     More details

    A floating offshore wind turbine platform supporting a 2MW downwind-type turbine was successfully installed offshore of Kabashima Island, Goto city, Nagasaki prefecture, Japan on October 18, 2013. It has been operating since October 28, 2013 as the first grid-connected multi-megawatt floating wind turbine in Japan. The spar platform has a unique feature, that is, the upper part of the spar is made of steel (as usual) but the lower part is made of precast prestressed concrete (PC). Such a configuration is referred to as hybrid-spar. In this paper, the design methodology of the hybrid spar is presented - including environmental design conditions, DLCs (Design Load Cases), dynamic analysis, fatigue analysis, etc. Also, the installation procedure is presented briefly.

    An Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) floating plant which is converted from a pre-owned ship may be able to reduce the cost, and thus such a concept has been developed targeting for 100MW-NET power plant. The distinction of the plantship is the attachment of the Cold Water Pipe (CWP) which has 800m length and a diameter of 12m. For discussion of the position keeping system and the CWP, coupled behavior between the plantship and the CWP is analyzed in this study. An analysis model of the plantship is designed from KVLCC2M and the CWP is assumed as made of FRP. The environmental conditions for Indonesia seas are assumed for the extreme analysis. A spread mooring system is considered preferable as a position keeping system. Preliminary designs by several combinations of flexible joint, clump weight, taut mooring system and catenary mooring system are compared on their dynamic behavior by using OrcaFlex. Two kinds of models which are calculated by direct coupled system and only CWP under the forced oscillation obtained by the moored ship without CWP are compared in order to examine those interactions. In addition, a simplified model is proposed, in such a way that comprehend the character of the coupled behavior. As a result of the comparison of these models, the simplified model is generally consistent with the numerical simulation. Also it is found that the interaction is significant and thus should not be ignored around the resonant frequency of the CWP and the slowly-varying motion of the plantship.

    Ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC) is a system that produces clean energy from the temperature differences in the ocean. Its power production is very stable and is expected to be implemented as a base-load power supply, despite using a natural energy source. In addition, this energy source would provide an attractive integration with other industries such as aquaculture with ocean nutrient enhancement, desalination, deep seawater cooling, and hydrogen production. Currently, a floating OTEC plant is in development toward a commercial-scale deployment. The floating plant is configured with a floating platform, mooring system, seawater intake pipe/inlet, and discharge pipe/duct. In particular, a cold water pipe (CWP) is the most challenging component in a commercial-scale OTEC. For a 100 MW-scale CWP, the length is 600–1000 m, and the diameter is over 10 m, designed to transport deep seawater at a flow rate of approximately 200 m3/s. Due to its size, there is a strong dynamic coupling between the floating platform and the mooring system, requiring a coupled analysis and an integrated design approach with other components. Meanwhile, one of the authors of this paper has proposed a 100 MW-net OTEC plantship for Indonesia, which utilizes a converted pre-owned ship to reduce capital costs. In this paper, a coupled dynamic analysis is performed for the preliminary design of the mooring system and CWP, along with a sensitivity analysis of the dynamic responses of the floating platform and CWP to design parameters. The results are used to discuss the dynamic characteristics and design methods for an OTEC floating plant, to improve reliability and further develop this floating structure concept.

    For the design of floating offshore wind turbines (FOWTs), numerical simulations for a large number of design load cases (DLCs) are required. Now, several numerical tools have been developed and available, such as Bladed and OrcaFlex; however, the number of licenses may limit the efficiency of the analysis. In this paper, we report on the latest progress of the development of a simulation tool for FOWTs using MBDyn. MBDyn is an open-source software of multibody dynamics. We have developed several user-defined modules that extend MBDyn to be used for dynamic analysis of FOWTs. Using this tool, we will be able to run many simulations simultaneously without a limit of the number of software licenses. Several numerical examples will be given as comparison with the results obtained by ADAMS.

    Ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC) is a process of generating electricity by exploiting the temperature difference between warm surface seawater and cold deep seawater. Due to the high static and dynamic pressures that are caused by seawater circulation, the stiffened panel that constitutes a seawater tank may undergo a reduction in ultimate strength. The current paper investigates the design of stiffening systems for OTEC seawater tanks by examining the effects of stiffening parameters such as stiffener sizes and span-over-bay ratio for the applied combined loadings of lateral and transverse pressure by fluid motion and axial compression due to global bending moment. The ultimate strength calculation was conducted by using the non-linear finite element method via the commercial software known as ABAQUS. The stress and deformation distribution due to pressure loads was computed in the first step and then brought to the second step, in which the axial compression was applied. The effects of pressure on the ultimate strength of the stiffener were investigated for representative stiffened panels, and the significance of the stiffener parameters was assessed by using the sensitivity analysis method. As a result, the ultimate strength was reduced by approximately 1.5% for the span-over-bay ratio of 3 and by 7% for the span-over-bay ratio of 6.

