研究活動概要 主に、大自由度の非線形ダイナミクスの研究をおこなっている。 リミットサイクル振動子が相互作用すると、互いの振動数をそろえる引き込み現象がおこる。多数のリミットサイクル振動子が相互作用しあっている系に生じるマクロな引き込み現象を計算機シミュレーションを用いて解析してきた。統計力学でよく知られた相転移現象に似た協力現象が起こり、各振動子がばらばらに振動している状態から、マクロな数の振動子の振動数がそろった振動数凝縮相に遷移する。また、空間的に広がった系では、系のパラメ−タを上げていくと、一様な状態から、空間的に周期的なパタ−ンが生じ、さらにパラメ−タをあげると、さまざまな状態を通って時空カオス状態に遷移する。この遷移の過程を、系の詳細によらず理解するために、ギンツブルグーランダウタイプの振幅方程式を用いて研究してきた。特に周期パタ−ンが位相変調に対して不安定化したあとの振る舞いを詳しく解析し、位相記述の破綻から欠陥をふくむパタ−ンに移行することを示した。 そのほか、神経回路網や生態系、進化のような生物系を互いに相互作用しあっている多体系と見なし、その動的な振る舞いを調べている。 教育活動 大学1年生の力学同演習を担当 大学1,2年生の基礎物理学実験、コア科目「物質の世界」 大学院で応用数学、非線形物性学、量子物性学基礎などの講義を担当している。

    We report results of systematic analysis of confined steadily rotating patterns in the two-component BEC including the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) of the Rashba type, which acts in the interplay with the attractive or repulsive intra-component and inter-component nonlinear interactions and confining potential. The analysis is based on the system of the Gross-Pitaevskii equations (GPEs) written in the rotating coordinates. The resulting GPE system includes effective Zeeman splitting. In the case of the attractive nonlinearity, the analysis, performed by means of the imaginary-time simulations, produces deformation of the known two-dimensional SOC solitons (semi-vortices and mixed-modes). Essentially novel findings are reported in the case of the repulsive nonlinearity. They demonstrate patterns arranged as chains of unitary vortices which, at smaller values of the rotation velocity Ω, assume the straight (single-string) form. At larger Ω, the straight chains become unstable, being spontaneously replaced by a trilete star-shaped array of vortices. At still larger values of Ω, the trilete pattern rebuilds itself into a star-shaped one formed of five and, then, seven strings. The transitions between the different patterns are accounted for by comparison of their energy. It is shown that the straight chains of vortices, which form the star-shaped structures, are aligned with boundaries between domains populated by plane waves with different wave vectors. A transition from an axisymmetric higher-order (multiple) vortex state to the trilete pattern is investigated too.

    We introduce a system of propagation equations for the fundamental-frequency (FF) and second-harmonic (SH) waves in the bulk waveguide with the effective fractional diffraction and quadratic (χ(2)) nonlinearity. The numerical solution produces families of ground-state (zero-vorticity) two-dimensional solitons in the free space, which are stable in exact agreement with the Vakhitov–Kolokolov criterion, while vortex solitons are completely unstable in that case. Mobility of the stable solitons and inelastic collisions between them are briefly considered too. In the presence of a harmonic-oscillator (HO) trapping potential, families of partially stable single- and two-color solitons (SH-only or FF-SH ones, respectively) are obtained, with zero and nonzero vorticities. The single- and two-color solitons are linked by a bifurcation which takes place with the increase of the soliton's power.

    Several authors have reported that the echo state network reproduces bifurcation diagrams of some nonlinear differential equations using the data for a few control parameters. We demonstrate that a simpler feedforward neural network can also reproduce the bifurcation diagram of the logistics map and synchronization transition in globally coupled Stuart–Landau equations.

    Deterministic and stochastic coupled oscillators with inertia are studied on the rectangular lattice under the shear-velocity boundary condition. Our coupled oscillator model exhibits various nontrivial phenomena and there are various relationships with wide research areas such as the coupled limit-cycle oscillators, the dislocation theory, a block-spring model of earthquakes, and the nonequilibrium molecular dynamics. We show numerically several unique nonequilibrium properties of the coupled oscillators. We find that the spatial profiles of the average value and variance of the velocity become nonuniform when the dissipation rate is large. The probability distribution of the velocity sometimes deviates from the Gaussian distribution. The time evolution of kinetic energy becomes intermittent when the shear rate is small and the temperature is small but not zero. The intermittent jumps of the kinetic energy cause a long tail in the velocity distribution.

