The Smithian–Spathian transition during the Early Triassic was associated with significant environmental change, including global warming and oceanic anoxia. However, understanding ocean redox conditions in the pelagic Panthalassa during this period has been challenging due to a lack of well-dated sedimentary sections. Here, we provide new geochemical data for a Smithian–Spathian succession from an accretionary complex of central Japan (Inuyama, Aichi Prefecture), which was deposited in a low-latitude abyssal location. Conodont index fossils and carbon isotope stratigraphy reveal that the studied sections span the middle Smithian to lowermost Spathian (Momotaro-Jinja lower section), and the middle part of the Spathian (Momotaro-Jinja upper section). The Smithian–Spathian boundary is placed within a thick (∼40 cm), organic-rich, black claystone layer in the lower part of the section. We reconstruct water column redox conditions using pyrite framboid size ranges, Fe speciation and redox sensitive trace elements. During the middle to late Smithian, we find that the water column changed from oxic to ferruginous anoxic, with a transition to euxinic during the latest Smithian to earliest Spathian. During the middle Spathian, the water column fluctuated between oxic and euxinic conditions. We suggest that late Smithian seawater warming contributed to deoxygenation of Panthalassa whilst surface productivity and organic matter fluxes were low, leading to non-sulfidic ferruginous anoxia. Productivity then increased during the latest Smithian to earliest Spathian, thereby stimulating microbial sulphate reduction and inducing widespread ocean euxinia.

We propose a model-based approach to evaluate how effectively removing fouling mussels enhances the growth of cultivated oysters and reduces biodeposition, which could potentially lead to adverse effects on benthic environments in suspension farms. This approach links a simplified model estimating the budget of suspended particulate organic carbon (POC) in a farm with dynamic energy budget models that calculate the growth of cultivated oysters (Crassostrea gigas) and fouling mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis). By simulating the effect of mussel removal using hot-water treatment conducted in an oyster farm in northeastern Japan, we estimated that treatment at the 12th month after the start of cultivation would increase the soft body weight of oysters harvested at the 18th month by 11 % compared to the no-treatment case. Mussel removal was also predicted to reduce the bivalves' biodeposition to 19 %. Further estimations across assumed wide ranges of background POC concentrations (up to 1.5 mg-C L−1) and fouling-mussel density on cultivated oysters (up to 100 individuals per oyster) indicated that mussel removal more effectively enhanced oyster growth (by over approximately 5 %) in intermediate POC concentrations (0.02 to 0.2 mg L−1) and relatively higher mussel densities (>10 individuals). The percentage of reduced biodeposition due to mussel removal was higher in relatively lower POC concentrations. The proposed models can predict the benefits of removing fouling mussels in oyster aquaculture—namely, increased oyster production and reduced environmental impact—considering site-specific conditions. These models can help determine the necessity of costly biofouling controls.

Aoki N, Fujibayashi M, Sakamaki T, Kuba T. 2025. Application of a multi-wavelength excitation fluorometer and machine-learning algorithm for on-site measurement of long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids in lakes. Lake Reserv Manage. XXX–XXX. Long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids, such as eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), are important indicators of the nutritional quality of diets for aquatic animals. Seston contributes the primary basal food source; therefore, monitoring the contents (absolute amount per mass or volume) and levels (mass percent of total fatty acids) of these fatty acids in seston is a rational strategy for lake and reservoir management to maintain ecosystem health. However, conventional methods for EPA and DHA analyses in seston are labor-intensive and complex. This study aimed to develop a simple approach for field measurement of EPA and DHA using a multi-wavelength excitation fluorometer (MEX), which was originally designed to estimate the Chl-a concentration derived from each phytoplankton class based on excitation spectra. We proposed that a model could be developed by incorporating machine learning to predict EPA and DHA from excitation spectra. Water samples (151) were collected from the Hokuzan Reservoir in Saga Prefecture. The excitation spectra for each water sample were obtained on-site by MEX, and the EPA and DHA in the seston were analyzed in the laboratory using conventional methods. Based on these data, predictive models were developed using an extra-tree regressor, the one of machine learning algorithms. The model achieved average R2 values of 0.78, 0.74, 0.83, and 0.80 for EPA contents, DHA contents, EPA levels, and DHA levels, respectively. Consequently, using MEX enables novel and simple on-site measurements of EPA and DHA, further facilitating spatiotemporally dense data acquisition and potentially improving lake and reservoir ecosystem management.

