2016年4月より九州大学大学院工学研究院機械工学部門教授として着任、現在に至っている。2006年頃よりマイクロ流体・マイクロロボット・細胞工学の研究に着手し、MEMS技術を応用したマイクロ磁気駆動アクチュエーター、細胞加工、細胞手術技術の開発を行うとともに、2011年頃からは技術の医用展開として針なし気泡注射器に関する研究、2013年からはプラズマ誘起気泡の研究に携わっている。これまでジャーナル論文40件以上、国際会議プロシーディング120件以上、ナイスステップ研究者を始めとした受賞10件以上、特許申請20件以上の業績がある。さらに、JSTさきがけ(ナノシステムと機能創発,細胞機能の構成的な理解と制御)、JST A-STEP(シーズ顕在化)、科研費基盤研究(B),新学術領域など多数の公募研究に採択されており、2017年にはAMED(先端計測分析技術・機器開発プログラム)に採択され、2018年にはJST A-STEP(シーズ育成化), NEDOスマートセル8テーマの中の一つにも採択され実用化への研究においても加速している。また,2022年には科研費基盤研究(A)に採択された。グループでの研究プロジェクト申請においても着手しており2019年JST・CREST代表として採択され2022年12月よりムーンショット目標1のPMに着任し,「細胞内サイバネティック・アバターの遠隔制御によって見守られる社会の実現」の17チームからなるプロジェクトを統括を行っている.

    2020.1   日本医療研究開発機構(AMED)   針なし気泡注射器を用いた低侵襲網膜血栓除去技術の開発

    網膜静脈分枝閉塞症に対して、網膜静脈血栓部へ電界誘起気泡による低侵襲物理的刺激を血管(血栓)へ与えることにより血流を回復・改善させる技術を開発しており、対症療法ではなく、根本的に病態を解決する新手法として、独自の針なし気泡注射器を用いて独創的・先駆的病態回復法の研究を行っている。これまで輸入抗VEGF薬による対症療法しかなかったため、年間約500億円(薬価)もの医療費が支払われてきた。このような現状を打破すべく、網膜静脈血栓の根治療法を目指すオールジャパンの技術による医療機器開発を行っている。これまでモデル大型動物(ブタ)を用いた基礎検証により、本技術は電界誘起気泡の血栓分解による血流回復に有効な方法であることを示す成果が得られてはじめている。これまでの対症療法であった医薬品から治療用医療機器が実用化されることで、年間約193億円以上の医療費削減が見込まれている。

    Microvortices are emerging components that impart functionality to microchannels by exploiting inertia effects such as high shear stress, effective fluid diffusion, and large pressure loss. Exploring the dynamic generation of vortices further expands the scope of microfluidic applications, including cell stimulation, fluid mixing, and transport. Despite the crucial role of vortices’ development within sub-millisecond timescales, previous studies in microfluidics did not explore the modulation of the Reynolds number (Re) in the range of several hundred. In this study, we modulated high-speed flows (54 < Re < 456) within sub-millisecond timescales using a piezo-driven on-chip membrane pump. By applying this method to microchannels with asymmetric geometries, we successfully controlled the spatiotemporal development of vortices, adjusting their behavior in response to oscillatory flow directions. These different vortices induced different pressure losses, imparting the microchannels with direction-dependent flow resistance, mimicking a diode-like behavior. Through precise control of vortex development, we managed to regulate this direction-dependent resistance, enabling the rectification of oscillatory flow resembling a diode and the ability to switch its rectification direction. This component facilitated bidirectional flow control without the need for mechanical valves. Moreover, we demonstrated its application in microfluidic cell pipetting, enabling the isolation of single cells. Consequently, based on modulating high-speed flow, our approach offers precise control over the spatiotemporal development of vortices in microstructures, thereby introducing innovative microfluidic functionalities.

