    This study aimed to clarify the vegetation history of planted forests that are still in use today by comparing the types of land afforested in 1960 with the post-war afforestation period in Japan’s Hokkaido, Kyushu, and Kinki regions. It was during that time that the majority of the planted forest in these regions was established. We calculated the afforestation ratios (afforested area of each type of land/total afforested area) for the smallest survey unit, the 1950 administrative sections, using data from the 1960 World Agriculture and Forestry Census on the afforested areas of various types of land (i.e., deforested areas resulting from natural forests, deforested areas resulting from planted forests, and areas other than forests). The afforestation ratios were then sorted into ten categories for each municipality in the three regions and mapped using GIS. The analysis results showed that the vegetation history in Kyushu, even within the same municipality, was frequently mixed in 1960; in Hokkaido, the afforestation ratio for deforested areas resulting from natural forests was extremely high, while the afforestation ratio for deforested areas resulting from planted forests was low. In contrast, the Kinki region has a low afforestation ratio for non-forest regions. This study provides useful information for ecosystem management.

    This article contains the results of research with a purpose to determine the farmer s entrepreneurial character, the profits, and analyze the entrepreneurial character that influencing the profits of shallot farming in coastal lands, Panjatan District, Kulon Progo. The sampling technique used is simple random sampling. This research was conducted using descriptive quantitative analysis. Determination of respondents by simple random sampling as many as 40 farmers among 76 farmers who planted shallots on coastal land during the study. The entrepreneurial character analysis uses an assessment based on the Likert scale, while analyzing the entrepreneurial character that affects the profits of shallot farming using multiple linear regression. The result of research shows that the entrepreneurial character score is 3.17. Internal factors show the score obtained is 3.14. External factors score is 3.54. The shallot farming analysis shows that the total costs are IDR 5,290,619 per 1,000 m2, Revenue IDR 7,312,625 per 1,000 m2. Income IDR 1,529,897 per 1,000 m2, and Profit IDR 2,022,006 per 1,000 m2. Multiple linear regression analysis shows that entrepreneurial character factors that have a significant effect on profit are facing change. The conclusion obtained is that entrepreneurial character analysis has a strong category.

    In Japan, small-scale forestry, known as 'self-logging (Zibatsu)', has attracted the attention of young people in recent years. In 2014 the Association for the Promotion of Self-logging type Forestry (Zibatsu-gata) was established as a non-profit organization (NPO). The NPO promotes small-scale forestry by providing training in chainsaw thinning and disaster-resistant spur roads, as well as management advice. However, it is unclear which demographic groups participate in the NPO's activities and what their expectations are of the small-scale forestry. Therefore, a questionnaire by google forms was conducted with 1,040 registered the direct mailing list of the NPOs to examine the attributes of the members and their expectations on Zibatsu forestry. The number of valid responses was 184 (17.7%). More than half of the respondents were under 50 years of age. Respondents could be divided into three categories: those who planned to engage in self-logging forestry (Candidates: 57%), those already working in self-logging forestry (Practitioners: 30%) and those who were supporters of the NPO activities (Supporters: 13%). The prospective workers were seeking to acquire skills in self-logging forestry and were particularly interested in learning spur roads for disaster resilient forestry. In particular, a high percentage of the candidates did not own forest land, indicating the importance of matching aging forest owners with candidates. It was also clear that few of the practitioners and candidates planned to make a living solely from income from Zibatsu, and many planned to combine it with other self-employment businesses.

    Frequent torrential rainfall disasters have occurred worldwide in recent years. In Japan, the Northern Kyushu Torrential Rainfall disaster in July 2017 caused extensive damage to Fukuoka and Oita prefectures and significantly impacted local landscapes, from which residents derive pride and identity and, hence, are of the utmost importance. Local communities in Japan are also at risk of extinction due to progressive depopulation. This study discusses community revitalization through landscape creation and related challenges based on the case of the Hiraenoki Community affected by the Northern Kyushu Torrential Rainfall disaster. We conducted long-term participant observations over two years and semi-structured interviews with all households in the community. We found that the landscape project revitalized local pride and involved numerous people outside the community, including the prefectural extension center, university, and Non-Profit Organization (NPO), and provided them with an opportunity to connect. On the other hand, our investigation also revealed the danger of obscuring the original purpose of reconstruction activities because of collaboration with outsiders. This case study elucidates the possibilities and challenges of resident-led reconstruction activities in communities that are facing depopulation and aging problems and are working with organizations within and outside the community.

    Changes in political orders, institutional rearrangements, global geopolitics, and environmental discourses shape public policy. After the 1990s, Myanmar has shifted from a centralized state (socialism) to a more decentralized state (neoliberalism). This study investigates the influence of neoliberalism on Myanmar's political economy and forest policy after the1990s. To this end, we employ a political ecology approach integrating with Marxist's political economy theory. We divide transitional periods into the military period (1988–2010) and the democratic transition period (2011−2020) and discuss how political economy change generated by “neoliberalization” in Myanmar has affected the forest sector. Myanmar has focused on developing local timber markets, dominated by privately-owned sawmills and timber processing factories after the 1990s. During both periods, the country has made progress in promoting marketization, the role of the private sector, and deregulation and voluntarism, in contrast with the internal timber industry under the so-called “Burmese Way of Socialism.” A state-private hybrid forest policy has emerged from the integration of neoliberal market principles with the state's stronghold timber extraction based on the 19th-century German forest principles of the Myanmar Selection System (MSS). This phenomenon implies the necessity to review the MSS combined with the 1995 forest policy.

