With the rapid spread of renewable energy, the utilizing residential air conditioners (AC) for demand response (DR) is gaining importance. As resource aggregators seek to manage the flexibility offered by a large number of AC units, accurately estimating the DR potential of ACs is essential for successful bidding in the balancing market. This study introduced a data-driven method that leverages measured electricity data from residential ACs to evaluate the DR potential and estimate the room temperature without the complex model of thermal conduction. The proposed method comprises three components: estimating the AC turn-on/off states, calculating time-dependent parameters for room temperature estimation, and determining the room temperature and AC electricity consumption after DR implementation. A case study was conducted using data from 479 dwellings in Osaka, Japan, to assess the downward DR potential during the cooling season. Results indicate a median DR potential ranging from 9.2% to 18.7% of total AC electricity consumption. This study provides valuable insights into leveraging residential ACs as flexible resources for demand response, empowering resource aggregators to make informed decisions in a balanced market.

Children in developing countries such as India will experience severe consequences of climate change. Primary school students, in particular, are the most vulnerable to extreme weather conditions, such as heat waves intensifying due to climate change. This will adversely impair their development, well-being, and learning outcomes. However, significant research gaps exist in understanding and mitigating children’s vulnerabilities. There is an urgent need for a deeper understanding of the impact of heat waves on children’s health and well-being in India. Further, the discussion on the state of heat safety in Indian primary schools is limited. This study addresses these gaps by surveying 335 primary school teachers in seven Indian cities. The data gathered from the field survey offers a better understanding of classroom experiences and challenges encountered by children and teachers during heat waves. It underscores several aspects of students’ vulnerability to heat exposure and its adverse impact on their health, such as absence from school, physical symptoms of heat distress, etc. Furthermore, it highlights the pressing need for classroom heat risk management in light of climate change and makes several policy prescriptions in primary schools.

Prolonged exposure to indoor dampness in dwellings triggers excessive mould, causing health problems for residents and damage to building structures. This study investigated dampness and mould growth in low-cost dwellings in the slum districts of Surakarta, Indonesia. A VTT mould growth model predicted mould risk in 17 dwellings by employing a set of time-series data of indoor air temperature and relative humidity (RH). Interviews were conducted with 11 houses to understand the residents’ perceptions and lifestyles related to mould risk. The daily average dampness (RH > 80%) ranged from 2.2 to 12.3 h. Low-cost dwellings with plywood board walls had a high risk of cumulative mould growth. Statistical correlation analysis revealed that volumetric heat capacity was significantly positively correlated with mould growth at higher percentiles (75th and 97.5th). Thus, dwellings with smaller volumes and plywood board walls were more susceptible to moulding. Moreover, the majority of the participants expressed dissatisfaction with indoor air quality owing to the presence of unpleasant odours from sewage and dampness, which coincided with their perception of inadequate air ventilation. This study provides a reference for developing standard guidelines for building and upgrading dwellings in Indonesia, focusing on assessing and mitigating mould risks and ensuring moisture safety.

Classroom thermal comfort has a direct effect on student health and educational outcomes. However, measuring thermal comfort (TC) is a non-trivial task. It is represented by several subjective metrics e.g., Thermal Sensation Vote, Thermal Comfort Vote, Thermal Preference Vote, etc. Since machine learning (ML) is being increasingly used to predict occupant comfort, multiple TC metrics for the same indoor space may yield contradictory results. This poses the challenge of selecting the most suitable single TC metric or the minimal TC metric combination for a given indoor space. Ideally, it will be a metric that can be used to predict all other TC metrics and occupant behavior with high accuracy. This work addresses this problem by using a primary student thermal comfort dataset gathered from 11 schools and over 500 unique students. A comprehensive evaluation is carried out through hundreds of TC prediction models using several ML algorithms. It evaluates the ability of TC metrics to predict (a) other TC metrics, and (b) the adaptive behavior of primary students. An algorithm is proposed to select the most suitable single TC metric or the minimal TC metric input combination. Results show that ML models can accurately predict all TC metrics and occupant-adaptive behavior using a small subset of TC metrics with an average accuracy as high as 79%. This work also found Thermal Sensation Vote to be the most significant single TC predictor, followed by Thermal Satisfaction Level. Interestingly, satisfaction with clothing was found to be as equally relevant as thermal preference. Furthermore, the impact of seasons and choice of ML algorithms on TC metric and occupant behavior prediction is shown.