    We propose a novel deterministic lateral displacement (DLD) microfluidic device that has the capability of tunable particle separation by utilizing acoustic vibration. In conventional DLD micropillar arrays, the critical diameter (Dc,) which determines the trajectories ("displacement mode"or "zigzag mode") of a particle with a particular size, is fixed by the geometry of the arrays. To flexibly change the Dc of the DLD micropillar arrays, we fabricated a DLD microfluidic device with piezoelectric transducers to induce the microstreaming around the micropillars by applying the acoustic vibration to the microfluidic device. By infusing the particle suspension and applying the acoustic vibration to the DLD micropillar arrays, we could confirm the characteristic flow patterns around the DLD micropillars and switch the separation mode of the model particles between displacement and zigzag mode. Our preliminary results could pave the way to actively tunable DLD separation.

    Interval control of particles flowing in a microchannel is a powerful technique for high-throughput cell analyses by regulating the sample even rate for the system sampling rate. However, interval control of large particle over 100 μm, such as cell spheroids and fossil pollen, is still hard task. Here, we present spatiotemporal interval control of large particles for high-throughput analyses by on-chip vortex generations. In this system, we seamlessly integrate four fluidic functions of focusing, concentrating, spacing, and diluting into a microfluidic chip. Remarkably, the system can generate dual vortices on-demand for the spacing function, which play the key role, virtual gate, to periodically stop and pass particles with the generation cycles. We demonstrated this key function using 160-μm beads, and achieved the spatiotemporal control of particle intervals with equivalent to 500 Hz. Our proposed method will open up diverse applications requiring high-throughput analyses of large particles such as cell spheroids and fossil pollens.

    Mechanical characterization of microparticle using robot-integrated microfluidic chips enable high-throughput measurement in flow cytometry environment. However, it is difficult and costly to fabricate the previous microfluidic chips with a complex layered structure of glass-silicon-glass. Therefore, we propose a fully polymer-based robot-integrated microfluidic chip made of COP-PI-COP (COP: cyclo-olefin polymer, PI: polyimide) which is made by a simple fabrication process with low cost. In our experiments, we achieved the actuation of integrated polymer beams with a spring constant of 0.18 N/m, a displacement of 72 μm, and a frequency of ~10 Hz. Finally, we demonstrated the mechanical characterization of the hydrogel beads.

    We present a mechano-indexing system based an ultrasound microscope, which enables flow cytometric measurement of mechanical characteristics of bioparticles such as hydrogel-beads, cells, and spheroids. Unlike the conventional mechanical characterization methods based on a contact manner such as mechanical probing with high-resolution but low-throughput, our non-contact method allows to measure the ultrasound waves relating mechanical characteristics of flowed bioparticles in a glass- capillary-based microchannel with exceedingly high-throughput. By utilizing the constructed system, we demonstrated the proposed flow cytometric mechano-indexing using glass microbeads, hydrogel microbeads, Euglena gracilis which is a microalga, and cell spheroid of mesenchymal stem cell (MSC spheroid). Especially, the experimental results of MSC spheroid showed that time-transition of their mechanical characteristics with respect to the culture days.

  • Enhancing suspended cell transfection by inducing localized distribution of the membrane actin cortex before exposure to electromechanical stimulation

    Objectives: During physical transfection, an electrical field or mechanical force is used to induce cell transfection. We tested if the disruption of a dense actin layer underneath the membrane of a suspended cell enhances cell transfection. Results: A bubble generator was used to electromechanically stimulate suspended cells. To clarify the influence of the actin layer (the actin cortex) on cell transfection efficiency, we used an actin polymerization inhibitor (cytochalasin D) to disrupt the actin cortex before electromechanical stimulation. Without cytochalasin D treatment, signals from the overall actin cortex decreased after electromechanical stimulation. With cytochalasin D treatment, there was localized F-actin aggregation under static conditions. After electromechanical stimulation, there was a partial loss (localized disruption), but no overall disruption, of the actin cortex. With the pretreatment with cytochalasin D, the transfection efficiency of plasmids (4.7, 8.3, or 11 kbp) into NIH/3T3 or UMR-106 cells increased significantly after exposure to electromechanical stimulation. Conclusions: Localized distribution of the actin cortex before exposure to electromechanical stimulation is crucial for inducing a partial loss of the cortex, which improves transfection efficiency and large plasmid delivery.