    This paper reports that the recovery support through collaboration using landscaping design in the Hiraenoki village of Shiwa, Asakura City, Fukuoka Prefecture, which was damaged in the July 2017 torrential rainstorm in northern Kyushu, with a particular focus on the process of landscaping a flower tree garden called “Kunugiyama Miharashi-dai”. The residents established a restoration committee to ensure the village’s continuity and envisioned the development of restoration activities through landscape design. The committee requested support from Kyushu University and jointly planned activities, secured funding, formulated a planting plan, and implemented the activities. This paper reports on the design process as a case study.

    Agroforestry has long been considered one of the most important land-use practices for conserving species while also meeting the fundamental requirements of millions of poor people in developing countries. Thus, the objective of the study was to determine the impacts of agroforestry practices on the livelihood development of rural farmers and biodiversity conservation potency in the Madhupur tract, Bangladesh. The study was conducted in the Madhupur tract, a famous agroforestry region in Bangladesh, using a mix-method approach to data collection, such as face-to-face interviews of 100 agroforestry farmers for livelihood analysis and using sampling techniques across 50 quadrats (20 m × 20 m) for measuring biodiversity. The results showed that the agroforestry practices significantly increased farm income and provided more benefits to rural farmers. Agroforestry farmers were able to build a social platform while simultaneously increasing their capability through training programs. As a result, the development of agroforestry farmers’ livelihood capital was significant. At the same time, the agroforestry practices introduced 34 plant species into the bare forestland and, therefore, provided higher-quality habitats for biodiversity conservation. The fast-growing tree species, mainly Acacia (diversity index of 0.366), in association with partial shade-loving crops such as pineapple, turmeric, and ginger, were the most dominant species in the agroforestry practices of the Madhupur tract. The study also revealed that agroforestry serves as a wildlife corridor and attracts birds for feeding and breeding. Finally, the agroforestry of the Madhupur tract is a viable land-use practice for biodiversity conservation and livelihood development of rural farmers in Bangladesh, and it is highly suggested that it be strengthened and disseminated.

    SDGsはあらゆる種類の森林の持続可能な森林経営の促進を掲げている。統一的な定義を用いたFAOの世界森林資源評価の一方、各国の「森林」の定義は多様である。社会経済システムが原初的空間を形式的に取り込む中で生じた矛盾を実質的に包摂する過程で、不均等で異質性をはらむ「領域」が空間編成される。本研究は歴史や社会経済体制、森林の所有形態が異なる熱帯アジアと日本の事例の比較を通じて、各国で「森林」がどのように再構築され、それらの空間の領域的再編を促す社会・経済的要因は何かという学術的な問いに答え、生態的に指定された森林と行政的に指定された森林を区別するポリティカル・フォレストの概念の系統化に貢献する。

    本研究の目的は、科学が社会に受容されるトランスディシプリナリー(TD)研究の方法論と評価指標を構築することである。複雑かつ複合的な社会問題解決のために、「学際」の枠を超えて研究者が社会のステークホルダーと協働し、研究を計画、実施、普及していくTDアプローチが近年求められている。国内外の地域で5年以上にわたって信頼関係を継続している協働パートナーと、オンラインと現地対面によるハイブリットインタビューやアンケート調査、また先行文献レビューを実施し、データを収集する。実証的データと理論的データから各フィールドでのTD研究の方法と評価指標を反復的に比較・検討することにより、一般化・理論化を図る。

    本研究は平成29年7月九州北部豪雨を事例に土砂・流木災害の要因と影響を分析し、森林ゾーニング手法と復興課題を検証した。その結果、20年生以下の林分を起点として山腹崩壊した割合が高く、当地に多いスギ人工林を中心に流木化し、途中で流木が停止しうる地形が乏しかったことが流木流出量を増大させたことを指摘した。また、災害発生から5年間、被害箇所の植生と渓流環境の変化を定点観測し、花崗岩地質で回復が遅れるなど地質によって回復程度が異なること、完全な回復には更に年月を要することを指摘した。社会的には、災害を契機に集落の過疎化の進展がみられるが、景観や文化の再生や創出が災害復興過程に重要であることを示した。

    Forest plantations, which have greater production potential per unit area than natural forests, are becoming increasingly important as a means of meeting the growing demand for tropical timber while protecting natural forests. This study examined the conditions for sustainable tropical forest plantations in Indonesia by comparing cases of forest plantations (community forest plantations, industrial forest plantations, and private forests) of different sizes, tenure types, and geographical conditions. All forest plantations have their advantages and disadvantages. The study suggested that a combination of these characteristics, depending on local characteristics, is important for developing sustainable tropical forest plantations in the country.