The use of an air conditioner (AC) becomes essential, particularly in a hot and humid climate, to provide a comfortable environment for human activities. The setpoint is the agreed temperature that the building will meet, and the use of the lowest setpoint temperature to accelerate the cooling of indoor spaces should be avoided. A comprehensive field study was conducted under various cooling temperature settings in two student activity rooms in a university building in Malaysia, so as to understand respondents’ characteristics and behavior toward AC usage, to estimate the comfort at various indoor temperatures, to develop an adaptive model of thermal comfort in AC spaces, and to compare the comfort temperature with related local and international indoor thermal environmental standards. The findings indicated that water intake and clothing insulation affected personal thermal comfort. Moreover, the mean comfort temperature for respondents was 24.3 °C, which is within an indoor thermal comfort zone of 23–27 °C. The findings suggest that the preference of occupants living in a hot and humid region for lower temperatures means that setting temperatures lower than 24 °C might underestimate the indoor comfort temperature. Additionally, an adaptive relationship can be derived to estimate the indoor comfort temperature from the prevailing outdoor temperature.

Understanding occupants’ behaviours (OBs) of heating and cooling use in dwellings is essential for effectively promoting occupants’ behavioural change for energy saving and achieving efficient demand response operation. Thus, intensive research has been conducted on data collection, statistical analysis, and modelling of OBs. However, the majority of smart metres currently deployed worldwide monitor only the total household consumption rather than appliance-level load. Therefore, estimating the turn-on/off state of specific home appliances from the measured household total electricity referred to as non-intrusive load monitoring (NILM), has gained research attention. However, the current NILM methods overlook the specific features of inverter-controlled heat pumps (IHPs) used for space heating/cooling; thus, they are unsuitable for detecting OBs. This study presents a rule-based method for identifying the occupants’ intended operation states of IHPs based on a statistical analysis of load data monitored at 423 dwellings. This method detects the state of IHPs by subtracting the power of sequential-operation appliances other than IHPs from the total household power. Three time-series characteristics, including the durations of power-on/off states and power differences between power-off/on states, were used for this purpose. The performance of the proposed method was validated, indicating an F-score of 0.834.

In this study, the velocity field in a naturally ventilated building within an urban-like array was explored using large-eddy simulations. Reduced-scale building models were used to examine the impacts of the geometric conditions in the surrounding buildings and cross-ventilating windows on the flow statistics and instantaneous velocity fields in the sheltered building. The instantaneous velocity components averaged in the opening area were calculated for each condition of the building arrays and openings. The results indicate that the surrounding urban geometry significantly affects the turbulent opening velocities. Additionally, the three-dimensional instantaneous velocity distributions within the target building clearly demonstrate considerable differences under the different building and opening conditions. Such differences also affect the mean, maximum, and minimum wind speeds within the indoor regions. Moreover, the distributions of the two-point correlation coefficient (defined by the velocities normal to the windows at the center of the windward opening and inside the building) were compared for each condition. The strong correlations near the two openings indicate that the instantaneous velocity generated by the surrounding buildings is an important factor in determining the statistical and instantaneous features of indoor ventilating airflows.

Owing to the high energy demand of buildings, which accounted for 36% of the global share in 2020, they are one of the core targets for energy-efficiency research and regulations. Hence, coupled with the increasing complexity of decentralized power grids and high renewable energy penetration, the inception of smart buildings is becoming increasingly urgent. Data-driven building energy management systems (BEMS) based on deep reinforcement learning (DRL) have attracted significant research interest, particularly in recent years, primarily owing to their ability to overcome many of the challenges faced by conventional control methods related to real-time building modelling, multi-objective optimization, and the generalization of BEMS for efficient wide deployment. A PRISMA-based systematic assessment of a large database of 470 papers was conducted to review recent advancements in DRL-based BEMS for different building types, their research directions, and knowledge gaps. Five building types were identified: residential, offices, educational, data centres, and other commercial buildings. Their comparative analysis was conducted based on the types of appliances and systems controlled by the BEMS, renewable energy integration, DR, and unique system objectives other than energy, such as cost, and comfort. Moreover, it is worth considering that only approximately 11% of the recent research considers real system implementations.

