    <p>In the present study, numerical simulation of cavitating flow using Multi-Process model, which is one of the homogeneous cavitation models and consists of multiple transport equations of bubbly flow characteristics defined on the basis of the moment method, is conducted for a centrifugal pump toward more accurate prediction. The experiment is also conducted for the same pump to obtain the hydraulic performance including the axial thrust force characteristics as well as the visual aspects of cavitation for the validation of numerical simulation. It is found that the present simulation can qualitatively reproduce the degradation of pump suction performance as well as the change in axial thrust force under cavitation at the design flow rate; thrust forces acting on the impeller and the balance drum decreases with the head drop. The cavity patterns leading to the head drop are also well reproduced; the cavitation on the suction surface extends into the blade passage. At a partial flow rate close to the design one, the simulated cavity patterns with the inception and moderate states of cavitation agree with the observation, but they are not well reproduced perhaps due to the insufficient mesh resolution at the deep partial flow rate where the most of cavitation occurs in the vortical structure, typically in the tip separation vortex.</p>

    <p>The development of prediction methods for cavitation flow is an important research topic since the cavitation causes several severe problems in real applications. Multi-Process (MP) model we employ in the present study is a homogeneous model with four equations that can take account of main elementary processes in cavitation using the moment method for a size distribution function of cavitation bubbles. Therefore, it is expected to improve the prediction accuracy compared to typical one-equation models generally applied for hydraulic machines with acceptable computational costs. In this paper, unsteady RANS simulation using MP model as well as a typical one-equation model was carried out on the final stage model of multi-stage centrifugal pump and the results are compared between two models as well as with experiments. As a result, the present simulation using MP model was found to qualitatively simulate the degradation of pump suction performance and the change in axial thrust force under cavitation as similar to the other homogeneous model; Thrust forces acting on the impeller and the balance drum decreases with the degradation of the head. In comparison with visualization experiments, both the models predicted cavity growth qualitatively well, although the distribution of void fraction showed significant differences.</p>

    Hydraulic cavitation is mainly affected by the pressure or velocity field, but the detailed flow structure also depends on other factors such as surface wall roughness or working fluid quality. Among those, the present study has focused on the influence of air content as a non-condensable gas in water, which is one of the factors in water quality. The novel point in this study is that we have applied a simple but physics-based model taking account of the mass transfer of the non-condensable gas based on mass conservation law in the CFD simulations. On the basis of the assumption of a homogeneous bubbly flow, the simulations were conducted by solving five governing equations for cavitation around a hydrofoil of Clark Y-11.7% (angle of attack is 8°) modifying interPhaseChageFoam of OpenFOAM v1706. As a result, the lift coefficient containing air showed higher values than the case without the gas in a certain developed cavitation state showing a periodic change of the hydrofoil lift force, and it may improve the current prediction accuracy of the lift in many CFD simulations. In the case with much air content, an attached cavity around the leading edge due to the influence of the precipitation of air was confirmed even at the time of the minimum lift force, different from the case with little content of air.

    This paper examines the satisfaction of the principle of corresponding states (PCS) on thepressure–density–temperature relation and the binary diffusion coefficient of hydrogen/oxygen mixture modelled as binary Lennard–Jones (LJ) fluid especially in a supercritical region. The hydrogen/oxygen mixture properties were computed by molecular dynamics simulation and compared with simulation results for a nitrogen/oxygen mixture as well as while using the Peng–Robinson (PR) equation of state (EOS) for both mixture types and a mono-component LJ-EOS. The Fuller–Schettler–Giddings model with the PR-EOS and Takahashi’s EOS were used for binary diffusion coefficient comparison. The pseudocritical point concept of a fluid mixture was applied for PCS reduction and PCS satisfaction was conducted over a wide temperature range above the pseudocritical pressure with changing hydrogen molar fraction. PCS satisfaction for hydrogen/oxygen mixture properties was confirmed at reduced temperature of 1.5 or above. At reduced temperature of 1.0 or below, the hydrogen/oxygen mixture properties disagree with those of the comparison mixture because phase separation occurs. We conclude that the properties of hydrogen/oxygen mixtures can be estimated using the pseudocritical point concept and the investigated EOSs based on the PCS in the supercritical region at reduced temperature of1.5 or above.