    Dynamic stability due to internal axial flow is a considerable problem for a pipe conveying fluid such as deep seawater intaking for an Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) plant. However, there has been much ambiguity about its dynamics, and this raises a question about whether such an aspirating pipe submerged in water flutters or not. Therefore, the objective of this paper is to provide an experiment to take a new look at the dynamics of pipe aspirating fluid (water). The experimental apparatus is constructed to eliminate expected disturbances, and we measure free damped vibrations of a submerged 4 m length pipe with internal flow. As a result, we observe the nonlinear and non-planar behavior, however, the pipe converges to the zero point and remains stable at a maximum velocity of 1.66 m/s. Subsequently, we review existing theoretical models, and present a comparison with the results from the tank experiment. In addition, we provide a new model of the inlet flow field, which plays an important role on stability, considering the flow separation and jet formed inside of the pipe entrance. This equation is solved by FEM for time integration and eigenvalue analysis, and the results seem to reproduce the experimental natural period and amplitude of the free vibration with internal flow. The model also suggests that an aspirating pipe submerged in water does not flutter up to the maximum flow velocity attainable in the experiment.

    <p>In this paper, we describe simulation of the dynamic response of a 2-MW spar type floating offshore wind turbine (FOWT) during power production in actual sea area. Accurate estimation of the dynamic response of FOWTs are essential for the design and development of FOWTs to ensure their safety and reliability. Therefore, this paper compares and validates the simulated and measured dynamic response of FOWTs during power production using Adams with SparDyn, which has already shown good agreement with measured values under a typhoon environment. Five simulation cases were selected from low to high wind speed range during power production. Numerical simulations were performed using time series data of wind speed, wind direction, wave height, wave direction, current speed and current direction obtained during power production. Comparisons have shown reasonably good agreement between the simulated and the measured values except yaw motion.</p>

    <p>In the construction of floating offshore wind turbines in Japan, floating crane ships have been used. However, they are prone to swaying due to waves and wind, so there is a big risk especially when working in the open sea. In addition, Japan has little experience in the construction of offshore wind power generation, and it is not possible to ensure safety based on empirical rules alone. From these facts, it is considered that there is a high need for preliminary examination of construction by simulation in order to reduce risks during construction. Also, standard method for dynamic simulation of marine operations has not yet been established. Thus, in this paper, we attempt to develop safety evaluation method based on dynamic simulation of marine operations using a floating crane. As a first step, we measured motion of a nacelle during construction of a 2.1 MW spar-type floating offshore wind turbine. Then, we compared the motion with numerical simulation by OrcaFlex.</p>

    A cold water intaking pipe/riser is an important component of a floating Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) plant. Its dynamics subject to the large intake flow rate of seawater and motion excitation from a platform have not been definitively understood. This study experimentally investigates the dynamics with two experimental setups. The first setup uses a controllable pump and 4 m long pipe to investigate instability. The second setup uses a high capacity pump to investigate instability and forced vibration subject to top harmonic excitation. The results are compared with an analytical model considering the inlet flow effect. The analytical model predicts that a water intake pipe does not lose stability at any high flow velocity. The experiment newly confirmed that the pipe keeps stable up to 5.5 m/s which is the maximum velocity attainable in this experiment. The experiment and analytical model also highlight that a high internal flow velocity significantly increases the amplitude of inline vibration. Furthermore, the experiment also takes a new look on the dynamics such as long-period vibration and transverse vibration.

    A floating Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) plant requires a large-diameter Cold Water Pipe (CWP) to be attached to a floating structure. For the design of the mooring system and the CWP, a coupled analysis of a floating body, mooring system and CWP should be employed due to the huge mass of the internal fluid in the CWP. The aim of this paper is to construct a simplified coupled response model to facilitate the preliminary stage of the design. The equations of equilibrium and motion are derived based on modeling as a two-dimensional floating body and an elastic pendulum. In order to verify the applicability for a practical design and limitation of the present model, a 100 MW ship-shaped platform, a spread mooring system and a CWP with an inner diameter of 12 m and a length of 800 m are configured. The results of the extreme analysis in the frequency domain with equivalent linearization of drag force by using the present model agree well with the time domain coupled analysis using OrcaFlex. Subsequently, the influence of the design parameters for CWP to the coupled responses is also clarified by a parametric study combining the bending stiffness, the linear density and the boundary conditions. The proposed model will facilitate the preliminary study with a large number of design trials, and a comprehension of the results of numerical simulations and model experiments.