Occupants' behaviors (OBs) toward air conditioning (AC) usage in residential buildings have a strong influence on diverse time patterns of load profiles; thus, various stochastic OB modeling has been proposed. However, the validity of such models has not been fully assessed with metered data, particularly for modeling AC switching-off actions. In this study, the AC operation behavior of 20 dwellings in Japan was observed during the summer. The occurrence of AC-use events identified from the measured data was analyzed in relation to the time slot of an event, thermal conditions, and frequency of AC usage in each dwelling. The results exhibited a difference between switch-on and switch-off actions; the former is primarily dominated by indoor temperature because of thermal adaptation behavior, while the latter is more habitual. Based on this analysis, this study proposed a revised algorithm to synthesize AC operation schedules, which expresses the switch-off action as the probability of the duration of an AC-use event rather than a state transition probability function. The proposed algorithm can be incorporated into dynamic building energy simulations. The validity of the revised algorithm was also demonstrated through comparison with the measured data.

This study investigated children’s perceptions and adaptive behaviors related to indoor thermal conditions of classrooms in primary schools with no air-conditioning systems during both summer and winter in Dehradun City, Uttarakhand, India. Responses were collected from 5297 school children aged 6–13 years. During the measurement periods, 100% and 94% of the samples were obtained under conditions outside an 80% thermally acceptable comfort range in winter and summer, respectively. The analysis using receiver operating characteristics suggested that the students had the least sensitivity to the temperature variation for all scales of the thermal sensation vote (TSV). Approximately 95.1% of students were “very satisfied”, “satisfied”, or “slightly satisfied” with the thermal conditions under the condition of “extreme caution” or “danger” of heat risk. In contrast, adaptive thermal behaviors, such as adjusting clothing insulation ensembles, opening or closing classroom windows and doors, and utilizing ceiling fans, were found to be the most affordable options for optimizing indoor thermal comfort. Children’s reports of thermal sensations and thermal satisfaction did not correspond to the actual physical environment. This draws attention to the adequacy of applying widely used methods of TSV-based identification of the thermal comfort range in classrooms for children, especially in hot environments. The findings of this study are expected to serve as an evidence-based reference for local governments and authorities to take appropriate measures to mitigate heat risks for schoolchildren in the future.

Gers, which are traditional mobile tents used by nomadic society of Mongolia, are currently used for urban habitats, and pollutants emitted from coal stoves used in urban gers are one of the major causes of air pollution in Ulaanbaatar in winter. Replacing coal stoves with low-emission heating devices in ger housing is, therefore, a pressing issue. Nevertheless, fuel stoves have been used in gers for generation since the nomadic period, and a previous study reported that urban ger residents were generally satisfied with the indoor environment heated by a coal stove. Against this background, the present study aimed—based on field measurements—to characterize the spatial and temporal characteristic of the thermal environment within gers heated by coal stoves, to provide insights for smoothly shifting the current stoves to electric heating. The measurement results showed diverse daily fluctuations of indoor temperature among days and households dominated by the unstable heating power of stoves, which is influenced by the occupants' style of coal input. The indoor air temperature occasionally resulted in outliers beyond the comfort temperature range. By contrast, the operative temperature was above the lower limit of the ASHRAE comfort range for over 70% of the time owing to the direct radiation of stoves, highlighting that the current design of gers and the use of fuel stove are reasonable to achieve a comfortable indoor environment in winter under the conditions of nomadic mobile dwellings, which necessitates a lightweight envelope with poor insulation performance.

Modern power grids face the challenge of increasing renewable energy penetration that is stochastic in nature and calls for accurate demand predictions to provide the optimized power supply. Hence, increasing the self-consumption of renewable energy through demand response in households, local communities, and micro-grids is essential and calls for high demand prediction performance at lower levels of demand aggregations to achieve optimal performance. Although many of the recent studies have investigated both macro and micro scale short-term load forecasting (STLF), a comprehensive investigation on the effects of electrical demand aggregation size on STLF is minimal, especially with large sample sizes, where it is essential for optimal sizing of residential micro-grids, demand response markets, and virtual power plants. Hence, this study comprehensively investigates STLF of five aggregation levels (3, 10, 30, 100, and 479) based on a dataset of 479 residential dwellings in Osaka, Japan, with a sample size of (159, 47, 15, 4, and 1) per level, respectively, and investigates the underlying challenges in lower aggregation forecasting. Five deep learning (DL) methods are utilized for STLF and fine-tuned with extensive methodological sensitivity analysis and a variation of early stopping, where a detailed comparative analysis is developed. The test results reveal that a MAPE of (2.47–3.31%) close to country levels can be achieved on the highest aggregation, and below 10% can be sustained at 30 aggregated dwellings. Furthermore, the deep neural network (DNN) achieved the highest performance, followed by the Bi-directional Gated recurrent unit with fully connected layers (Bi-GRU-FCL), which had close to 15% faster training time and 40% fewer learnable parameters.