    We propose a microfluidic device for continuous production of fused cells by encapsulating cells in microdroplets for paring, separating them from empty ones, and applying voltage to them (Fig. 1). This system is expected to overcome potential issues of conventional microfluidic methods using microstructures for cell pairing, which are limitation in size and number of target cells, and difficulty in collecting fused cells. Here, we demonstrate cell fusion by applying pulse voltage to droplets in which two cells are packed tightly and confirmed the presence of some fused cells in collected cell-encapsulated droplets.

    <p>On-chip mechano-indexing has many advantages such as low risk of contamination, stable environment for manipulation, and flow cytometric measurement. In this paper, we propose a microfluidic chip made by rigid polymers; two cyclo-olefin polymer substrates and a polyimide film with force sensor probes. Compared to the conventional robot integrated microfluidic chip composed of glass – silicon – glass layers, the proposed COP – PI – COP chip allow us to reduce the fabrication process with keeping rigidity for the sensor probe. In the experiment, we succeeded in driving a force sensor probe with the fabricated microfluidic chip and measuring the mechano-index of a hydrogel.</p>

    We propose a novel microfluidic technique for the high-efficient encapsulation of double cells into a droplet. For double-cells encapsulation into a droplet, we designed a microfluidic droplet generator (MFDG), consisting of the rhombic-shaped reservoir channel and constriction channel. The designed MFDG acts as a "virtual particles valve"because of the trapping of the single cell in the reservoir channel and releasing the cells when another cell flow into there. By tuning the flow rates for dispersed and continuous phases, we found that the double-cells encapsulation efficiency could be increased compared to the theoretical encapsulation efficiency derived by the Poisson distribution.

    In this paper, we proposed a novel needle-free injection method using electrically induced microbubbles. This microbubble needle-free injector is developed to achieve the depth-controlled drug injection. A focusing device was developed to enhance the pressure of microbubble-induced shock wave and improve the perforation ability of injector. Due to the injection depth being related to the distance between injector tip and target, we propose to control the injection depth by sensing and adjusting the distance. We developed the distance measurement by microbubble injector itself. In this work, the microbubble injector was both the actuator and sensor. This needle-free microbubble is a promising tool to achieve the injection depth-controlled in the future.

    We propose a local metal deposition method that enables patterning on hydrogels using micro-plasma-bubbles (MPBs). In this method, we generate MPBs in a solution containing metal ions. Local metal deposition on hydrogels has a wide range of possibilities, however, it has been a considerable challenge since appropriate methods have not been established. In this work, we reduced metal ions in an electrolyte solution and successfully deposited several kinds of metals such as copper, nickel, copper-nickel alloy, and even gold nanoparticles on hydrogels by using MPBs. These results show that the proposed method opens up new possibilities of an on-demand metallization process for hydrogels that can serve as soft actuators and electronics.

    We propose a novel droplet microfluidic device for high-throughput generation of giant liposomes without surface modification of microchannel by utilizing the step emulsification and the parallelized droplet transfer microchannels. Unlike the conventional microfluidic techniques for production of giant liposomes, limiting the throughput due to the low production rate of droplets in single microfluidic droplet generator, the proposed device could produce giant liposomes with high throughput manner. Our microfluidic device consists of two main parts; (i) water-in-oil (W/O) droplet generation through 100 parallelized micro nozzles, and (ii) generation of uniform W/O/W droplet through parallelized droplet transfer channels. After generation of W/O/W droplets at 332 Hz, they transformed into giant liposome by dewtting process.