    <p>The mechanical balance at the three-phase contact line of nanobubble on convex-concave solid surface with changing the concave of solid surface is investigated using molecular dynamics method. As a result, it was found that nanobubble can be generated in the concave and its occupation can be fixed inside the concave. In addition, the smaller the concave of solid surface, the larger the nanobubble radius and contact angle, but it is not fixed inside the concave of solid surface. Mean stress tensor is negative at the solid-liquid interface and positive within the nanobubble, resulting in a stress difference between inside and outside the nanobubble.</p>

    <p>Numerical simulations of inlet jets flow of propellants in the main combustion chamber equipped in a liquid rocket engine have been conducted by compressible CFD technics employing a van der Waals-type equation of state (EOS) and chemical reaction models. Various simulations have been already conducted both for combustion and non-combustion state in the chamber; however, the accuracy of EOS for the mixture of propellant employing a classical mixing rule (CMR), particularly for the sound speed, has not been understood well. Therefore, we have validated the applicability of Soave–Redlich–Kwong (SRK) EOS as one of the van der Waals-type EOSs coupled with the CMR for the sound speed using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations against an imaginary model of oxygen-hydrogen mixture system. We found that SRK EOS coupled with a well-employed CMR can reproduce the sound speed in the MD simulations within a relative error of several percent and that the CMR hardly increases the deviation of the SRK EOS in the single component. The present results suggest that the SRK EOS with the CMR cannot be the main factor to cause critical errors in the CFD based on RANS, which will give reliability to current CFD simulations for internal flows in a combustion chamber of a liquid rocket engine.</p>

  • Effects of dissolved gas on surface pressure of a hydrofoil under cavitation condition

    Dissolved gas in water is known as one of the factors which affect cavitation. The present study focuses on the effect of dissolved gas on cavitation around a hydrofoil, more specifically on the hysteresis of cavitation and surface pressure of the hydrofoil. The pressure measurement on a hydrofoil of Clark Y-11.7% was carried out under various dissolved gas conditions. Pressure in the test section was reduced stepwise from an atmospheric pressure to that in a super-cavitation condition, then was increased stepwise to the atmospheric pressure condition. Amount of dissolved oxygen (DO) was used as a parameter representing the degree of air content, and three DO conditions were set at low DO: under 30%, middle DO: around 50%, and high DO: over 70% of saturation under atmospheric pressure. Also, two angles of attack, 8 and 20 degrees were selected. Although there is no significant difference of the surface pressure and its hysteresis at the angle of attack of 8 degrees, dissolved gas seems to affect the behavior of cavitation. At the angle of attack of 20 degrees, it was found that the appearance of cavity was changed by DO conditions, and it would affect surface pressure of the foil. Under high DO condition, when the cavity oscillated with large amplitude, dissolved gas seemed to enhance the growth of the cavity, and the cavity tended to grow as covering the suction surface of the foil; it would make the time-averaged surface pressure of high DO condition lower than that of the other DO condition.

    The aim of this investigation is to develop a nano-hydro turbine that can effectively utilize the wasted hydraulic energy in infrastructure such as agricultural and industrial canals and irrigation waterways. Up to this time, the utilization of such a small hydropower has not progressed owing to economic reasons. Therefore, we focus on the Savonius type, which has the advantages of low manufacturing cost and excellent maintainability because of its simple structure. Conventionally, the Savonius type has been developed and researched as a vertical axis wind turbine. In order to effectively utilize the water surface flow, which is particular to open channels, we place the turbine runner perpendicular to the water flow and horizontally on the channel bottom. In the present study, we experimentally investigated the effect of the parameters for the turbine installation and its operation, namely distance between a runner and the water surface and the rotation direction of the runner, on the performance at each water level. As a result, it was found that the suitable installation depth differs depending on the rotation direction of the turbine.