In recent years, a bottom-up approach based on building-energy simulations coupled with stochastic modelling of occupant behaviours has been intensively developed to properly estimate the effect of diverse and stochastic occupant behaviours on energy loads, mainly for developing smart building-energy-management systems and the promotion of renewable energy sources. Considering this background, the objective of this study is to elucidate the modelling of the state transitional probability of occupants’ heat pump (HP) use embedded in most bottom-up approaches based on statistical analysis of the 2-year electricity data of 586 dwellings. The analysis results clearly suggested that the relationship between daily hours of HP use and the daily mean outdoor air temperature has seasonal differences, in which frequency of HP use in early summer and early winter is lower than that in late summer and late winter under the same daily mean outdoor air temperature conditions. In addition, the authors presented statistical models of daily HP use hours with an explanatory variable of outdoor temperature for a lapse of 10 days to model the seasonal influence, and showed better performance compared to the model expressed by daily mean outdoor temperature. Furthermore, the authors revealed that such a seasonal change in behaviour is attributed to the state transitional probability of cooling use as a function of indoor thermal conditions based on a numerical simulation of the bottom-up approach. Finally, the authors proposed a revised model with the state transitional probability considering seasonal behaviour change, and the estimation results of household cooling use are consistent with the measured data.

Remote work (working from home) became a norm rather than an exception for the global workforce during the COVID-19 pandemic, influencing every facet of life in both positive and negative ways. The stringent action of the Malaysian government in enacting the Movement Control Order (MCO) motivated the investigation of its impact on the energy consumption behaviour of working people regarding air-conditioner (AC) use. To this end, this study conducted a cross-sectional survey through an online platform. An ordinal logistic regression model (ORL) was used to analyse the collected data of 1873 respondents to determine the factors influencing the ordinal variable of interest, AC-usage behaviour during remote work. Next, the variable with unordered categories, the MCO-induced change in AC-usage behaviour, was analysed using a multinomial regression model (MLT) to identify the potential determinants. Finally, a reason analysis unveiled aspects behind the transition in AC use during remote work. This study identified stopping AC use during remote work despite using it at the office before the MCO period as the most significant change in AC-usage behaviour due to MCO. This change was frequently adopted by people with medium-level incomes and high electricity bills. By contrast, participants unfamiliar with their electricity bill were most likely to start AC use during remote work, although they did not use it before the MCO. Participants working remotely in the communal spaces of their houses preferred to stop using ACs during MCO compared to private room users. Furthermore, age group and ethnicity significantly influenced AC-usage behaviour in remote work and changes in such demeanours. These findings recommend policy interventions to expedite limited AC use for a sustainable energy sector, even during future climatic emergencies.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications in building performance prediction for environmental sustainability outcomes play a significant role in compensating for computationally incompetent and expensive approaches to solving increasingly complex optimization problems. Although machine-learning-based surrogate models (SMs), one of the many AI approximation strategies for higher-order models, have long been utilized in sophisticated optimization studies in various fields, their reliability in the field of sustainable and low-energy architectural design is now being extensively explored. To comprehend the effectiveness of applying state-of-the-art surrogate-assisted optimization methodologies for building energy performance, this study presents a comprehensive review of recent studies aimed at identifying innovative theories and critical factors for each component of the optimization process. Considering passive form and envelope design variables, seventy-two relevant studies from the Scopus database were selected for review after screening. The results, including the current trends for surrogate modeling and optimization methods, accuracy levels of SMs, extent of building performance improvement, and decisive building design variables, are thoroughly discussed according to the varying conditions of each study. Finally, a further discussion of recent methodological advancements and limitations can help identify potential approaches and challenges for future research.