Effective radioactive wastewater treatment technology is essential to ensure the sustainable development of nuclear energy. Here, the potassium ferrocyanide (HCF) intercalating with layered double hydroxide (LDH) (HCF@LDH) was successfully synthesized by coprecipitation method for selective cesium (Cs) removal from seawater. Characteristics of the adsorbent, and adsorption performance under different environmental conditions including Cs+ ion selectivity, and underlying adsorption mechanism were systematically investigated. The experimental results demonstrated that the adsorption capacity of HCF@LDH was 52.08 mg/g and it effectively removed 100 % of Cs+ from up to 200 mg/L Cs solution within 1 h under an optimal pH of 6.0–10.0. Moreover, the adsorbent displayed high selectivity towards Cs+ even in seawater and more than 90 % of Cs+ was removed from seawater and the highest cesium removal capacity from seawater was 44.64 mg/g. Both the Langmuir isotherm model (R2 = 0.997) and the pseudo-second-order kinetic model (R2 = 0.999) provided a good fit for the adsorption data signifying the adsorption process is homogeneous and formed monolayer through chemisorption. Furthermore, the reusability analysis exhibited this adsorbent was recycled and reused for at least 5 cycles without losing its original adsorption performance. The physicochemical analysis of the HCF@LDH proved that K4Fe (CN)6 successfully intercalated onto LDH and cation exchange between K+ and Cs+ played an important role in effective Cs adsorption. More specifically, the interstitial spaces of the hexacyanoferrate crystals facilitate the cation exchange process. The findings of this study demonstrate that HCF@LDH is a unique, highly effective, and selective adsorbent for Cs+ from complex seawater.

Phytoplankton are a crucial basal dietary source for consumers in lake ecosystems. The dietary quality of phytoplankton for zooplankton has been investigated in terms of molecules (e.g., fatty acids) and stoichiometry. However, little is known on the effects of algal mucilage on the dietary quality of phytoplankton. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effects of mucilage and fatty acid contents in phytoplankton on dietary quality. Zooplankton (Daphnia pulicaria) were reared with a single species of phytoplankton as the diet. Eighteen phytoplankton types were used. Algal dietary quality was evaluated based on the growth, reproduction, and survival rates of D. pulicaria for each dietary algal species during the feeding experiments. The results demonstrated that the dietary quality of phytoplankton with mucilage decreased significantly among the green algae. Green algae without mucilage had high omega-3 fatty acid contents, which increased its dietary quality. The quality of cyanobacteria diet was low for D. pulicaria regardless of the absence or presence of mucilage and fatty acid contents. The results show that the presence of mucilage may have reduced ingestion and digestion by zooplankton and indicate that this algal succession will have a negative impact on lake ecosystems.

Pacific oysters were sampled from 22 human-impacted sites in northeastern Japan to measure Cr, Cu, Zn, Pb, Cd, and As. The hazard quotient was slightly >1 for Cu and/or As at two sites, but <1 for all metal species and As at the other sites, indicating low human health risks. Oysters' Cu, Zn, and Pb contents were positively related to their concentrations in the sediment, while Cr and As were not. Oysters' Cu and Zn were negatively related to the inorganic nitrogen in seawater, while oysters' Pb and As showed positive relationships with the particulate organic carbon. These findings suggest that marine trophic status affects oysters' metal uptake differently among the metal species. Furthermore, oysters' Cr, Cu, Zn, and Pb contents were negatively related to their eicosapentaenoic acid content and condition index. Therefore, the nutritional conditions of oysters may influence their elimination or accumulation of these metals.

We experimentally evaluated the biofouling reduction by on-site heat treatment in enhancing oyster aquaculture production and mitigating its environmental impacts. Specifically, we compared oyster growth, settling flux of particulate organic matter (POM), and its oxygen consumption rate (OCR) between heat-treated (HT) and non-treated (N) sections within suspension oyster farms in a temperate bay. HT demonstrated a substantial reduction of 81–99% in fouling mussel biomass and approximately 20–30% increases in cultivated oysters’ growth and condition index. The settling flux of POM was 10–57% smaller in HT mainly due to the reduction in biodeposition from fouling mussels. However, OCR of settling POM at a unit mass was 6–62% higher in HT than in N; overall, the short-term oxygen consumption by settling POM did not significantly differ between HT and N. The increase in OCR of settling POM in HT may be attributable to the decrease in biodeposits from fouling organisms and increase in the relative contribution of fresh POM entering from unfarmed areas. Meanwhile, from the longer-term perspective, the substantial reduction in settling POM by the heat treatment lower the potential for oxygen consumption in the bottom layers over the half-year farming operation by 31%. In conclusion, on-site heat treatment is a simple tactic for controlling nutrient and POM flows at production sites, simultaneously enhancing oyster production and mitigating the local environmental impact of non-fed oyster aquaculture. Furthermore, this approach exemplifies an effective tactic to enhance the sustainability of primary food production processes.

