    The microstructure is a critical factor governing the functionality of ceramic materials. Meanwhile, microstructural analysis of electron microscopy images of polycrystalline ceramics, which are geometrically complex and composed of countless crystal grains with porosity and secondary phases, has generally been performed manually by human experts. Objective pixel-based analysis (semantic segmentation) with high accuracy is a simple but critical step for quantifying microstructures. In this study, we apply neural network-based semantic segmentation to secondary electron images of polycrystalline ceramics obtained by three-dimensional (3D) imaging. The deep-learning-based models (e.g., fully convolutional network and U-Net) by employing a dataset based on a 3D scanning electron microscopy with a focused ion beam is found to be able to recognize defect structures characteristic of polycrystalline materials in some cases due to artifacts in electron microscopy imaging. Owing to the training images with improved depth accuracy, the accuracy evaluation function, intersection over union (IoU) values, reaches 94.6% for U-Net. These IoU values are among the highest for complex ceramics, where the 3D spatial distribution of phases is difficult to locate from a 2D image. Moreover, we employ the learned model to successfully reconstruct a 3D microstructure consisting of giga-scale voxel data in a few minutes. The resolution of a single voxel is 20 nm, which is higher than that obtained using a typical X-ray computed tomography. These results suggest that deep learning with datasets that learn depth information is essential in 3D microstructural quantifying polycrystalline ceramic materials. Additionally, developing improved segmentation models and datasets will pave the way for data assimilation into operando analysis and numerical simulations of in situ microstructures obtained experimentally and for application to process informatics.

    In this study, the Charpy impact test was performed for mechanically introducing cracks in A533B steel. Then, in situ weak-beam scanning transmission electron microscopy (WB-STEM) annealing tests were performed from room temperature to 600 °C. A wide area surface polishing method that did not require chemical polishing or resin-filling process for bulk specimens were developed for microsampling a 200 nm thin film. The film was sampled from the strain site at the crack tip (EBSD-KAM value: 2.7°) via Focus ion beam-scanning electron microscopy (FIB-SEM), i.e., the inhomogeneous plastic deformation zone of dislocation density above 2.5 × 1016 /m2 formed by Mn precipitates. In isochronous annealing process imaging, the dynamic behavior of dislocations was successfully visualized using movie files with a spatial resolution of 0.4 nm/pixel and a temporal resolution of 1s/frame via WB-STEM. Results revealed thermal relaxation of local strain as high density dislocations deformed into new subgrain boundaries via the geometrically necessary dislocation network at control temperatures from 500 °C to 550 °C.

    <p>Image analysis to identify the phases from microstructural images is an important issue for understanding the mechanism associated with the microstructures of functional polycrystalline materials. In this study, the segmentation ability of the deep learning model and the effect of data augmentation were investigated when applied to ceramic superconducting materials with different compositions than the trained materials.</p>

    Abstract

    Superconducting magnets based on high-temperature superconductors (HTSs) have become critical components in cutting-edge technologies such as advanced medical applications. In HTSs, weak links of superconductivity are inevitable at high-angle grain boundaries (GBs). Thus, two adjacent grains should be crystallographically aligned within the critical angle (θ<sub>c</sub>), for which the intergrain critical current density (J<sub>c</sub>) starts to decrease exponentially. The θ<sub>c</sub> of several iron-based superconductors (IBSs) is larger than that of cuprates. However, the decreases in both θ<sub>c</sub> and intergrain J<sub>c</sub> under magnetic fields for IBSs are still substantial, hampering their applications in polycrystalline forms. Here, we report that potassium-doped BaFe<sub>2</sub>As<sub>2</sub> (Ba122:K) exhibits superior GB performance to that of previously reported IBSs. A transport J<sub>c</sub> of over 0.1 MA/cm<sup>2</sup> across [001]-tilt GBs with misorientation angles up to θ<sub>GB</sub> = 24° was recorded even at 28 K, which is a required level for practical applications. Additionally, even in an applied magnetic field, θ<sub>c</sub> was unaltered, and the decay of the intergrain J<sub>c</sub> was small. Our results highlight the exceptional potential of Ba122:K for polycrystalline applications and pave the way for next-generation superconducting magnets.

