The Higashi Kashiwazaki gas field in the southwestern Niigata is the first-ever Carbon dioxide capture utilization and Storage (CCUS) site for depleted volcanic gas reservoir in Japan, well known as Miocene subaqueous volcanic rocks so called ‘Green Tuff’. In order to optimize the reservoir models for testing CO2 injection behavior, reservoir characterization was revisited to simplify the lithofacies classification that is predictable with the limited well data and also covers petrological and petrophysical variations. Four lithofacies were defined by XRD/XRF-based mineralogical and petrological analyses on the drill cutting samples, along with geological concept based on the outcrop analogues in Niigata and Fukushima area; Felsic Lava (Lv), Felsic Breccia/Auto-Brecciated Lava (Br), Resedimented Hyaloclastite/Tuff (Tf) and Mafic Lava/Tuff facies (Maf). Maf facies can be clearly distinguished from other felsic lithofacies by low SiO2 content. Among the felsic facies, Lv and Br facies are distinguished from the Tuff facies by their relatively higher K2O content. Br facies is higher in CaO content or calcite than Lv facies. According to petrophysical properties evaluated by conventional wireline log data, Maf facies is identi ed by low gamma ray value. Other felsic facies can be recognized by the combination of multiple log responses, that is, Lv facies shows high resistivity and density with low neutron porosity, and Br facies represents high resistivity and neutron porosity and low density. These analytical results proposed in this study allow us to provide better estimates of vertical and lateral distribution in each lithofacies throughout the entire reservoir interval, suggesting a highly effective procedure for volcanic reservoir characterization even if there is limited availability in core sample and logging data.

A quantitative outcrop survey was conducted in three coastal areas in Japan to estimate the relationship between the surface morphology and visual information of well-exposed rocks using photogrammetry of drone flyovers. We generated three-dimensional digital outcrop models in the study areas to produce the hue, saturation, value (HSV) color space images and digital elevation model (DEM) data, together with terrain ruggedness index (TRI) computed from the DEM data. Using the data, we examined whether our machine learning model (MLM) could predict the millimeter-scale surface ruggedness of the given rock outcrop. In the prediction, one of the three studied outcrops was selected for the training data, and various patterns of choices from available georeferenced visual information (i.e., coordinates, H, S, V) and TRI data in the other study areas were used as explanatory variables and response variables, respectively. The MLM with H, S, and V as explanatory variables using the 3σ method for outlier removal showed the smallest Root Mean Square Error of 0.51 × 10−3. The results revealed that our MLM provided reasonable quantitative predictions of surface ruggedness. Additionally, our predictions worked well even in the presence of cast shadows on the studied outcrops, suggesting that the shadow effects were likely negligible. Our findings emphasize that the HSV color space data acquired by drone-flyover photogrammetry alone can quantitatively predict the millimeter-scale surface ruggedness of outcrops, facilitating the acquisition of high-resolution surface morphology data without DEMs.

The South Makassar Strait Basin (SMSB) is identified as potential petroleum system based on the presence of oil-seep in the offshore (Hidayat et al., 2012). This indicates that hydrocarbons have been generated and migrated in the deep subsurface. However, the distribution of thermally matured source rock to generate hydrocarbon is still unclear. This study aims to evaluate thermal history of the SMSB for better understanding possible source rock maturity and hydrocarbon charge. The Oligocene reservoir, the main target of the SMBS consists of carbonate rocks that developed and accumulated on the tilted fault blocks unconformably overlain by Pliocene deepwater shale. 1D basin modelling was carried out for the Sultan-1 well to understand burial and thermal history in the Cenozoic sediments.

