    It remains unclear why type-II antiferromagnetic order with a propagation vector along a trigonal axis and a tetragonal Jahn–Teller deformation coexist in a low-temperature phase of CoO. Nanocrystals generally have a lower magnetic transition temperature but crystal size reduction does not affect structural transition locally induced by a crystal field. On this basis, we investigated the magnetic and structural properties of CoO nanocrystals. Both transition temperatures were equally reduced in nanocrystals, which indicates that magnetic order triggers the tetragonal deformation. This observation is consistent with a model that the Jahn–Teller deformation is assisted by spin–orbit energy splitting of t2g electrons in the high-spin Co2+ ion, proposed by Kugel and Khomskii.

    To examine the electronic density of state (DOS) in Kondo lattice (KL) system CeRu2Si2, we performed a point contact spectroscopy (PCS) investigation. At low temperatures, PCS spectra exhibit an asymmetric dip structure at zero-bias voltage, which can be reproduced by a theoretical model on electron tunneling spectra between a probe tip and localized moments. Moreover, below approximately 30 K, the dip depth increases logarithmically as the temperature decreases. These results indicate that the asymmetric dip structure originates from the Kondo resonance. Additionally, based on our estimate of the electron tunneling probability into a localized 4 f orbital, we propose that PCS can be used to study the evolution of the electronic DOS in KL systems.

    Electronic properties of a new ternary f-electron system RPt3Al5 (R: rare earth elements) have been investigated. RPt3Al5 crystalizes in the CePt3Al5-type orthorhombic structure where R atoms form 1-dimensional chains along the b-axis. LaPt3Al5 shows superconductivity below 0.4 K, while others show magnetic ordering. CePt3Al5 orders antiferromagnetically below TN = 1.2 K with spontaneous moment and shows successive magnetic transition at Tm = 0.9 K. The nearly divalent antiferromagnet EuPt3Al5 indicates an unusual valence cross-over behavior into the nearly trivalent state under high pressure of 9 GPa. It is also found that most of RPt3Al5 orders antiferromagnetically and, in some cases, shows characteristic features in magnetic suscep- tibility, where the broad maximum appears slightly above TN, reecting the low-dimensional nature.

    We studied the topological features in Kondo insulator SmB_6 by point-contact Andreev reflection spectroscopy with a Nb probe tip. Below the superconducting transition of Nb, the spectra exhibited a narrow dip at around zero bias superposed on a broad asymmetric background caused by the Kondo resonance. The contact-size dependence of the spectra revealed that the width of the resonance is suppressed near the surface. The spin polarization in the surface state was ∼0.56, which is smaller than that in Bi-based topological insulators. These indicate that the Kondo breakdown plays a crucial role for the topological features, not only in the bulk state near the surface but also in the surface state on SmB_6.

    This article reviews our recent point-contact spectroscopy (PCS) investigation in valence fluctuating Kondo lattice systems, EuNi_2P_2 and Ge-substituted EuNi_2(P_<0.8>Ge_<0.2>)_2, and YbPd. A heavy fermion (HF) compound EuNi_2P_2 exhibits a significant valence fluctuation owing to the intermediate Eu valence of 2.5 + at low temperatures, leading to a strong hybridization between the conduction and f electrons (c–f hybridization). The electronic density of state measurements on EuNi_2P_2 by using PCS technique reveal that the HF behavior arises from the formation of the indirect hybridization gap with a double-peak structure near the Fermi level due to c–f hybridization. In EuNi_2(P_<0.8>Ge_<0.2>)_2, the valence fluctuation is suppressed by the Ge substitution, and the separation of the double-peak structure decreases. These suggest that the HF behavior is induced by the valence fluctuation. In YbPd, where two-dimensional (2D) layers of Yb^<3+> and Yb^<2.6+> are alternately aligned, a HF-like behavior with a large Sommerfeld coefficient appears at low temperatures in the specific heat. The PCS spectra represent a zero-bias dip structure with an asymmetric background, reproduced by the summation of two Fano curves with two different characteristic temperatures, meaning the formation of two Kondo resonance states for each Yb^<3+> and Yb^<2.6+> site. These suggest that a local coherence causes the large Sommerfeld coefficient in the 2D layers of Yb^<3+>, which are screened by the conduction electrons provided by the valence fluctuating Yb^<2.6+> sites. The observed results indicate that PCS is a powerful technique for examining the variation of electronic DOS in valence fluctuating Kondo lattice systems.

These suggest that a local coherence causes the large Sommerfeld coefficient in the 2D layers of Yb3+, which are screened by the conduction electrons provided by the valence fluctuating Yb2.6+ sites. The observed results indicate that PCS is a powerful technique for examining the variation of electronic DOS in valence fluctuating Kondo lattice systems.

    This article reviews our recent point-contact spectroscopy (PCS) investigation in valence fluctuating Kondo lattice systems, EuNi2P2 and Ge-substituted EuNi2(P0.8Ge0.2)2, and YbPd. A heavy fermion (HF) compound EuNi2P2 exhibits a significant valence fluctuation owing to the intermediate Eu valence of 2.5+ at low temperatures, leading to a strong hybridization between the conduction and f electrons (c–f hybridization). The electronic density of state measurements on EuNi2P2 by using PCS technique reveal that the HF behavior arises from the formation of the indirect hybridization gap with a double-peak structure near the Fermi level due to c–f hybridization. In EuNi2(P0.8Ge0.2)2, the valence fluctuation is suppressed by the Ge substitution, and the separation of the double-peak structure decreases. These suggest that the HF behavior is induced by the valence fluctuation. In YbPd, where two-dimensional (2D) layers of Yb3+ and Yb2.6+ are alternately aligned, a HF-like behavior with a large Sommerfeld coefficient appears at low temperatures in the specific heat. The PCS spectra represent a zero-bias dip structure with an asymmetric background, reproduced by the summation of two Fano curves with two different characteristic temperatures, meaning the formation of two Kondo resonance states for each Yb3+ and Yb2.6+ site. These suggest that a local coherence causes the large Sommerfeld coefficient in the 2D layers of Yb3+, which are screened by the conduction electrons provided by the valence fluctuating Yb2.6+ sites. The observed results indicate that PCS is a powerful technique for examining the variation of electronic DOS in valence fluctuating Kondo lattice systems.