    We study two simple mathematical models of an epidemic. First, we study the repetitive infection spreading in a simplified susceptible–infected–recovered–susceptible (SIRS) model including the effect of the decay of the acquired immunity. The model is an intermediate of the SIRS model including the recruitment and death terms and the SIR model in which the recovered population is assumed to be never infected again. When the decay rate δ of the acquired immunity is sufficiently low, multiple infection spreading occurs in spikes. The model equation can be reduced to a map when the decay rate δ is sufficiently low, and the spike-like multiple infection spreading is reproduced in the mapping. The period-doubling bifurcation and chaos are found in the simplified SIRS model with seasonal variations. The nonlinear phenomena are reproduced using the map. Next, we study coupled SIRS equations for the directed evolution where the mutation is expressed with a diffusion-type term. A type of reaction–diffusion equation is derived by the continuum approximation for the infected population I. The reaction–diffusion equation with the linear dependence of infection rate on the type space has an exact Gaussian solution with a time-dependent average and variance. The propagation of the Gaussian pulse corresponds to the successive transitions of the dominant variant.

    There are various research topics such as stochastic resonance, coherent resonance, and neuroavalanche in excitable systems under external noises. We perform numerical simulation of coupled noisy FitzHugh-Nagumo equations on the square lattice. Excitation waves are generated most efficiently at an intermediate noise strength. The cluster size distributions obey a power-law-like distribution at a certain parameter range. However, we consider that this is not a self-organized critical phenomenon, partly because the exponent of the power law is not constant. We have studied the propagation of excitation waves in the coupled noisy FitzHugh-Nagumo equations with a one-dimensional pacemaker region and found that there is a phase-transition-like phenomenon from the short-range propagation to the whole-system propagation by changing the noise strength T. The power-law distribution is observed most clearly near the phase transition of the propagation of excitation waves in the coupled noisy FitzHugh-Nagumo equations without the one-dimensional pacemaker.

    An elliptical camphor-coated paper disk whose center of mass is fixed at the rotational axis rotates spontaneously with a constant angular velocity when placed on the surface of water. In our experiments, we observed bifurcation by controlling the water depth, i.e., the disk rotated and was stationary at higher and lower water depths, respectively. Further, the bifurcation type depended on the aspect ratio of the elliptical camphor disk; subcritical and supercritical bifurcations were observed in the high- and low-aspect-ratio experiments, respectively. Thus, the experiments and phenomenological models indicated that the friction between the acrylic rod as the rotational axis and the center pore of the disk penetrated by the rod determined the bifurcation type.

    In the mean-field approximation, the well-known effect of the critical quantum collapse in a 3D gas of particles pulled to the center by potential (Formula presented.) is suppressed by repulsive inter-particle interactions, which create the otherwise non-existing s-wave ground state. Here, we address excited bound states carrying angular momentum, with the orbital and magnetic quantum numbers l and m. They exist above a threshold value of the potential’s strength, (Formula presented.). The sectoral, tesseral, and zonal modes, which correspond to (Formula presented.), (Formula presented.), and (Formula presented.), respectively, are found in an approximate analytical form for relatively small values of (Formula presented.). Explicit results are produced for the p- and d-wave states, with (Formula presented.) and 2, respectively. In the general form, the bound states are obtained numerically, confirming the accuracy of the analytical approximation.

    We construct a family of bright optical solitons composed of fundamental-frequency (FF) and second-harmonic (SH) components in the one-dimensional (planar) waveguide with the quadratic (second-harmonic-generating) nonlinearity and effective fractional diffraction, characterized by the Lévy index α, taking values between 2 and 0.5, which correspond to the non-fractional diffraction and critical collapse, respectively. The existence domain and stability boundary for the solitons are delineated in the space of α, FF-SH mismatch parameter, and propagation constant. The stability boundary is tantamount to that predicted by the Vakhitov–Kolokolov criterion, while unstable solitons spontaneously evolve into localized breathers. A sufficiently weak transverse kick applied to the stable solitons excite small internal vibrations in the stable solitons, without setting them in motion. A stronger kick makes the solitons’ trajectories tilted, simultaneously destabilizing the solitons.

