    Magnetic reconnection in laser-produced magnetized plasma is investigated by using optical diagnostics. The
    magnetic field is generated via the Biermann battery effect, and the inversely directed magnetic field lines interact
    with each other. It is shown by self-emission measurement that two colliding plasmas stagnate on a midplane,
    forming two planar dense regions, and that they interact later in time. Laser Thomson scattering spectra are
    distorted in the direction of the self-generated magnetic field, indicating asymmetric ion velocity distribution and
    plasma acceleration. In addition, the spectra perpendicular to the magnetic field show different peak intensity,
    suggesting an electron current formation. These results are interpreted as magnetic field dissipation, reconnection, and outflow acceleration. Two-directional laser Thomson scattering is, as discussed here, a powerful tool
    for the investigation of microphysics in the reconnection region.

    A developing supercritical collisionless shock propagating in a homogeneously magnetized plasma of ambient
    gas origin having higher uniformity than the previous experiments is formed by using high-power laser experiment. The ambient plasma is not contaminated by the plasma produced in the early time after the laser shot. While
    the observed developing shock does not have stationary downstream structure, it possesses some characteristics
    of a magnetized supercritical shock, which are supported by a one-dimensional full particle-in-cell simulation
    taking the effect of finite time of laser-target interaction into account.

    Magnetic reconnection is a universal process in space, astrophysical, and laboratory plasmas. It alters
    magnetic feld topology and results in energy release to the plasma. Here we report the experimental
    results of a pure electron outfow in magnetic reconnection, which is not accompanied with ion
    fows. By controlling an applied magnetic feld in a laser produced plasma, we have constructed an
    experiment that magnetizes the electrons but not the ions. This allows us to isolate the electron
    dynamics from the ions. Collective Thomson scattering measurements reveal the electron Alfvénic
    outfow without ion outfow. The resultant plasmoid and whistler waves are observed with the
    magnetic induction probe measurements. We observe the unique features of electron-scale magnetic
    reconnection simultaneously in laser produced plasmas, including global structures, local plasma
    parameters, magnetic feld, and waves.

    An experimental investigation of collisionless shock ion acceleration is presented using a multicomponent plasma and a high-intensity picosecond duration laser pulse. Protons are the only accelerated ions when a near-critical-density plasma is driven by a laser with a modest normalized vector potential. The results of particle-in-cell simulations imply that collisionless shock may accelerate protons alone selectively, which can be an important tool for understanding the physics of inaccessible collisionless shocks in space and astrophysical plasma.

    The mechanism of generating collisionless shock in magnetized gas plasma driven by laser-ablated target plasma is investigated by using one-dimensional full particle-in-cell simulation. The effect of finite injection time of target plasma, mimicking the finite width of laser pulse, is taken into account. It was found that the formation of a seed-shock requires a precursor. The precursor is driven by gyrating ions, and its origin varies depending on the injection time of the target plasma. When the injection time is short, the target plasma entering the gas plasma creates a precursor; otherwise, gas ions reflected by the strong piston effect of the target plasma create a precursor. The precursor compresses the background gas plasma, and subsequently, a compressed seed-shock forms in the gas plasma. The parameter dependence on the formation process and propagation characteristics of the seed-shock was discussed. It was confirmed that the seed-shock propagates through the gas plasma exhibiting behavior similar to the shock front of supercritical shocks.

    We investigate the competition of magnetic reconnections in self-generated and external magnetic fields in laser-produced plasmas. The temporal evolution of plasma structures measured with self-emission imaging shows the vertical expansions and horizontal separation of plasma, which can be signatures of reconnection outflows in self-generated and external magnetic fields, respectively. Because the outflows in self-generated magnetic fields are not clear in the presence of the external magnetic field, the external magnetic field can suppress the magnetic reconnection in self-generated magnetic fields.

    For the evaluation of impulse bit for pulsed-magnetic nozzle thruster, a thrust stand having high signal to noise ratio under large pulsed current conditions and high sensitivity with the impulse bit of micronewton-second has been developed. All electric components generating large pulsed current for the magnetic nozzle are on the arm of the torsional thrust stand, in order to suppress interactions between large current cables and/or between cables and vacuum chamber. The developed thrust stand has a minimum detection limit of 3 μNs. The impulse bit of magnetic nozzle with laser produced carbon plasma was successfully measured as 𝐼𝑏=5.0±0.6 μNs with a laser energy of 520 mJ and a magnetic field strength of 0.53 T at the initial target position.

