    森林生態系が植物と分解者の相互作用によってその機能が発揮されていることに着目し、植物ー微生物ー土壌動物の相互作用を野外操作実験や安定同位体の手法を用いてトビムシの植生を調べることで明らかにした。さらにトビムシの群集解析に形質ベースの解析法を新たに導入した。よって今後の研究の発展を期待し、日本土壌動物学会研究奨励賞を授与する。あわせて学会大会において受賞に関わる招待講演を行った。

    Rivers and streams contribute to global carbon cycling by decomposing immense quantities of terrestrial plant matter. However, decomposition rates are highly variable and large-scale patterns and drivers of this process remain poorly understood. Using a cellulose-based assay to reflect the primary constituent of plant detritus, we generated a predictive model (81% variance explained) for cellulose decomposition rates across 514 globally distributed streams. A large number of variables were important for predicting decomposition, highlighting the complexity of this process at the global scale. Predicted cellulose decomposition rates, when combined with genus-level litter quality attributes, explain published leaf litter decomposition rates with high accuracy (70% variance explained). Our global map provides estimates of rates across vast understudied areas of Earth and reveals rapid decomposition across continental-scale areas dominated by human activities.

    Kyushu is the western and southern limits of beech (Fagus crenata) distribution in Japan, where Pacific-type beech forests are found in the mountains. Recently, overgrazing by deer has caused a decline in the forest understory, particularly the dwarf bamboo (Sasa spp.), causing concerns about forest degradation of the environment and ecosystems in Kyushu. However, few vegetation surveys of beech forests in Kyushu have been conducted since the early 2000s, when deer grazing became a prominent issue. This study aims to understand the present condition of beech forests in Kyushu by conducting vegetation surveys at 7 sites, and visually recording vegetation at 5 sites. We established five plots, each with a radius of 5 meters and centered around a selected beech tree, on each site, and measured basal area, the proportion of beech in basal area, tree density, sasa height, and sasa stem density within each plot. We found that sasa has disappeared from understory vegetation in some sites (Mt. Furusobo-san, Mt. Mukouzaka-yama, and Mt. Sanpou-dake) and that there is a large variation in sasa stem density in sites where sasa remained, indicating that the impact of deer grazing in beech forests was highly site-specific. Vegetation surveys including forest understory are important for monitoring the rapid changes occurring in forest environments in recent years.

    Abstract

    Springtails (Collembola) inhabit soils from the Arctic to the Antarctic and comprise an estimated ~32% of all terrestrial arthropods on Earth. Here, we present a global, spatially-explicit database on springtail communities that includes 249,912 occurrences from 44,999 samples and 2,990 sites. These data are mainly raw sample-level records at the species level collected predominantly from private archives of the authors that were quality-controlled and taxonomically-standardised. Despite covering all continents, most of the sample-level data come from the European continent (82.5% of all samples) and represent four habitats: woodlands (57.4%), grasslands (14.0%), agrosystems (13.7%) and scrublands (9.0%). We included sampling by soil layers, and across seasons and years, representing temporal and spatial within-site variation in springtail communities. We also provided data use and sharing guidelines and R code to facilitate the use of the database by other researchers. This data paper describes a static version of the database at the publication date, but the database will be further expanded to include underrepresented regions and linked with trait data.

    The number of Sika deer was recorded in Ashoro Research Forest, Kasuya Research Forest and Shiiba Research Forest in the Kyushu University Forests. Ashoro Research Forest has a cool temperate deciduous forest, Kasuya Research Forest has a warm temperate evergreen forest and Shiiba Research Forest has a warm temperate deciduous forest. The spotlight census was conducted for five years from 2017 to 2022 at three locations in the Kyushu University Forests. In the three forests of the Kyushu University Forests, the census courses of the 4 km and the 3.5 km were used in Ashoro Research Forest, 1.7 km and 0.5 km in Kasuya Research Forest, and 6.1 km and 2.8 km in Shiiba Research Forest.

