    This study investigates the relationship between pore size distribution (PSD) on porous surfaces and the onset of nucleate pool boiling (ONB) for dielectric liquids. Reducing the boiling incipience (ΔT<inf>ONB</inf>) is critical for enhancing boiling heat transfer efficiency in immersion cooling, especially as data centers face increasing heat fluxes demands due to AI advancements. However, this relationship has not been thoroughly examined due to the complex dynamics of boiling initiation. To address this, three different honeycomb porous plates (HPPs) were fabricated and attached to an indium-tin oxide (ITO) heater for boiling experiments. Detailed assessments of the pores were conducted using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), CT scanning, and mercury penetration porosimetry. Additionally, a novel measurement technique that synchronized infrared with high-speed video cameras allowed for precise measurement of average ΔT<inf>ONB</inf>, local ΔT<inf>ONB</inf>, and hot spots. The results demonstrated that increasing pore size effectively lowers ΔT<inf>ONB</inf>, reducing the risk of temperature overshoot in electronics. Durability tests, including 48-hour immersion in AE-3000 liquid, revealed that HPPs with larger pore sizes maintained enhanced boiling performance over time. Re-entrant cavities, observed through CT scanning in the HPP with the largest pore size, contributed significantly to this stability. As a result, the heat transfer coefficient (HTC) was enhanced up to approximately 4.7 times compared to a plain surface. This increased HTC is especially beneficial for cooling schemes that demand efficient heat removal. These findings represent an initial step toward quantitatively understanding the principles of ΔT<inf>ONB</inf> control in the engineered porous surfaces, providing new guidelines for designing enhanced surfaces for future applications.

    To enhance the compactness of electrolyzers and mitigate energy losses during high operating current densities, the concept of a zero-gap electrolytic cell design has been proposed, with wire mesh commonly utilized as electrodes owing to its cost effectiveness and easy fabrication. To achieve more efficient hydrogen production, many studies have been done on developing high-performance water electrolysis catalysts based on wire mesh electrode. The structure of wire mesh electrode can influence its gas bubbles release behavior, thereby impacting its water electrolysis performance significantly. However, the relationship between the wire mesh structure, gas bubble behavior on wire mesh, and water electrolysis performance of wire mesh is still unclear. In this study, four types of Ni wire mesh electrodes with varying mesh numbers (20 mesh, 40 mesh, 100 mesh, and 200 mesh) were employed as cathodes in a zero-gap electrolytic cell to investigate the relationship between wire mesh structure, behavior of hydrogen bubble detachment from wire mesh, and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance of wire mesh. At a high current density (i<inf>ECSA</inf> = 800 mA/cm<sup>2</sup>) in 1 M KOH aqueous solution, hydrogen bubbles detach in a higher rate and smaller size from the Ni wire mesh with higher mesh number. In this case, the HER overpotential decreases in the order of 20 mesh >40 mesh >100 mesh >200 mesh, because the higher detachment rate and smaller detachment size of hydrogen bubbles can cause a greater catalytic active sites exposure of Ni wire mesh electrode and lead to a lower HER overpotential. To simulate the operating condition of industrial electrolyzers, a 4 M KOH aqueous solution was also utilized as the electrolyte to explore the aforementioned relationship. Under i<inf>ECSA</inf> = 800 mA/cm<sup>2</sup>, the average sizes of hydrogen bubbles detachment from four types of wire mesh electrodes increased to varying degrees comparing with that observed in 1 M KOH aqueous solution. These findings indicate that operating conditions of the electrolysis system may influence the relationship between HER performance of wire mesh and wire mesh structure by altering the behavior of hydrogen bubble on wire mesh. Our study highlighted the importance of evaluating the characteristics of bubble on wire mesh during water electrolysis in order to determine the wire mesh structure with optimum performance.

    <p>Porous-type anodic oxide with re-entrant structures formed by two distinct anodizing processes suppressed the delay of boiling initiation. Even after long-term boiling, the nanostructured oxide surface maintained its structure. Moreover, the boiling cooling performance of hydrofluoroether-7100 was equal to that before the test.</p>

    <p>High-temperature heat pumps represent a pivotal technology in the pursuit of decarbonizing industrial process heating with the utmost efficiency. Steam serves as the energy carrier for many industrial systems, making steam supply heat pumps as a promising approach for efficient decarbonization. An existing heat pump-based steam supply system with a supply steam temperature of 135°C or higher consists of the following 3 units; a heat pump unit with the mixture of R245fa and R134a, a flash tank unit, and a steam compressor unit. However, recent developments in refrigerants for higher applications have increased the technology options for the system configuration of steam supply heat pump. Specifically, it will be possible to supply steam at a level of 150°C, which could not be achieved with conventional refrigerants such as R245fa and R134a due to the critical temperature constraints. In this paper, a thermal and economic model for a steam supply heat pump system is developed based on the test results with the existing system. The model is applied to analyze the change in COP (coefficient of performance) and LCOH (levelized cost of heat) when changing to new refrigerants under the condition of 150°C steam supply. As a result, we clarify the couple of changing the refrigerant form the conventional R245fa to R1336mzz(Z) or R601 and removing the steam compressor can improve the COP and also reduce the LCOH.</p>

    <p>Recently, the use of boiling cooling has been considered for emergency cooling in nuclear power plants and for cooling of large power devices. We fabricated electrodeposited porous plates with micro-scale honeycomb porous structure and improved the critical heat flux by using them. The structures of the porous plates were modified significantly by changing the electrodeposition conditions. The experimental results showed that the difference in the porous structure greatly affected to the critical heat flux. As for the relationship between the existence ratio of macro-channels and the critical heat flux, the critical heat flux was higher when there were few macro-channels than when the percentage of macro-channels were very high. It is thought that this tendency was obtained due to the role of porous part in retaining the liquid in boiling. In addition, the critical heat flux improved as the Wickability was increased. Therefore, the wicking performance of the porous plates is considered to have greatly improved the critical heat flux.</p>