Warm and saline Mediterranean overflow today is an important driver of thermohaline circulation in the North Atlantic. In the latest Miocene, Mediterranean salinity varied dramatically as the Messinian salt giant formed. The precipitation of a ~1.5 km thick evaporite layer across the Mediterranean seafloor requires substantial changes both to the geometry of the Atlantic-Mediterranean gateway and the nature of exchange between the two basins. This salinity crisis was the consequence of on-going Africa-Eurasia collision, which formed, narrowed, and ultimately closed the two ancestral marine connections that pre-date the Gibraltar Strait. One of these connections is now preserved on land in southern Spain, the other in northern Morocco. Both the initiation of Mediterranean overflow, variations in its size and salinity, and the establishment of the present-day overflow pattern in the early Pliocene are likely to have impacted thermohaline circulation, climatic change and deep water sedimentation during the late Miocene and Pliocene. IMMAGE (Investigating Miocene Mediterranean-Atlantic Gateway Exchange) is a land-2-sea drilling project designed to recover a complete record of Late Miocene-Pliocene exchange (8-4Ma) offshore with International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) in both the Atlantic and Mediterranean and onshore with International Continental Scientific Drilling Program (ICDP) in Morocco and Spain. IODP Expedition 401 is the first element of the land-2-sea drilling to take place. At the time of abstract submission, Expedition 401 is at sea (December 2023-February 2024) in the process of recovering these critical records. We propose to present an overview of the sediments recovered during the expedition and initial shipboard analytical results.

Educational Activities

First described in 1827, the forceful injection of sand into finer grained strata, failed to attract more than casual interest in the geological community until the fortuitous recognition of sandstone intrusions as hydrocarbon reservoirs on the UKCS in the early 1990’s. Several similar fortuitous discoveries were made adjacent to Harding field, but the first deliberate exploration of a sand injection complex did not take place until 2003-4, when Volund field was discovered (NCS). In the early 1990’s to early 2000’s, the significance of sandstone intrusions in several oil fields in development became apparent and changed field development strategy with respect to incremental reserves and their distribution and enhancing recovery by optimising well-placement. In the North Sea more than 11 bn bbls oil are known to occur in, or are associated with, sand injection complexes; in the North Sea 2 bn bbls oil occur in reservoirs where sandstone intrusions predominate.
Sandstone intrusions have varying levels of discordance with bedding, which contributes significantly to the ease of differentiating sandstone intrusions from depositional sandstones on seismic data. Individual sandstone intrusions that form significant reservoir volumes (10’s m thick) often occur above, within and below biozones. Characteristics of the external geometry of sandstone intrusions includes steps, bifurcation, upward erosion of intrusion margins, preservation of fracture margins, and partial disintegration of host strata. These combine to form composite sedimentary intrusions, forming saucer-shaped intrusions, wings, sill complexes and dyke swarms, which form regionally in the subsurface and outcrop, over scales of 1000’s km2 and often >1km thick.
Examples of large sandstone intrusions from the subsurface will be shown together with similar scale outcrop examples. Comparison of these data will be used to illustrate the limitations of seismic imaging when defining the gross volume, N/G (storage capacity and reservoir quality), presence of sub-seismic reservoir, lateral and vertical connectivity and fluid contacts. Core-scale characteristics are sometimes diagnostic of sandstone intrusions and occur in core samples and outcrop, several of which record the hydrofracture of host mudstone. Angular fractures on grain surfaces and intra-crystalline micro-fracture networks are diagnostic of sandstone intrusions. Grain textures record multiple high-velocity inter-granular collisions during sand injection in which turbulent flow prevails in dilute granular suspensions.
Pore-fluid pressure (Pf) is requisite to the formation of sand injection complexes such that Pf exceeds the fracture gradient and ultimately the lithostatic gradient + the tensile strength of the seal. Absolute Pf is less critical than the contrast between the hydrostatic and lithostatic gradients, a contrast that is least during shallow burial sandstone intrusions (assuming a linear hydrostatic gradient). When the seal fails, hydrofractures form and propagate toward a free surface. Initially the hydrofractures are fluid filled but as they propagate fluid velocity increases, which when it exceeds the minimum fluidisation velocity for sand begins to entrain fine to medium grained grains, which form sandstone intrusions in some of the hydrofractures. There are several mechanisms by which Pf €i0can create overpressure, but formation of giant injection complexes requires large volumes of fluid, likely to be derived by regional burial processes and probably most likely associated with chemical diagenesis.