    An OTEC CWP can be modelled as a submerged freehanging pipe conveying fluid. The large amount of the required transported deep seawater might cause catastrophic failure of the pipe due to Centrifugal and Coriolis forces driven by the Internal Flow Effect (IEF). To predict the critical velocity, this paper analyzes the stability of the pipe using a Finite Element Method. At the first step, the general motion equation of the pipe is derived and for each term of the equation, its potential energy equation is represented. Using Hermite shape functions, the local matrixes of each element can be obtained based on virtual displacement principle. Flow field and flow direction change at the inlet is considered at the bottom-end of the pipe as a local boundary condition. After the global matrixes of the system are produced, the global boundary conditions are imposed. Finally, the system is solved using the Newmark time-scheme method. The result are then compared to the previous published works of a small scale model. After being verified, the developed FEM will be used to analyze the full-scale model of the OTEC CWP. The result shows that the critical velocity is around 4.5-4.8 m/s.

    A commercial-scale Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) floating plant will be attached a large diameter Cold Water Pipe (CWP). There are concerns about unstable vibration and changes in the dynamic characteristic due to too large mass flow rate. Since the vibration may interfere development of larger capacity plant, comprehending the phenomena have generated considerable interest. The main objective of this study is to confirm whether the theory that describes the vibration of submerged fluid-conveying pipe reproduces the real phenomena through a tank experiment. We construct the experiment eliminated possible disturbances, and the free damping vibration of polycarbonate pipe of 4 m length is measured during water intake. In order to compare the experimental pipe and theoretical models, the damping characteristics are identified from the results without internal flow. As a result of the comparison, although the theoretical model using the inlet end condition reproduces basically reproduced the experiment, we observe a three dimensional nonlinear behavior that could not be predicted by the theory. We believe that this experiment will serve to improve the theories.

    Offshore wind technical potential has been shown to be approximately four times higher in deeper water areas suitable for floating offshore wind turbines (FOWTs) than in shallower water areas suitable for bottomfixed offshore wind turbine. Particularly in Asia and North America, where the technological potential for floating offshore wind turbines is high, the installation of FOWTs is highly desired in these areas to further reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Because these areas are subject to typhoons and hurricanes, FOWT installations require accurate simulations of both power production and extreme environmental conditions. Therefore, in this paper, we compare the simulated and measured values in the power production using Adams with SparDyn, which has already shown good agreement with the measured values in the typhoon environment and validate the simulation tool.

    Among the issues of floating offshore wind turbines are the platform-pitching vibrations generated by blade pitch angle motions of the variable speed control. Control of blade pitch angle based on the platform-pitching motion (floating platform vibration control) can suppress these vibrations. This study investigates the impact of floating platform vibration control on variable speed control and the generator torque control, which control interferences cause the fluctuation of generator speed and platform-pitching angle at the transition region between below and above rated operating conditions. This study also proposes a new control to reduce the impact; in this method, the lower limit of generator torque is adjusted linearly depending on the nacelle wind speed, and the conventional feedback control for the generator torque mainly adjusts the generator torque. Simulation and demonstration results using a full-scale spar-type FOWT showed that the proposed method can stabalize suppress the fluctuations of generator speed, platform-pitching angle, and power at the transition region.

    Long-term operation of mooring systems is one of the challenging issues of floating structures such as floating offshore wind turbines. The nondestructive testing and condition monitoring techniques can achieve a rational operation by predicting the degradation. However, as contrasted with fatigue only few studies on the effect of nonuniform volume loss of mooring chain links due to wear can be found because of difficulties to estimate wear amounts quantitatively. This chapter introduces the quantitative interlink wear estimation method by applying it to a spar-type floating structure and utilizing the observations. The method is presented which consists of the material test, derivation of an interlink wear estimation formula with Finite element analysis, and calculation of mooring chain response with coupled dynamic analysis. Additionally, by using a 3-D rigid-body link model, it was found that the interlink wear amount can be calculated closer to the chain diameter measurements.

    浮体式洋上風力発電は、沿岸から水深が急に深くなるわが国において洋上風力発電を大規模に導入する上で、なくてはならない技術です。10MWを超えるような超大型風車を搭載する次世代浮体式洋上風力発電施設の設計においては、極めて多くの荷重ケースに対する設計計算が必要になりますが、現状でこれに対応できるツールが存在しません。そこで、本研究では、これに対応できる設計ツールを開発することを目的としています。