    <p>A laser fusion rocket has been proposed for interplanetary flight. This rocket generates a high-energy plasma via laser-fusion and expels it via a magnetic nozzle. The magnetic nozzle is a key component for the rocket performance, and we have investigated the impulse bit generated from the magnetic nozzle by using simulations and experiments in relatively low energy regime of a few joules. In addition, the energy dependence on the thrust performance is an essential factor to evaluate and design the laser fusion rocket. Here, we conducted numerical simulations in energy regimes from a few joules to mega joules to understand the thrust performance both for small-scale experiments and for full-scale fusion rockets. We find that the momentum efficiency does not depend on the propellant mass, material, and plasma energies, and the impulse bit is expressed as the power-law of the plasma energy and mass. These relations are important for designing missions and for estimating the thrust of fusion rockets.</p>

    <p>A magnetic thrust chamber is a component of a propulsion system which obtain thrust from a plasma in using a magnetic field. A laser fusion rocket has been assumed to use this system and will be used for interplanetary flight. To realize this rocket, we need to investigate the thrust performance of the magnetic thrust chamber. Previous work has investigated the plasma behaviour and thrust using simulations and experiments. However, quantitative comparison has not been much. In this work, we quantitatively compared computational and experimental results of plasma behaviour and performance. It was observed that the impulse bit increases as the magnetic field strength however, results from the experiment were approximately 3 times larger than that of simulation.</p>

    Magnetic reconnection in laser-produced magnetized plasma is investigated by using optical diagnostics. The magnetic field is generated via the Biermann battery effect, and the inversely directed magnetic field lines interact with each other. It is shown by self-emission measurement that two colliding plasmas stagnate on a midplane, forming two planar dense regions, and that they interact later in time. Laser Thomson scattering spectra are distorted in the direction of the self-generated magnetic field, indicating asymmetric ion velocity distribution and plasma acceleration. In addition, the spectra perpendicular to the magnetic field show different peak intensity, suggesting an electron current formation. These results are interpreted as magnetic field dissipation, reconnection, and outflow acceleration. Two-directional laser Thomson scattering is, as discussed here, a powerful tool for the investigation of microphysics in the reconnection region.

    A developing supercritical collisionless shock propagating in a homogeneously magnetized plasma of ambient gas origin having higher uniformity than the previous experiments is formed by using high-power laser experiment. The ambient plasma is not contaminated by the plasma produced in the early time after the laser shot. While the observed developing shock does not have stationary downstream structure, it possesses some characteristics of a magnetized supercritical shock, which are supported by a one-dimensional full particle-in-cell simulation taking the effect of finite time of laser-Target interaction into account.

    Magnetic reconnection is a universal process in space, astrophysical, and laboratory plasmas. It alters magnetic field topology and results in energy release to the plasma. Here we report the experimental results of a pure electron outflow in magnetic reconnection, which is not accompanied with ion flows. By controlling an applied magnetic field in a laser produced plasma, we have constructed an experiment that magnetizes the electrons but not the ions. This allows us to isolate the electron dynamics from the ions. Collective Thomson scattering measurements reveal the electron Alfvénic outflow without ion outflow. The resultant plasmoid and whistler waves are observed with the magnetic induction probe measurements. We observe the unique features of electron-scale magnetic reconnection simultaneously in laser produced plasmas, including global structures, local plasma parameters, magnetic field, and waves.

    We present an experimental method to generate quasiperpendicular supercritical magnetized collisionless shocks. In our experiment, ambient nitrogen (N) plasma is at rest and well magnetized, and it has uniform mass density. The plasma is pushed by laser-driven ablation aluminum (Al) plasma. Streaked optical pyrometry and spatially resolved laser collective Thomson scattering clarify structures of plasma density and temperatures, which are compared with one-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations. It is indicated that just after the laser irradiation, the Al plasma is magnetized by a self-generated Biermann battery field, and the plasma slaps the incident N plasma. The compressed external field in the N plasma reflects N ions, leading to counterstreaming magnetized N flows. Namely, we identify the edge of the reflected N ions. Such interacting plasmas form a magnetized collisionless shock.