Diatoms play the main role as primary producer, in tidal flat ecosystems, which have high biological production. Diatoms requires silicon as essential nutrient. Since diatoms in tidal flats mainly obtain dissolved silicon (DSi) loading from a river, it is important to accumurate information about DSi dynamics. In this study, we conducted fieldworks on the basin of Zuibaiji river and evaluated the DSi supply into Imazu tital flat(S0), DSi traping or supply by a reservoir and a sewage treatment plant(T1, S1, respectively). S0 and T1 were estimated as 10.4 ton, and 0.57 ton in December 2022, respectively. It is considered that diatom production and sedimentation to bottom layer in the reservoir was main factor for DSi traping. S1 was also estimated that 2.7 ton of DSi were supplied in December 2022. It is indicated that the reservoirs and the sewage treatment plants have non-regligible influence to DSi supply into tital flats.

Saito et al., 2023, Ear. Lake eutrophication is associated with cyanobacterial blooms. The pennate diatom Nitzschia palea (N. palea) inhibits the growth of the cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa (M. aeruginosa); therefore, increasing the relative abundance of N. palea may contribute to the inhibition of Microcystis blooms. Several studies have demonstrated that blue light irradiation promotes diatom growth and inhibits cyanobacterial growth. In this study, we evaluated the effects of blue light irradiation on N. palea and M. aeruginosa abundance. Monocultures and co-cultures of N. palea and M. aeruginosa were exposed to blue light and fluorescent light at 32 μmol photons m^-2 s^-1. The relative abundance of N. palea under fluorescent light decreased gradually, whereas the abundance under blue light was relatively higher (approximately 74% and 98% under fluorescent light and blue light, respectively, at the end of the experiment). The inhibition efficiency of blue light on the growth rate of M. aeruginosa was related to the light intensity. The optimal light intensity was considered 20 μmol photons m^-2 s^-1 based on the inhibition efficiency of 100%. Blue light irradiation can be used to increase the abundance of N. palea to control Microcystis blooms.

Emplacement of the Central Atlantic Magmatic Province (CAMP) is thought to have triggered global environmental changes and the end-Triassic mass extinction (ETE). However, the mechanisms linking volcanism and environmental change are unclear. Here we provide new insight into these linkages by measuring the abundance of both sedimentary five- to six-ring polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and mercury from strata deposited in shallow marine environments across the ETE at the GSSP Kuhjoch section in Austria and St. Audrie's Bay section in the UK. To contextualize these data, we report results from laboratory experiments measuring the production of SO2 and CO2 during heating of limestone and mudstone. ETE sediments record parallel enrichments of mercury and five- to six-ring PAHs, which could have been produced by intrusive magma (mainly sills) and lava flows during the early stage of the CAMP emplacement; these data indicate a direct link between massive gas emission from sill contact metamorphism and the ETE. The fraction of coronene – a highly condensed six-ring PAH that requires greater energy to form compared to smaller PAHs – accumulated in the sediments during these initial volcanic events is low, and it coincides with the terrestrial plant turnover and initial marine extinction. Coronene increases to medium values coinciding with the final marine extinction level. Our heating experiments of typical carbonate and mudstone materials show that relatively low temperature heating (>350 °C) by sills releases massive amounts of SO2 on a 100 yr time scale, whereas higher temperature heating (500–600 °C) forms more CO2 on the same time scale. The combination of our end-Triassic geochemical data and laboratory results implies that low heating by sills caused SO2-dominated gas emission to the stratosphere and low CO2 emission, inducing global cooling that could have precipitated the mass extinction. The subsequent increase in coronene content indicates higher volcanic temperature that would have volatilized CO2 rich gas; the consequence was a switch to greater CO2 release and long-term (>105 yr) global warming.