Courtyard buildings embraced as a passive design paradigm, find wide application in modulating outdoor climatic conditions and fostering energy efficiency. Consequently, exploring passive strategies to mitigate the repercussions of climate change becomes a compelling priority. However, previous studies have predominantly emphasized the daytime performance of traditional courtyards in hot climates, often overlooking their performance throughout the entire day. This oversight includes the impact of courtyards in releasing stored heat into the air during nighttime, commonly referred to as "the reversed impact of the courtyard." This study evaluates the reversed thermal impact of glazed “modernized” courtyard envelope during nighttime and day-exposed radiation. This analysis considers the complex interaction between incoming and outgoing radiation flows. The study employed a combined approach involving onsite measurements and numerical simulations centered upon an educational building within a hot-arid zone. The scope of the study encompasses diverse courtyard geometries and various mitigation strategies, all characterized by heightened proportions of glazed surface areas. The results, depending on prevailing weather conditions, reveal the potential for these factors to reduce heating time from 17 h to just 2 h at the optimum. In contrast, there is an increase in cooling impact, ranging from 7 to 22 h throughout both day and night, with scenarios representing the least and most favorable cases, respectively. For designing processes, optimizing aspect ratio without exceeding 1.6 and glazed façade orientation is essential to control multi-reflection at the modernized courtyard envelope criteria. Maintaining air quality within building spaces is a challenge under the increased pollutants resources. The optimization of the courtyard building layout toward natural ventilation has emerged as a critical factor in shaping air quality conditions. This study delves into the assessment of outdoor air quality infiltration within a dual courtyard typology characterized by varying proportions and orientations for both the connecting link and openings. To comprehensively analyse air quality within these integrated courtyards, a combination of on-site particle dispersion measurements and flow pattern simulations were employed. The outcomes of this investigation highlight the pronounced impact of atmospheric conditions, particularly wind direction, on the performance of courtyard configurations. The results revealed that dual courtyard provide an approach to address the geometric conflict between thermal comfort and air quality optimization. Even in circumstances with limited flow velocity, the direct connection between courtyards deepens the upward recirculating flow into the courtyard cavity at the activity level. The optimal air quality is attained by planning each courtyard's upper-level intake and outflow openings, as it provides an evacuation flow out of court cavity and decline the PNC than outside surrounding conditions.

A series of surveys of Surakarta’s urban slum housings revealed significant issues with water and sewerage systems, along with prolonged indoor discomfort, posing comfort and heat stroke risks for residents. In addition, a questionnaire survey of 332 residents in newly constructed districts as part of an urban slum improvement program showed improvements in privacy and leak frequency. However, many residents reported hotter and less comfort indoor thermal condition and poorer air quality. Addressing these challenges involves optimizing design and planning processes to enhance indoor comfort within limited budgets and exploring cost-effective architectural solutions.

Building on safety and broad acceptance of healthcare policy, we agree that human behavior is substantial because its success depends on an individual's contribution, ethnic, economic, and social status. We present three surveys testing this account for imminent hypothetical COVID-19 vaccines in Bangladesh, Indonesia, and Malaysia to study to find the acceptance and willingness-to-pay (WTP) for a vaccine in a social context. We used the contingent valuation (CV) method to estimate WTP in Bangladesh, Malaysia, and Indonesia. The statistical ANOVA estimation mode was supposed to measure the critical factors of vaccine acceptance and WTP for three vaccines and compare the associated characteristics with conventional epidemic vaccination models. The studies investigated how an individual's vaccination behavior depends on disease severity, geographical proximity, and socioeconomic similarity. Our results demonstrate that increasing vaccine uptake has a significant impact on vaccine efficacy and disease severity, while self-reported vaccine preferences were associated with factors such as lack of education and economic conditions.