    Aculeata bees and wasps(Chrysidoidea, Vespoidea, and Apoidea)play important roles in ecosystem functions such as pollination, food web control, and natural enemy control. Information on their distribution is needed to understand the changes in Aculeata fauna, especially due to climatic and environmental changes. The Aculeata fauna of Kyushu is poorly surveyed, and recorded taxa are biased even in Kagoshima Prefecture, where surveys have been relatively conducted well. In this study, we provided the occurrence data of Aculeata in the Takakuma Experimental Forest, Kagoshima University, and the Osumi National Forest. We collected Aculeata in different seasons using yellow pan traps and identified a total of 494 individuals belonging to 67 species, 5 of which were recorded from Kyushu for the first time. Species that appear to be unique to lowland broad-leaved forests were obtained(e. g. Epyris shohki).Surveys at these lowland forests could contribute to a better understanding of the Aculeata fauna of Kyushu.

    Moso bamboo (Phyllostachys edulis) is currently distributed across a wide geographical area in East Asia. As a common bamboo species occurring along a broad environmental gradient, there is a need to understand how environmental and biotic drivers affect belowground processes at large scales. In this study, we investigated the influence of climate, soil properties, stand characteristics, and organic matter input parameters as potential drivers of the initial decomposition process in Moso bamboo stands at a regional scale. Using the Tea Bag Index method, we estimated the initial decomposition rate (k) and stabilization factor (S; potential long-term carbon storage) from standard litter incubated at 13 sites across southern Japan and Taiwan. We found that both decomposition parameters were strongly affected by the climate. The climatic conditions during the incubation period better explained the variance in k. In contrast, the long-term climate was more important for S. Notably, temperature and precipitation interactively affected the initial decomposition rates. This interaction showed that in warmer sites, precipitation increased k, whereas in cooler sites, precipitation had no effect or even decreased k. Soil parameters had no influence on k and only had minor effects on S. A structural equation model showed that the stabilization factor was indirectly affected by stand density, which suggests that higher bamboo densities could increase litter stabilization by increasing above-and below-ground organic matter input. Our study highlights the central role of climate in controlling decomposition processes in Moso bamboo stands on a broad scale. Moreover, differences in stand structure can indirectly affect potential soil carbon storage through changes in organic matter input and soil conditions.

    Aculeata bees and wasps play important roles in ecosystems such as pollination and food web control. However, it is not possible to evaluate temporal community changes based on past occurrence data, because distribution records of aculeate wasps and bees in the East Hokkaido region have been poor. In this study, we recorded the species and their occurrence data in the Ashoro Research Forest, Kyushu Univ. and Biribetsu National Forest, Hokkaido, which cover a wide elevational range. We collected Aculeata using yellow pan traps in different seasons and identified a total of 246 individuals belonging to 62 species, five of which were recorded from Hokkaido for the first time. Although the main species collected by yellow pan traps were recorded, to elucidate the entire Aculeata fauna, it is necessary to conduct surveys in different environments, such as forest edges and grasslands, and using collection methods other than pan traps.

    To compare the performance of synthetic fiber nets and electric fences as wildlife prevention fences, we planted seedlings of Pieris japonica, Chamaecyparis obtusa and Quercus crispula in the 5 cm mesh net, 10 cm mesh net, electric fences, and control plots. Seedlings height and survival rate were recorded from 2015 to 2020. We also recorded the flora of these experimental plots in 2016 and 2021 to compare the changes of forest floor vegetation in the plots. Pieris japonica grew well in the control plot and most of the individuals survived. Tree height of Chamaecyparis obtusa was highest in the electric fence, and the survival rate was over 90 % in the 5 cm mesh net. The average height of Quercus crispula was only 87 cm and the survival rate were only 33 % due to shade by herbaceous plants. A total of 52 herbaceous species and tree seedlings in the forest floor were observed in 2016, and this number increased to 81 in 2021. In addition, seedlings of Pinus densiflora, Quercus crispula, Hydrangea paniculata and other pioneer species became established, suggesting that enclosing the floor of forest gap with fences may lead to the regional compensatory vegetation.