    <p>Since boiling is a phenomenon with high heat transfer performance, it is expected to be used in various industrial fields such as emergency cooling in nuclear power plants, power device cooling for EVs and next-generation CPU cooling in data centers. So far, various research on boiling have been carried out in the background of these trends. In particular, many studies have been conducted to improve the critical heat flux (<i>q</i><sub>CHF</sub>) which is the limit of boiling heat transfer. However, since the mechanism of <i>q</i><sub>CHF</sub> is a complex phenomenon, the methods of <i>q</i><sub>CHF</sub> improvement are still unconstructed. Here we demonstrate the high-performance heat transfer surface using electrodeposition which fabricates copper porous plate. We found that this copper porous plate has higher <i>q</i><sub>CHF</sub> (3.7 MW/m<sup>2</sup>) than the plain surface (1.3 MW/m<sup>2</sup>) in saturated pool boiling of water at atmospheric pressure. The structure of copper porous plates is investigated by X-ray CT and SEM. The copper porous plates have a honeycomb porous structure consisting of porous area and vapor escape channels extending vertically from the substrate. In addition, the diameter of the vapor escape channels increases from the substrate to the top surface. This surface structure can supply the coolant to the heat transfer surface with the reduction of pressure drop. Our results show that the mechanism of <i>q</i><sub>CHF</sub> improvement using porous plate depends on the wicking phenomenon and structure. We expect that these results will help in the development of high-performance heat transfer surfaces for various industrial applications.</p>

    <p>To promote the "Basic Hydrogen Strategy" first formulated by Japan [1], hydrogen storage technology based on toluene and methylcyclohexane (MCH) reversible reaction has received widespread attention due to its convenience in hydrogen transport. Superheated vaporization is a necessary process for the catalytic dehydrogenation of MCH, and a novel method with a simple structure to generate superheated water steam quickly and efficiently have been proved in our previous study. However, the start-up response and efficiency of this porous media steam generator has not yet been clarified while using organic fluid. As MCH is toxic to human body, ethanol, which has similar physical properties to MCH, was used in our experiment. Compared to the water, ethanol with lower latent heat has better performance in generating superheated vapor rapidly and efficiently, which also proves that the proposed vapor generator is suitable for the MCH reaction. Considering both heat transfer and fluid flow in the porous media, the energy utilization efficiency and surface temperature were analyzed using one-dimensional models.</p>

    <p>Enhancement of the critical heat flux in pool boiling by the attachment of a micro HPP on a heated surface is investigated experimentally using water under saturated boiling conditions. HPP enhance the CHF from the capillary supply of liquid onto the heated surface through the pores and the release of vapor generated through the channels. When the height of the micro HPP on the heated surface is 1.4 mm, the CHF increases to 2.5 MW/m<sup>2</sup>. While the CHF began to decrease when the thickness was more than1.4 mm. In regions of thin HPP thickness, the CHF can be explained by the Haramura-Katto model. Therefore, in this presentation we examined the CHF mechanism in the thicker HPP region using the capillary limit model.</p>

    <p>Superheated vapor is used in several industrial fields including sterilization, desiccation, and dehydrogenating. MCH (methylcyclohexane) has been vastly utilized as hydrogen carrier under several advantages. Superheated vaporization is necessary for catalytically dehydrogenating MCH. Current superheated vapor generation methods including high-frequency induction heating and microwave heating are difficult to obtain rapid generation and shutdown responses due to the large heat capacity of the fluid in the tank and the heater. For the realization of a carbon-free society and a hydrogen-based society, we proposed a method to generate superheated vapor using porous material with rapid response and high efficiency. Vapor may be generated rapidly from the surface of porous material due to small heat capacity of liquid in the meniscus. The main objective of the present research was to experimentally investigate the performance of the vapor generator using different working fluid with different property. As a result, fluid with low latent heat had better performance in generating superheated vapor rapidly and efficiently. Considering both heat conduction and fluid advection in porous material, the energy utilization efficiency and surface temperature were analyzed by a simplified one-dimensional model. The calculated results were shown to be in good agreement with the experimental results. The proposed vapor generator is suitable for superheated vaporization in MCH method from the analysis of the model.</p>

    申請者は水電解に沸騰を重畳させ、水電解水素製造効率を10%向上する。種々条件を調整すれば、水電解装置を100℃付近で運転でき、この時、沸騰が電極上で起きる。沸騰気泡内の水蒸気圧力は周囲の水に比べて高く、高圧水蒸気によって電極上への水分子の吸着、すなわち電極反応の最初の素過程が加速的に進み、電解電圧が低減し、水電解効率が向上すると考えられる。そこで本申請では、水電解に沸騰を重畳できる水電解電極を構築し、電極微細構造や運転条件等が沸騰重畳効果に及ぼす影響を定量化し、電圧低減メカニズムを明らかにし、理論モデルをツールにして沸騰重畳効果を最大化する水電解装置を開発して水電解効率10%向上を達成する。

Educational Activities

  • I was responsible for a range of undergraduate and graduate courses, providing comprehensive education in the fundamentals and applications of thermal and fluid engineering. Specifically, I taught subjects such as “Heat Transfer I,” “Heat Transfer I & II,” and “Two-Phase Flow Phenomena I & II,” with a focus on heat transfer, boiling, and condensation. In addition, I contributed to liberal arts education and interdisciplinary learning through courses like “Fundamental Engineering Ethics” and the “Special Topics in Mechanical Engineering (VIII),” fostering ethical awareness and a broad academic perspective among students.