    The FitzHugh-Nagumo equation is a simple model equation that exhibits spiking. The output signal of a neuron is represented in the spiking frequency or firing rate. We consider a few control methods for spiking from the viewpoint of nonlinear dynamics. The repetitive spiking can be suppressed in the FitzHugh-Nagumo model by the periodic sinusoidal force with high frequency. We study the transition to the suppressed state numerically and perform a linear stability analysis to understand the suppression of the spiking. Next, we study coupled FitzHugh-Nagumo equations. We find that the periodic forcing makes the system chaotic, and the desynchronization induced by chaos weakens the total output of spiking in a certain parameter range. Finally, we propose a method of feedback control for the spiking frequency. We can get the desired spiking and bursting frequency using this feedback control. The feedback control method is analyzed using a mapping for the input.

    Vortex motion in coupled phase oscillator lattices is analogous to the dislocation motion in crystals. A single vortex exhibits a glide motion by force at the boundaries. Thermal fluctuations induce the glide motion even below the critical point corresponding to the Peierls stress. The random drift motion is approximated as a random walk in a tilted potential. If the temperature is high, vortices are spontaneously generated. A nonlinear response where the frequency profile is relatively flat in the central region and changes sharply near the boundaries is observed when the vortex density becomes large and nonuniform.

    We address effects of spin-orbit coupling (SOC), phenomenologically added to a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate composed of particles moving by Lévy flights, in one- and two-dimensional (1D) and (2D) settings. The corresponding system of coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations includes fractional kinetic-energy operators, characterized by the Lévy index, α < 2 (the normal kinetic energy corresponds to α = 2). The SOC terms, with strength λ, produce strong effects in the 2D case: they create families of stable solitons of the semi-vortex and mixed-mode types in the interval of 1 < α < 2, where the supercritical collapse does not admit the existence of stable solitons in the absence of the SOC. At λ → 0, amplitudes of these solitons vanish 1/4λ 1/(α-1).

    When an elliptical camphor-coated paper disk, with the center of mass fixed at the axis of rotation, is placed on the surface of water, it rotates spontaneously with a constant angular velocity. In experiments involving different water depths, we found that a subcritical bifurcation occurs; i.e., the camphor-coated disk remains at rest when the water depth is shallow, rotates when sufficiently deep, and exists in both the rotational and rest states at the intermediate depth. The camphor-coated disk exhibits a hula-hoop-like motion as it rotates. We propose a phenomenological model of this phenomenon that includes the effect of friction at the rotation axis. The model produces behaviors similar to the experimental results, such as the hula-hoop-like motion of the camphor-coated disk and the subcritical bifurcation. These results show that the friction is important for the emergence of both the subcritical bifurcation and the hula-hoop-like motion.

    We propose a coupled phase oscillator model with inertia and study the vortex motion in the model when the external force is applied at the boundaries. The vortex exhibits a glide motion when the external force is larger than a critical value. We find a transition from the pair annihilation to passing for the collision of the vortex and antivortex when the external force is changed. In the parameter range of the passing, a single vortex exhibits a reciprocal motion, which leads to desynchronization. When the external force is further increased, the multiplication of vortices occurs and the jump of the frequency profile increases. The desynchronization induced by the vortex motion is analogous to the plastic flow induced by the dislocation motion under the shear stress in solids. In perfect crystals without dislocations, the plastic flow hardly occurs. We further show that a vortex ring is generated when a vortex line passes through an impurity region, which corresponds to the Orowan loop in the theory of plasticity.

    Plumose pattern often appears on the fracture surface of drying pastes. We show a few experimental results of the crack propagation in the drying pastes. We find that the crack propagation sometimes exhibits jump motions. We have also performed an experiment of the crack propagation in a tilted container where the crack propagates from the deeper to shallower sides. This experimental result suggests the importance of the movement of water content. We propose a simple coupled map lattice model. In the numerical simulation, a plumose-like pattern appears owing to the instability of the flat surface of the fracture. The numerical simulation reproduces the jump motions in the crack propagation. We have performed another experiment where a vertical streak pattern appears when the crack propagates downward by cutting into the top surface of the drying paste. ©

    We study solitary wave states of self-propelled particles in the Ising-type Vicsek model. A strongly localized state appears after the rapid direction change of collective motion in the one-dimensional Ising-type Vicsek model. It is shown that this phenomenon occurs by the nucleation of a small population moving in the opposite direction and the subsequent sweeping-up process. This formation mechanism of the solitary wave state is different from the motility-induced phase separation. The solitary wave states maintained by stochastic direction changes also appear on triangular and square lattices in two dimensions.
