    The development of functional thermoelectric materials requires direct evidence of dopants’ locations to rationally design the electronic and phononic structure of the host matrix. In this study, Cs-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy is employed at the atomic scale to identify Cu atoms’ locations in a Cu-doped SnTe thermoelectric alloy. It is revealed that Cu atoms in the rocksalt SnTe form solid solutions at both Sn and Te sites, contrary to their electronegativity order and the intentional Cu doping at Sn sites. Cu atoms are also located at the tetrahedral and crowdion sites of the face-centred cubic structure, with varying degrees of correlations. Such high flexibility of Cu atoms in the rocksalt SnTe offers diverse phonon-scattering mechanisms conducive to the ultra-low lattice thermal conductivity of singly Cu-doped SnTe. This study offers atomic-scale insights for achieving more precise dopant engineering, leading to the accelerated development of functional thermoelectric materials.

    Ga2O3 is a promising ultrawide-bandgap semiconductor for high-voltage and high-power applications, yet achieving reliable p-type electrical conductivity remains a significant challenge. We utilized halide vapor phase epitaxy growth to synthesize epitaxial layers of β-phase Ga2O3 doped with Zn, which can serve as a suitable acceptor. Thin-film samples with Zn doping concentrations of 1.7 × 1019 and 2.5 × 1020 ions/cm3 were confirmed as single phases of monoclinic β-Ga2O3 by X-ray diffraction. To determine the location of Zn ions within the β-Ga2O3 lattice, we employed X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) in conjunction with first-principles density functional theory calculations. Theoretical XANES spectra for Zn substitutions in the tetrahedral and octahedral Ga sites in β-Ga2O3, as well as a precipitation of ZnGa2O4 spinel, were compared with the experimental data. The experimental XANES spectra of the Zn L3 edge were reproduced well by theoretical spectra of Zn ions occupied at cationic positions at the tetrahedral coordinated site.

    An advanced materials solution utilizing the concept of “smart catalysts” could be a game changer for today’s automotive emission control technology, enabling the efficient use of precious metals via their two-way switching between metallic nanoparticle forms and ionic states in the host perovskite lattice as a result of the cyclical oxidizing/reducing atmospheres. However, direct evidence for such processes remains scarce; therefore, the underlying mechanism has been an unsettled debate. Here, we use advanced scanning transmission electron microscopy to reveal the atomic-scale behaviors for a LaFe0.95Pd0.05O3-supported Ir-Pd-Ru nanocatalyst under fluctuating redox conditions, thereby proving the reversible dissolution/exsolution for Ir and Ru but with a limited occurrence for Pd. Despite such selective dissolution during oxidation, all three elements remain cooperatively alloyed in the subsequent reduction, which is a key factor in preserving the catalytic activity of the ternary nanoalloy while displaying its self-regenerating functionality and control of particle agglomeration.