The outbreak of the SARS-CoV-2 virus forced people to work from home. This study aimed to examine the relationship between residents' mental stress, indoor environment quality (IEQ), preventive behaviors, and socioeconomic status (SES) in Indonesia by using a cross-sectional study with a questionnaire survey in Indonesia. A total of 1004 valid responses were obtained during the survey during the COVID-19 pandemic period (November-December 2021). Logistic regression and odds ratio (OR) was used to evaluate the association between the possibility of mental stress and sleeplessness relying on the classified group of income, education, and age. In addition, a structural equation model (SEM) was used to analyze the inter-relationship between these characteristics and their effects on mental stress and sleeplessness as a crisis variable. The results indicate that mental stress was more inclined among low-income households during the COVID-19 pandemic than middle-up and high-income groups, with OR = 0.48 and 0.50, respectively. Moreover, the SEM suggested that SES also had significant direct effects (p-value < 0.05) on preventive behaviors (ω = 0.105), IEQ (ω =0.102), and crisis (ω = -0.237). It evidenced that the higher socioeconomic levels could have less possibility of experiencing a crisis. The findings of this study could add to practical implications that support the researchers and public policy stakeholders in mitigating the long-term effect of COVID-19 in Indonesia related to mental health and indoor environments.

Occupant behavior (OB) has a significant impact on household air-conditioner (AC) energy use. In recent years, bottom-up simulation coupled with stochastic OB modeling has been intensively developed for estimating residential AC consumption. However, a comprehensive analysis of the diverse behavioral preference patterns of occupants regarding AC use is hampered by the limited availability of large-scale residential energy demand data. Therefore, this study aimed to develop a prediction model for the residential household’s AC usage considering various OB-related diversity patterns based on monitoring data of appliance-level electricity use in a residential community of 586 households in Osaka, Japan. First, individual operation schedules and thermal preferences were identified and quantitatively extracted as the two main factors for the diverse behaviors across the whole community. Then, a clustering analysis classified the target households, finding four typical patterns for schedule preferences and three typical patterns for thermal preferences. These results were used, with time and meteorological data in the summer seasons of 2013 and 2014, as inputs for the proposed prediction model using Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost). The optimized XGBoost model showed a satisfactory prediction performance for the on/off state in the testing dataset, with an F1 score of 0.80 and an Area under the Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) Curve (AUC) of 0.845.

In 2019, buildings accounted for 55% of the global electricity demand, making them a key contributor to global emissions and a core target for energy efficiency, energy reduction, and policies and measures promoting renewable energy usage. Reinforcement learning (RL) is an agent-based modelling technique that has proven successful in many applications, particularly in artificial intelligence. RL has attracted research attention owing to its utilization in building energy management (BEM) applications. In this work, the latest research advances that utilize this method are investigated and discussed, primarily its usage in modelling complex building energy problems, building energy consumption control, optimization for comfort and cost savings, and the enhancement of demand forecasting algorithms. Furthermore, the combination of RL with other deep learning methods is discussed. As a state-of-the-art technology in smart grid building applications, RL is applied for control purposes and forecasting enhancement.

The diverse occupant’s behaviour (OB) has been identified as a significant impact on household air-conditioner (AC) energy use. However, the stochastic feature of occupant’s individual preference in AC use is seldom studied due to the limitation of appliance-level energy data. This study aims to analyze the inter-occupant OB diversity based on the monitoring bigdata of AC load in a residential community of 586 households in Osaka, Japan. First, household’s thermal preference was quantitatively identified from AC load profiles. Clustering analysis is then employed for labeling and classification of the target households with different thermal preference types. Results show 4 typical behavioral patterns, namely sensitive & active users, sensitive but inactive users, insensitive but active users, insensitive & inactive users, with a share of dwellings in the community of 36%, 31%, 19%, and 14%, respectively. Such household-level benchmarking could provide an informative reference for the modeling and simulation of residential AC usage.

Overcooling indoor spaces in hot-and-humid regions indicate excessive usage of air conditioner (AC). Understanding the occupants' thermal perception in AC settings helps navigate the cooling energy required. This study investigated thermal comfort in biased and non-biased environments and examined the occupants’ preferences. Four set-point temperature conditions (Original, Original ±2 °C, and MS Standard) were implemented in a semi-controlled field study done in 19 offices. 628 samples were taken from 42 occupants via thermal measurements and questionnaire surveys. The indoor air temperature in the typical AC settings (Original set-point) was 23.1 °C, denoting non-compliance to the local guideline. The results showed that occupants generally felt more comfortable when the indoor air temperature was increased. The mean comfort temperature was 24.6 °C, and the proportion of comfort votes depletes when the operative temperature reaches 26 °C. The preferred temperature was estimated at 23.9 °C, and the linear relationship with comfort temperatures revealed that occupants preferred a cooler environment despite being thermally comfortable. The findings suggest that occupants could tolerate higher AC settings well, but thermal preference may be a critical factor in estimating the comfort temperature limits.