    Abstract

    Iron-based high-temperature (high-T<sub>c</sub>) superconductors have good potential to serve as materials in next-generation superstrength quasipermanent magnets owing to their distinctive topological and superconducting properties. However, their unconventional high-T<sub>c</sub> superconductivity paradoxically associates with anisotropic pairing and short coherence lengths, causing challenges by inhibiting supercurrent transport at grain boundaries in polycrystalline materials. In this study, we employ machine learning to manipulate intricate polycrystalline microstructures through a process design that integrates researcher- and data-driven approaches via tailored software. Our approach results in a bulk Ba<sub>0.6</sub>K<sub>0.4</sub>Fe<sub>2</sub>As<sub>2</sub> permanent magnet with a magnetic field that is 2.7 times stronger than that previously reported. Additionally, we demonstrate magnetic field stability exceeding 0.1 ppm/h for a practical 1.5 T permanent magnet, which is a vital aspect of medical magnetic resonance imaging. Nanostructural analysis reveals contrasting outcomes from data- and researcher-driven processes, showing that high-density defects and bipolarized grain boundary spacing distributions are primary contributors to the magnet’s exceptional strength and stability.

    In this study, the microstructure of polycrystalline Co-doped BaFe2As2 superconducting bulks was comprehensively analyzed. The synthesis process involved ball milling and subsequent spark plasma sintering (SPS). A strong correlation between the microstructure and synthesis conditions was observed. Specifically, when mechanochemical synthesis of raw metal powders was carried out at a ball milling energy (EBM) of 100 MJ/kg, the resulting Co-BaFe2As2 bulk contained nanograins with a high density of planar defects and exhibited a high critical current density (Jc) under both magnetic and self-fields. The findings suggest that planar defects are one of the influential factors on the superconducting properties. Atomic-resolution microstructural characterization revealed that the planar defects are parallel to (001) and exhibit distinctive atomic arrangements. Atomic-resolution elemental mappings displayed a remarkable barium concentration in planar defects and grain boundaries compared to the BaFe2As2 matrix. Local strain fields were also observed around planar defects, especially near their edges. These nanoscale strain fields could be considered as volumetric pinning centers, and effectively pin flux vortices in the random crystal orientation, thereby increasing Jc in the Fe-based superconducting bulk. Additionally, an extended investigation was performed to include a K-doped BaFe2As2 bulk that exhibits similar planar defects. Based on the results of the microstructural analysis, speculations were mode on the evolution process of the microstructure during the preparation of BaFe2As2 bulks.

    Abstract

    Enhancing the mobility of lithium‐ions (Li<sup>+</sup>) through surface engineering is one of major challenges facing fast‐charging lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs). In case of demanding charging conditions, the use of a conventional artificial graphite (AG) anode leads to an increase in operating temperature and the formation of lithium dendrites on the anode surface. In this study, a biphasic zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF)‐AG anode, designed strategically and coated with a mesoporous material, is verified to improve the pathways of Li<sup>+</sup> and electrons under a high charging current density. In particular, the graphite surface is treated with a coating of a ZIF‐8‐derived carbon nanoparticles, which addresses sufficient surface porosity, enabling this material to serve as an electrolyte reservoir and facilitate Li<sup>+</sup> intercalation. Moreover, the augmentation in specific surface area proves advantageous in reducing the overpotential for interfacial charge transfer reactions. In practical terms, employing a full‐cell with the biphasic ZIF‐AG anode results in a shorter charging time and improved cycling performance, demonstrating no evidence of Li plating during 300 cycles under 3.0 C‐charging and 1.0 C‐discharging. The research endeavors to contribute to the progress of anode materials by enhancing their charging capability, aligning with the increasing requirements of the electric vehicle applications.

    In iron-based superconductors, randomly oriented grain boundaries have a strong influence on the transport properties via intrinsic weak-link and flux pinning mechanisms. Herein we report the critical current density (Jc) and the three-dimensional microstructure of polycrystalline bulk Co-doped Ba122 (BaFe1.84Co0.16As2) superconductors, with highly dense grain boundaries (grain size smaller than 50 nm), produced by high-energy milling. Three-dimensional electron microscopy revealed that the anomalous growth of secondary particles (aggregation) and the inter-aggregation structures were significantly different in the samples with finer grains, which may have extrinsically limited Jc. These important microstructural features were quantified as two parameters—local thickness and total pore length—by reconstructing the three-dimensional structure of the superconducting phase using the adaptive thresholding method. The results obtained in this study suggest that understanding and controlling the microstructural formation process by sintering are instrumental for improving the Jc properties of 122 polycrystalline materials consisting of ultrafine grains.

