Research 1. Relationship of Wood Anatomical Features to Permeability and Fxation of Preservatives. Impregnation and Fixation of preservatives are closely related to wood anatomical features. In this study, flow paths using CLSM and micro-distribution of preservatives using SEM-EDXA are visuallized and relationship among permeability, fixation and wood anatomy are studied. 2. Black heartwood formation of Cryptomeria japonica. Variation of heartwood color in Cryptomeria japonica is large and black color restricts use of heartwood for decorative purposes. Because of high geen moisture content, drying and transport costs are high. In this study, distribution of potassium that related to blakening in heartwood is clarified and mechanism of black heartwood formation is studied. 3. Evaluation of Wood Quality and Cultivation of Fast Growing Trees for Sustainable Wood Utilization" Cultivation of fast growing trees with high ability of carbon stock and evaluation of wood quality is important for creation of sustainable resources. We are studying about Melia azedarach. Variation of wood properties is clarified and possibilities of use and tree breeding for wood quaility are studied. 4. Shrinkage and Anisotropy of Tracheid Cells with Desorption using CLSM or LV-SEM. As for checking during drying, visualization of shrinkage of wood cells with time is important for high quality dried wood. In this study, 4-dimensional changes of wood cell with desorption are visualized and shrinkage and anisotropy are studied. 5. Formation and Properties of Root Wood. Cambial activity of root, root wood formation and propterties are unknown. In this study, seasonal change of root cambium, elongation from fusiform initial to wood fiber and microfibril angle are studied in relation to cambial age and environmental factor.

    The space-time structure of a teak wood specific gravity (SG) dataset was analyzed using a mixed-effects model. Spatial correlation increased in space, a phenomenon attributable to the maturation of apical meristems, while the temporal correlation of vascular meristems decreased over time. The decay of temporal correlation over time was attributed to the diminishing crown effect on the later formed wood further away from the pith, morphogen gradient, and probably changing microenvironmental conditions. The Kronecker product was used to collect spatiotemporal data on the intricate dynamic process of the evolution of the apical and lateral meristems. The results showed that height and relative radial distance (RRD) (i.e., the flow of time with wood formation) were statistically significant factors, with their interaction showing no significance. The results confirm the usefulness of using the space-time approach to elucidate the interaction between the apical and lateral meristems, two major inherent biological systems that control tree growth and wood formation dynamics. To understand the origins of patterns that vary both temporally and spatially in the tree, future work should describe the variation of SG within the tree due to increasing height (space) and diameter (age) as a matrix; then the correlation function can be modelled.

    This study evaluated the lightweight impact sound of CLT (Cross Laminated Timber) made of plywood and square timber produced from domestic small–diameter larch wood. According to KS F 2810–1, the light–weight impact sound blocking performance of the CLT was evaluated by excitation with a tapping machine on the second floor and sound collection with a microphone from the lower floor. As a result, the light impact sound was 85 dB. The light impact sound blocking performance was poor, and additional studies are needed to improve the lightweight impact sound of CLT.

    To test whether radial variation of wood specific gravity (WSG) is controlled by tree age or tree size in teak (Tectona grandis L.f) plantation trees, opposing different-length pith-to-bark strips which represents the differential lateral growth rate was compared using mixed-effects model which considers the heterogeneity of variances and dependency in the data to gain insight into the stochastic processes that govern the wood formation process. Various models were tested in devising an appropriate radial WSG model. Models that accounted for serial correlation in WSG data performed better than the simple structure that assumes zero correlation between measurements. The autoregressive plus random tree effect structure performed better in describing the radial variation pattern. The variability of the data related to random fluctuations during tree development and the wood formation process is modeled by the autoregressive parameter revealing the intrinsic complexity of wood formation. Since they cannot be attributed to observed factors, models should consider temporal or serial correlations when assessing wood quality. The results revealed that tree age is a decisive factor in controlling the WSG of wood, while tree size is statistically less important. Furthermore, the core wood production period varies with the growth rate. It is shown that the core wood area decreased with slow growth. Findings presented here appear to provide the first demonstration of radial variation in WSG with respect to growth rate and age for planted teak growing in Ghana.