    We present a high-speed on-chip liquid dispensing by utilizing on-demand vortex generations for analyzing dynamic cellular functions against osmotic change. Unlike previous methods, our system can discretely dispense the liquid in laminar flow by employing traveling vortex containing different solutions from normal medium. Therefore, we can switch microscale environment surrounding single cells with high-speed of under 2.25 ms. Moreover, we can repeatedly switch the environment with the high-frequency of approximately 400 Hz, which is a unique technique to investigate the frequency response of cells against environmental change. In this paper, we demonstrated repetitive stimulations to a single micro-alga. Our technique will contribute to unexplored high-speed and frequency cellular dynamic responses.

    We present on-chip multi-sorting of single cells by utilizing high-speed flow control with high-resolution. We utilized dual-membrane pumps integrated into a microfluidic chip, which were driven by the piezoelectric actuators. We evaluated the performance of multi-sorting using multi-threshold for fluorescent intensity. As results, we achieved high-speed sorting with the response time of 86 μs (equivalent to 8.6 kHz). We demonstrated on-chip multi-sorting using microbeads and EGFP-expressing cell, and they were successfully sorted into 6 groups based on five thresholds. The presented multi-sorting opens new paradigms of detailed analyses of bioparticles.

    In this research, we proposed a novel non-contact distance sensor using electrically induced microbubble. The microbubble generated from sensor tip by applying the voltage pulse to the sensor. The microbubble expanded and reached the object at a certain time. A sudden change in the current flowing through the sensor occurred when microbubble reached the object. This distance sensing method was developed by building a relation between the current and the distance. In this paper, electrically induced microbubble generation mechanism, current characteristics of microbubble touching different material target, distance-current characteristics development and the improvement of distance measurement range was introduced.

    We propose a novel generation technique of DNA-functionalized colloidal crystals, which have unique functional properties (e.g. encapsulation of molecules), inside a giant unilamellar vesicle (GUV) toward the controlling the numbers of crystals introduced into the cells by cell-GUV membrane fusion. We designed and fabricated a microfluidic device to generate monodisperse water-in-oil-in-water (W/O/W) droplets containing the DNA-functionalized nanoparticle (DNA-NP), which is a precursor of GUV, for generation of GUV encapsulating a single crystal. We demonstrate production of W/O/W droplets encapsulating DNA-NP, collection of these droplets into microtubes, and the single crystallization of DNA-NP inside the produced W/O/W droplet through annealing process in the incubator.

    Cell poration technologies offer opportunities not only to understand the activities of biological molecules but also to investigate genetic manipulation possibilities. Unfortunately, transferring large molecules that can carry huge genomic information is challenging. Here, we demonstrate electromechanical poration using a core–shell-structured microbubble generator, consisting of a fine microelectrode covered with a dielectric material. By introducing a microcavity at its tip, we could concentrate the electrical field with the application of electric pulses and generate microbubbles for electromechanical stimulation of cells. Specifically, the technology enables transfection with molecules that are thousands of kDa even into osteoblasts and Chlamydomonas, which are generally considered to be difficult to inject. Notably, we found that the transfection efficiency can be enhanced by adjusting the viscosity of the cell suspension, which was presumably achieved by remodeling of the membrane cytoskeleton. The applicability of the approach to a variety of cell types opens up numerous emerging gene engineering applications.

    3D wiring technology is required for the integration of micro–nano devices on various 3D surfaces. However, current wiring technologies cannot be adapted to a variety of materials and surfaces. Here, we propose a new metal deposition method using only a micro-plasma bubble injector and a metal ion solution. Micro-plasma bubbles were generated on demand using pulses, and the localized reaction field enables metal deposition independent of the substrate. Three different modes of micro-plasma bubble generation were created depending on the power supply conditions and mode suitable for metal deposition. Furthermore, using a mode in which one bubble was generated for all pulses among the three modes, copper deposition on dry/wet materials, such as chicken tissue and glass substrates, was achieved. In addition, metal deposition of copper, nickel, chromium, cobalt, and zinc was achieved by simply changing the metal ion solution. Finally, patterning on glass and epoxy resin was performed. Notably, the proposed metal deposition method is conductivity independent. The proposed method is a starting point for 3D wiring of wet materials, which is difficult with existing technologies. Our complete system makes it possible to directly attach sensors and actuators to living organisms and robots, for example, and contribute to soft robotics and biomimetics.