    In this paper, a quantum effect of hydrogen molecules (uncertainties of each atomic nuclear position and momentum) on the bubble nucleation rate was investigated. The homogeneous bubble nucleation analyses were performed using a density functional theory (DFT) reflecting equations of state (EOSs) constructed to reproduce the thermophysical properties of hydrogen obtained from a classical molecular dynamics (MD) method and a quantum MD method. The results showed that the quantum nature of liquid hydrogen decreases the bubble nucleation rate when compared in the same reduced temperature and reduced superheat ratio condition. Further, it was indicated that the results might be caused by the increase of the energy barrier arising from the difference of the density profile and its position at the critical bubble (in other words, the differences of the critical bubble size and the liquid–vapor interface thickness). Furthermore, the DFT analysis was validated through the evaluation of the bubble nucleation rate using the classical MD method and the quantum MD method made as numerical experiments, and qualitatively the same result was obtained between the DFT and the MD simulations.

To effectively utilize the water surface flow, which is particular to open channels, we place the turbine runner perpendicular to the water flow and horizontally on the channel bottom. In our previous study, we experimentally investigated the effect of the turbine installation condition, which specifies the distance between a runner and the water surface, on the performance at each water level. As a result, it was clarified that there is a suitable turbine installation height for each water flow condition such as water level. Therefore, in this study, we visualized the flow fields paticular to Savonius type runners such as attached flow and dragging flow by PIV measurement and investigated the mechanism by which the turbine installation height brings about a difference in torque characteristics.</p>

    <p>Cavitation in fluid machinery can cause several problems such as degradation of performance, erosion, and so on. Therefore, the development of prediction methods for cavitation flow is an important research topic, and several cavitation models have been proposed. Multi-Process (MP) model, which is a homogenous one composed of multiple equations, can take account of main elementary processes in cavitation using the moment method for a size distribution function of cavitation bubbles. It is necessary to formulate the transport equations for each state variable based on appropriate assumptions. In this study, unsteady RANS simulation of the final stage model of a three-stage centrifugal pump using MP model was carried out to investigate the influence of the formulation of two kinds (types) of transport equations, i.e., advection-type and conservation-type. As a result, both types showed agreement with experiments in terms of head degradation curves, although differences were observed for cavity growth. In the conservation-type, bubble number density decreases in contrast to the increase in void fraction. It was confirmed that this suppresses the growth of cavities.</p>

    The aim of this investigation is improvement of the performance of Darrieus-Type hydraulic turbines operated in an open channel. Since the output power is very small in such a utilization of small hydropower, it is important to get more power for the cost reduction. In our previous experimental investigation, the performance of turbine runner installed near the side wall of the channel was better than that installed at the center of the channel. In order to enhance the output power, a flat guide was installed upstream of the runner on the opposite side of the side wall. In the present study, we parametrically investigate the effects of flow guiding angle and installation position of the guide on the turbine performance. Two-dimensional unsteady CFD simulations are carried out to qualitatively understand the flow mechanism leading to the better performance of turbine. As a result, it is found that the turbine performance can be significantly enhanced by the appropriately placed flow guide. This enhancement is found to be achieved by the improvement of turbine efficiency and the increase of the input power.

    Toward the enhancement of prediction accuracy of cavitation performance of hydraulic machinery under real fluid condition, which can enable us more reliable design and operation of machines, the present study has focused on one of the important real fluid factors against cavitation, that is a dissolved gas effect, and investigated the determination mechanism of internal pressure of cavity and the transport mechanism of dissolved gas including the mass transfer rate at cavity interface through direct pressure measurement, high-speed camera observation, flow measurement and etc. In addition, the numerical model of dissolved gas effect was proposed considering the actual physics behind the phenomena. Through the comparisons with experiments, the proposed model was well validated.

    日常生活で用いられる流動中の水道水を微視的に観察すると,肉眼ではまず捉えられない非常に小さな気泡(気泡核)が多数混在している.また,気泡核のサイズと気泡核の個数の関係(気泡核のサイズ分布)には,べき乗則と呼ばれる分布則が成り立つことが知られているが,この分布則に隠された気泡核の形成原理は解明されていない.本研究では,水中の代表的な不純物が気泡核のサイズ分布に及ぼす影響を計測により評価するとともに,この計測結果を模擬し得る気泡核形成モデルを,分子動力学シミュレーションと呼ばれる微視的な計算手法を援用したうえで構築する.これにより,気泡核の分布則に反映される気泡核の形成原理を明らかにする.