    <p>To examine the impact of bud pruning in the correction of stem crookedness of <i>Melia azedarach</i>, three clones (types 1, 18, and M) were planted at a rate of 1,100 trees/ha in young <i>M</i>. <i>azedarach</i> stand and bud pruning was performed up to a height of 4.5 m above ground. Subsequently, in two years, the number of treatments, aboveground height, stem crookedness per 4 m length (maximum camber), and diameter growth were compared to those of a control non-pruned plot. A reduction of diameter growth was observed in the test plot as compared to the control plot, but there was no difference between clones within the same treated plot. Compared to other clones, the M type not only had a small total number of sprouts but also had less growth on its elongated stems (2.5 to 4.5 m above the ground) in the 2nd year. Hence, it was considered to be a clone that could reduce the cost of bud pruning. The maximum camber in the test plot ranged between 2.22-2.56 cm, which was significantly less than that of the control plot (11.20-15.33 cm). The maximum camber between clones was significant in the control plot but not in the test plot. Thus, bud pruning could correct stem curvature regardless of clones. The findings from this study suggest that bud pruning of <i>M</i>. <i>azedarach</i> may contribute to the consistent production of straight stem.</p>

    <p>This study aimed to clarify the effects of differences in the wood subflooring and finishing on the physiology and psychology of walking barefoot. We measured surface electromyography (EMG) at six lower limb locations during walking on four different model floors, combining two types of flooring base materials with different stiffness and two types of floor finishes with different surface properties. We then conducted a psychological evaluation of the walking feelings. The 24-mm thick high-stiffness plywood subflooring had a significantly lower integrated EMG for the biceps femoris muscle while walking than the low-stiffness joist and 15-mm thick plywood subflooring, indicating less stress on the feet. Surface consolidated Japanese cedar, sugi (<i>Cryptomeria japonica</i>) wood finishing with the rough surface tended to have a lower surface integrated EMG during walking than ceramic-coated Japanese cypress, hinoki (<i>Chamaecyparis obtusa</i>) wood finishing with a smooth surface. Smooth finishing materials were rated as easier to walk on in the impression evaluation, which was contrasted with the surface EMG results. EMG is considered to be better suited for predicting the accumulation of fatigue due to prolonged walking, which is difficult to recognize after a short period of walking.</p>

    Heartwood color is a complex trait that affects the economic and aesthetic value of the wood but is highly variable. How the color of the heartwood varies spatially and temporally is poorly understood. To illustrate how heartwood color varies within a tree, two opposite aspects of wood within the same tree, representing differential growth rate, were used to model the long-short axis system jointly. The color of the heartwood on the long and the short axis was considered to be two different traits. By jointly modeling the long and short axes, the correlation was examined between aspect (spatial) and contemporaneous correlations (within aspect). Spatial and temporal correlations and their interactions describe the indirect physiological, genetic, and environmental changes in wood formation with time and position in the trunk. Spatial correlations were consistently lower than temporal correlations but were positive and significant. Between the heartwood color parameters, b* showed a relatively higher spatial correlation. The results suggest that there is a spatial correlation in the long-short axis for all color parameters and in the two surfaces. Variations between aspects were not statistically significant for any color parameter. The bivariate mixed model method revealed hidden physics behind heartwood color formation. Models need to be developed to account for both spatial and temporal dependence in studies of wood property change.

    <p>To obtain straight, tall (>4 m) stems of<i> Melia azedarach</i> Linn. for timber production, bud pruning is performed. To estimate the effect of bud pruning on biomass distribution, we applied the stratified clip method to the aboveground parts of a 16-year-old <i>M. azedarach</i> stand and determined the allometric relationships among stems, branches, and leaves. Trees with relatively long straight stems and high clear lengths had smaller diameter at breast height (DBH) values. However, in even lower clear-length trees, the secondary branches died, such that leaves were distributed mainly in the upper layer of the crown. This effect may be a factor in the stem diameter growth suppression observed after the 10<sup>th</sup> year. For <i>M. azedarach</i>, however, we used the standing-tree volume table for type-1 hardwoods in Western Japan, which includes the curved part of the stem. Therefore, we derived one allometric equation to estimate the total volume of straight stems and another to estimate the volume of knot-free stems with pruned buds at 0.2-4.2 m in height, which are useful for efficient timber production. These allometric equations will allow practical calculations of stem volume in bud-pruned <i>M. azedarach</i> for forestry applications.</p>