    <p>Introduction<b></b></p><p>In recent years, analysis of light elements contained in materials such as batteries and catalysts has attracted attention. Soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) is useful technique to analyze the light elements. In many cases of multi-element materials, however, it may not be possible to carry out XAS experiments for all the absorption edge in a beamline, since the coverage range of X-ray energy is limited in the beamline. It was difficult to keep samples across the beamline without atmospheric exposure. This is because the specifications of sample holders are different depending on the beamline. On the other hand, many materials such as batteries and catalysts are contaminated with oxygen, carbon dioxide and water when exposed to the atmosphere. Therefore, we developed a sample transfer vessel that can transport the sample from the glove box to the analyzer without exposing it to the atmosphere [1, 2]. Furthermore, in order to perform more precise analysis, we developed a sample transfer vessel with a small ion pump [3]. In this study, we have developed a transfer vessel that can measure the soft XAS across the beamline without exposing the sample to the atmosphere, based on the apparatus that we have developed.</p><p><b></b></p><p>Experimental</p><p>After heat treatment, the sample was attached to the transfer vessel in a glove box under an argon atmosphere and transported to the analyzer. Near edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectra of the sample using both total electron yield (TEY) and partial fluorescence yield (PFY) modes were measured at the beamline 2A of the UVSOR in the Institute of Molecular Science and at the beamline 12 of the SAGA-LS. For TEY, the drain current of the sample was measured. For PFY, fluorescence X-rays were collected using an energy dispersible silicon drift detector (SDD). All experiments were performed at room temperature.</p><p></p><p>Results and Discussion<b></b></p><p>Fig. 1 shows a photograph of the developed transfer vessel. This vessel consists of coaxial type linear motion feedthrough, vacuum vessel and sample holder. The sample is fixed to the holder using carbon tape. The sample current is measured using the Bayonet Neill-Concelman (BNC) connector on the upper part of the vessel. Since this vessel can be installed in a conflat flange with an outer diameter of 70 mm (ICF70), it can be connected if there is a free ICF70 port in the beamline or analyzer. We measured the Na K-edge NEXAFS spectra of NaCl powder obtained from TEY at SAGA-LS, and the Cl K-edge NEXAFS spectra at UVSOR. The Na K-edge NEXAFS spectrum is in good agreement with the theoretical calculation results reported by McIntrosh et al. [4], and the Cl K-edge NEXAFS spectrum is in good agreement with those of Orlando et al. [5]. From the above, we were able to measure two absorption edge energy spectra at the same point on the same sample without exposure to the atmosphere, using beamlines in different facilities. We also measured MgO using the same system, and obtained a spectrum without surface contamination.     Chemical modification using only small amounts of elements such as Zn, In, Sb, or Ni has proven to be an effective means to control the desirable crystal structure of hexagonal η-Cu6Sn5 over a wide thermally operating window, typically found in Pb-free Sn-based soldering or Li-ion battery anode applications. Though appealing, the underlying mechanisms on the role of these dopants remain incomplete and their atomic arrangements within the η-Cu6Sn5 lattices have not yet been experimentally determined. In the current study, we directly reveal the atomic positions of Zn, In, and Sb at the Sn sites of η-Cu6Sn5 via atomic-scale x-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy (XEDS) maps utilizing advanced Cs-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy. The use of advanced statistical algorithms including Poisson non-local principal component analysis and lattice averaging enables the fine resolution of weak XEDS maps from trace dopant elements. Our first-principles calculations further identify the influence of dopants at these atomic sites on the overall energetics, electronic structures, as well as local bonding environments, leading to the most favorable situations for η-Cu6Sn5 stabilization.

    We report on hexagonal close-packed (hcp) palladium (Pd)–boron (B) nanocrystals (NCs) by heavy B doping into face-centered cubic (fcc) Pd NCs. Scanning transmission electron microscopy–electron energy loss spectroscopy and synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction measurements demonstrated that the B atoms are homogeneously distributed inside the hcp Pd lattice. The large paramagnetic susceptibility of Pd is significantly suppressed in Pd–B NCs in good agreement with the reduction of density of states at Fermi energy suggested by X-ray absorption near-edge structure and theoretical calculations.

    低融点のバルク金属をアルコール中で超音波照射すると、金属ナノ粒子が生成する。この現象は金属固体とアルコール溶媒の界面において、超 音波キャビテーションの高温高圧のホットスポットの発生時に、局所的に金属が分解、溶媒中に溶解し、消滅後の室温常圧に戻った過飽和状態 で金属ナノ粒子が析出する可能性が示唆されている。これに対し、学術的な観点から金属(固体)-溶媒(液体)の組み合わせにおける超音波(気体 )の物理化学的作用を理論的・実験的に解析を行い、また 超音波固液系反応場における、現象と材料の構造と特性を予測し、室温で廃棄物が 発生しないSDGs指向の新しい金属ナノ粒子合成プロセスを構築する。