    出力エネルギーが数百 J ほどの高出力レーザーを固体に照射することで,およそ数百‐千 km/s にもおよぶ高 速プラズマ流を生成できる.このプラズマ流同士の衝突を考えると,その相対速度が非常に大きいため互いにほ ぼ無衝突と考えることができる.こういった無衝突対向プラズマを用いて,宇宙で普遍的に観測されるような無 衝突衝撃波を実験室に再現し,衝撃波の物理を詳細に調べる実験が行われている.ここでは磁場を介さない静電 無衝突衝撃波生成実験について,実験手法やその計測手法,これまでの実験結果,今後の展望について述べる.

  • 本論文では、プラズマの発光(熱制動放射)を計測し、その絶対強度を評価すると同時に、衝撃波が満たすべきランキン-ユゴニオの関係を考慮することで、温度・密度変化を評価し、衝撃波のマッハ数を決定する手法を提案した。通常、熱制動放射は密度に強く依存し、温度の依存性は小さいため、温度計測には向かない。しかし、衝撃波による温度・密度変化を評価することで、温度の計測を可能にし、比較的容易に衝撃波の性質を調査できることを示した。

  • 4つのコイルを周回状に組み合わせて磁気ノズルを形成し、各コイルに流す電流強度を制御して非対称な磁場構造を作ることで、レーザー生成プラズマの伝搬方向が制御できることを示した。プラズマは反磁性であるためプラズマ内部の磁場は減少する。レーザー照射ターゲット下方に置いた磁気プローブ(B-dot probe)で磁場を計測することで、上下に対称な磁気ノズルの場合と非対称な場合で明らかなプラズマ膨張の違いを検出した。さらに二次元輻射流体シミュレーションでレーザー照射によるプラズマ生成を、その計算結果を初期状態として三次元ハイブリッド計算(電子は慣性のない流体、イオンは粒子)を組み合わせることで、磁気ノズル内のプラズマ膨張と密度分布を再現するとともに、排出方向と運動量効率の関係を明らかにした。 この非対称磁気ノズルはレーザープラズマのみでなく、多くの宇宙推進システムやプラズマ基礎実験に応用可能と考えられる。

    磁気リコネクションは、実験室から宇宙まで、あらゆるプラズマ中で磁場構造変化の時間スケールを決め、宇宙線の加速機構としても注目されている。しかし、リコネクション率を定量的に説明できず、磁場からプラズマへのエネルギー変換を定量的に説明できない。レーザー生成プラズマを用いると、高温・高密度・高ベータとこれまでにないパラメータで実験でき、プラズマ計測も発展しつつある。そこで、磁場が繋ぎ替わるミクロな磁場拡散領域とプラズマ構造を同時計測し、リコネクション率とエネルギー変換を定量的に明らかにする。またリコネクション領域に励起されるプラズマ波動、粒子の加速、リコネクション率との関連を計測から明らかにする。

    本研究の目的は、近年 国内外で開発が進んできたパワーレーザーを用いて我が国オリジナルのレーザーを用いた実験室宇宙物理学「レーザー宇宙物理学」により、宇宙・天体プラズマ物理の長年の未解決問題である「無衝突衝撃波による宇宙線加速」の要素物理を明らかにすることである。

    従来の宇宙輸送システムを一新するレーザー核融合ロケットの研究において、世界に先駆けて模擬実験を行い、レーザー核融合ロケットの可能性を実証してきた。しかしながら、実証の過程において、数値解析と検証実験では5倍の差があり、数値解析で考慮されていない物理が存在する事が明らかになった。その候補の一つがデタッチメント、すなわちプラズマが磁力線から離脱するかどうかである。そこで、デタッチメントの検証に必要な、電子の速度ベクトルや磁場変化を十分な精度で計測する手法を確立しつつ、デタッチメントが検証できるように数値解析を高度化し、実験と数値解析の両面から、デタッチメント現象の背後にある物理機構を解明する。

