We propose a model-based approach to evaluate how effectively removing fouling mussels enhances the growth of cultivated oysters and reduces biodeposition, which could potentially lead to adverse effects on benthic environments in suspension farms. This approach links a simplified model estimating the budget of suspended particulate organic carbon (POC) in a farm with dynamic energy budget models that calculate the growth of cultivated oysters (Crassostrea gigas) and fouling mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis). By simulating the effect of mussel removal using hot-water treatment conducted in an oyster farm in northeastern Japan, we estimated that treatment at the 12th month after the start of cultivation would increase the soft body weight of oysters harvested at the 18th month by 11 % compared to the no-treatment case. Mussel removal was also predicted to reduce the bivalves' biodeposition to 19 %. Further estimations across assumed wide ranges of background POC concentrations (up to 1.5 mg-C L−1) and fouling-mussel density on cultivated oysters (up to 100 individuals per oyster) indicated that mussel removal more effectively enhanced oyster growth (by over approximately 5 %) in intermediate POC concentrations (0.02 to 0.2 mg L−1) and relatively higher mussel densities (>10 individuals). The percentage of reduced biodeposition due to mussel removal was higher in relatively lower POC concentrations. The proposed models can predict the benefits of removing fouling mussels in oyster aquaculture—namely, increased oyster production and reduced environmental impact—considering site-specific conditions. These models can help determine the necessity of costly biofouling controls.

Effective radioactive wastewater treatment technology is essential to ensure the sustainable development of nuclear energy. Here, the potassium ferrocyanide (HCF) intercalating with layered double hydroxide (LDH) (HCF@LDH) was successfully synthesized by coprecipitation method for selective cesium (Cs) removal from seawater. Characteristics of the adsorbent, and adsorption performance under different environmental conditions including Cs+ ion selectivity, and underlying adsorption mechanism were systematically investigated. The experimental results demonstrated that the adsorption capacity of HCF@LDH was 52.08 mg/g and it effectively removed 100 % of Cs+ from up to 200 mg/L Cs solution within 1 h under an optimal pH of 6.0–10.0. Moreover, the adsorbent displayed high selectivity towards Cs+ even in seawater and more than 90 % of Cs+ was removed from seawater and the highest cesium removal capacity from seawater was 44.64 mg/g. Both the Langmuir isotherm model (R2 = 0.997) and the pseudo-second-order kinetic model (R2 = 0.999) provided a good fit for the adsorption data signifying the adsorption process is homogeneous and formed monolayer through chemisorption. Furthermore, the reusability analysis exhibited this adsorbent was recycled and reused for at least 5 cycles without losing its original adsorption performance. The physicochemical analysis of the HCF@LDH proved that K4Fe (CN)6 successfully intercalated onto LDH and cation exchange between K+ and Cs+ played an important role in effective Cs adsorption. More specifically, the interstitial spaces of the hexacyanoferrate crystals facilitate the cation exchange process. The findings of this study demonstrate that HCF@LDH is a unique, highly effective, and selective adsorbent for Cs+ from complex seawater.

  • Presence of mucilage and low omega-3 fatty acid contents in phytoplankton impair the quality of phytoplankton diet for zooplankton

Phytoplankton are a crucial basal dietary source for consumers in lake ecosystems. The dietary quality of phytoplankton for zooplankton has been investigated in terms of molecules (e.g., fatty acids) and stoichiometry. However, little is known on the effects of algal mucilage on the dietary quality of phytoplankton. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effects of mucilage and fatty acid contents in phytoplankton on dietary quality. Zooplankton (Daphnia pulicaria) were reared with a single species of phytoplankton as the diet. Eighteen phytoplankton types were used. Algal dietary quality was evaluated based on the growth, reproduction, and survival rates of D. pulicaria for each dietary algal species during the feeding experiments. The results demonstrated that the dietary quality of phytoplankton with mucilage decreased significantly among the green algae. Green algae without mucilage had high omega-3 fatty acid contents, which increased its dietary quality. The quality of cyanobacteria diet was low for D. pulicaria regardless of the absence or presence of mucilage and fatty acid contents. The results show that the presence of mucilage may have reduced ingestion and digestion by zooplankton and indicate that this algal succession will have a negative impact on lake ecosystems.

Pacific oysters were sampled from 22 human-impacted sites in northeastern Japan to measure Cr, Cu, Zn, Pb, Cd, and As. The hazard quotient was slightly >1 for Cu and/or As at two sites, but <1 for all metal species and As at the other sites, indicating low human health risks. Oysters' Cu, Zn, and Pb contents were positively related to their concentrations in the sediment, while Cr and As were not. Oysters' Cu and Zn were negatively related to the inorganic nitrogen in seawater, while oysters' Pb and As showed positive relationships with the particulate organic carbon. These findings suggest that marine trophic status affects oysters' metal uptake differently among the metal species. Furthermore, oysters' Cr, Cu, Zn, and Pb contents were negatively related to their eicosapentaenoic acid content and condition index. Therefore, the nutritional conditions of oysters may influence their elimination or accumulation of these metals.

Researchers are looking to find an effective adsorbent for the Cs (cesium) removal from wastewater or natural environment. Among the different adsorbents, functional activated carbon (AC) demonstrated a significant result for Cs removal. However, chemical treatment on AC is always difficult and environmentally unfriendly. Therefore, plasma treatment on AC to make it functionalized is one of the alternative choices.
In this study, AC was treated with plasma under oxygen atmosphere by changing effect of its material, specific surface area and particle size, and also distance between electrodes of plasma processor, followed by Cs adsorption batch test. This study concludes that the adsorbent material and particle size, and also distance between electrodes and voltage are critical parameters in plasma treatment for utilizing Cs adsorption and that the specific surface area of the sample has no effect on the amount of Cs adsorption.
