Abstract. The degradation of ground vegetation cover caused by large grazing herbivores frequently results in enhanced erosion rates in forest ecosystems. Splash erosion can be caused by drop impacts with a high throughfall kinetic energy (TKE) from the tree canopy. Notably larger canopy drips from structurally mediated woody surface points appear to induce even higher TKE and generate concentrated impact locations causing severe focus points of soil erosion. However, TKE at these locations has rarely been reported. This pilot study investigated the intensity of TKE at a concentrated impact location and compared it with general TKE locations under the canopy and freefall kinetic energy (FKE) outside the forest. We measured precipitation, TKE and FKE using splash cups at seven locations under Japanese beech trees and five locations outside the forest during the leafless and leafed seasons in 2021 in a mixed forest with evergreen coniferous trees and deciduous broadleaved trees in Japan. The TKE at the concentrated impact location was 15.2 and 49.7 times higher than that at the general locations under the beech and FKE, respectively. This study confirmed that canopy drip from woody surfaces could be a hotspot of soil erosion in temperate forest ecosystems. Throughfall precipitation at the concentrated impact location was 11.4 and 8.1 times higher than that at general locations and freefall, respectively. TKE per 1 mm precipitation (here, “unit TKE”) at the concentrated impact location (39.2 ± 23.7 J m−2 mm−1) was much higher than that at general locations (22.0 ± 12.7 J m−2 mm−1) and unit FKE (4.5 ± 3.5 J m−2 mm−1). Unit TKE in the leafless season was significantly lower than in the leafed season because of fewer redistribution of canopy drips induced only by woody tissue. Nevertheless, unit TKE at the concentrated impact location in the leafless season (36.4 J m−2 mm−1) was still higher than at general locations in the leafed season. These results show that potentially high rates of sediment detachment can be induced not only by throughfall precipitation but also by larger throughfall drop size distributions at the concentrated impact location, even in the leafless season. Further studies with more replication building on this first report are necessary to investigate how many of these concentrated impact locations may occur on average with different tree species to better assess the extent of the erosion risk under forests.

Carbon dioxide and water vapor exchanges between tropical forest canopies and the atmosphere through photosynthesis, respiration, and evapotranspiration (ET) influence carbon and water cycling at the regional and global scales. Their inter- and intra-annual variations are sensitive to seasonal rhythms and longer-timescale tropical climatic events. In the present study, we assessed the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) influence on ET and on the net ecosystem exchange (NEE), using eddy-covariance flux observations in a Bornean rainforest over a 10-y period (2010–2019) that included several El Niño and La Niña events. From flux model inversions, we inferred ecophysiological properties, notably the canopy stomatal conductance and “big-leaf” maximum carboxylation rate ( Vcmax25_BL ). Mean ET values were similar between ENSO phases (El Niño, La Niña, and neutral conditions). Conversely, the mean net ecosystem productivity was highest during La Niña events and lowest during El Niño events. Combining Shapley additive explanation calculations for nine controlling factors with a machine-learning algorithm, we determined that the primary factors for ET and NEE in the La Niña and neutral phases were incoming shortwave solar radiation and Vcmax25_BL , respectively, but that canopy stomatal conductance was the most significant factor for both ET and NEE in the El Niño phase. A combined stomatal-photosynthesis model approach further indicated that Vcmax25_BL differences between ENSO phases were the most significant controlling factor for canopy photosynthesis, emphasizing the strong need to account for ENSO-induced ecophysiological factor variations in model projections of the long-term carbon balance in Southeast Asian tropical rainforests.

Characteristics of isoprene emission from moso bamboo leaves in a forest in central Taiwan
© 2019 Elsevier Ltd The expansion of moso bamboo (Phyllostachys edulis) may potentially impact regional isoprene emissions. Modeling based on field measurements is an effective approach for assessing the potential impact of the moso bamboo expansion. The G93 algorithm is one of the most widely used models, however no studies have tested the applicability of the algorithm for moso bamboo isoprene emission. This study was undertaken to establish a model for reproducing moso bamboo isoprene emission fluxes. To this aim, this study examined 1) the isoprene emission ability of moso bamboo, and 2) its responses to environmental factors such as leaf temperature and light. We also tested 3) the reproducibility of the G93 algorithm for moso bamboo isoprene emission fluxes. This study used a chamber method with a modified photosynthesis system and carbon absorbents to quantify isoprene emitted from bamboo leaves in central Taiwan under the humid subtropical climate. First, we screened isoprene emission from 12 bamboo species, and the results confirmed that moso bamboo exhibited significant isoprene emission potential. Second, we measured isoprene emission fluxes from moso bamboo leaves with light controls every month from summer to spring. The isoprene emission fluxes increased with photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD); under sufficient PPFD conditions, the seasonal changes in the isoprene emission fluxes were regulated by leaf temperature, and low isoprene emission fluxes were found in low leaf temperature conditions. Thirdly, overestimations were observed in the G93 algorithm with the original parameters in periods with leaf temperatures <23 °C. Using the G93 algorithm with site-specific parameters could improve the overestimation in the low-temperature period. This study suggests the necessity of parameterization in the G93 algorithm to reproduce the suppression of isoprene emission fluxes from moso bamboo leaves in the low-temperature period.

Effects of soil water decline on diurnal and seasonal variations in sap flux density for differently aged Japanese cypress (Chamaecyparis obtusa) trees
© 2018, Editura Silvica. All rights reserved. The effects of soil drought on transpiration are often neglected when predicting transpiration for forests in humid regions under the influence of the Asian monsoon. These effects have indeed been neglected for Japanese cypress, Chamaecyparis obtusa, a major plantation species in Japan and the surrounding area, probably because previous studies have reported no clear effects of soil drought on transpiration for Japanese cypress forests. However, a few studies have reported an apparent reduction in transpiration with soil drought for young Japanese cypress forests. It remains unclear whether such a reduction in transpiration is limited to young Japanese cypress forests or if it is not uncommon for mature Japanese cypress forests, which occupy a large area in Japan. To clarify this point, we conducted sap flux measurements in a year with soil drought on three differently aged Japanese cypress stands including mature (43 years old) and relatively young (23 and 26 years old) trees. In a diurnal time scale, a cross correlation analysis of sap flux density (Fd) and vapor pressure deficit (VPD) showed that the time lags between Fdand VPD were 1-3 h in dry soil conditions. These were larger than those of wet soil conditions (<1 h) for all sample trees. Fdat a given VPD in dry soil conditions was smaller than that in wet soil conditions for all sample trees; a 28%–63% reduction in the rate of change in Fdwas observed under dry soil conditions. Because our results were obtained when the non-exceedance probability of recorded monthly precipitation was 9%–18%, the results suggest the need to consider the effects of soil drought more extensively. Those effects should be considered for not only relatively young but also mature Japanese cypress when predicting diurnal and seasonal patterns of transpiration in years with soil drought, and when predicting inter-annual patterns of transpiration for Japanese cypress despite humid temperate climate.