    In an ultra-strong magnetic field plasma, the flow velocity becomes almost the speed of light, and particle acceleration occurs due to relativistic magnetic reconnection. Basic magnetic reconnection experiments were performed using a 100-T-class anti-parallel strong magnetic field obtained by irradiating two coil targets with a high-energy laser.
    It is suggested that when a high-intensity laser is injected into a plasma with a near-critical density, plasma instability occurs, several tens of kT of self-generated turbulent magnetic field islands appear, and relativistic magnetic reconnection acceleration occurs. As a preliminary experiment to measure the temporal and spatial evolution of the filament structure due to this instability using an X-ray free-electron laser, we generated and measured a three-dimensional plasma by irradiating a rod assembly target with a high-intensity laser.

    ホールスラスタの推力電力比向上を阻害する電子の異常輸送に関して、異常輸送の物理機構解明のために、プラズマ揺動と異常輸送の関係を調査した。ある特定のプラズマ揺動は乱流の様相を示し、この揺動が放電電流と相関関係があることを明らかにした。さらにこの揺動は電離不安定性とも非線形結合していることが明らかになった。並行して数百Hzの低周波揺動も観察され、この低周波揺動がプラズマの乱流を抑制することを示唆された。並行して、これまで困難であったホールスラスタ内部のプラズマ諸量計測のために、ピコ秒レーザー診断法を開発し、その優位性を示した。本手法により、異常輸送と揺動間の定量的な関係解明に貢献する。

  • 九州大学大学院総合理工学研究院の山本直嗣教授らは、IHIエアロスペース(東京都江東区)などと、高出力で低燃費な「レーザー核融合ロケット」の実現に向けて共同研究を始めた。レーザー核融合ロケットの模擬実験と数値シミュレーションを行い、研究開発を進める。 光産業創成大学院大学や大阪大学レーザー科学研究所、広島大学、米パデュー大学、明石工業高等専門学校が参加する。期間は2023年3月までの3年間。 レーザー核融合ロケットは、推進させるための燃料が入った球状プラスチック容器にレーザー光を当て、生成される「核融合プラズマ」をロケット外に排出することで推力を得る。研究グループが行う実験では、中が空洞の球状プラスチック容器にレーザー光を当てて加熱し、プラズマを発生させる。レーザー光の出力エネルギーを変え、得られる推力の変化量から両者の関係性を導く。阪大が所有する数キロジュールのレーザー光の出力装置を使って研究を進める。 有人での月や火星の探査に向けた研究開発が各国で進められている。核融合プラズマを推進剤とするレーザー核融合ロケットは、他の技術と比べて大推力や低燃費が実現できる。そのため、地球から火星まで数年かかると言われている飛行時間を3カ月間に短縮することが期待できる。 Newspaper, magazine

    九州大学大学院総合理工学研究院の山本直嗣教授らは、IHIエアロスペース(東京都江東区)などと、高出力で低燃費な「レーザー核融合ロケット」の実現に向けて共同研究を始めた。レーザー核融合ロケットの模擬実験と数値シミュレーションを行い、研究開発を進める。
    光産業創成大学院大学や大阪大学レーザー科学研究所、広島大学、米パデュー大学、明石工業高等専門学校が参加する。期間は2023年3月までの3年間。
    レーザー核融合ロケットは、推進させるための燃料が入った球状プラスチック容器にレーザー光を当て、生成される「核融合プラズマ」をロケット外に排出することで推力を得る。研究グループが行う実験では、中が空洞の球状プラスチック容器にレーザー光を当てて加熱し、プラズマを発生させる。レーザー光の出力エネルギーを変え、得られる推力の変化量から両者の関係性を導く。阪大が所有する数キロジュールのレーザー光の出力装置を使って研究を進める。
    有人での月や火星の探査に向けた研究開発が各国で進められている。核融合プラズマを推進剤とするレーザー核融合ロケットは、他の技術と比べて大推力や低燃費が実現できる。そのため、地球から火星まで数年かかると言われている飛行時間を3カ月間に短縮することが期待できる。