    Exudation by fine roots generally varies with their morphological traits, but the effect of belowground resource availability on the root exudation via root morphological traits and biomass remains unknown. We aimed to determine the effects of morphological and physiological traits on root exudation rates and to estimate stand-scale exudation (Estand) by measuring the mass, length, and surface area of fine roots in a Moso bamboo forest. We measured root exudation as well as morphological and physiological traits in upper and lower plots on a slope with different belowground resource availability. The mean (± S.D.) root exudation rates per mass in the upper and lower slope were 0.049 ± 0.047 and 0.040 ± 0.059 mg C g-1 h-1, respectively, which were in the range of exudation found in woody forest ecosystems. We observed significant relationships between root exudation per mass and root respiration, as well as specific root length and surface area. In contrast, exudation per length and area did not correlate with morphological traits. The morphological traits did not differ between slope positions, resulting in no significant difference in root exudation per mass. Fine root biomass, length, and surface area on a unit ground basis were much higher in the lower than those in the upper slope positions. Estand was higher when estimated by mass than by length and area because the morphological effect on exudation was ignored when scaled using mass. Estand was 1.4-2.0-fold higher in the lower than that in upper slope positions, suggesting that the scaling parameters of mass, length, and area determined the Estand estimate more than the exudation rate per mass, length, and area. Regardless of scaling, Estand was much higher in the Moso bamboo forest than in other forest ecosystems because of a large fine-root biomass.

    The relative importance of topography and vegetation in shaping local soil invertebrate communities is poorly understood. We investigated changes in the species and trait compositions of Collembola communities associated with different topography and forest types. Our study sites encompassed various topographies with different slope aspects and forest types; specifically, natural deciduous broad-leaved forests and deciduous coniferous plantations in Japan. The body length and edaphic adaptation score, which are representative of a certain life-form, were used as Collembola traits. Across a topographic gradient from south to north-facing slopes, the total biomass of Collembola was higher in dry plots than in humid plots, and the forest types did not affect either abundance, biomass, or species diversity. Variation partitioning analysis revealed that topography played an important role in determining species composition and functional traits, whereas forest types and spatial distance had minor roles. The responses of community weighted mean traits (CWMs) to environmental change were more pronounced than those of species composition. The CWM and functional diversity of body length were higher in the dry plots than in the humid plots. These changes in traits might be explained by food supply or habitat structure increasing large individuals via topography, rather than by physical stress filtering out intolerant small individuals. These results suggest that slope topography is an important determinant of the Collembola community structure in cool-temperate forest ecosystems.

    福岡演習林の天然生林のなかで特徴的な林分を保護し,その林分構造を把握することを目的として,つる性木本植物(1林班),モミ・コバノミツバツツジ(4林班),ネズミサシ(8林班),リュウキュウマメガキ(15林班),シイ・カシ類(16林班)の5つの学術参考保護林を定め,20m×20mの方形プロットを設定した。つる性木本植物プロットでは19種が認められ,胸高断面積合計が大きい樹種は順にアラカシ,ヤブツバキ,ヒサカキであった。つる性木本植物ではサカキカズラ,ヤマフジ,ヤマイバラであった。モミ・コバノミツバツツジプロットでは14種が認められ,胸高断面積合計が大きい樹種は順にモミ,タブノキ,コナラであった。ネズミサシプロットでは10種が認められ,胸高断面積合計が大きい樹種は順にアカマツ,ネズミサシ,コナラであった。リュウキュウマメガキプロットでは17種が認められ,胸高断面積合計が大きい樹種は順にアラカシ,シロダモ,コナラであった。シイ・カシ類プロットでは16種が認められ,胸高断面積合計が大きい樹種は順にツブラジイ,ウラジロガシ,コナラであった。

    気候変動やそれに伴う植生変化により土壌の生物群集が大きく改変されつつある現在、実測が困難な土壌生物多様性を、植生と関連づけることによって推定可能にすることは緊急の課題である。申請者らは、「植物から供給されるリター(枯死体)資源が土壌生物の食物のみならずハビタット(住み場所)を創出している」という点に着目し、リターの養分元素組成のみならず物理的な構造から土壌動物の多様性を説明することを試みる。本研究では、リターの多角的な“質”や“質の変化”を定量評価することが可能な「形質アプローチ」を用いて、植生から土壌動物多様性を推定するための新たなリター評価手法(ひいては土壌有機物層評価手法)を開発する。

    産業革命以降,増加し続けてきた大気由来の窒素沈着は,近年,世界的に減少に転じていることが指摘され始めている.しかし,これまでの窒素沈着による負のレガシーエフェクト(リン,カルシウムなどの窒素以外の栄養資源の減少)が大きいと仮に窒素沈着量が減少しても森林の生態系機能が回復しない可能性がある.本研究は,申請者らによる過去の観測データや既設試験地を活用することで,窒素負荷による負のレガシーエフェクトを解析し(林分スケールでの検証),森林流域からの窒素流出を地域,全国スケールで解析する(地域,全国スケールでの検証).
