩基のpKaデータベース先導型のソフトクリスタルの創製に取組み、新たな固体発光材料やセンサへの応用を実施する。