    DC reversal is a widely used technique for precise voltage measurement to remove DC offsets from the measurement signals. Herein, we propose a straightforward method using a DC reversal for the thermoelectric Thomson effect measurements. The proposed method allows the determination of Thomson coefficient from readily measurable quantities, that is, DC resistance, current, and the temperature changes caused by the Joule and Thomson effects, thereby removing the requirement of information on thermal conductivity and geometric values, which are required in a traditional DC-reversal method. Furthermore, this DC-based approach avoids typical complications experienced in recently developed AC-based methods, such as the absence of an AC current source or lock-in amplifier. The experimental results show that the Thomson coefficient of a fine Pt wire measured using the proposed method agrees well with a previously reported reference measurement with the expanded relative uncertainty of 6 %.

    We performed point-contact spectroscopy on CeB6, a heavy fermion compound, using superconducting Nb as a probe tip to achieve high-precision measurements. The differential conductance spectrum represents a sharp zero-bias conductance peak (ZBCP) below T ∼ 6 K. The temperature dependence of the spectra reveals that the ZBCP intensity increases logarithmically with decreasing temperature, owing to the evolution of Kondo resonance. A double-peak structure reflecting the indirect hybridization gap was not observed, suggesting that the development of Kondo lattice coherence is prevented by the emergence of antiferroquadrupolar and=or antiferromagnetic orderings.

  • Over-the-Gap Conductance Oscillations in Superconducting Vanadium Nanocontacts Induced by Hydrogen Impurities

    We have investigated the current-voltage (I-V) characteristics of Josephson junctions made by a low-temperature superconductor of vanadium (V) with a small amount of hydrogen (H) and deuterium (D) impurities using a mechanically controllable break junction (MCBJ) technique. Below the superconducting transition temperature TC, the differential conductance dI/dV spectra show distinct peaks within the superconducting gap, known as the subgap structure, which result from multiple Andreev reflections in pure V nanocontacts. Additionally, the H and D impurities in V nanocontacts induce several new conductance peaks outside the gap, referred to as an over-the-gap structures (OGSs). We found that the OGS peaks exhibit strong temperature dependence until the temperature is close to TCand follow the gap function predicted by BCS theory. When the contact diameter is changed at low temperature using the MCBJ technique, the OGS anomalies change almost linearly with the inverse of the contact diameter. In addition, the gap anomalies are significantly shifted outward by changing the positions of the H atoms through application of a high bias voltage between the contacts. The above features suggest that the OGS peaks are caused by the superconducting quasiparticle interference induced by H or D impurities and/or inhomogeneous structures in the nanocontacts.

    We have conducted precise magnetization measurements down to 0.5 K with a miniature He-3 cryostat and a closed-cycle He-3 gas handling system (GHS) for a superconducting quantum interference device magnetometer. The GHS contains two sorption pumps filled with granular charcoals. We pressurize He-3 gas up to ambient pressure for the liquification at 3 K and then pump the vapor for cooling. The lowest sample temperature is similar to 0.5 K and it can persist for 34 h. We demonstrate the performance of the system by observing the Meissner effect of aluminum below the superconducting transition temperature similar to 1 K. We also measured the magnetization curve of the heavy-fermion superconductor CeCoIn5 resulting in successful observation of the lower critical field at 0.5 K.

    We studied hydrogen (H) and deuterium (D) impurity effects of superconducting Josephson current flowing through the superconductor-constriction-superconductor Josephson junctions (ScS-JJ). When H or D impurities are adsorbed on the surface of the ScS-JJ prepared by niobium or lead, many spike-like peaks with almost the same spacing appear inside the superconducting gap in addition to anomalies owing to the multiple Andreev reflection in the differential conductance spectra. The spacing between the adjacent peaks is independent of the temperature variation. These indicate that H or D impurities adsorbed on the JJ are sources of noise for the Josephson current.

    Magnetic transition in K<inf>4</inf>Cu<inf>4</inf>OCl<inf>10</inf>: A model system of three-dimensional spin-12 tetrahedra
    Isolated spin tetrahedral systems with weak intertetrahedral couplings, as have been reported for Cu2Te2O5X2 (X = Cl, Br) and the related compound Cu4Te5O 12Cl4, have received much attention recently because they represent an interesting class of magnets that consist of weakly coupled magnetic clusters and, in particular, they can directly demonstrate the interplay of intertetrahedral couplings with built-in tetrahedral frustration. However, there is much debate about the structural low dimensionality of the Cu-Te-O-Cl(Br) compounds and its effect on the magnetism of the material. Here, we present a model spin tetrahedral system K4Cu4OCl 10, with almost isotropic magnetic coupling within the tetrahedron and three-dimensional connection of the tetrahedra. The system enters a spin-singlet state with a susceptibility maximum at Tmax = 11 K, and then enters an antiferromagnetic order at TN = 4.4 K. The ratio TN/Tmax = 0.40 is close to the TN/T max = 0.38 for Cu2Te2O5Br 2, which is viewed as an indicator of closeness to quantum criticality. Evidence in muon-spin rotation or relaxation suggests an incommensurate ordering. This work shows that the previously revealed ground state in aniso