    Anomalous Nernst effect of epitaxial Fe4N films on MgO(001), MgAl2O4(MAO)(001), and SrTiO3(STO)(001) substrates grown by molecular beam epitaxy was investigated. Moderately large anomalous Nernst coefficients (S-ANE) of 1.4 and 1.7 mu V/K were obtained in the Fe4N films on the MgO(001) and MAO(001) substrates, respectively, and large anomalous Hall angles (similar to 0.06) and transverse thermoelectric conductivities [similar to 1.3 A/(m K)] were derived from the experimental results. On the other hand, a large effective S-ANE of 2.8 mu V/K was obtained in the Fe4N film on the STO(001) substrate. The origin of the enhanced effective SANE is the negatively large Seebeck coefficient (S-SE) in an oxygen deficient STO layer near the surface of the STO substrate. This indicates that it is possible to enhance the effective S-ANE of ferromagnetic materials by utilizing adjacent materials with large vertical bar S-SE vertical bar such as the oxygen deficient STO layer.     Iron-based superconductors are expected to be used in strong magnet applications owing to their excellent superconducting properties. The process of sintering a mechanically alloyed precursor powder is effective in achieving a high upper critical field and critical current density in BaFe2As2 (Ba122) polycrystalline bulk materials. However, when this process is applied to K-doped Ba122, which shows the highest critical temperature in the Ba122 family, suppressing the vaporization of potassium is challenging. In this study, spark plasma sintering (SPS) method was applied to K-doped Ba122 to achieve fast densification. In contrast to the conventional synthesis method, which requires several tens of hours, optimally K-doped bulks with near theoretical density were obtained after only 5 min of SPS, and the magnetic critical current density reached 105 A/cm2 at 5 K. The demonstrated superconducting properties suggest that this fast densification technique is a useful tool for applying K-doped Ba122 to bulk trapped field magnets.

    The typical experimental conditions inside a transmission electron microscope (TEM), such as ultra-high vacuum, high-energy electron irradiation, and surface effects of ultrathin TEM specimens, can be the origin of unexpected microstructural changes compared with that of bulk material during in situ thermal-annealing experiments. In this paper, we report on the microstructural changes of a Fe-15%Si alloy during in situ TEM annealing, where, in its bulk form, it exhibits an ordering transformation from D03 to B2 at 650 °C. Using a heating-pot type double tilt holder with a proportional-integral-differential control system, we observed the precipitation of α-Fe both at the sample surface and inside the sample. Surface precipitates formed via surface diffusion are markedly large, several tens of nm, whereas precipitates inside the specimen, which are surrounded by Fe-poor regions, reach a maximum size of 20 nm. This unexpected microstructural evolution could be attributed to vacancies on Si sites, which are induced due to high-energy electron irradiation before heating, as well as enhanced thermal diffusion of Fe atoms.

    In situ electron irradiation using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) was performed to visualize the Frank loop evolution in aluminum-copper (Al-Cu) alloy with an atomic-scale spatial resolution of 0.12 nm. The in situ HRTEM observation along the [110] direction of the FCC-Al lattice, Frank partial dislocation bounding an intrinsic stacking fault exhibited an asymmetrical climb along the (112) direction opposed to those in the reference pure Al under an electron irradiation, with a corresponding displacement-per-atom rate of 0.055- 0.120 dpa/s in a high vacuum (1.2 (c) 1015 Pa). We performed theoretical calculations to simulate the asymmetrical climb of the dislocation with Burgers vector b of 1/3(111).     We report relationships between the superconducting properties, microstructure and fabrication conditions in high-density MgB2 bulks fabricated using a premix-powder-in-closed-tube (PICT) method. The microstructure of the MgB2 bulks depends on the crystallinity of the initial B powders; use of crystalline B powders reduces the amount of MgB2 and increases re-sidual B and MgO. The heat treatment condition influences the grain sizes of MgB2 as well as the distribution and grain sizes of MgO. A lower temperature and a shorter duration of heat treatment tend to form fine grains of MgB2 and uniform dispersion of fine MgO particles. These microstructural variations influence the distribution of effective flux pinning centers such as grain boundaries and fine MgO particles. Different types of critical current density behavior as a function of magnetic field were meas-ured.

    核融合炉ダイバータは、過酷環境下において使用されることから諸特性に優れる金属材料の異種接合によって構成されている。一方で、異種金属界面は組織、特性において特異点となることから、本研究では、ダイバータ接合体組織設計指針提案のため、実用環境下におけるダ接合界面の組織定量追跡による新規評価技術の開発を行う。最終的には、材料組織学とデータ科学の融合により現象論から組織制御へと繋げ、プロセスへとフィードバックすることで、接合条件の最適化を行う。この成果は、核融合炉ダイバータにのみならず、照射環境下に置かれる多くの材料における材料開発の加速化を促進するものと考えられる。