Indoor thermal comfort immensely impacts the health and performance of occupants. Therefore, researchers and engineers have proposed numerous computational models to estimate thermal comfort (TC). Given the impetus toward energy efficiency, the current focus is on data-driven TC prediction solutions that leverage state-of-the-art machine learning (ML) algorithms. However, an occupant’s perception of indoor thermal comfort (TC) is subjective and multi-dimensional. Different aspects of TC are represented by various standard metrics/scales viz., thermal sensation (TSV), thermal comfort (TCV), and thermal preference (TPV). The current ML-based TC prediction solutions adopt the Single-task Learning approach, i.e., one prediction model per metric . Consequently, solutions often focus on only one TC metric. Moreover, when several metrics are considered, multiple ML models for a single indoor space lead to conflicting predictions, rendering real-world deployment infeasible. This work addresses these problems by leveraging Multi-task Learning for TC prediction in naturally ventilated buildings. First, a survey-and-measurement study is conducted in the composite climatic region of north India, in 14 naturally ventilated classrooms of 5 schools, involving 512 primary school students. Next, the dataset is analyzed for important environmental, physiological, and psycho-social factors that influence thermal comfort of children. Further, "DeepComfort”, a deep neural network based Multi-task Learning model is proposed. DeepComfort predicts multiple TC output metrics viz., TSV, TPV, and TCV, simultaneously through a single model. It is validated on ASHRAE-II database and the primary student dataset created in this study. It demonstrates high F1-scores, Accuracy (≈90%), and generalization capability, despite the challenges of illogical responses and data imbalance. DeepComfort is also shown to outperform 6 popular metric-specific single-task machine learning algorithms.

Thermal comfort in indoor environments has an enormous impact on the health, well-being, and performance of occupants. Given the focus on energy efficiency and Internet of Things enabled smart buildings, machine learning (ML) is being increasingly used for data-driven thermal comfort (TC) prediction. Generally, ML-based solutions are proposed for air-conditioned or HVAC ventilated buildings and the models are primarily designed for adults. On the other hand, naturally ventilated (NV) buildings are the norm in most countries. They are also ideal for energy conservation and long-term sustainability goals. However, the indoor environment of NV buildings lacks thermal regulation and varies significantly across spatial contexts. These factors make TC prediction extremely challenging. Thus, determining the impact of building environment on the performance of TC models is important. Further, the generalization capability of TC prediction models across different NV indoor spaces needs to be studied. This work addresses these problems. Data is gathered through month-long field experiments conducted in 5 naturally ventilated school buildings, involving 512 primary school students. The impact of spatial variability on student comfort is demonstrated through variation in prediction accuracy (by as much as 71%). The influence of building environment on TC prediction is also demonstrated through variation in feature importance. Further, a comparative analysis of spatial variability in model performance is done for children (our dataset) and adults (ASHRAE-II database). Finally, the generalization capability of thermal comfort models in NV classrooms is assessed and major challenges are highlighted.

Indoor thermal comfort in smart buildings has a significant impact on the health and performance of occupants. Consequently, machine learning (ML) is increasingly used to solve challenges related to indoor thermal comfort. Temporal variability of thermal comfort perception is an important problem that regulates occupant well-being and energy consumption. However, in most ML-based thermal comfort studies, temporal aspects such as the time of day, circadian rhythm, and outdoor temperature are not considered. This work addresses these problems. It investigates the impact of circadian rhythm and outdoor temperature on the prediction accuracy and classification performance of ML models. The data is gathered through month-long field experiments carried out in 14 classrooms of 5 schools, involving 512 primary school students. Four thermal comfort metrics are considered as the outputs of Deep Neural Networks and Support Vector Machine models for the dataset. The effect of temporal variability on school children's comfort is shown through a 'time of day' analysis. Temporal variability in prediction accuracy is demonstrated (up to 80%). Furthermore, we show that outdoor temperature (varying over time) positively impacts the prediction performance of thermal comfort models by up to 30%. The importance of spatio-temporal context is demonstrated by contrasting micro-level (location specific) and macro-level (6 locations across a city) performance. The most important finding of this work is that a definitive improvement in prediction accuracy is shown with an increase in the time of day and sky illuminance, for multiple thermal comfort metrics.