    We present a large particles ordering technique for controlling event intervals by high-speed flow control. Unlike conventional ordering methods targeting small particles less than 50 μm, our method can regulate event intervals of larger particles around 100 μm by the combinations of concentration and spacing mechanisms. Specifically, we employed dual vortices for spacing which work as virtual gate to stop and transport particles by vortices generations cycles. As results, we successfully ordered 100-μm beads with the intervals of multiple of 2 ms. Thus, our method not only overcome the random distributions but also open up new microfluidic applications for large particles.

    Cell fusion has been widely applied in scientific research for cancer immunotherapy, antibody production, and nuclear reprogramming of somatic cells, and therefore the cell fusion technique that enable us to precisely control the fusion process with high throughput manner has been desired. Here, we present a novel microfluidic method for automatic cell pairing by microdroplets, separation of droplets containing cells, and electrofusion of cells inside a droplet. The proposed microfluidic device mainly composed of three sequential function parts for (i) encapsulation of cells into a droplet by microfluidic droplet generator, (ii) separation of droplets containing cells from empty droplets through a micropillar array, and (iii) electrofusion of cells inside the droplets by applying a voltage during the droplet passing over the pair of electrodes. In the microfluidic device, cell-encapsulated and empty droplets were generated at the upstream cross-junction; they then entered the micropillar array, separating the cell-encapsulated droplets from empty droplets continuously. After separation, they passed over the electrode pairs, and were collected the outside of the microchannel. This continuous process for cell fusion would enable us to observe and isolate the target fused cells for cell analysis.

    Plasma generated in liquids has attracted attention as a high-speed reaction field in the fields of surface modification, material synthesis, and water purification. In particular, electrically generated plasma is used for the synthesis of metal/metal oxides by inducing electrochemical reactions through the plasma. We have previously proposed a metal deposition method using plasma-induced bubbles, which can be generated on demand by applying a voltage pulse. However, the mechanism of their generation has not been clarified, and a design theory for device design has not been established. Here, we discuss a method for the on-demand generation of microplasma bubbles by electric field concentration. In this paper, we aimed to construct a finite element analysis model for device design. The validity of the analytical model was confirmed by comparison with experiments. Specifically, we focused on the location of bubble generation, response speed, and density change. As a result, the analytical model was able to reproduce the position of bubble generation, response speed, and density change during pulse application. It was also found that under most conditions, the bubble generation was due to heat. Therefore, by using a model that considers only heat, it is possible to construct a design model with a low computational cost.

    Delivering nanoartifacts such as molecules and nanosensors into cells is a fundamental technology contributing to not only gene editing for obtaining desired cells but also measurement of intracellular environment. A method enabling to locally deliver molecules into targeted cells under culture condition is coveted, however, existing technologies represented by electroporation are hard to offer such opportunities. Here, we present an in-situ injection system based on local electroporation by a robotic-controlled microelectrode. We demonstrated two diverse applications: 2D drawing using plasmid DNA (4.7 kbp) and FITC-labeled dextran (250 kDa and 2 MDa), and in-situ injection of ribonucleoprotein (guide RNA with Cas9).

    We propose a novel droplet microfluidic device for high-throughput generation of giant unilamellar vesicles (GUVs) through dewetting process of the water-in-oil-in-water (W/O/W) double emulsions, which generated by step emulsification and droplet transfer technique. Our microfluidic device consists of two main functional parts; water-in-oil (W/O) droplet generation through 300 parallelized micro nozzles, and generation of W/O/W double emulsions by transferring the produced W/O droplets across the oil-water interface. We demonstrated the W/O droplet generation in step emulsification channels followed by the formation of W/O/W double emulsions (~500 droplets/s) by transferring across the oil-water interface for production of GUVs.