Food web studies rely heavily on the use of traditional gut content analysis or the fairly popular stable isotope analysis rather than fatty acid analysis (FAA) despite its straightforward process, and ability to identify and characterize more diverse trophic pathways. In this study, we employed fatty acid (FA) biomarkers as a preliminary attempt to trace and characterize trophic pathways in food webs of four tropical lakes of volcanic origin in Luzon Island, Philippines - three clustered maar lakes (Yambo, Pandin and Calibato) and a large caldera lake (Taal). These lakes have a long history of human disturbance but limited ecological data. Knowledge of basal food sources and existing trophic dynamics of organisms are generally non-existent. Particulate organic matter (POM), zooplankton, and fish species were collected in August 2019 from the study lakes as representative of three trophic guilds. Non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) and principal component analysis (PCA) were conducted to analyse FA profiles and characterize trophic relationships between representative organisms. For the POM, within lakes comparison of taxon-specific FA profiles showed a significant difference between the surface and near bottom depths, with the former dominated by photoautorophs and the latter by chemotrophs, suggesting the ability of FAA to effectively delineate between micro-organisms. Between lakes comparison also showed significant difference between the caldera and maar lakes, with the latter containing higher composition of bacterial FA, reminiscent of the considerably smaller lakes’ response to the impact of unmitigated organic loadings from anthropogenic activities. Taken together with the primary consumers’ FA profiles, analysis confirmed the ability of FAA to discriminate between FA profile sources. PCA explained >70% of the variance in the FA compositions for three trophic guilds in the two deepest lakes, which delineated both zooplankton and fish species food selectivity in each lake, alluding to FAA’s capacity to characterize dietary reliance of various species in an environment with numerous food sources. Although certain limitations were encountered, such as the specificity of the sampling depths for POM, and the small sample size of the representative species of the third trophic level, this study demonstrated the effectiveness of FAA as a powerful ecological tool for disentangling intricate lake food webs comprising various food sources. Overall, this study provided baseline information on basal food sources and trophic pathways of representative organisms from four tropical lakes. Taken together, FAA studies have wide application in understanding food webs, including anthropogenically-threatened lake ecosystems.

This study is investigated to the competition between cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa and diatom Nitzschia palea that can increase their cell number in a favorable environment for the occurrence of water bloom. We particularly focused on the temperature and pH effects on the inhibition effects of M. aeruginosa by N. palea. The maximum cell yield of M. aeruginosa reduced by approximately 50 % in the co-culture with N. palea at 15–30 ℃ as compared to that in the monoculture. N. palea also reduced the maximum cell yield of M. aeruginosa by 33, 54 and 66 % at pH 7.0, 8.0 and 9.0, respectively. N. palea reduced M. aeruginosa growth in the culture condition where water bloom is likely to occur. However, M. aeruginosa remained the dominant species in co-culture at 20–30 ℃ or pH 7.0–8.0. It is necessary to artificially increase the relative abundance of N. palea for enhancing the inhibition effect of M. aeruginosa.

Researchers are looking to find an effective adsorbent for the Cs (cesium) removal from wastewater or natural environment. Among the different adsorbents, functional activated carbon (AC) demonstrated a significant result for Cs removal. However, chemical treatment on AC is always difficult and environmentally unfriendly. Therefore, plasma treatment on AC to make it functionalized is one of the alternative choices.
In this study, AC was treated with plasma under oxygen atmosphere by changing effect of its material, specific surface area and particle size, and also distance between electrodes of plasma processor, followed by Cs adsorption batch test. This study concludes that the adsorbent material and particle size, and also distance between electrodes and voltage are critical parameters in plasma treatment for utilizing Cs adsorption and that the specific surface area of the sample has no effect on the amount of Cs adsorption.

    1) Seasonal cycles of the chemical composition of particulate organic matter (POM) in Shizugawa Bay, and spatial distribution characteristics from the inner bay to the mouth of the bay, were elucidated. The fluxes and chemical composition of POM sinking to the bottom layer in the bay area and within aquaculture facilities were also clarified. 2) The effects of removing fouling organisms on cultivated oysters’ growth and POM settling flux were quantified through field experiments. Additionally, parameters for the individual growth model of cultured oysters were determined based on surveys and experimental results in the bay. Using these models, changes in the effectiveness of attached organism removal according to variations in feed concentration and fouling biomass were revealed. 3) A mathematical optimization algorithm was developed to explore operation cycles for maximizing oyster aquaculture production.