<p>To reproduce homogeneous flow fields above urban-like turbulent boundary layers in computational fluid dynamics (CFD), numerous CFDs with a limited numerical domain employ periodic boundary conditions in both lateral directions with artificial momentum provision to maintain airflows. Although such artificial momentum sources are clearly different from the momentum provision in wind-tunnel experiments, the effects of these numerical conditions on the airflow in the boundary layer are not well studied. In this paper, therefore, we investigate how the momentum provision differentiates the vertical Reynolds stress and turbulent kinetic energy profiles using large-eddy simulations of airflows over cubical block arrays. </p>

The aim of this study was to clarify the effects of high-rise buildings on the mean and turbulent wind speeds within the canopy layer of an urban university campus in Malaysia. We investigated the characteristics of both mean and exceeding wind speeds by deriving probability density functions of wind speed at a selected canopy height. First, mean wind speeds were compared with those predicted by several existing models as a function of building morphological parameters. Although all empirical models predicted wind speed decreases with an increase in building density, the predicted values and our experimental data did not agree. These results imply that existing prediction models exhibit limitations in specific urban morphologies. Second, the derived probability density functions approached the normal distribution when mean wind speeds increased. In addition, peak factors of wind speeds within the canopy layer approached the values determined by the normal distribution when the mean wind speed ratios were larger than 0.5. These results indicated that strong wind speeds can be predicted by the peak factor of the normal distribution regardless of the location or wind direction using the provided mean wind speed and standard deviations of the mean when wind ratios are larger than 0.5.

Short-term measurements of household electricity demand during hot weather in Kuala Lumpur
© 2017 Institute of Advanced Engineering and Science. The aim of this study was to conduct short-term measurements on household electricity demand under hot weather conditions in a residential area in Kuala Lumpur. The measurements included total and air conditioner (AC) electricity consumption of 10 households in an apartment building as well as outdoor air temperatures, which were collected from March to May 2016. Results indicated that the average AC electricity consumption contributed to a major portion of total household electricity consumption, which ranged from 19.4 to 52.3&#37; during the measurement period. Additionally, 1-minute interval time series data indicated household energy consumption more accurately than 30-or 60-minute interval.

A multi agent simulation model to deal how the Human-Environment-Society System can approach the sustainable society was established. The model expresses dynamic process where three agents, a government, enterprises and consumers play interdependently through a variety of economic activities. Every enterprise and consumer has respective value systems that are both defined by price and environmental load. Each enterprise is imposed to determine how weighty between price and environmental load when she produces goods in order to maximize her profit. While each consumer also determines how weighty between price and environmental load when he buy products in order to maximize his utility. These determination processes are described as learning systems on an individual agent based on Finite State Machine, FSM and Genetic Algorism, GA. As a whole, the model can display a various paths whether the society goes to the sustainable world or the materialism world. The built model was verified qualitatively, and numerical simulations were presented.

A probabilistic method to generate a number of individual daily life-schedules was established, which seems to be useful in a set of calculations of various energy peak loads, including not only cooling or heating requirements but also domestic hot water even electric power and natural gas demand. Authors* previous work was a particular method that was only applicable to a dataset of Working Male on Weekdays. The method this time, however, can be applied to all the dataset. That is why it is called as universal. The accuracy of the proposed method was also identified.

In order to build a brand-new concept; CFD+MAS Joint Simulation, we successfully delivered the fundamental template (or say, prototype) in which a framework of Self-driven Particle Simulation system, that is called Multi Agent Simulation (MAS), is dovetailed with a CFD (Computer Fluid Dynamics) simulation. More precisely, a MAS follows the kernel of LES, which is one of the resolvable CFD systems to chase a time-evolution of continuum physical properties such as the concentration of pollutants, virions and others. In view of applications, we paved the fundamental theories and simulation core for i) quantifying the turbulence mixing effect in an urban canopy enhanced by shear supply by moving vehicles, and ii) risk assessment in a closed built environment in which susceptible individuals and infectious (and infected) individuals co-exist who are both treated as ‘moving’ pedestrians. In conclusion, we are able to a good inception to be extended to new discipline; ‘Simulationaolgy’.