    We propose high-speed on-chip flow control technique utilizing COP (cyclo-olefin polymer) membrane pump. Among the substrate material of microfluidic chip, COP provides advantages of transparency, biocompatibility and ease of fabrication. To extend the functionality of this superior COP chip, we develop COP membrane pump which can follow the high-speed actuation of the piezoelectric actuator by using its sufficient rigidity. As examples of functionalities, we demonstrated the on-chip sorting with the throughput of 3.6 kHz, and the on-chip mixing in the order of millisecond. These results indicate not only capability of high-speed flow control but also broad applicability of our method.

    We have developed a novel needle-free injector based on the electrically induced microbubbles. In this article, firstly we evaluated the reagent injection depth using electrically induced microbubble injector. Then, we created elliptical hemispherical reflectors to focus the shock waves from the microbubbles and thus amplify the shock and expansion waves. We observed the shock and expansion waves from the microbubble by the ripple shadowing method and realized the amplification of the shock and expansion waves by the fabricated reflector.

    We present versatile metal deposition on hydrogels utilizing micro-plasma-bubbles (MPBs), or local plasma reaction fields in solution. Although metallization of such soft and wet materials has been a tough challenge, we succeeded in precipitating metal on the surface of hydrogel by reducing metal ions. Our method is applicable to many kinds of metal species. We confirmed copper, nickel, and cobalt deposition on hydrogels. Even alloy was successfully deposited just by mixing the solutions before generating MPB. Then we demonstrate that deposited nickel has a magnetic property. Results showed that we developed an on-demand hydrogel metallization system with considerable versatility.

    We propose a novel microfluidic system utilizing microdroplets for continuous cell pairing, fusion, and collection of the fused cells to the outside. Unlike the conventional microfluidic cell fusion using microstructures, which restrict the cell sizes and the number of cells for pairing, and the collection to the outside, our microfluidic device utilize droplets as the field of cell fusion, enabling the continuous cell pairing, fusion, and collection of the fused cells. We demonstrated cell fusion in droplets by tightly packing the cells into droplets for pairing, separation of cell-encapsulated droplets, and applying the pulsed-voltage to the droplets.

    Nanofunctioners represented by nanosensors and nucleic acids offer major leap forwards in understanding intercellular communication by not only giving triggers to start talking but also visualizing the ways to transfer information. However, transportation of various nanofunctioners into desired live-cells is still challenging. We present a revolutionary concept, “avatar cells”, which are living cells gifted nanofunctioners as if living carriers. Two-types of avatar cells based on neutrophils and macrophages were produced by transporting nanofunctioners: fluorescent nanodiamond (FND) and fluorescent DNA stain contained in monodispersed lipid nanoparticles (LNPs), respectively. We demonstrated visualization of intercellular communication during NETosis triggered by byphorbol12-myristate13-acetate (PMA).

    A novel needle-free injection system by electrically induced microbubbles has been developed. First of all, we evaluated the depth of injected reagent for evaluating injection performance. Then, the cavitation-induced shock wave has been focused to magnify the injection performance by semi-spherical reflector. We successfully visualized the shock wave by Shlieren method and succeeded in measuring the pressure of focused shock wave and expansion wave by hydrophone.

    本研究は長期間安定的にウェット環境下での生体を識別できるシステムの確立を目的としている。そ我々は水環境に影響されにくい磁場に着目し、安価で容易に手に入る微小な磁性体の発熱等を用いて生体の個々の情報を長時間識別できる方法を提案し、発熱に向けた基礎研究を行う。本研究の挑戦的研究としての意義は超常磁性ナノ粒子の高周波磁場による発熱原理の一つであるネール緩和に着目し磁気モーメントの磁化遅れにより発熱する現象を利用したまったく新しいサーモタグを確立することにある.この原理の実用化の社会へのインパクトは大きくRFIDタグの市場を凌駕する微小なタグの誕生が見込まれるものである.

    3次元造形技術の発展に伴い,多様な材質,形状の物体を短時間かつ簡易に作製することが可能となった現在において, 柔軟性を有する3次元造形物に高解像度かつロバストな電気回路を付与することは産業発展に大きく貢献できる技術と成り得る.一方,従来プラスチック等の非導電性物質への回路形成に使用される無電解めっき法は,事前処理やめっき浴の調整が困難である.本研究では,事前基板処理・洗浄が不要であり,廃液がほとんど発生せず,金属・ポリマー・生体等,幅広い材質へ電気配線を行うことのできる新たな技術の創生を目的とする.またその機能運用(生体へのマーキング・トレーシング技術)も行い実用化への目途をつける.

Outline of Social Contribution and International Cooperation activities

  • 社会貢献:H30以降においても積極的な企業や社会への発信を心がける.例えば平成30年7月末にYKKより新しい技術への取り組むための研究姿勢や異分野への研究をスタ ートする取り組み方についての講演と座談会を開催し,普段研究開発を行っている若手技術者とのディスカッションを行う貴重な機会を得ることができた.また福岡県人づくり・県民生活部男女共同参画推進課 女性活躍推進室より女子中高生の研究室見学や交流会について依頼があり,8月4日のオープンキャンパス時に合わせて開催した.また学科の依頼により10月に広島県・基町高校にて出前授業を行い高校生に向けて研究の面白さについての講演を行った.平成30年はFD等委員会の委員長として博多駅近くにて機械工学公開講座を社会人向けに学科の企画として立案・遂行を行ったが,令和元年9月には講演者として公開講座において発表を行う予定である,今後も引き続き積極的な社会連携を行う予定である.
    国際連携活動:
    平成30年度は7月にアイルランド・ダブリンで行われるWCB国際会議にて招待講演を行い,その母校であるロンドン大学インペリアルカレッジにおいて最近の研究を題材とした学内のレクチャーを行った.令和元年前後もMRS-JやICPlasma2019において招待講演を行った.2年に一度行われるセンサー系のト ップレベルの国際会議であるTransducers2019(ドイツ・ベルリン)にて学生が2件の発表を行う機会も頂いている.このような国際会議等の発表や講演で興味を持って頂いた研究者との交流や共同研究等のネットワーク構築を行うことを目標とする.日本国際賞(Japan Prize)後席列席(2018年4月18日)についても行った.2023,2025年度のTransducersにはETPC(Executive Technical Program Committee)となり国際会議の学会運営に貢献し,同年Transduecersのコア運営委員であるInternational Steering Committee(ISC)に選挙で選出された.Actuator2024のETPC(Executive Technical Program Committee)にも着任している.また,日本学術会議機械工学委員会IUTAM国際連携委員会の委員長に着任し2024年3月に日本国内の外国人PIを集めた理論応用力学シンポジウムを日本学術会議講堂で開催した.

  • 九州大学の山西陽子教授は針が無い注射器を開発した。長さ約10センチのガラス製で、先端を肌に当てる。先端部では電気で直径5~7マイクロ(マイクロは100万分の1)メートルの微小な気泡を作る。薬液をまとう気泡を高速で前方へ打ち出し、皮膚細胞に穴を開けて流し込む。 細胞に開く穴が非常に小さく、針を使う注射器のような痛みはない。針の無い注射器は市販されているが、バネの力で液体を高圧で発射するため神経を傷付ける恐れもあったという。一度に注入できる薬剤の量を増やすなどし、企業と協力して実用化する。糖尿病で血糖値を下げるインスリンを繰り返し注射する場合や、予防接種などに使える可能性がある Newspaper, magazine
